Thanks to Helena...I passed BSCN 2.0 today!

2000-12-07 Thread Ariel

I met Helena on this forum. I hope all of you find someone as wonderful as
her.

My 1/2 cent on the Boson exam. Scored 850 +

Know your commands well. The show and router command format will be asked
of you. Know what mode the router must be in to enter the exam.
BGP for me was most of the test. Know the "basics", and commands. Know BGP
well or you will not do as well.
Then route optimization theories. Know route maps and stuff.
EIGRP was second in line. Understand how it interacts with redistribution
and NBMA.
RIP and IGRP show up only as Classful vs Classless. What are the attributes
of each?
OSPF, I can't recall one question.
Redistribution, about four questions.
Do you know how routing protocols pick best path? You should before going
in.

How did I study?
I listened to others on this forum. You will get lots of helpful tips from
others. So, that said, thank you everyone including yourself. Hope when
you pass a test you announce it here with some tips so we can congratulate
you.

I purchased the Exam Cram ISBN 1576106330 for BSCN Routing Exam 640-503. I
studied and lived this book for two weeks. This book provides a good
overview of what can be expected from the exam. However, not enough
material is provided. You will need to supplement this with a better book
or don't buy this. At the time I purchased this, no BSCN books were
available. Oh, there are some concepts like BGP and EIGRP similarities that
it does not explain well.

I then was approved, narrowly, to take the Cisco BSCN class. This was
helpful since there were issues with the book I was not clear on. I suggest
you always study before a class. Classroom is for review not as a fresh
introduction to material.didn't they teach you this in college? Cisco
BSCN is tough since it was my first Cisco class. So get lots of rest and
plan to stay till the end. BGP is introduced last, funny since it is the
bulk of the test. Stay late and do the labs

The NetCerts BSCN book was pretty good. The BGP part was great for
explaining the concept really well. Other than that, there are several
chapters I did not read. The chapters I skipped did not show up on the
test. Concentrate on IGRP, RIP, EIGRP, BGP, Route filters and
optimization...thats it!

Oh, the Cisco paper on the website 68 pages or so was not too helpful. If
you really want to know BGP, this is the way to go. But be sure to apply to
an ISP to get the most of it.
http://www.cisco.com/univercd/cc/td/doc/cisintwk/ics/icsbgp4.htm

I'm a slow learner so it took me three months to study. Here is some tips:
Don't watch movies or television. BIG waste of time.
Make flash cards
Get Boson's first exam for BSCN. If you don't, send ME your $100.
Listen to yourself in traffic. Ha! Tape record the lessons and listen to
them instead of music or car horns.
Most of all, be good to your spouse and family. This will take a lot out of
them too.

I could tell you word for word what will be on the exam, but what good will
this do you. You will pass the exams just to get fired on the job for
incompetence.
Enjoy.

Re: VLSM

2000-12-07 Thread Ariel

Prefix = Subnet mask , I was very confused of this until recently. Most
books will go back and forth on the terms.

Classful: RIP1 and IGRP: Will not pass subnet mask in routing updates. So
you cannot use this with Summarization or VLSM. It restricts to classful
addresses. This means Class A, B, or C.

Classless: OSPF, EIGRP, IS-IS, Supports VLSM. CIDR aka Supernetting.
You can adjust the subnet mask so not to restrict you to classul addresses.

VLSM: Variable Lenth Subnet Mask, I think of this as subnetting in a
subnet.

Get the Exam Cram book. It will give you an overview of the BSCN material.
This book helped me pretty good.

BSCN OSPF multi-area...summarized from Eric McMasters

2000-10-05 Thread Ariel

I finally got it. It helps if you draw a picture of what is happening.
Below is a message from Eric McMasters author of Routing Exam Cram. He
summarized it for me. I hope this helps someone. BTW, 100% positive some
part of this will show on the test. Thanks again Eric!!!

Look at it as a big picture. First you have your AS. Within this AS you
have multiple areas. Your intra-area routes are routes that are only passed
within a single area. Intra-area routes (LSA's 1 and 2) are the only routes
that are allowed in a totally stubby area. To gain access outside of the
area in a totally stubby setup routers have to use a default route from the
ABR. Intra-area routes do not go beyond the boundaries of the area itself.
Inter-area routes (LSA's 3 and 4) advertise routes outside of the area.
This allows a router in area 1 to know about a route in area 4. These
inter-area routes do not go beyond the boundaries of the AS. Now your
external routes (LSA 5) are routes that come from an external AS or another
protocol that is being redistributed into OSPF. These routes are propagated
across the entire network unless a stub, totally stub, or nssa are
configured. If this is the case the type 5 LSA's are stopped at the ABR.
Even by creating a "redistribute static subnets" or a "redistribute
connected" command under the OSPF process these routes will be treated as
External routes (Type 5 LSA's) and will be propagated across the entire
network. Now for a brief breakdown of the stub, totally stubby, and nssa
areas and how they operate.

With a stub area you are allowing inter and intra area routes (Type 1-4
LSA's). This will allow a router to know of a specific route in another
area along with specific routes in his own area. These are good because it
blocks Type 5 LSA's at the ABR, which are always flooded across a network.
For a router to gain access to route via another process or a route that is
being redistributed it will need to use a default route that is provided by
the ABR.

With a totally stubby area you are limiting the types of routes that are
propagating the area. In this case you are only allowing intra-area routes
(Types 1-2 LSA's). This is means that routers only know of routes within
their specific area. If they need to get to another area they will have to
use the default route that is provided by the ABR.

