RE: VTP Pruning and Multicast [7:58577]

One Cisco Press book says this about VTP pruning:

...This means that it restricts broadcasts, mulicasts, and

Anyone one know what, if any, implications this has for OSPF
adjacencies? Specifically, I'm dealing with a proposed
topology where all of the access switches will have MSFCs.
OSPF will be used to support a multicast application. All
inter-switch links will be trunked due to a requirement that
any user be able to plug into any wall jack and log into
his/her VLAN (this will be accomplished via User Registration
Tool). So will every MSFC form an adjacency with every other
MSFC on every subnet/VLAN via the trunks? Or will a switch
without any active users in a given VLAN be pruned out and thus
 no adjacency?

I'm guessing the adjacencies will form. This is good in the
context of not needing to form a new adjacency at such time a
new VLAN user plugs in. It's bad in the context of how many
adjacencies will need to be maintained.

I realize that not every access switch necessarily needs an
MSFC to support multicast. This isn't my design. Just my
 potential problem to deal with...

 Thanks all,

 Scott

Well, I finally got to experiment with this topology. Not surprisingly,
OSPF adjacencies form in spite of the broad claim that VTP pruning restricts
multicast.

I'm still a little green with respect to large networks consisting entirely
of these blurred layer 2 / layer 3 boxes. I'm accustomed to a couple of
distribution or core devices having L3 capability, but not every single
switch in the network (some folks have deep pockets). So my concern that
adjacencies would unnecessarily form over every single VLAN (via the dot1q
trunks) was unfounded. On the access switches, simply configuring only
those VLAN interfaces that are absolutely necessary on the MSFCs limits
adjacencies to what is desired. Furthermore, there is always the option to
omit network statements in the OSPF config.

I wish I had this kind of lab at my disposal all of the time.
Unfortunately, I suspect that the users are about to stampede.

Scott

Hope your having a good weekend!

just checked logs on and have the messages
ip_rcv:ngetbuf fail and out of network buffers The
end users have not called and I dont want to wake a
sleeping dog on Sunday ( lol! ) so I am not sure what
app this user was using when this happened. I guess
that is my question or at least one of them. Is this
message indication problem on pc ? or network
equipment? server??
Anyone have any idea what this error could be
referring to? Maybe i can hit the ground running
tomorrow if you know what i mean.
Thanks to anyone who takes a moment to reply! :)

It sounds like DSL has a low mean time between failure (MTBF) but a high
mean time to repair (MTTR), which can be just as bad, especially if it's
your only backup. Of course, your mileage may vary (YMMV), depending on
the
service provider. Also, a service level agreement (SLA) would help, as
Chuck
mentions.

Does that message set a record for the number of acronyms used? :-)

CL: having done a number of data networks that were DSL based (
 but none
migrating ISDN to DSL ) I can offer this consideration: if a
 DSL link goes
down for whatever reason, it may take more than a couple of
 days for your
telco to get it back up and working. You will want to have some
 solid
service level agreements in place. DSL on the whole is
 extremely reliable.
The problem tends to be during those rare instances when it is
 down for
whatever reason, some telcos seem to have DSL repair low on
 their priority
 list.

CL: other than that caviat, why not?

Foundry serveriron problems [7:58767]

2002-12-08 Thread Mark Walmsley
Hi,

I know this board is strictly cisco but i have a problem that is somewhat
related, as you probably know the foundry kit uses alot of the same commands
as cisco kit so i thought you may be able to help.
I have a foundry serveriron and someone has erased the flash by mistake, so
now it only boots into boot monitor mode. I've tried to get it to boot via a
tftp server that i know holds some versions of the software but it's not
working, this maybe because the files on the server are .bin extension and
perhaps should be in a different format to boot from, maybe .img format but
i don't know how to convert the files, if that is what i need to do.
Also, i have the serveriron hooked up to a pc at the moment, i've given the
switch an ip address and def gateway from the limited commands available in
the boot monitor prompt but i can only ping the pc from the switch and can't
ping the switch from the p.c.
If anyone knows how to help me out i'd be very grateful, or does someone
know where i can download the correct .img or .bin os from foundry, i've had
a good look at the foundry site and can't find where to download a version
of software for the server iron.

Your help would be very much appreciated,

Mark.

