Your PC might not be in the appropriate location to act as the tftp server.
For example, at an ISP, the routers are internet connected and the PCs are
on a management LAN behind a firewall. You'd have to punch a hole in that
firewall, but the routers are obviously directly connected to each other.

Hi JP,
to give you a good example (good because I had to do it last week ;)).
I had several core routers connected with high bandwidth lines
(FastEthernet
and ATM OC3), and I needed to upgrade them but I only had access to
a subsidiary office connected to the main network via an ISDN line.
So I just upload the first router of the main network (via ISDN... take
a while...), and I configured this router to be a tftp server. Then
I uploaded my IOS image in the others backbone routers from the first
one.
It's just an example, and I'm sure there is many reasons not to use a
router
as a tftp server (security, cpu consumption, ...) but the feature exists
and it's good to know it :)

Regards,

Nicolas.

Re: Per vlan Spanntree On Gigabit ether channel. [7:27933]

2001-12-02 Thread Jeff D

The best way to do this , for instance, is to have CatA be thr root bridge
for vlan2,
and CatB the root bridge for vlan3.

When you do this, CatC will use CatA trunk/channel for vlan 2 and CatB
trunk/channel for vlan3.

Remember the STP decision sequence:
1. Lowest Root BID
2. Lowest Path Cost to Root bridge
3. Lowest Sender BID
4. Lowest Port ID wrote in message

Cisco 827 ADSL Emergency Help [7:27945]

2001-12-02 Thread Shawn Xu

Hi,

Who has Cisco 827 ADSL router experience, please help. This is a real
emergency, not only today is Sunday I am still on the site to figure out
what is going on here, but also the company complains too much because they
can not remotely access.

The problem is like this:

After you reboot the 827, everything is working fine, all the interfaces are
up, but you don't know how long it will last, sometimes a few of hours,
sometimes one hour, sometimes maybe 5 to 6 hours, then no Internet. When you
show interface at this time, all the inerfaces are still up except
virtual-access1 line protocol which was down.

Any idea? and is there anything related to my configuration file (please see
the attached for the file)?

Thank you so much in advance.

Maybe this will explain it..Just because a serial int is UP/UP, it doesn't
necessarily mean that data is able to be xfered. The serial int could be
connected to a CSU/DSU which might give the int the correct control signal
states to make the serial int appear to be up (example would be that the
remote CSU/DSU is broken but carrier signal is up on local int). In this
case, since it's frame relay, the 2nd up would not occur unless LMI
keepalives were occuring. What cisco is saying is UP/UP is just the int
status. Doesn't mean that data is being xfered. The most popular way to
know that an interface is in use is to watch in/out stats (via sh int).
Clear counters is another usefull cmd.

RE: Serial Line is up and line protocol is up ANSW [7:27930]

2001-12-02 Thread Gregg Malcolm

Anil,

I'm sorry, my explaination wasn't very good. The answer can't be B since
you have no information saying data is being sent and received. The answer
A does fit since a frame relay connection is active if int status is UP/UP.

As far as the 2nd part, AFAIK not every encap uses keepalives. Frame Relay
is somewhat special in that an UP/UP status really means that data COULD be
xfer'ed. The case of the broken remote CSU/DSU does not fit this scenarios
since keepalives would not be received. The question seems geared toward
trying to trick the engineer into thinking that data is being xfered vs.
could be. Many encap use keepalives. A few are F/R, ATM, PPP and HDLC (PPP
uses an echo). Not sure if all do (probably not). Hope that helps.

Re: Crypto Map Question [7:27909]

2001-12-02 Thread Jim Gillen

Hunt

Dynamic crypto maps are used when we don't know ahead of time some of the
parameters for the SA or IKE associations to be made. This would be the case
if someone is ringing in from home and it is not a device (router, firewall)
to device(router, firewall) situation where the parameters can be set up eg
roaming users IP address. This would also be associated, I believe, with a
transport type connection.

So an outbound connection cannot be made when the dynamic parameters of the
remote site/device must be set from an inbound connection. Therefore, any
outbound traffic MUST only be received once the remote user has set up an SA
with the device.

It follows from the above that outbound traffic that needs to be encrypted on
a dynamic crypto map, where an SA has not been established must be dropped.

Sorry for the convoluted nature of the argument but the line above says it
all.

I am very confused with the following Crypto Map question:

In the MCNS book (by Cisco Press), it said that if a static crypto map entry
sees outbound IP traffic that should be protected and the crypto map
specifies the use of IKE, then a Security Assoication is negotiated with the
remote peer according to the paramenters included in the crypto map entry
( => I understand this, as that's what IKE is for)

However, the book also said that if a dynamic crypto map entry sees outbound
traffic that should be protected and NO Security Association exists, then
the packet will be dropped - why? I thought the pre-requsitite for dynamic
crypto map is to use IKE. And if IKE is used, wouldn't it be able to
negotiate a Security Association like the first scenario?

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Diffle-Hellman Exchange Question [7:27952]

2001-12-02 Thread Hunt Lee

I have a question regarding DES key:

>From the MCNS (Cisco Press) book, it states that the DES key is generated by
Diffle-Hellman. From what I understand, Diffle-Hellman only exchanges the
IPSec peers public key during the shared secret key generation process, and
each peer combines the other peer's public key (with their respective
private key) to create the shared secret key. However, the generated shared
secret key is never transmitted over the network (the insecure channel -
i.e. Internet).

However, I also read from the CCO site that RSA actually sent the DES key
across the network?

