RE: Flash SIMMs the same? [7:35876]

2002-02-19 Thread Kelly D Griffin

The 16Mb FLASH module for the 2600 will also work in the 3600 series
routers. The 8Mb FLASH module for the 2500 series will also work in the
3600 series. They are physically the same memory and we have sold
hundreds for both applications.

FYI

Answer:

I think they are the same kind of flash SIMM for the 2600 and 3600
routers. I put a 3640 flash simm into a 2620 router and I was able to
erase it and copy a 2620 IOS onto it.

Unfortunately, my intention was to put a 3640 IOS onto the SIMM from a
Cisco 2600 router platform for future trouble shooting purposes. Just in
case I didn't have another 3600 router around to do it.

I wasn't able xmodem or tftpdnld a 3640 IOS onto the SIMM. I get a error
message stating ERR:File not a valid executable. I'm pretty sure its
because the 2600 hardware will not recognize a 3600 IOS.

Just incase your ever curious. =)

Have fun.

Thank you for the input. I know the part numbers are different from
Cisco but comparing the two simms from a 2600 and 3600 router they look
the exact same size and contacts.

I thinking about trying it out. I will let you know. =)

 Hello Group,

 Quick Question:

I'm wondering if the flash SIMMs that go on the motherboard
 for a 2600 and
3600 routers are the same? It would be good to know for
 trouble shooting

 Thanx for the info

I know that sales promotions are not allowed on this forum, but I need to

This could certainly make a difference. There is also the issue

Re: Yet another Terminal Server Question [7:13396]

2001-07-23 Thread Kelly D Griffin

You need to learn how to do reverse telnet from a Cisco router. This will
allow you to connect to multiple devices while being vty'ed or console'ed
into a router. It is not that you need to be local, but it comes in handy
if you have a remote router that has a modem and it is AUX-CON cabled to
another router. This way you can manage multiple devices with one modem.

p.s. You may need to know it for the CCIE Lab.

I keep seeing 500-CS, 2509, and 2511 thrown out as suggestions for a
terminal server, but aren't these a little expensive when you really
 just want a serial switch?

Is there a reason that more people don't use a simple serial switchbox
for home lab study? I'm looking through the Black Box catalog and I see
 part # SW077A for $133.00. It's a 6-to-1 RJ-45 switch. Is there some
reason why I wouldn't be able to get one of those instead of spending
hundreds of dollars on a 2509?

I keep thinking there must be something I'm missing because I don't
recall seeing anyone suggest a switchbox for this application. If
there's a reason for it, I'd like to know before I spend the dough on
 the switch.

 Thanks!

 Geeze,
I have only been without a job 2 weeks and I have been doing independent
contract work like crazy during that time. It takes time to interview for
jobs, especially in my pay range. Company's don't just look at your
number
and hire you on the spot, At least not any company I want to work for.

To answer Elmers question: Yes, the market is very different now.
Especially in the VAR area. Small VARs are struggling to make 2 or 3
points
on hardware sales. Grey market hardware from auctions and bankruptcies
is
everywhere. Large resellers like ATT and SBC (sorry Chuck) are drop
shipping at cost, it seems, just to make a little margin on deployment.

Another factor that seems to be affecting CCIE employment around the bay
area is the layoff at Cisco. Believe it or not, Cisco laid off quit a few
of them recently, and they are all looking for jobs. I recently
interviewed
at a job where they specifically want a CCIE and they had 10 interviews...
10 That was unheard of a year ago!! Maybe it's just like this in
the
Silicon Valley, I don't know. All I know is the market is very soft right
now around here. I know I'll find a job though. I just can't be picky.

So is the CCIE market saturated ? I don't know, maybe. Does the high
tech
economy suck right now ? Hell yes !! However, ebb and flow is the way
capitalism works. Things are certain to get better.

So you who are going for your high end certs, keep studying !! You will
be
in a better position when things get better.

Check with your service provider and see how they have this connection
routed. They may route through the UK or something completely out of the
way.

