heads-up.Just ONCE--I'd like to have a film about Churchill that tells the

[ChurchillChat] Re: USA TV Broadcast of Churchill's Secret

2016-09-14 Thread PatFinn1940
What did you all think of how Ms. Duncan played the role of Clementine
Churchill?

She seemed overly emotionally controlled. Especially in the 'family
dinner table row' between her children. And the various scenes with Jock
Colville.

And what did you think of the scene where Clementine tells Millie about
little Marigold, and her sudden death? That was heartbreaking, watching
both WSC and CSC break down in tears.

I wish Marigold was buried with her parents and siblings at Bladon, instead
of being alone in Kensal Green Cemetery, London.

Anyway: I thought the production was beautifully photographed, and the
overall acting performances good. Sure would be nice if there was a
factual presentation of the same story.

My two cents. :)

Re: [ChurchillChat] Another Image of Churchill

2015-07-17 Thread PatFinn1940
I have that 'warmer' photo by Karsh on my copy of Sir Martin's one-volume
Churchill biography (it was the first book Sir Martin sent me, after we
began our correspondence in 2006). It's one of my favorite Churchill
photos. I wonder how Karsh got him to smile for it, after the 'scowling
lion' one was taken?

And you are right about 'In Search of Churchill' being a 'masterpiece'.
It helped a lot with the background of how the young Martin Gilbert became
the 'official' biographer after Randolph Churchill's death. And the
stories of how he tracked down so many of Churchill's colleagues were both
very amusing--and something of a 'spy novel'!

[ChurchillChat] Re: Sutherland portrait

How in the world did Miss Hamblin manage to keep this secret?? I am glad
there weren't any paparazzi photographers around at Chartwell, when the
painting was taken out in the dead of night. What a courageous thing for
her to do.

The Sutherland portrait was really horrific. WSC had a great comeback
line about it. But I can certainly see why Clementine *hated *the thing.

Re: [ChurchillChat] Re: Churchill's farming activities

2015-07-03 Thread PatFinn1940
I would love to read Piers Brendon's book, when it does come out!

I hope it includes the story of the phone conversation between Churchill
and Field Marshal Alanbrooke--when Churchill was laying in bed and wiggling
his toe, and his cat bit it. And Churchill yells out, *'Get off, you
bloody fool!!'--*and Alanbrooke hangs up the phone, thinking HE was the
'bloody fool'!!

Churchill loved cats mostly, did he not? I remember reading there was a
cat keeping him company in his final days at Hyde Park Gate.

[ChurchillChat] Re: Reflections on Churchill's Funeral (Weekly Standard)

2015-01-26 Thread PatFinn1940
Excellent article. The quotes from Sir Martin Gilbert were spot-on.

I was barely 10 years old, when Winston Churchill died. I remember
watching the excellent series *The Gallant Years *(with actor Richard
Burton reading Churchill's words)with my parents, so I was aware that
Churchill was someone really important. Even back then, I was interested
in how he led Britain in WW2.

And I knew he was half-American, on his mother's side. What I didn't know
*then
*was: his maternal grandfather was born about an hour south of where I
lived, in Upstate New York!

BTW: the author got the Funeral site *wrong.* It wasn't at *Westminster
Abbey. It was St Paul's Cathedral!*The singing of *The Battle Hymn of
the Republic *at the Service still gives me goosebumps.

[ChurchillChat] Re: Churchill and the 'Black Dog' of Depression

2014-11-13 Thread PatFinn1940
Dear Professor Capet:

I would definitely be interested in reading about Churchill, and his
struggles with the 'Black Dog' of depression.

I've dealt with that a lot in my own life; I even attempted suicide nearly
seven years ago. It is of some comfort to know that a great man like
Winston Churchill wrestled with depression for much of his life.

Thank you for the 'heads-up' about this book!

Sincerely yours,

I was 10 years old in 1965, when I read the news articles about Churchill's

even though the picture was a bit fuzzy on the screen. As young as I was,

[ChurchillChat] Re: Candidate Arrested for Speech in UK

2014-04-30 Thread PatFinn1940
This is absolutely RIDICULOUS. When I first read the Churchill quote in
question a few years ago, I was struck by WSC's prescience. In some ways,
he was right--especially when it comes to the more radical Islamists, who
want to impose their Sharia law over English/British Common Law.

To jail someone (even a politician) for views that some consider non-PC is
insane. Isn't that what places like Hyde Park Corner are set up for: to
give those with unpopular views a forum? Granted, this politician wasn't
there, but he should be allowed to express such views aloud.

