The MADGE switch will allow it to take place on the LAN side so you don't
have to worry about using your router to filter the traffic.

Right! Which is what I was saying in my last post... The original poster
would either have to plug the TR interface on the Router into a TR interface
on a Switch that also has Ethernet Capabilities, and configure SRB, SRT,
etc., or connect the TR Router to another TR/Ethernet router and let that
router do the translation/media conversion.

It seems that he's got an ethernet network/connection that he wants to hook
to the TR interface on the router. Either way, a simple connector/adapter
isn't going to work, as they are totally difference methods of media access.

RE: Cisco to buy Nortel??? [7:22909]

2001-10-18 Thread NP-BASS LEON

IT'S CALLED THE AMERICAN WAY, WHATEVER YOU CAN DO, IT'S TO YOUR ADVANTAGE TO
DO IT, There isn't any other IT firm out there today in this particular
market that could pull it off, and believe me, there would be a hell of a
lot more layoffs
concerning people who work on Cisco equipment, compared to those that work
on Nortel, so lets just hope that if everyone that works on these devices
were laid off according to popularity, your mortgage isn't dependent on you
supporting Nortel equipment. Because you might be homeless.

Amazing...I don't mean to be haughty or insulting
(really) but all of this seems so clueless:

Why the concept of Cisco buying Nortel is so
laughable. They might be able to pull it off
financially right now, but it would be like Hyundai
buying GM. The problem is that even though Cisco is a
huge player in the Enterprise and service provider
space, in the RBOC, ILEC space they are out of their
element, and are even hated, much less distrusted due
to their efforts to bully the standards organizations,
etc... in the carrier space.

I personally think that the view of cisco is always
skewed by those who see them from the view of the
enterprise, which is small potatoes from the
standpoint of a carrier vendor. Maybe the real message
here is that the distinctions between those two
markets are disappearing, or at least their interests
are merging (can anyone say OE).

I don't mean to "dis" anyone on this list, but I think
the game is changing, perhaps in ways we all don't
understand, but at least the Nortel's of the world are
trying. To say Cisco will buy Nortel is like saying
McDonalds will start seving steak.

If you've perceived my comments that way then I apologize
wholeheartedly. I was in *no way* trying to make light of these recent
events and it actually bothers me that you'd think that. However, I can
easily understand how you might think that so--again--I apologize.

In a strange way, I was attempting to get the types of posts on the
list a little more on-topic. I feel that posts regarding this attack
are fine since they greatly affect us all on a number of levels.
However, I didn't feel it was appropriate to start a religious
discussion on the list. My attempt at humor was an absurd way to
demonstrate that a discussion of God, sin, and consequences of sin on a
list such as this would be fruitless, pointless, and most likely
inflammatory considering the diverse makeup of the list.

Perhaps because religious discussions are one of my "hot buttons" I
wasn't able to restrain myself from making such an absurd post, but
please do not take it in the wrong way. I agree that this list is made
up of quite a few professionals and it's precisely that that makes
religious discussion inappropriate. However, in hindsight I regret
posting that publicly and I'll try to show more restraint in the
future.

Sincerely,
John

I work right around the corner from the Pentagon, When you can hear and
smell, that is indication things are more than close enough. The atmosphere
here is somewhat latent, still in dis-belief and insecure, but wanting an

Well;

I'm sure all the words have already been said, but I tried to refuse to
believe my ears
when I first woke up to news on the radio this morning. Unfortunately, that
feeling of
disbelief was very short-lived since it was all over the media. Although I
don't
personally know anyone from that area, but I feel that innocent lives have
have been
lost, and many others have been affected by that loss for years to come. My
thoughts
and feelings are with those who survived, and the ones who lost their loved
ones. Trust
me, the emotions were felt all day here in Vancouver, BC (Canada). Office
buildings
were shutdown mid-day.

In closing, I just want to say that no matter what the religion, one belongs
to, these
are real human beings taken away from fathers, mothers, brothers, sisters,
sons, and
daughters. That is the issue, period!!

Question: When will the human race learn to resolve their differences in
more peaceful
way???

Hope all is well with those in the middle of this crisis.

copy your access list to say notepad. take out the offending item then copy

Simple question that I'm obviously having a brain fart on.

How to remove an entry from an ACL?

Is there a specific command or technique for removing an entry. In testing
I have noticed that the "no" command infront of the statement will delete
the entire ACL.

I'm sure someone can provide the answer pretty quickly.

Pardon my ingnorance. Kind of blanking out on this for some reason.

Thanks in advance!

Any suggestions?

Totally disagree,

I'm finding that it's not just a vendor specific field, it's
technology, that you focus on, because regardless
of the vendor, there is only so many ways you can implement technology.
Don't just learn the vendor, learn the methodology of the technology that it
supports, and it will make life a lot easier.