Right now I'm dealing with a situation in which my company has two
redundant
frame relay links to Botany Australia. One through Sprint, and the other
through ATT. We were experiencing really bad latency on the ATT link
(up
to 1.2 seconds), so I moved all the traffic over to the Sprint link once
it
was installed. No change, though, in the latency. I used Concord Net
Health to measure the latency, and it was *exactly* the same over both the
ATT link and the Sprint link - they spiked at the exact same times, and
to
the same degree. They must be going over the same satellite link or
whatever, but *something* is amiss here

The world is a single point of failure. :-

Seriously, something often overlooked - the ISP's themselves, their
 backbones, their peering.

Not too long ago, up in the Sacramento area, some folks found out the hard
way that even though they were dual homed, both ISP's used the same
backbone
provider. When that provider had a failure, both ISP's were down ( along
with several others in the area, all of whom used this same Tier 1 as
their
 backbone )

If the customer really does require absolute complete redundancy then
you
and they should be doing a lot of research.

I have a client who needs absolute complete redundancy for their
Internet
 service.

I assume they should be using 2 separate links with different ISPs. What I
don't have hands-on experience with is the physical connections and HSRP.

Will I connect both routers to the local switch and then configure HSRP
 between them?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Subject: Frame Relay backup issue... [7:3686]

 Hi Guys,
Been a while since I've written to the list (guess that's kind of a
good
thing). Fairly simple question here: Lets say there is a company with a FR
network with a hub/spoke topology. When data is sent from a site, alot of
times the backup link kicks up, even though the primary never went down. I
remember this type of scenario in my readings but forget what the
possibilities are. The simplest answer would be that they are
oversubscribing
their access on the line and the backup's kicking up. Or the line is just
bad...but I doubt that. What are some possible scenarios that would cause
 this
issue. I'm not asking for free answers to this but I would appreciate it
if
someone could point me in the right direction in terms of reading up on
this.
 Thanks guys...good to be back.

Re: encapsulation [7:3701]

2001-05-09 Thread Kelly D Griffin

PPP is usually used for DDR instead of Point-to-Point. I have used PPP on
PTP links, but just for inter-operability issues with a 3Com router
connecting to our 7513. PPP allows PAP/CHAP authentication which you will
not need on a PTP. HDLC is the default on a Cisco router and should work
fine between two Cisco shops.

Should I use hdlc or ppp encapsulation on a point to point connection
between two wan sites. The connection is used to access data. And also
what is the benefit and disadvantages of using one over the other.
Thanks.

April 1st through April 28th, Cisco ran a special for resellers that would

Try to buy SMARTnet maintenance on one of their items. Can't be done
because they are open box, on the wholesale market. Check a serial number
on one and call Cisco to find out its history. You won't like what you
hear.

www.startechmicro.com is another one of these resellers. They are not
authorized resellers either.

If this doesn't make a difference to you, then more power to you.

Well, that's the same story I hear everytime I mention LanBlvd to anyone,
but the fact is that they have been selling Cisco equipment for the lowest
prices since I started buying from them 8 months ago, and I am sure that
they will sell you that switch for that price.

I had a long discussion with a sales rep. from CDW about it, because he
wanted me to buy it from them. I finally ended it by telling him beat the
 price or loose the sale.

There's only one way to find out

The only function that the bandwidth statement performs is the election of
administrative cost in routing protocols. It will also set the bandwidth

i don`t mean to be rude ,but i was essential correct..

if you set the bandwidth command to 64k and you have a CIR of 128K yo will
only get 64K...But as my good friends have pointed out the default is
1.544kb..but i was just trying to make that point stand out that it`s
the serivce provider who makes the call about the info rate...

I`m sorry if i`m bieng ANAL about this i just wanted myself to be clear..

ohhh no the bandwidth statement in the interface is *manually*
entered
(defaulted at 1544 Kbit for a serial interface), and is used to
calculate:
 1. metrics for routing protocols, and
 2. bandwidth utilization in the "show interfaces" display
so it's important to have it set correctly.

Some frame relay carriers (Sprint and PacBell come to mind) do not
transmit
their CIR, so 'show frame-relay map' doesn't display their CIR.

