I disagree with your need to post this.
This is a Cisco study newsgroup and frankly I personally
would prefer not to see any way off-topic messages posted.

Priority Queueing?? [7:28521]

2001-12-08 Thread yhsgp

Greetings to all
I have this router (Router A) which is sitting in between the CP firewall and
my internal network. I would like to do some traffic prioritization such
that
there will be equal weightage of traffic for the following groups:

1) Group 1 users which was assigned one range of contiguous subnets;
2) Group 2 users which was assigned another range of contiguous subnets.

Can PQ achieve this objective? If yes, I am wondering whether the following
config is fine.

priority-list 1 protocol ip medium list 10; medium queue for Group 1
users
priority-list 1 protocol ip medium list 20; medium queue for Group 2
users
priority-list 1 protocol ip normal list 30 ; others assigned to
normal queue
priority-list 1 default normal

access-list 10 permit x.x.0.0 0.0.127.255; Group 1 users
access-list 20 permit x.x.128.0 0.0.127.255 ; Group 2 users
access-list 30 permit any

int vlan xx
 priority-group 1

Any suggestions/comments are most welcome.

Cheers

RE: Redistribution Question [7:28374]

2001-12-08 Thread Chuck Larrieu

As I suspected - check your router D routing table.

this one is a classic problem, and one you MUST be able to solve in advanced
studies.

the question remains - why is it that IGRP is not seeing the subnets out of
the OSPF domain? How do you correct the problem?

My previous posts contained some of the answer. Think "classfull" in terms
of IGRP behaviour.

I already had the default-metric statment on the ASBR (Router C for IGRP

2001-12-08 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]

I disagree Priscilla, a girl above 18 years should be politely addressed as
a lady, the eviable title WOMAN is reserved only for the lady that is under
a MAN. Do not hastely overlook the suffix ---MAN, when writing WOMAN. If
they are many then they would be called WOMEN still from the root word MEN.

Configuring Partial Frame-Relay [7:28530]

2001-12-08 Thread Chris Wornell

Hello,

When configuring partial frame-relay, say a 256k line, is the only command
you have to add to the interface (assuming you have the default frame-relay
stuff for a full t1):

service-module t1 timeslots 1-4 speed 64

Also, do I need to set the clock source as the line if its less than a
1.5mbps circuit? Any help or config examples would be appreciated. Thanks!

This is just as easy as if you need to decide to run BGP or static route.

1) Is money important to you? if so, take the job that offers you higher
salary.
2) Is learning/experience more is more fun for you? if so, take the job
that you will think will allow you to play with more gears.
3) Is sex more important to you? take the job that you think will allow
you to meet pretty lady customers all the time which may allow you to
'score'
4) Finally, I think you don't know what is important to you that's why
you're posting the below question. You need to know what's important to
you. This is a crucial key in life and in everything! Your below
question can tell all of us that in the future, you may be posting another
question asking: hey guys, I understand rip and ospf really well but i'm
stuck, should i run rip on this large enterprise network with 200 remote
offices or should I run ospf...

Sorry for this nasty email but I hate to see techies folks like us in the
industry asking this sort of question. It makes others think as if we
only know our technical stuff and are so clueless in life.

RE: STP and Fast Etherchannel / Giga Etherchannel [7:28526]

2001-12-08 Thread R. Benjamin Kessler

You can implement fast/gigabit EtherChannels in a STP environment. One of
the benefits to F/GEC is that it can take redundant paths between switches
and make them appear to STP as a single link (thus no blocking). Don't
believe the hype entirely about the performance benefits. Because of the
way the traffic is "load-shared" across the links, you won't get more data
between two hosts across a F/GEC than you would across a single link.

See:

When running STP, can fast etherchannel or giga etherchannel can't be
implemented??

Thanks.

yes it is. I have one and it works fine as a frame switch AND router with
isdn, serial, and token ring. A great multi-purpose device, and usually
cheaper than a 2522.

RE: Does session layer protocol use IP address ? [7:28378]

2001-12-08 Thread anil

This is from Cisco Oct 2001 Packet..
http://www.cisco.com/warp/public/784/packet/oct01/p76-training.html

It must be out of date :-)
-Anil

5. Session Layer
The session layer provides services in the application to manage inter-host
communication. Think of this function as the old-time telephone switchboard
operator: first, watching for a light on the switchboard indicating a
connection was needed, next connecting and monitoring the call, and then
finally disconnecting it by pulling the plug. For example, Network File
System (NFS) is like an extended feature Telnet program for UNIX that keeps
a connection (session) alive and available until the terminate command is
given. Other examples include Structured Query Language (SQL), Remote
Procedure Call (RPC), and X-Windows.

That's 40% right.