EDITING CONDUIT AND STATIC ENTRIES [7:9333]

2001-06-21 Thread NP-BASS LEON

[ The following text is in the "iso-8859-1" character set. ]
[ Your display is set for the "US-ASCII" character set. ]
[ Some characters may be displayed incorrectly. ]

Whenever you are editing conduit and static entries on a PIX, do you need to
cut and paste the entire list.
I notice that the conduit command will allow you to add a single entry, but
is this proper procedure. I'm asking because I have come across the PIX from

conduit permit tcp host 210.110.xx.xx eq [port] host 210.xxx.xx.xx

The conduit permit command restricts access to the port specified. It also
restricts access by foreign IP

If you want to open it the port to any IP (I wouldn't do this)
conduit permit tcp host 210.110.xx.xx eq [port] any

you should search cisco.com for the commands for more info.

can anyone direct me on the best way to edit conduit and static list when
they get up to 150-200 entries

Even better, start using access-list instead of conduit before it's phased
out.

static (inside,outside) 210.110.xx.xx 192.168.xx.xx netmask 255.255.255.255
access-list inbound_list permit tcp host 210.110.xx.xx any eq www
access-group inbound_list in interface outside

On your access-list inbound_list just put whatever protocol and port you
want to replace the tcp and www. access-group only needs to be bound once
per access-list name & then any changes are done to the interface when you
add another to the list.

The new PIX Firewall manuals available for download have step by step
instructions on converting your old conduits to access-list statements.

Hope that helps

RE: Token Ring Question

2001-03-29 Thread NP-BASS LEON

If you are atempting to plug two Token-Ring cables into one MAU, just make
sure both of those interfaces are on the same network (Which really wouldn't
give you much), But just to test this, get two MAU's do not connect them to
any part of your network, place one cable in one MAU and the other cable in
the second MAU, your beacon errors will go away. The reason you are
beaconing, is the first one to initialize is boss, so when you come with
another connection, the MAU has already been taken. Run the test and you
will see, I'm right.

Both routers have the same ring speed?
Verify the cables. Verify the MAU. Divide a problem into smaller parts. Then
test each part. Substitute a questionable item for a known good item. If the
new arrangement now fails the questionable item is defective. Conversely if
the new arrangement works the questionable item is good. etc.

PIX, Static and Conduits

2001-03-23 Thread NP-BASS LEON

I was trying to add a Static and Conduit statement to a PIX ver 5.3(1) and
could not get it to add.
It would add to the PIX, but it was going to the end of the Static list or
the end of the conduit list, and performed as if it was an extended
access-list, The PIX box was not recognizing the entry at all, even after I
syncronized the two by writing to mem and writing to Standby.
Any helpful hints would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

RE: Question regarding DLCI's...

2001-03-23 Thread NP-BASS LEON

I am correct is saying that with this configuration you will have sites
NY=104, Ch=101, SF=103,b Stamford =100 and what does the and=20 represent,
if all the remote sites are to point to Stamford. The statement said that
"assuming all the remote routers will have DLCI 100 pointing them to
Stamford=20 and Stamford would have 4 entries each with the remotes'
respective
> DLCI's?=20 " I thought it would be all remote sites pointing to DLCI 100
and the Hub, Stamford having an entry for each of the remote location, I am
a bit confused with the Stamford=20.
Could someone please clear this up for my understanding.

Thanks in advance.

Subject: RE: Question regarding DLCI's...

Hi all,

The DLCI's are still of local significance as I understand it.

When the company I belong to provide links we might use 17, 18,19 & 20 at
the core site on line C12345. At remote end 1 we would most likely use DCLI
17 as the first instance on each remote site. For example, remote site 1
could be R1 on DLCI 17, remote site 2 could be RG23419 on DCLI. You
could for some reason want to go from remote sites 1 -> 2 so here you could
use R1 DLCI 18 -> RG23419 DCLI 18.

Basically I like to think of it as a physical line from the frame switch to
your site R1 the a channel (permanent in most cases) PVC relates to the
DCLI eg 17.

Once into the frame switch all the rules change as it could pass down a very
different link on a different PVC between switches.

Frome end to end it could look like

C123245 DLCI 20 -> sw S1234 DLCI 25 -> sw S4567 DLCI 50 -> sw R4 DLCI
17.

You as a client would only know about C12345 DLCI 20 and R4 17.

Just a thought I hope helps.

IT WOULD PROBABLY SERVE YOU JUST AS WELL TO FORMAT THE FLASH.

Well, that makes perfect sense! heh heh I won't even bother asking
why they implemented the delete command if it doesn't really do
anything.

Since the 2611 IOS runs from RAM, I'd be okay deleting the entire
flash, right? Geez, I hate doing stuff like that on a production
router. :-) But, that's never really stopped me.

>>> "Richard Gallagher" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> 2/22/01 9:05:24 AM >>>
This command only works on the higher end paltforms - 7200, 7500
etc...

Although the delete command is present there is no way to squeeze the
flash. So
to free up some room you are going to have to erase the flash and start
from
scratch.

Since your pinging from the same router that this IP
resides on the access-list doesn't come into play.
Traffic flowing through that interface will be looked
at against the access-list but not traffic sourced
from the router, unless you set up a local policy
route.

