RE: How to verify the CIR from my router?

2000-11-08 Thread Odell, Jeff

show frame-relay map should show you the CIR. I will paste the output of
one of my routers:

Router-R1#sh fra map
Serial0.1 (up): point-to-point dlci, dlci 500(0x1F4,0x7C40), broadcast, BW =
256000 status defined, active
Serial0.3 (up): point-to-point dlci, dlci 901(0x385,0xE050), broadcast, BW =
768000 status defined, active

This is a T-1 with two PVC's defined. One is a 256K cir and the other is a
768 CIR. The BW= shows the CIR.

MGS password recovery

2000-10-15 Thread Odell, Jeff

Anyone want to jump into their "way-back" machine and help me figure out how
to perform password recovery on a MGS? I have two of them with unknown

don't list anything as old as a MGS. I also searched the archives but did
not find an answer.

I will continue digging through CCO. I am hoping to get two cheap but

Well, persistance pays! :') About 30 minutes after I sent this plea for

RE: Boson test for BCRAN???

2000-08-03 Thread Odell, Jeff

The Boson tests are a great tool for evaluating if you are ready to take the
BCRAN test. They are not a substitute for learning the material. Pick up a
book and study. When you think you are ready, spend $30 for the Boson test.
If you score well, take the real thing, if not, study more to help on your
weak areas.

I have not been disappointed with any of the Boson tests so far. I have
used then as part of my preparation for CCNA, CCDA, BCRAN and CIT. I will
keep using them as I feel they are a good tool for my style of preparation.

What might be some other causes of these errors? This LAN is experiencing

RE: ISDN interface problem

2000-07-24 Thread Odell, Jeff

When an interface is configured as a backup, you can not use it for anything
else. What you could do in this case is put the BRI interface into a dialer
group. Configure the dialer group as the backup interface. You can then
use the BRI interface while the main link is active.

I also seem to remember from my studies awhile back, that you have to reboot
the router when changing the ISDN switch type to make the change take
effect. Something like you'll see the change in the config, but the router
won't recognize it until the reboot. Have you tried that?It rather
resembles a Microsoft product in this regard!  :-}

Maybe posting a "show config" would help determine why BRI0/0 is in standby
mode.

BTW Carrier Transitions are incremented each time your "call" changes state.
For example, when an active call gets disconnected (from timeout, bad
hardware, etc.), that activity will increment the Carrier Transition count
by one. If you have DDR/BOD setup, this is a pretty typical thing. If not,
then you either need to make a config change or you might have bad hardware
somewhere in the line.

RE: HSRP and consecutive addressing

2000-07-24 Thread Odell, Jeff

AFAIK, the addresses can be anything from the same network. I traditionally
use .1 as the virtual address, and .2 and .3 as the addresses of the devices
running HSRP. Since you configure each device to run HSRP and tell both
the standby IP address I don't see why the addresses you have available will
not work.

If the HSRP functionality is being added to an existing production network,
you might consider using the current client default gateway as the virtual
address. That way you don't need to visit all the clients to see which
one's are hard coded versus DHCP.

Subject: HSRP and consecutive addressing

Well, this didn't post the first time, so I'll try again.

When implementing HSRP with IP addressing, do the addresses need to be
consecutive? Every sample I've seen lists 10.0.0.1 and 10.0.0.2 (or some
variant) as the router addy's and 10.0.0.3 as the virtual address.

In the real world, however, where HSRP is an afterthought and not planned,
the people who put in static addresses and default gateways don't leave 3 ip

addresses in a block to use. (Obviously they'll have to be the same subnet,

of course) - and they want the old ip addresses on a router to be new the
virtual addy's now -

So could I use 10.0.0.5 and 10.0.0.18 with a virtual addy of 10.0.0.144?
(assuming 255.255.255.0 subnetmask, of course)

No useful info on CCO, so any advice would be appreciated.

RE: High availability design with FR, how?

2000-07-10 Thread Odell, Jeff

John,

Depending on your bandwidth needs you might want to consider ISDN. My
company uses BRI ISDN to back up each frame relay connection. Fairly
inexpensive and with a few lines in your router config, can automatically
come up when the frame relay goes down. I would recommend a 800 series
router for relatively low traffic sites (I use them for small offices of up
to 30 people) to back up a 2600 running the frame connection.

All in all, it is a relatively cheap and functional solution.

If you share some more info like your bandwidth requirements, etc. I am sure
others will chime in with other recommendations.

Hi All...