SQL, NFS, and XWindows are application-layer protocols.

RPC and NetBIOS are session-layer protocols.

We often have discussions about which books are best. Todd Lammle books can
teach you basic router configuration. They are often wrong where protocol
behavior is concerned.

A better reference for learning about OSI is the OSI paper by Howard
Berkowitz at http://www.certificationzone.com.

Router Simulation Software. Good or Bad?? [7:28544]

2001-12-08 Thread Rodel Usam

Hello all,

I am not new to the networking field but I have not gotten any
certifications. I purchased a CCNA Study Guide and I feel that it is
lacking the "hands-on" feel. I also, wanted to continue on to get my CCNP
Cert soon. I don't have the resources to purchase my own Cisco routers to
practice on, that's when I read up about Router Simulation programs. Which
is the best program out there? I need it to be good enough to assist with
the CCNA exam and continue on to the CCNP tests. Any suggestions would be
greatly appreciated.

Cert pursuer,

Rodel

OSPF/Frame -Network Type [7:28550]

2001-12-08 Thread McHugh Randy

I have 4 routers with a frame switch inbetween them and configured r1 is the
hub router with 2 dlci with one sub int to r2 and r3 and then 1 dlci with
another sub int going to r4. r3 is the only router with physical interface
and r1,r2,r3 all have sub interfaces and the dlci statements. R3 requires
map statments to reach r2 and r4 . My questions is about the network type
used in OSPF . If I change all frame ospf int network type to point to mulit
point all my routes show up and OSPF works fine, but if I use all non
broadcast OSPF net type then OSPF routes and are not there and OSPF does not
work right. This lab calls for me to use the non broadcast OSPF network
type. Does anyone know how I can make this config work using the non
broadcast OSPF network type instead of point to multipoint? Thanks in advance.

Re: 6500 IP routing, IPX bridging and routing. [7:28488]

2001-12-08 Thread Gaz

I asked the same question from pre-sales, and the answer was 'that's what
the customer has requested', so the whole job has been trying to provide
exactly what they requested.

But... tonight I telnet'd to the office and spent an hour or so changing
back to hybrid code and banking on the fact that I can pursuade the customer
that the 1 IP - 1 IPX solution is the only way.
Broad shoulder decision may be my downfall when I get on site, but too late
now.
The native IOS made a real mess of things.
This was my first taste of Native IOS on the 6000's. I had thought that it
would be more flexible than IOS for things such as multi port switching.
You live and learn.

Subject: OSPF/Frame -Network Type [7:28550]

Thanks in
advance.
Randy

Dialer keyword in Snapshot Server cmd [7:28557]

2001-12-08 Thread Ng, Kim Seng David (David)

Hi group,

What function does the 'dialer' keyword in the 'snapshot server'
command has?? For eg,

snapshot server 5 dialer

As I understand, this keyword is required for snapshot clients to allow
them to dial to servers as only clients dials to servers (Am I right?).
What function it has then for servers since they never dial to clients?

The Cisco CD says this about the keyword:

snapshot server active-time [dialer]

dialer = (Optional) Allows the client router to dial up the remote
router in the absence of regular traffic.

Thanks
David

Not sure if this addresses the second part of your question or not but...
This creates a dhcp pool on the router, and will hand out your 192.168.1.x
addresses..

ip dhcp pool localpool
   network 192.168.1.0 255.255.255.0
   default-router 192.168.1.1
   netbios-name-server x.x.x.x
   dns-server x.x.x.x
   netbios-node-type p-node
   domain-name blah.com
   lease 7

Hope this is helpful.

RE: Help [7:28545]

2001-12-08 Thread Chuck Larrieu

the ip host command serves to create a mini DNS server on the router. it
binds a hostname with an ip address. there might be a number of reasons for
setting things like this up on your router. for example, creating a series
of ip host name bindings for the routers on your network, so that you don't
have to remember ip addresses for ping and telnet purposes.

take the following example:

MANAGER#conf t
Enter configuration commands, one per line. End with CNTL/Z.

MANAGER(config)#ip host qwerty 216.115.102.77
MANAGER(config)#^Z

MANAGER#ping qwerty

Type escape sequence to abort.
Sending 5, 100-byte ICMP Echos to 216.115.102.77, timeout is 2 seconds:
!
Success rate is 100 percent (5/5), round-trip min/avg/max = 24/24/28 ms
MANAGER#

in the case presented, the command bound two different ips to that host name

this is the kind of thing that can be researched easily on CCO, using the
command references. Assuming you have a decent speed internet connection,
because some of the documents are very large.

HTH

Caslow's book is terrific - it clarifies some concepts that can be foggy in
good detail. I use the first edition, which had good configuration
information. If you can "spot the issues" as he likes to say, it really
helps you in the solution of almost any problem that comes up.