The frame relay provider does need to be contacted to increase CIR.
Higher
CIR usually translates into a cost increase for the circuit.

Here's an explanation of EIR - also see
 http://www.nwfusion.com/newsletters/frame/1108fr2.html and
 http://www.nwfusion.com/newsletters/frame/1206fr1.html

EIR is the difference between the port speed of the frame relay service
and
the CIR. The port speed is set by the frame relay service provider, and
 may
be lower than the maximum interface speed - for example, on a T-1
circuit,
the provider could provide a 384kbps port and a 128k CIR. In this case,
 the
EIR = 256k, and it would be wise to set the interface bandwidth to 384k
(bandwidth 384 on the serial interface) to match the port speed. And the
port speed is usually the maximum rate at which one can oversubscribe the
PVC (that is, it is usually the frame relay burst rate)

The moral of the story - just because there is an *access circuit* at a
particular transmission rate does not assure you that you burst at that
rate. The interface is rate-limited to the port speed that was ordered
 from
 the frame relay carrier.

your CIR (Committed information rate) is supplied by your SP ...you
and
 him
agree how much you can have( depending on how much you pay)
usually the person setting up your router sets the "BANDWIDTH"
 command
to the CIR+ BR (burst rate) I.E how high you CAN go up to for a
limited
amount of time ..again your service provider has set this for you

Re: Whew! Can you smell that VLan?

2001-03-21 Thread Kelly D Griffin

Right and wrong.

The IS VLAN is its own broadcast domain and the HR VLAN is its own broadcast
domain. By simply hooking up a sniffer to the HR VLAN, you would not see
any of the traffic that only transgresses the IS VLAN. If someone from the
IS VLAN is going to a device on the HR VLAN, then you would be able to see
their traffic.

The Catch

If you have enable access to the switch, you can hook up a sniffer to a port
on the switch and make all broadcast traffic for either VLAN be seen by a
certain port.

Any questions?

We have had a pissing match lately and here's the details. One person
states
that a VLan can not be sniffed because it is on a different subnet. The
other person says it can becuase it's physically on the same switch. I
think
you can to a point. Here's what I mean; let's say we have a 3524 with two
Vlans, VLAN1 (we'll call it InfoSys), and VLAN2 (called HR). If I have a
sniffer running on InfoSys, I should be able to sniff traffic on my subnet
as well as traffic from HR to InfoSys (ie HR employee accessing mail
server
on InfoSys), right? The only difference is that the source MAC address
would
change. I should not be able to sniff traffic local to HR (ie an employee
accessing accounting software) right? What's the rub?

Re: Sample CCNA test question..bogus?

2001-03-15 Thread Kelly D Griffin

If the question were:

Q. Which one of the following is a valid host using the address of
172.16.64.0 /19?

Answer D would be valid.

Q. Which of the following is a valid host using the address of
172.16.0.0/24?

a. 172.16.254.12
b. 172.16.0.255
c. 172.16.0.0
d. 172.16.255.255

What is the answer to this question? When I do design work and send clients
a design that includes the subnets they should route to my campus, I do not
say 172.16.0.0/19 and mean 172.16.64.0/19.

I posted this problem about a year or so ago and we never did find a
resolution to it and I still can't find anything on CCO about it. The
problem is that I can't reverse telnet out of the AUX port on a 2600
router. I have a dial modem attached to it that does function, yet when
I try to RT to it the connection is refused.

 Here is the config:

 line aux 0
  modem InOut
  transport input all
  stopbits 1
  speed 38400
  flowcontrol hardware

Someone suggested adding "no exec", but that had no effect. This exact
config works just fine on any 2500 in our network, but I have yet to get
RT working with a 2600 series router running 12.0 or 12.1.

 Any other ideas?

 Thanks,
 John

This says to route the traffic over S0/0.1 as it is directly connected.
Route the traffic over S0/0.2 if the primary link should become unreachable.
You have to be careful with the administrative distance on the backup route.
If you are running a routing protocol (OSPF, RIP, etc.) you will have to
take into account what the default distances are for these protocols. Keep
in mind that a route that points to an interface is distance 0 and a route

Re: The best place to put the access lists

2001-02-07 Thread Kelly D Griffin

The best place for ACL's is at the access layer. You want to deny or permit
packets the outer-most level you have control of. If you wait for their
packets to get into the core of your network, then you have already
compromised your network's security. If you do it at the router that your
customer connects to, you can deny things like routing protocols and subnets
that need not penetrate your network.