My two US cents.

I was almost ten years old at the time, but I remember watching Sir
Winston's State Funeral on our black-and-white TV.Even at a young age,
I knew who Churchill was, and admired him so very much. It was an awesome
spectacle to see via satellite.

Mr Edlin--

I had a look at the video clip of your one-man play, and it is *excellent!

So many previous attempts at this become merely caricatures of Churchill.
But you display both the power of his words, and his sense of humor ('Mr
Churchill, you are drunk. And you, madam, are *ugly!'). *In fact, I'd
never heard his comment about France and Frenchmen before!

Well done!

[ChurchillChat] Re: 'Churchill', narrated by Sir Ian McKellen

2013-09-24 Thread PatFinn1940
Hi, Grimsdyke--

I am definitely a great admirer of Churchill; I have been for as long as I
can remember. My earliest recollection of the great man is the
documentary series 'The Valiant Years', which I watched as a child. And
I also remember watching his funeral service on TV.

Who do you think would have been a better reader of Churchill's words in
this particular documentary? I took it for granted that the person knew
what he was doing; as an American, I am not as well acquainted with
'Churchill voice-imposters' as many British Churchillians might be. I'm
just curious. (And I am opening that question up to everyone here on the
board, BTW.)

And thanks for your kind words.

[ChurchillChat] 'Churchill', narrated by Sir Ian McKellen

2013-09-03 Thread PatFinn1940
Greetings--

I'm wondering if any fellow Churchillians have seen the three-part
documentary *Churchill, *narrated by Sir Ian McKellen? It was shown on my
local PBS channel the past three Sundays. It featured interviews with
family members (Mary, Lady Soames, grandson Winston S. Churchill, and
granddaughter Celia Sandys), colleagues (Anthony Montague Browne, Evan
Davies), and descendants of colleagues (Lloyd George's great-grandson). I
noticed it was done back in 2003.

I thought it was *very *well done. The person who read Churchill's words
was marvelous. It was like the great man had come back to life!!

I must confess that I was very sad at the end, watching Churchill's
physical decline. There was wonderful clear footage of the funeral
procession from Parliament up through Whitehall. And when St Paul's
Cathedral choir was singing *The Battle Hymn of the Republic, *I 'lost
it'...and the tears really flowed during the procession on the River
Thames, as the dock cranes were lowered in tribute.

I live not far from where Churchill's American grandfather, Leonard Jerome,
was born and raised. And that's a real honor to me.

What are your thoughts on this documentary? Thanks.

[ChurchillChat] Re: Churchill & "Mad Men"

2013-04-18 Thread PatFinn1940
I've never seen an episode of 'Mad Men' myself. But these Churchill
quotes are spot-on for these various scenarios.

And I especially like the following quote:

*"An appeaser is one who feeds a crocodile, hoping it will eat him last."

*Thanks, David, for posting this article!

Churchill *should *have some presence at Bletchley Park; if it wasn't for

[ChurchillChat] Re: Winston's book about his father Randolph

Hello Professor Capet--

When I was in New York City for the 'Churchill: The Power of Words'
exhibition in June, I stopped by Chartwell Booksellers, near Fifth Avenue.
Perhaps they would have second-hand copies of WSC's biography of his father
Randolph? I'll check their Web site for prices. Did you pay a lot for
the edition you purchased?

[ChurchillChat] Re: The Arts(Movies)

2012-12-14 Thread PatFinn1940
Hi Tom--I've not seen 'Young Winston' in a long time. But Simon Ward did
an outstanding job in the title role. Couldn't believe how much he really
looked like young WSC. Was shocked to learn of his death earlier this
year.

'The Gathering Storm' is one I've never seen. I'll check Amazon US in the
coming year, and see if either of them are still available.

Thanks.

[ChurchillChat] Re: March Chartwell Bulletin

2012-03-16 Thread PatFinn1940
I really enjoyed the talk by Allen Packwood at Chartwell! I loved
how he described Churchill's audacity, and other somewhat 'impulsive'
characteristics.

A friend (and fellow Churchill admirer) remarked to me this week that
he felt those, and simliar character traits, reflected Churchill's
American side. And I think he's right! Churchill's own American
grandfather, Leonard Jerome, was a stock speculator in New York during
the Gilded Age--long before the US Securities and Exchange Commission
came into being. That risk-taking led to great wealth--but it also
led to losing at least three fortunes.

