Re: PIX PDM [7:74758]
"Our security group is recommending not to use PDM to configure our Pix firewalls. They did not give any reason for their recommendation. Does anyone know why PDM should not be used?" From what I understand there are a few commands that can't be used from the PDM (they require the use of the CLI), also using a web-based configuration tool seems to undermine the very premise of network security, if you think about it how many companies use the other web-based software (for configuration) that Cisco has made available. Also , if you look at the software that Cisco has produced in the past it hasn't been very reliable (due to the fact that it is freely available and gives no ROI) an example would be their TFTP server software or the Cisco Configmaker. From what I understand the PDM was made available to compete with the other vendors web based configuration software, obviously there is a demand from the customers for such software(So it could be possible that Cisco is actually making am attempt on this one), but whether or not PDM is just a marketing tool or a viable configuration solution I don't know. What is the reason that you are considering using the PDM software in the first place??? Redistribution of connected routes??? [7:74447]
I have searched high and low for an explanation as to why I occasionally have problems when redistributing, if I don't use a redistribute connected statement and try to use the IGP to advertise a connected network. Hopefully I don't confuse anyone or myself, but here is the issue I ran into yesterday. This is a small part of the topology where I was having the issue. OSPF OSPF R1-R2 ISISISIS So basically I have two routers that I have both OSPF and ISIS running on, after completing my mutual redistribution I noticed that the OSPF database did not contain a Type 5 LSA for the physical interface that is connected to the ISIS domain(on R1 and R2), I falsely assumed that by mutually redistributing I would have no problem passing that network into the OSPF domain, but it didn't work. So I used the redistribute connected with a route map on both routers and I then had the route. I have seen this before, but am perplexed by the fact that I don't understand why the initial redistribution didn't work in this case. Please enlighten me! I couldn't agree more, buy from Ebay! Also if you already have purchased a lab book, buy equipment that fits its topology or look at the available lab books on the market that you may purchase and construct a lab that would accommodate any of their topologies. Re: CCIE:Security Practical Studies [7:72162]
What bothers me is that Cisco's implementation of a protocol doesn't always match the RFC. At least from my limited experience in reading the RFC's; OSPF for example should not be able to summarize the backbone area, but in Cisco's implementation of OSPF you can summarize area 0. I hear Cisco might remove that from the IOS, but who knows. On the other hand if you can wade through the RFC's your understanding of how the protocol was intended to work, will increase dramatically. I wish I had the time to get deep into the RFC's, but unfortunately at this point in my studies it probably isn't going to help me in the Lab in a few weeks. As always, I appreciate any insight from the rest of the group! Regards, Jason ""Howard C. Re: CCIE:Security Practical Studies [7:72162]
The individuals writing the book probably aren't privy to any exam content changes that are around the corner unless they are a part of the CCIE team, another misconception is that Cisco Press is in close contact with technology changes that Cisco Systems is actually working on. What many people don't understand is that it takes a while to write and publish a book in a cost effective manner, so if any exam content or new technology is released during the process the changes probably won't be reflected. Nothing is perfect, you should never rely on one source being the definitive resource for your studies. Reading the configuration guides and command references can prove to be quite beneficial. EIGRP OSPF DUAL MUTUAL REDISTRIBUTION [7:70643]
Can't figure this one out. I am mutually redistributing eigrp into ospf (dual redistribution points) and vice versa, I also have a separate redistribution point in the eigrp domain which introduces external (AD170) routes into the Eigrp domain, upon redistribution into OSPF these (external eigrp) routes are given an AD of 110, creating suboptimal routing. The only solution I could devise was based on modifying the distance of the external routes in the eigrp domain. What would be the best approach to tackle the problem, Any insight would be greatly appreciated!! John, It's definitely worth it. I like it better than the other lab books because it takes you through the main protocols individually, and then lets you run wild in the multi-protocol labs. Re: Workbook homelab ? [7:65161]
Also Keep in mind that many of the companies selling the major labs have only a few tasks to be configured on some of the perimeter routers(in my experience), they really just want you to rent rack time from them at outrageous prices. The labs can be modified to give you the same learning experience although it requires a great deal of time and effort! Well just print out another few hundred pages and you'll be there. The Configuration guide is pretty good. I haven't attempted the lab yet but would assume the following items are likely to be seen: trunking, etherchannel, unicast routing, multicast routing, VTP, Vlan-maps, fallback-bridging, layer 2 and 3 access-lists, just to mention a few. But then again you won't find out until you shell out the $1250.00!! I also find myself frustrated with the fact that anything is fair game, but that's what makes it the CCIE! Good luck! I have it installed on XP pro and everything works but every I try to open CiscoView I get an error, I already tried reinstalling it twice. Its weird because a friend of mine has it running fine on XP pro. I don't think that helped too much , good luck! ATM Question? [7:54753]
This may be a stupid question, but I thought I'd ask anyway. Is there any possible way with any router platform or IOS to turn a router with multipleATM interfaces into an ATM switch. Once again, this is a wild question, stemming from the fact that it can be done with frame-relay. Since this is probably very unlikely, what are the groups opinions on the various CCIE R&S rack rentals online, and which ones seem to provide the highest ROI. TIA!!! CCIE Practice Labs? [7:50987]
I apologize in advance if this topic frequents the study group, but I was wondering what peoples' opinions are on the different practice labs for sale out there. Re: CCNP Questions [7:46098]
The 500 exams for the ccnp are no longer(as of last week). But you should be able to use the cisco books you have already purchased, for the 600 series exams. The objectives are the same, just a new pool of questions. I took two of the exams in the beta form, an had used the books you mention. I am not positive, but I believe the exams are good for three years.