The best solution for security is a firewall. If security is a mission
critical application, a PIX should be used instead of ACL's.

Re: 2511 Problems

I was told by TAC that the boot roms are free if you have a service contract
on the said router. If you did not have a contract, they would gladly sell
you the upgrade kit for $300. Talk to me offline if you would like a set.

Subject: 2511 Problems

 Hi All,

I've got a 2511 that I have had problems with, and I have managed to fix
it.
The unit was having booting problems, and after hours on the phone with
TAC
they concluded that there was hardware problems with the unit.

The 2511 has two SCSI ports, one for ASYNC ports 1-8 another for ASYNC
ports
9-16. The ASYNC ports 9-16 is a daughterboard that sits on top of the
 motherboard.

I decided to pull this daughterboard out, and it worked... woohoo!! =) Now
it is detected as a 2509, which it should be because it now has only 8
ASYNC
 ports.

So now I'm scratching my head, wondering where I could get another
daughterboard for this 2511. It is not under warranty or service contract.

The boot rom on this unit is dead, so I also have to get new boot rom for
it. I've been told that Cisco gives them for free providing I pay for
shipping, but nobody seems to know over there at Cisco.

I wonder if anyone could give me some suggestions

 Thanks

 Albert

Actually, you don't want it to be read/write. In 0x2102 mode, it should read
read only. You will be able to TFTP a new image in this mode.

Re: Routers in my lab

If you are going for the CCIE, I would recommend having a 3600 series so
that you can get your ATM and VoIP practice in. You might think about a Cat
2901 instead of the 5000. It runs the Crescendo OS just like the 5000
series. It is significantly cheaper, as well.

I would keep them all unless you're in acute need of money. Even though
I'm
many frequent flyer miles away from the CCIE, I do believe that you can
not
have to much equipment to practice on.

If it were for the CCNA only, 1,2 or 3 2500's should be plenty.

You might want to get rid of a some of the 2500's and get different
routers
instead, plus a switch or two. You can keep buying stuff from now to
Christmas, the only thing that stops you are the amount of money you can
 afford to spend on this.

If I was a multi-millionaire and for some reason still wanted to study for
these Cisco tests, I would buy every model they have ever made and setup a
 whole house as a lab.

But, I'm not, so I currently only have four 2500's to play with, but
that's
kind of okay for now. I would have liked a Cat5000, but that's a little
too
 heavy for my wallet.

Re: blocking broadcast.com ip addresses

2001-01-05 Thread Kelly D Griffin

The easiest way to block an ip address on your gateway router is to route to
null (i.e. ip route 192.168.1.1 255.255.255.255 Null). You can also compile
an access-list to block out a range of addresses (i.e. deny ip any
192.168.1.0 0.0.0.255).

It is up to you to decide which method is the best. The ACL would be my
preferred method. Easier to maintain than static route statements.

 2509 or 2511
 2513
 2503 or 2524
 2521 or 2523

Alternatively, the last two routers can be:
 2504 or 2525
 2520 or 2522

Routers running 4MB RAM / 8 MB Flash for IOS 12.0.9. I got this info from
 the URL below:
 http://store.yahoo.com/kg2nd/router-cisco-2509.html
(Please let me know if you actually need 16/16MB for the Enterprise
version)

 Token Ring MAUs
 V.35 DTE/DCE Crossover (Back-to-back) Cables
 Ethernet transceivers
Token Ring Card for the Workstation
ISDN Simulator or Patch cables (?)

 Some feedback would be appreciated.

Subject: Timeouts on Ethernet and WAN interface

 Hi,

We have this 3600 router connected to a WAN through a PRI interface an a
LAN
through an ethernet interface. We have recently been experiencing timeouts
on
 these interfaces.

Over noght the timeouts did not appear, just this morning it has started
 again.