If you have a static route routing traffic destined to
100.200.3.0 to 192.168.3.1 this will cause what your
seeing and NAT could effect it as well.

Hows the NAT configured and what are you permitting to
be NAT'd? If your permitting 100.200.3.x and your
outside NAT pool is 192.168.3.x then this could be the
problem as well.

Need to know more about the config.

SETTING UP DES ENCRYPTION

2001-01-24 Thread NP-BASS LEON

I am setting up 2 Cisco 3620's with a VPN using 3DES encryption with a
DES/3DES VPN Encryption module.
Never really set up this device in a router, but defintely not with VPN.
I know this module increases performance a great deal comparred to the
software solution.
But I need some direction or helpful hits to configure this device.

Subject: OSPF virtual link question

Consider the above OSPF network. You have configured a virtual path to
connect Area 3 with Area 0. What is your assessment of this network?

 1. The network will work. However, you must configure a second
virtual link through router B to ensure there are no routing loops.

2. The network will not work. Area 3 must be directly connected to
Area 0.

3.The network will work properly with no redundant hops.

4.network will work. However, it contains sub-optimal routing as
packets from router D to router C must transit router A

5.network will not work. A routing loop exists as packets destined
for router C from router D must pass through router C twice.

Thanks in advance.

MK

THIS IS A CISCO STUDY GROUP

2000-12-15 Thread NP-BASS LEON

I have used this study group for a while now and I think someone needs to
say this, this study group is called a CISCO study group, NOT EXTREME, NOT
JUNIPER. NOT FOUNDRY or any other vendor you can think of, but CISCO, LET US
NOT FORGET THIS "RIF" Reading is fundamental. If you are going to make a
comparison because of compatibility issues fine, but don't waste the time of
individuals that are trying to learn with your opinions about every other
router and switch in the world, FRANKLY WHO CARES. Now if you want to
discuss issues you have had with these devices being and there
interoperability then fine, inform us, but degrading or using air time to be
critical of Cisco, it's engineers or even it's support, then open up your
own CHAT ROOM and do that on your own TIME. Not the time of individuals who
want to advance and learn. I say this because in the past month, all I see
and read is Cisco is in trouble because of this, Cisco isn't doing that,
Cisco better do this, If you are fed up with Cisco and want to take your
money other places then do it, I enjoy this sight for the technical
knowledge that it provides, for individuals on this sight to continue to
read negative statements, enforces the opposite of what this site is trying
to build, it's obvious some of us have nothing better to do than put down
Cisco don't have a lot of equitable knowledge to share anyway. Just my 2
cents. Reply if you like, but it will just once again make my point, provide
something knowledgable, not your opinion, This is not a PHILOSOPHY study, we
only need your Cisco experience, not what you think Cisco should, could or
would do, Whatever they don't do, get it else where, and share that, but
keep the PHILOSOPHICAL APPROACH TO YOURSELVES.

Never used "NO IP REDIRECTS", BUT I have used "NO IP DIRECTED-BROADCAST"
to prevent spoofing attacks to your network, but maybe I can learn a little

Sorry about the IPX beconing, I meant the Token_Ring network would beacon.
I have gotten this to work on a Madge Ringswitch however...

IPX can't beacon!!! &;-) I don't know how we managed to move up to the
network layer anyway. The question was "Can you configure multiple rings on
a single MAU?"

The answer is no. A MAU is a physical-layer relay. It's like an Ethernet
hub. Two rings requires at least a bridge or switch.

To be honest, I don't know what would actually happen if you plugged two
2500s into the same MAU and assigned two different ring numbers. I can't
think of anything in the Token Ring protocols that addresses this problem.
But I do know that it would be illogical, illegal, and downright ugly, kind
of like what's going on in Florida. &;-)

The initial question did not mention secondary addresses. They simply stated
that they wanted to place TWO seperate routers, with TWO different IP
subnets. David,
If you could explain how you configured that please let me in on it
Thanks in advance.

I have seen two ip ranges running on a single IBM 8228 mau (you can't get
much dumber than that), and I have seen two IP ranges running on a single
dumb ethernet hub. The secondary address command allows you to do that with
one interface. As far as IPX, I'm not as familiar with that but I don't see
why it would be different.

What you will see if you do a debug is lots of messages about things arping
on the wrong subnet, but things will work.

The original post said multiple rings, which is maybe where I'm going wrong
with regard to bridging. But if you have two router interfaces with
different network addresses and put them into different bridge groups why
would that be a problem.

two router interfaces with two different IP or IPX addresses on the same

RE: token ring question

2000-11-09 Thread NP-BASS LEON

NOT IN THIS LIFE TIME
Even if you plug two 2500 into the same MAU, the MAU cannot be divided, it's
basically too dumb. Even if you don't use IP, the MAU will see both ring
addresses on the same segment, which will create a problem.

You will have to have a Smart Device, that is the only way you will get away
with plugging two routers into the same TokenRing device. Madge makes one,
but it's a switch not a MAU, a SmartRing Switch to be exact.