I currently live not far from Leonard Jerome's birthplace, in the
southern foothills of Onondaga County, New York. And I plan to do
more research on the subject of Churchill's American roots.

[ChurchillChat] Churchill meeting with Hitler

2011-03-05 Thread PatFinn1940
Greetings:

A friend and I were discussing history this week, and the topic came
up about whether there was the potential for Churchill meeting with
Hitler before the war started. We both know there was talk of it--
but we're racking our brains trying to remember WHEN it was
discussed. And wasn't there a famous reply from Churchill rejecting
the meeting?

This is driving both of us nuts, trying to remember the exact
context. Any help is appreciated--THANKS!

[ChurchillChat] Re: Visiting the Churchill War Rooms

2010-11-24 Thread PatFinn1940
Greetings again--

I watched the Churchill funeral DVD last night, and it is
excellent!! It is from the ITN broadcast, and has clips of the
funeral procession from Westminster Hall to St Paul's, and then to
Bladon itself.

What I found especially interesting were the highlights of the funeral
service itself. There is a bit of a scary moment, as the Irish
Guards pallbearers are carrying the coffin up the steps to St Paul's:
at the top step, there appears to be a slight shift to the left, and
the bearers are struggling a little with their heavy and priceless
burden. I kept holding my breath, praying the coffin wouldn't slip
from their grasp.

It also shows the funeral party at Waterloo Station, as the coffin is
borne aboard the train to Bladon. I don't know who the commentator
is, but he speaks sparingly, but movingly, as the train leaves London
for the last time. And the scene shifts to the Bladon churchyard, as
the local citizens wait for the funeral party to arrive. And then
there are scenes after the burial, showing some of the floral tributes
left. One was from Gamal Abdel Nasser!!!

And then the DVD closes, with the citizens of Bladon being allowed
into the graveyard, to see the floral tributes heaping over the
grave. It's dark, but the people still come to see.

IMO, I do think it is worth purchasing. And I do believe there would
be a market for Churchillians in America to buy this DVD. It'll
definitely be a cherished part of my DVD library.

commended, for all the work they did in restoring the War Rooms; I
really felt like I was part of what was going on in those rooms, in
1940 and 1941. I took a whole lot of photographs, and listened
intently to the commentaries on the mobile devices provided.

I also visited Ypres, Belgium, from 10-13 November, and saw the plaque
about Mr. Churchill's Great War service, at Ploegsteert, on the city
hall's wall (I think that's what it was). I wasn't able to get a
photo of that, however; I was on a Great War battlefields tour.

Unfortunately, I couldn't get to Blenheim Palace, or to Bladon. The
logistics of getting to Oxford and back were too much, in the time
allotted. But I am very hopeful of returning to the UK in the near
future, and putting them on my itinerary. At least I was able to buy
a US DVD copy of Mr. Churchill's funeral service in 1965, so I can
watch it on my computer.

And I also bought a copy of "The WIcked Wit of Winston Churchill",
which has provided many moments of laughter!

If anyone wants to hear more about my Cabinet War Rooms visit, please
email me. Thanks for letting me post here; I am always learning
something new and interesting about Churchill here!

Sincerely,
(Ms.) Pat Finnegan

This is FANTASTIC news for Sir Martin! He well deserves such an

I couldn't believe what I read above, about this 'PC change' in the UK
school system. How can children become interested in REAL history,
if they're not taught about it in the early years??? That's how I
became a history 'nut'--I remember first reading about the Second
World War (and Churchill) as early as the fifth grade! And I also
remember feeling very moved, while watching Churchill's funeral on TV,
even as a kid.

One has to catch the kids' attention about history as early as
possible. Is there some shame about teaching young children about
their own history? I am so sick to death of PC 'education' :(

BTW (and I hope I am not too far off-topic): I am in the process of
starting a Web site about Churchill's maternal grandfather, Leonard
Jerome. I discovered he was born in Pompey, New York (which isn't
far from where I live in Syracuse, NY). Last week I was in Palmyra,
NY, which is between Syracuse and Rochester, and found the church
where Leonard and Clara Jerome were married! I also met a local
gentleman who is a huge Churchill expert; he does presentations on
Churchill for various kinds of groups.

I also have a running correspondence going with Sir Martin Gilbert.
He's sent me his one-volume Churchill bio, plus some of his other
works (First and Second World War, "The Righteous", and "A History of
Israel").

Anyway: forgive me for this 'shameless self-promotion'. Please let
me know if I'm off-base. And thanks again for letting me join!
