Questions on Routers for my lab [7:2338]

2001-04-27 Thread Eugene Nine

I'm looking at a decent deal on three routers. Can somone tell me if one of
the hub ports on a 2516 and a 2507 can be router to. I am assuming since
the whole group is a hub the whole group acts as eth0 right. A router
wouldn't be any good would without a LAN port of some sort?

The first link is word for word the same as the Doc I have on building a

Re: Cisco PIX vs Checkpoint FIrewall-1 [7:2878]

2001-05-03 Thread Eugene Nine

PIX goes up to layer 4, so it won't do things like URL filtering.
Checkpoint (or other SW) can do higher layer protection but may not be as
well at the lower layers (due to security holes in the OS, etc)

Re: Cisco PIX vs Checkpoint FIrewall-1 [7:2878]

2001-05-04 Thread Eugene Nine

Well I opened a can of worms with this one. I do know of web sense, I
beleive I have read that Cisco is not going to be selling it in the future,
someone correct me if I am wrong there. So far a properly configured PIX
has never been beat, there have been news stories of PIX's that have been
beat, but upon investigation there has been some config issue involved. So
the recommended setup it to have more than one level that way if someone
finds a hole in one layer, they hit another layer, this helps out if
security hole happens to be found in any box, software or hardware as well
as helps when there are any config mistakes that allow a hole. I hope I
explained myself better this time.

Re: CCIE prep - review lab inventory and budget [7:3908]

2001-05-09 Thread Eugene Nine

Here's what I have so far:
2524 w/ 1 4 in one module
2516
2507
2 DTE cables and 1 DCE cable
all above for $1843 (bought it all in one purchase because I had $1900 to
spend)
One 10U desktop rack $55

Next I'm thinking one of the access servers to setup the reverse telnet
deal.

So whats so special about the 3920? The only thing I see is Joken ring.
I'm just starting my CCNP so IE is realistically a year out. Do you think
with the rate companies are ditching joken ring gear it will still be on the
test by then. Crapple talk has gone pretty much gone away.

Re: Gear for CCNP and CCIE preperation! [7:4058]

2001-05-10 Thread Eugene Nine

Here's the site I used www.horizondata.com ,they are redoing their web site
right now so the list is not up to date, call and get a recent list, plus
they are expecting a shipment in next week. I purchased three 2500's to
start my lab. I am just starting the CCNP track and from what I can tel you
need at least three in a loop so you can break the redundant link and watch
the routing protocols work.

For setting up a lab, Cisco has a document titled "Resource Guide for
Building a CCIE Lab" I have a soft copy I downloaded but I'm not sure
exactly where I found it. It gives suggestions for a 3-6 router lab.

Re: Ram in 2500 series [7:6187]

2001-05-29 Thread Eugene Nine

Not any memory, but memory that meets all the specs. I don't know for sure
what all the specs are (someone told me it was parity memory). The 2500 wil
do max of 16M. I dug through my parts box and started plugging in memory
untill I found a 16M that worked. It makes sense that Cisco wouldn't take
the time and money to design some memory when there are standards in place
and all they have to do is look through a book and pick a standard type. So
moust routers will take some kind of standard (as well as most other
hardware, for example HP printers). The one thing though I would only want
to try it in a lab not a production environment where you may need to call
Cisco for support.

I'm small too, not quite as small as you but still in the same boat. I
prefer to use my brian to fine more ceative ways to do the heavy work. You
will find all kinds of shortcuts like putting two screws in the rack to
balance the rack ears on to hold the weight while you put in the mounting
screws, etc. You will also spend more time balancing a laptop hooked to the
console port than you will lifting the equipment. Also with a CCNP/CCDA
salery you can afford a gym thats open 24/7

Re: Dead 2501 - further update [7:11865]

2001-07-11 Thread Eugene Nine

Its a hyperterm thing, play with the connection settings, emulation and such
and it should start working. I've seen where Hyperterm is set to auto and
it detects the emulation wrong and I have also seen where hyperterm is set
correctly and is doesn't work unless set to auto. At very least download
the free hyperterm upgrade, or better yet find a better term program (at
leat thats what everyone says, I try not to rely on other programs since you
can't take anything with you to a CCIE lab you might was well learn on the
minimum)

Help on Laod balancing [7:25921]

2001-11-12 Thread Eugene Nine

I and at a new client who has two connections to the internet, one is a T1,
and the other is a cable modem. They have the cable modem for backup, but
it is only being connected to one web server at the moment so if the T1
fails they have to swap patch cords to make us of the cable modem. I was
going to plug them both into a router and setup to load balance between the
two, however the clinet wants to control how much load goes where. They
want to T1 primarily used for the developers and the cable modem primarily
for the office staff. Can I control who gets what connection? My though
was to set up two vlans on their switches and set one connection in each
vlan, then a router between vlans as a higher cost path. Anyone have
comments.
