Re: Certification Zone

2001-03-15 Thread John Huston

I had the same experience with some lady today.

I was trying to get receipt for my purchase and the lady was so rude that I
finally got frustrated and hung up. I called once before find out if I
could take the "practice tests" more than 2 times in a month, the lady
(probably the same one) told me that she did not know. When I asked to
speak to someone who would know, she told me that she was the one and I
could just read the web page.

I am like the other "John" when you call with a reasonable request, and
someone is rude to you, it leaves a long lasting impression regardless how
good things are.

I never dated any "witches" because well I didn't want to catch anything
that would make me sick. Besides, I never found someone like very
intellectually stimulating.

Re: CID help/Sybex Book Review

2000-12-13 Thread John Huston

Caveat Emptor. Quick and dirty review after taking the test.

With all due respect to the author(s), I do not recommend the Sybex book
mentioned below for use to study the 640-025 test.

The book is deficient in the areas of X.25, SNA, Campus Lan Design,
Desktop Protocol Design, Wan Design and especially security. I do
recommend the Cisco Press book because all of the areas that I was tested
over are adequately covered and in greater detail. This is the second Sybex
book that I have purchased that is inadequate. I found Sybex is good for
Microsoft and Novell but so far it is a batting a zero for Cisco.

Additionally, the Boson tests lack in the correct content.

Recommendation. Unless you must pass the 640-025 test soon, I would wait
until the self study material catches up with the new CID test. Until then
make sure that you buy the Cisco Press book *Cisco Internetwork Design* by
Matthew Birkner and make you own study questions via the program at
www.openwindow.com. The attached links will help you with your studies over
SNA. There are probably more and better links but these are the ones that I
have found so far.

Good Luck,

Re: CID help/Sybex Book Review

2000-12-16 Thread John Huston

While the CID test is challenging, it is easily passed if the complete and
well presented material is available to learn from. I noticed that Boson
responded quickly by revising their tests. Perhaps Sybex will quickly
respond with additions and corrections that can be downloaded. In a rapidly
changing environment like IT/IS it would seem best to have the ability to be
adaptive and informative.

Robert's response to my message indicated that I was making a personal
critique rather than a review of the book. I am sorry if my communication
gives this impression. Again, my reason for advising about the book is to
help others in this forum who like me are here to learn from mistakes, share
experiences and then build upon them. While this forum isn't perfect, it
does an excellent job of convenient cooperative learning. My remarks were
not scathing, just factual.

As to Robert's request to give a more detailed critique of the book, I am
not completely familiar with the Cisco's Non-Disclosure Agreement but would
assume that I/we would be violation of the agreement to do a
question-by-question comparison of the exam to the material of the book in a
public or private forum. Rather, I suggest that Robert re-take the 640-025
exam and then respond with the additions and corrections to the book that
could be easily obtained. Outside of that, I am available on a fee basis.
;-)

I further suggest to Robert/Sybex that the phrase on outside cover and on
page xxix "Everything You Need to Know to Pass the Cisco Internetwork Design
Exam" be removed. Considering Robert's qualifying remarks to me, probably
supports the need to do this. This was not my experience and evidently not
so for others as well.

I did find the book easy to read but, lacked the necessary content to pass
the 640-025 exam which has been my experience with Sybex books written for
Cisco exams. On the hand, I have had positive experiences using Sybex
books while pursing my CNE and MSCE certifications. The Sybex book for the
Microsoft Exchange 5.5 exam was so well written that I was able to read it
in a week and then pass the exam without any other material.

Happy Holidays.

I bought this study kit and then passed the exam two weeks later.
Everything you need is on the CD. Caveat Emptor. If you are expecting a
hardcopy book to come with it then, you need to buy one.\

The CD comes with over 400 practice questions as well as an E-Book. Very
handy and very informative.

On an unrelated point. I called Cisco the other day and asked if you needed
to take the CCDA in addition to the CID test in order to get your CCDP if
you were already a CCNP and they said all you needed was the CID test. If
you have already passed the CID test, I don't think you need the CCDA test

I recommend all of them . I found Boson tests to be harder than the
certification exam so I was pleasantly surprised when I clicked on the last
question button and passed. :) At $29.95/test Boson tests are a great
hedge.

Re: Boson tests for CIT

2001-01-03 Thread John Huston

Quick and dirty review.

The tests are not 1 for 1 to the actual exam but, they are about as close as
you can get without Boson violating the infamous Cisco Non-Disclosure
Agreement. I found the Boson CIT and ACRC tests were actually harder than
the Cisco Exam so it was a pleasant surprise when I passed the exams. As a
recommendation, I have used Boson tests on every Cisco certification that I
have passed. The only negative comment I have is on the CID tests. I
haven't had much luck with those but, Boson has revised them so, it seems to
be a timing issue. I also had problems with the book that I studied
originally from . Now that I have the CID book from Cisco and the revised
Boson tests, I should be able to pass the CID exam in no time.

Boson's test authors are responsive to correcting mistakes. I usually get a
response within 8 hours, unless I send a an email at 8:00PM. Additionally,
the authors are always ask about ways to improve their product and listen to
suggestions. So, if you need some help and give them some constructive
feedback they usually get right on it.

The CIT exam is not difficult if you have the right study material and study
Vigorously for it. I used the books from Cisco and by the one written by T.
Thomas from McGaw Hill, all three Boson Tests and the Cisco website. I'd
suggest that if you are doing self-studying that you use both books. It
takes a little more time but you'll get two perspectives that will help you
with retention and understanding.