Re: PPP events [7:58462]

2002-12-08 Thread Erick B.
Wolfgang,

Are these cisco routers on both sides ? do you have
control of both or not? It appears as this is an
async connection on this end (modem).

We get a input packet with CONFREJ (reject) but it
appears to get further later and rejects on IPCP. Then
theres a protocol reject (PROTREJ) inbound. Once sides
has a MRU of 2048 and other has MRU of 1524. I've seen
some PPP connections have problems with mismatched
MRUs.

Need to know more about the configs on both sides,
and possibly get debugs from both sides if possible.

Re: OT finding station trying to become MasterBrowser [7:58701]

2002-12-08 Thread srinivas kunthuri
Hi

There is a software called 3com network supervisor which is freely
downloadable from 3com website.
This software automatically generates a map of all connecting devices upto
workstations. If you need more details, find out on 3com website. If you are
having any doubts, please feel free to contact me.

Thanks/Regards,
K.Srinivas

Subject: OT finding station trying to become MasterBrowser [7:58701]

I don't think there's any answer to this, but I thought I would check. How
can I find the physical location of a system if I know the following:

NetBIOS name, IP address, MAC Address, and the Domain it is attached too.

I have a system that is trying to become the Master Browser and I've
discovered all of the above information. The problem is, it's a large flat
network, so the IP address comes from a huge pool and doesn't help
identify
a network segment. The NetBIOS name isn't helpful and the vendor code in
the
MAC address is shared by almost all the systems.

Any utilities that you know of that could help find this station?

It's a city-wide school system and driving around from school to school
isn't practical, although it is a rather small city... :-)

Any info would be great. Thanks.

 Priscilla

Show int fa0/1 summary [7:58777]

2002-12-08 Thread Matthew Webster
Hi all,

we are in the middle of a VoIP deployment using H.323. I have configured the
router to allow adequate bandwidth for each H.323 call based on the
available codecs etc. That's the background.

My problem/issue centers around the interface statistics. When I do a show
int fa0/1 summary command, the following output is given:

 *: interface is up
IHQ: pkts in input hold queue IQD: pkts dropped from input queue
OHQ: pkts in output hold queueOQD: pkts dropped from output queue
RXBS: rx rate (bits/sec) RXPS: rx rate (pkts/sec)
TXBS: tx rate (bits/sec) TXPS: tx rate (pkts/sec)
 TRTL: throttle count

Interface IHQ IQD OHQ OQD RXBS RXPS TXBS TXPS TRTL
--
* FastEthernet0/1   0  97480  3831  40009 00   0

Does anyone have any pointers to say why packets would be dropped from the
input queue (This particular interface is interfacing with our ISP) and
output queue? Also, why is teh tx rate at 0? Is it because at that point it
was not transmitting anything?

I guess there are many reason, but any help/experience would be appreciated.

thanks for your help,
Matthew.

Re[4]: off topic: Win2K 802.1q support? [7:57979]

2002-12-08 Thread thinkworker
Really?

But can u tell me why M$ not support VLAN of Intel Pro 10/100?

I can see VLAN support on FreeBSD for NE2K while I don't think M$ or
Novell support.

In fact, driver only need to append some more data on the data
sagement. That is just something driver can do, right? Remember, some
NIC can even change the MAC address of hardware.

.. and as far as I know, if it is supported on *nix, it definitely is
supported on M$. The CHIPSET of the NIC depicts what type of VLAN
support is provided- NOT THE O.S.!

The same is true for the ASICs in the Routers and Switches, which is why
some Routers and Switches only support ISL and others support both.

In fact I can make VLAN with Intel Pro10/100 with my FreeBSD box. That
is why I am so corious M$ do not support it.

I believe the original poster was asking about what specific Intel
 NICs
support 802.1q VLAN management at the workstation.

In any case, check out the following link, and look for drivers from
  there.

BTW- Some Intel NICs appear to only support ISL encapsulation, while
others look like they only support .1q encapsulation. Be sure to look
  closely!

  Hi,
VLANs are NOT created on the PC. U need to create them on a switch.
if ur connecting the win2k box to an access port on the switch, no
  special
lan card is required. What u have should work.
802.1q is a trunking protocol which will allow a trunk to carry more
  than
one VLANs. Theres nothing like 802.1q VLAN.