Now the most confusing is the NSSA or Not-So-Stubby-Area. According to the
rules of OSPF an area can not be a stub or totally stub area if a router in
that area is an ASBR (Autonomous System Boundary Router). An ASBR is a
router that connects two different AS's or a router that is "redistributing"
anything under the OSPF process. You have the option of creating a NSSA,
which is similar in function to a stub area in that it allows Type 1-4
LSA's, but it converts the Type 5 LSA's that are being created by the ASBR
into Type 7 LSA's. The Type 7 LSA's are converted back to Type 5's at the
ABR. The other option is to create a totally NSSA which is similar to the
totally stubby area, but only allows Type 1-2, and 7 LSA's.

I know that this is probably more that what you were looking for as far as
an answer to your question, but knowing which LSA's are used for what makes
the whole OSPF process easier to understand. For more on LSA's and OSPF in
general I would recommend that you go to the Cisco website and do a search
on "OSPF Design Guide". This design guide has some very useful information
and can help in understanding OSPF operation. You can also do a search on
"OSPF LSA types" and find out more on the OSPF LSA operation and functions.
Hope that I didn't overload you and that you found some of this information
useful. Thanks.

Advise....Should I purchase routers ? How do you study for an exam?

2000-10-09 Thread Ariel

Do you use routers to study as a study tool to pass your CCNP? Does it help
you?

I am contemplating on purchasing some routers to assist me in passing the
exams and learn the equipment. My company will not send me to class, but
will pay for my books. I pasted the CCNA, but I missed the ACRC test by
three questions, now I am gun shy. Money is an object, I don't have much.
However, I understand it is my future and I should invest in myself.

PLEASE...answer me this... what routers should I purchase, what books would
be valuable to buy, most of all, how do you study? I need your help.
Please take the time to reply.

Regards.

Re: VLAN problems with Catalyst 3548G

2000-06-05 Thread Ariel

From what I recall only 1 VLAN interface can be up at one time. Think of
the VLAN interfaces like the sc0 interface on a Cat5000 in that you can
assign the VLAN and IP address of the switch itself for telnet/SNMP or
other remote access to the switch. The difference being you don't have to
reconfigure the VLAN interfaces when you want to change them, just shut one
down and no shut the one you want to work.
If you shutdown the VLAN 1 interface then do a no shut on the VLAN100
interface it should come up, make sure you have console access or telnet
access to the IP address you assigned to the VLAN 100 interface or the
switch may become unreachable..

Also note that even though the VLAN 100 interface is down that VLAN 100
would still exist and work for any ports that belong to that VLAN..

This is the same behavior as the Cat2900XL switches..

I hope this is what you were looking for...

Re: DSL

2000-06-09 Thread Ariel

No, it's not really possible. DSL uses ATM PVC's that originate on a DSLAM
in your local CO. You have an ATM PVC from your home DSL CPE that is
mapped across the telco's ATM network and finally terminates on a router at
your ISP. Some ISP's may offer an additional service that will allows the
PPP session that rides over your PVC to terminate on a corporate router but
it's usually as part of remote-access contract between your company and the
ISP.

So, simply put DSL uses static ATM PVC's and does not offer the same
dynamic nature as ISDN does...

BSCN; Inter vs.Intra

2000-09-26 Thread Ariel Banzon

Thank all.

I still have a hard time with these two; intra and inter.

I still get confused. In the OSPF with multiple areas, it describes how
stub area carries Intra-area and Inter-area routes but not routes external
to the AS.

Is intra-area routes, routes with in the area?
Is inter-area routes, routes outside of the area, but does not include
routes outside of the AS?

It would help if you can give me some help with this concept.

Re: Review of Routing ExamCram Book

2000-09-26 Thread Ariel Banzon

Luuukkkee;

The order I've seen recommended appears to be BSCN, Remote Access, BCMSN,
and CIT. I've started studying the BSCN last week. I've read and outlined
the entire Routing ExamCram Book (2X), ISBN1576106330. I loved it. It is a
good overview of the material. This is good before diving into the Cisco
book (not yet published). McMasters, publisher of Routing scans this site
for questions and is very kind. Book is easy to read. The other book is
Internet Routing Architectures by Halabi. This is tough, must read book for
the BGP part of the exam. It appears only Chapter 5 is useful.

I missed the ACRC exam on the last day the test was given by 2 questions.
I used only one book, Sybex, big mistake. I rushed through the studies. I
don't plan to miss it again. So I have some knowledge of the material. I am
trying to get together a private study group for BSCN (Routing exam).
Communication will be via email. I just started the CCNP course. If you
would like to work together, give me a reply. Oh, you will need to read and
outline the ExamCram as well. Then, I will send you all the neat things I've
collected. Let me know if you are serious. Oh, I will not take a class nor
have a router available. I am strictly book study...trying to do with what I
have a tiny brain. I plan to take the test in four weeks.

BGP. I missed the ACRC by 3 questions, I guess I did not know it. However,
it only had 1 question at the time on BGP. I would look into purchasing a
new BSCN book.

I've recently learned from my publisher that the CISCO version of BSCN book
is delayed for release. Try Examcram.com. I'm not sure how good their
book is. If it is as good as their Windows NT stuff, I'd bank on it. Here
are the books I've ordered for this test. Keep in touch if you want to pal
around for the BSCN test. I can be reached at

These are the books I've been told are good. Decide for yourself. Cisco
version is delayed 'again' till end of month.