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

RE: Per vlan Spanntree On Gigabit ether channel. [7:27933]

2001-12-02 Thread Tribavan Raina

The thing is to understand the principle behind VLAN load balancing and
etherchannel. In VLAN Load balance you load balance VLANs on trunks which are
not etherchanneled and in case you do etherchannel then you dont need to do
VLAN Load balance,
In vlan load balance you give either high port priority to make it forward
Traffic for that VLAN so which means if you have 2 trunks you can have 5
vlans on 1 trunk and 5 on other trunk. The
disadvantage is that in case there is not much traffic in the first 5 vlans
and there is high traffic in other 5 vlans ,the 2nd trunk becomes congested
and the 1st trunk is slightly used.
Thus it is better to do etherchanneling in which the traffic is distributed
properly and is also recommended by cisco.

May be soembody proves me wrong..
this is all what cisco says.,

Situation: I have 3 Cat 6500's (Cat A,Cat B, Cat C) Cat A and B are the

I want to control specific Vlans on the Gigabit channels from Cat C.
Example. Gigabit channel from Cat C to Cat A.. Can I use Per val Spanning
tree and make that channel priority to a vlan which is routing though Cat
A's MSFC. I also, want to do this for the Gigabit ether channel goto up to
Cat B.

Question: Is there a way to use per vlan spanning tree on Gigabit ethernet
Channels?

Thank for all you help...

yet the books practice exams has questions reguarding IS-IS. I have looked
on the cisco web site but cant see anything about IS-IS being in the BSCN

Where are your servers receiving snmp traps?
As Nicolas mentioned, there are maybe exceptions, but that's how far I would

Private IRC Server for Cisco Certification Discussion [7:27958]

2001-12-02 Thread Geoff Zinderdine

I have been running an irc server at someone.somewhere.ca:6667 for my study
partners and me and would like to invite any of you that are interested to
come join the public channel at #cisco

Primarily there are CCIE candidates using it at this time, a few that that
have earned their # and a few who are working on CCNP. Feel free to drop by
and hang out. This channel tends to be a bit more on topic than the
similarly named efnet and DALnet channels.

Be patient if you don't get a response right away from the channel
denizens... many of us are juggling lab time, family and jobs.

Best regards and good luck to you all in your networking pursuits.

RE: Private VLAN's & VTP [7:27940]

2001-12-02 Thread Kevin Welch

If I understand private vlans properly... They are configured exactly
like normal vlans, however, the ports are either left alone
(promiscuous) or restricted. Restricted ports cannot talk to each
other, they can only talk to promiscuous ports.

Re: IS-IS BSCN [7:27955]

2001-12-02 Thread Gaz

I did BSCN a few months ago. I wasn't aware that IS-IS was on the syllabus.
Pretty sure it's not.
I think the CCIE written is the first syllabus I saw which contains it,
although I would be surprised if it doesn't appear in the Internet Solutions
specialisation.
In fact I'm pretty sure it will be in the BSCI syllabus.
I bought Cisco Press BSCN and never saw it.

Short answer - No.

Gaz

Gaz is right,
There is no IS-IS in BSCN, so dont worry, go ahaed with your exam. IS-IS is
covered in BSCI (640-900) which helps you to get CCIP.

CIT question [7:27964]

In a recent sitting for the CIT paper I found a question asking to name
the "profile" which network engineers maintain, objective being to
monitor/record a certain type of network activity over a period of time
so that it could be useful in arriving into conclusions in a problematic
situation.
Does any one could give some clue as to what this "profile"is?

Thanks

I'm not sure what exactly it is, but the first thing that comes to mind is
maybe an SNMP profile, or the level of Syslog to specify with logging to a

RE: Per vlan Spanntree On Gigabit ether channel. [7:27933]

2001-12-02 Thread Mark Odette II

EtherChannels are for aggregate bandwidth, but a pair of EtherChannels can
give you the ability to load-balance. You just have to do as you said about
load balancing before, and put priorities on the respective VLans you want
to direct in which direction of your EtherChannel setup. An example being
that you have Vlans 1-6. Set the priority high for the first 3 vlans to go
over EtherChannel A with lower priority for the other three vlans, and then
set the priority high for the last 3 vlans on EtherChannel B while setting
the priority low for the first 3 vlans. The Vlans that have low priority
will be automatically put into "standby" mode (better known as blocking
state via STP).

This configuration also lends to the factor or redundancy in your network.
If one of the EtherChannels goes down for some reason, all Vlans are still
able to function because of the fail over of vlans by priority. STP would
recognize one of the primary (high priority vlan) channels as disabled, and
immediately start allowing all vlans to traverse the other channel.

I think though, to answer the original posters' question, what he needs to
do, is either implement the configuration I've described above for
redundancy sake, or simply specify what specific vlans he wants to traverse
each channel to the respective uplink switches, while removing all other
vlans.

PVST is a feature of ISL Trunks, rather than EtherChannels. It runs by
default for each VLan you specify to be allowed on the Trunk. With PVST,
you have to specify Root Port, Root Bridge, Path Costs, and Priorities for
each Vlan. To make the trunk worth the effort, it would need to be on
Gigabit uplinks, as you can't put multiple ether-ports into a single trunk-
that's why they have EtherChannel :)

Hope this clears any confusion.
Good luck Rico.

Subject: RE: Per vlan Spanntree On Gigabit ether channel. [7:27933]

As always thank for you for your input and ideas Cisco people.

Situation: I have 3 Cat 6500's (Cat A,Cat B, Cat C) Cat A and B are the
main backbone and have a Gigabit Channel between then. Cat A and B's
MSFC's are routing and each MSFC has a priority routing for a vlan and HSRP
for fail over routing.

Cat C is in the same VTP domain as Cat A and B and Cat C is the only one

one to Cat A and the other to Cat B.

Question: Is there a way to use per vlan spanning tree on Gigabit ethernet

Thank for all you help...