Good book - gives lab practice scenarios and goes through the solution
configurations in detail and some of the concepts of why it works.

If you've passed the written and you're working on your lab exam, I'd
suggest you sign up for the ccielab list on groupstudy.

I also use the following:
Routing TCP/IP Vol 1
Routing TCP/IP Vol 2
Internet Routing Architectures
Advanced IP Routing in Cisco Networks
CCIE Lab Study Guide
Cisco LAN Switching
and LOTS of resources from CCO which are 'indexed' at
http://www.cisco.com/warp/public/625/ccie/certifications/routing.html#35
(watch URL wrap)

Good luck in your studies

Enter the command "where" at the term server. That will tell you which line
is which.
Then you can clear what you want

Example:

Term_Serv#where
Conn HostAddress Byte Idle Conn Name
*  1 r7  1.1.1.10 0 r7
   2 r8 1.1.1.1459 r8
   3 r1 1.1.1.1046 r1
   4 r9 1.1.1.1423 r9

Term_Serv#clear line 1
[confirm]
 [OK]
Term_Serv#

Thanks

Actually, the link is
http://www.cisco.com/warp/public/625/ccie/certifications/routing.html#45

Also, as of 11/15/01, all routers in the lab are running 12.1 IOS. Keep
that in mind when you make your equipment purchases, because the 2500's
require 16M flash 16M RAM for any 12.1 images above basic IP.

You can get some representative lab scenarios at www.fatkid.com which will
give you a good idea of what equipment you need. Brad Ellis posts the
answer to this question quite often, and you can check through the October
or November archives to see his answers.

VLSM and IGRP into OSPF - Another Method [7:28567]

2001-12-08 Thread John Neiberger

Lately there have been a few posts regarding redistribution
issues between IGRP and OSPF. One in specific had the
following scenario:

R1(IGRP)-R2--(OSPF)--R3

The R1-to-R2 link is 172.16.1.0/24 and the R2 to R3 link is
172.16.2.0/28. Same major network, different subnet masks.

The issue is that we want R1 to see the 172.16.2.0/28 network,
but R2 won't advertise a /28 subnet of 172.16 out an interface
that has a /24 mask.

One solution we came up with was to add a loopback interface to
R2 and then assign a "dummy" OSPF area to it. This makes R2 an
ABR. Then you can use the area range command to summarize
the /28 into a /24 and it can then be redistributed into IGRP.
Notice that this allows R1 to see 172.16.2.0/24, not the /28.

Another method we discovered this morning was to use a tunnel
instead. Create a tunnel between R1 and R2 and give it a /28
mask, let's say 172.16.3.0/28. This alone will cause R2 to
advertise 172.16.2.0/28 to R1.

Now, to complete end-to-end connectivity you need to either add
the tunnel endpoint on R2 to the OSPF process or redistribute
connected on R2. This allows R3 to see the tunnel.

You now have end-to-end connectivity without the need to add a
new "dummy" OSPF area.

Do any of you have any other ideas? We've tried using
secondary IP addresses but have yet to make it work trying a
few different methods.

Regards,
John

Re: clearing a terminal server session [7:28560]

2001-12-08 Thread EA Louie

nope. show line would be a better command, because if the session did not
originate from that login, the where or sh session command wouldn't show the
used lines.

also, your clear line 1 should actually be discon 1. Clear line 1 will
disconnect line 1, which might not be the same as connection 1.

Hi Group,

Assume that I have a T1 line that need to be connected to a Windows NT 4.0
server running RAS. The goal is to allow 24 simultaneous call to the server.
What hardware do I need to provide this kind of connectivity?

Do I need 24 serial ports on the server, each connected to an external
modem?
If the answer is yes, how do connect these 24 modems to the T1 line?

Thanks

yep. remove the frame map statement and disable inverse arp on s0 of r4
(it's causing your failures from/to r1)

For r3, I'm assuming you can ping 172.16.1.1, so the pings aren't 'turning
the corner' from sub-int to sub-int. do a debug ip packet on r3, and see if
you get 'encapsulation failed'. If you do, think about what else you might
need on s0 of r3 to get to r4.

RE: Dialer keyword in Snapshot Server cmd [7:28557]

2001-12-08 Thread Shah Nick

This keyword is applied on both server & client, but it works on Clients
only. It is used in conjuntion with dialer map snapshot command, which
directs the string to dial etc.

>From what I understand its just one of the Cisco things, whereby you also
have to put in the dialer keyword (as in Snapshot server 5 dialer) on the
server end, but without the matching dialer map snapshot command (and also
due to server keyword) it never dials out and its also not meant to dial out.