The CIT exam is not for the faint of heart or for folks with Attention
Defect Syndrome. At first I was disappointed that Cisco asked fairly
convoluted questions until I realized that Cisco is testing you ability to
sort out the real issues in the minutia as well as your technical knowledge.

Good luck on the CIT exam.

JH

A+ N+ CNE, MCSE, CCNP, CCDA, some other crap, and hopefully a CCDP soon ;-)

P.S. I am using Boson's CCIE practice tests too.

I agree this test was very good. The others for the CCNP track are not
however. The BCRAN and Switching tests were not relevant to the material
being test over so save your money on those. I'm looking at the CCPrep.com
folks for other tests. I understand that their people go down and take the
tests every two months to see if they are in the ballpark or not.

I found their products to be accurate and very reasonably priced. I passed
all of my exams using the tests. They are not a one-to-one or
question-for-question, but they do an excellent job preparing you for the
topics covered on the Cisco Exams. Plus they are really nice people to work
with.

In short, I highly recommend them.

CCNP Study Group

2000-06-13 Thread John Huston

I am curious if anyone would be interested in writing and trading questions
for the CLSC, CIT and BCRAN tests? I am using a program called Winflash
that works like (if not better) than the Boson tests. You can download a
demo version of the program at www.openwindow.com If we pool our labor it
would make the process more efficient.

Please reply to this group if you are interested.

CCNP Study Group

2000-06-14 Thread John Huston

Dear Group:

You are receiving this message because you expressed an interest in joining
a CCNP study group.

The message below is from the author/owner of Winflash. He has agreed to
host our questions to make it more convenient for us to up/download them.
The only prerequisites are that you 1.) Buy the Winflash program at
www.openwindow.com and 2.) Contribute 20-30 questions and answers per
chapter of the book that you are of studying in. Questions and answers can
be accompanied with sounds, hints, graphics, etc. You are only limited by
your imagination. The folks at Openwindow cannot monitor who contributes and
who doesn't. THEREFORE THIS IS AN HONOR SYSTEM.

If we think of contributions in the same way that the various programmers
have provided code and programs for the Linux operating system I think you
will agree that the potential for certification becomes more efficient.
Please send any other suggestions and soon as you can so we can get to work
and start making the big bucks. Below are suggested guidelines to keep in
mind about contributing questions and answers. They are not the law, only
suggestions to help keep us organized.

1.) Do not plagiarize anything. The best thing to do is make up your own
questions and answers.

2.) Do not so anything violate that might jeopardize your non-disclosure
agreement with CISCO.

3.) Try to contribute some of the more obscure information that that we
might be tested over.

4.) Contribute as much as you can.

5.) Do your best and don't worry if everything isn't perfect. Provide as
much as you can and don't bite off more than you can chew. Also

please commit to a due date as to when will have your Q&A's done by.

6.) Compliment your peers often. They will contribute more if they think it
is appreciated.

My Roles and Responsibilities

I will personally provide 300-400 questions for the CLSC exam
640-404(http://www.cisco.com/warp/public/10/wwtraining/certprog/testing/pdf/

this exam expires in July but I do not have any other course study material
at this time.

Your Roles and Responsibilities

Please submit to the group what you are willing to work on and when you will

Good luck to everyone taking the tests and I hope that you will enjoy

That's probably good from the standpoint that you should achieve a higher

Do not send an email reply to this message. It will be ignored. Reply only
to the group on the NNTP server.

As promised, I have posted the practice questions for the Cisco Lan
Switching Configuration (640-404) or Building Cisco Mulitlayer Switched
Networks (BSMSN) (640-504) tests. The questions can be downloaded at
http://www.openwindow.com/pages/wfusers.htm. I will be making up other
questions for the BCRAN and the CIT 2.0 exams. In order to get those you
MUST provide me with your contribution to the practice questions. A minimum
of 3 chapters is required. I am starting with the BCRAN test as of today.

Overload it by port so you are doing PAT instead of NAT. Is NAT a
requirement?
If so then create a second pool however it cannot be the same ip addresses as
the first pool. Perhaps you could layout your objective with a little more

Re: How to set default route in 3550 [7:51616]

2002-08-19 Thread John Huston

The 3550 works like a 2951 or a like any Cisco IOS router. I assume you
have a
layer three 3550 that has all Gigabit ports in it? If so then, the default
route would be

0.0.0.0 0.0.0.0

The Cisco site has quite a few of them. Please refer to the URL below.

and this URL will help you with other sample configs.

Voice Certification [7:53165]

2002-09-11 Thread John Huston

I have two questions.

1.) What is good self study material for the Deploying Quality of Service in
Enterprise Networks Exam (DQOS 9E0-601) test?

2.) Has anyone had any luck getting picked up with little or now experience
with a voice certification in additions to their other
certifications?

Thank you in advance for your opinions.

How about posting the complete config with a brief explaination? We don't
need
the passwords or the actual IP addresses.

When to put a dash [7:54802]

2002-10-03 Thread John Huston

Does anyone know if there is a rule in Cisco commands that helps you remember
when to put a dash in a command and when not too? For example the command
IP
RTP HEADER-COMPRESSION. What signals that you need a dash between header and
compression? I've never figured this out.

Thank you in advance for your help.