 What could be wrong?

Re: Modem Access from Router

2001-01-03 Thread Kelly D Griffin

What model of router is this on? If you are referring to reverse telnet, it
can be done not only from this router, but from a telnet session to this
router. Send more details.

Subject: Modem Access from Router

 Hello friends

I have a modem connected to the AUX port of my router. I am using this
modem
 to dial into the router.

Now I need to access this modem from the router.
What do i need to configure on the router to be able to access the modem
from the router itself. ie to be able to configure the modem using the AT
 command set.
Could someone help me out on this.

 Thanks

 Sam

Re: Frame Relay PVC

2001-01-03 Thread Kelly D Griffin

Here are some statistics from the last year of WAN implementations at my
company.

178 Unique circuit installs
- 123 FR
- 55 point-to-point circuits (T1 or greater)
46 Incomplete installations due to errors
- 13 Extended DEMARC
- 1 Bad serial port on router
- 12 Bad configuration by LEC
- 21 Bad configuration by CLEC
- 2 Operator error

Food for thought. I can give detailed information on this if anyone would
like to hear more.

Subject: RE: Frame Relay PVC

I've experienced these types of symptoms several times and 99% of the time
it really is the telco's fault, it just takes some serious pressure to get
them to put some resources toward fixing the problem.

However, at least once I found that it was a bad extension from the demarc
(NIU) to the csu/dsu. The building we were in had lots of other equipment
at the demarc, and from time to time throughout the day some of that
equipment would generate enough EM noise that it would cause a lot of
errors
on our line and the PVC would go down.

The telco tested and didn't find any problems and even sent a tech who
didn't discover any problems. I later went there myself and re-oriented
some of the cables in relation to other equipment and the problem went
away.

My first and last inclination (not to mention every inclination in
 between)
is to blame the telco. If they've truly done testing on the circuit and
can't find anything, then consider whether you cross multiple carriers
on
that PVC. It may not be your local carrier's issue, which is why they
haven't found anything. If you're on a single carrier, then I would
recommend a redesign of that PVC. It's easy to say there's nothing
wrong
with the configuration of the PVC when you're talking with someone who
doesn't know all the ins and outs of frame switch configuration, but in
 my
experience, most of the carrier techs don't really KNOW their
equipment -
they just have a script they run through to create new PVCs, hence they
 may
not be exactly accurate when they say that everything is fine.

   Hope that helps.

I have a intermittent problem (about a dozen times a day) where a PVC
 goes
from the active to inactive state. It used to happen maybe once a week.
I
have not changed anything on either router. Furthermore, my other PVC's
 are
   unaffected.

I did a debug of the lmi packets and the output is below. My telco says
there is nothing wrong with the physical connection or the
configuration
 of
the PVC. If anyone has an explanation for these events, or even better,
a
solution to fix the damn thing, I'd love to hear it.

   Thanks,

 Hi Gang,

Is it me, or has anyone else had this problem using the Cisco TFTP
 program---

I TFTPed software from my laptop to a switch just fine today.

But then I tried to TFTP IOS code from my laptop to a router today. I got
an error message (from the TFTP program itself), and the program
immediately
closed down. I even rebooted the laptop and this did not help.

Re: Interface backup

2000-12-27 Thread Kelly D Griffin

It depends on how you configure it. If you use Legacy DDR it will be locked
into use as a backup only. If you configure with a DIALER interface, then
it is used on a first-come, first-served basis.

Once you make a BRI interface a backup to say a serial interface, does =
it lock it down so that it is not useable for any other purposes?

 eg:
 interface serial 0
  backup load 60 5
  backup interface bri 0

 Cheers.

Subject: Quick Survey: Con or Aux?

Today I got into a discussion about the appropriate place to connect a
router for remote management of routers. If you plug it into a console
port, you have the ability to reset the router and recover the password.
However, if you get disconnected, you leave a session open, causing a
security problem. Although you can use exec-timeout, it still can make it
difficult to reconnect to it if you lose a connection.

So, I'm curious...what is everyone's opinion on the best place to plug a
modem in for remote management? The console port or the AUX port?