I have a mandate from on high that all of our routers now have HSRP support.
Not a problem on the LAN side, and I have worked out the point to point line
issues by using channelized lines and creating two serial lines. But the
frame relay (FR) is killing me!

So far the only solution seems to be with the telco providing a second FR
host line that in the event of failure we call a computer at their end and
dial a few numbers and the PVCs are moved to the secondary FR host line.
Needless to say doesn't sound too hot to me, as it requires that everything
work just right to get a reasonable failover, and this may not be in a
timely manner.

Anyone have any thoughts?

RE: ISDN Dialer Profile Not Working

2000-06-28 Thread Odell, Jeff

A Cisco TAC engineer told me that the SPID1 not valid, SPID2 not valid info
in the Show ISDN Stat is a "cosmetic bug". As long as you have the two
entries showing state=Multiple_Frame_Established, the SPIDs are valid. I
experienced this bug in versions 12.0.5T and 12.0.7T on a 2600 router. It
appeared to be fixed in 12.1.1. I am still working with the TAC to get past
some other issues so I am not completely confident that this is purely a
cosmetic bug. I will let you know if I find anything interesting.

Without analyzing your config deeply, the "spid1 NOT valid" and "spid2 NOT

I'm surprised that any config worked, but since your configs here are
sanitized, can't tell if the spids in the working config are the same as in

Subject: ISDN Dialer Profile Not Working

 Hi Everyone,

First time placing a post, I hope someday to share and
contribute to the group like all of you.

Recently, I had a ISDN install, the central site router consisted of two
BRI interfaces. Each BRI to be connected to a remote site. My first task
was to get BRI0 up and running to the remote location. BRI1 to be done at
a
 later date.

I configured the router using dialer profiles, however, I was not able to
get it to work. When doing the "show isdn status" , layer 2 status
echoed:

 Layer 2 Status:
 TEI = 67, Ces = 1, SAPI = 0, State = MULTIPLE_FRAME_ESTABLISHED
 TEI = 69, Ces = 2, SAPI = 0, State = MULTIPLE_FRAME_ESTABLISHED
 TEI 67, ces = 1, state = 8(established)
 spid1 configured, spid1 sent, spid1 NOT valid
 TEI 69, ces = 2, state = 8(established)
 spid2 configured, spid2 sent, spid2 NOT valid

As normal, I had to get this link up and functioning ASAP. After looking
over the configuration (the pressure didn't help), I decided to configure
the router not using dialer profiles. Using this configuration(NO dialer
profiles) I was able to get the ISDN connection to the remote site up and
 running instantly.

I am stumped as to why my dialer profile configuration did not work.

I would like to use dialer profile in the future and I really would like
to
find out whats wrong with my configuration (with the groups help). The
following is the dialer profile configuration followed by my currently
working configuration. Does anyone one see something I don't. Thanks in
 Advance.

RE: Logon to NT Server?

2000-06-26 Thread Odell, Jeff

You either need to enable WINS on the NT server or
setup a LMHOSTS file to tell the clients on LAN 2 where to find a domain
controller. I will leave it up to you to find information on setting up
WINS or LMHOSTS files.

I would also recommend that you only send a message
once to the list. You sent this twice within a couple hours. That is
a sure way to annoy those who otherwise might help
you.

Server?

  Hi all,
I have 2 LAN connect together over leased line.
In LAN 1I using CISCO Router 2611 and in LAN 2 using CISCO Router 805.
My IOS software have only TCP/IP option. Now in LAN 2I have Windows NT
Server and when I logon to to this Server fromW95 client in LAN 1 I
alway see the message: "There are no domain to validate your username and
password..." but I can ping from client to this Server and I can find this
server via IP Address. When I logonto this server from client in LAN 1
and use same username it work normaly. So how can I solve this problem? may I
need to add some configuration to my router? Please help me!

  Thanks alot.

Show isdn status

This will show you something like:

Austin-R2#sho isdn stat
The current ISDN Switchtype = basic-ni1
ISDN BRI0 interface
Layer 1 Status:
ACTIVE
Layer 2 Status:
TEI = 72, State = MULTIPLE_FRAME_ESTABLISHED
TEI = 81, State = MULTIPLE_FRAME_ESTABLISHED
Layer 3 Status:
No Active Layer 3 Call(s)
Activated dsl 0 CCBs = 0
Total Allocated ISDN CCBs = 0
Austin-R2#

The layer 1 entry shows whether you are connected to the ISDN line. You can
also check your layer two and three status.

Hello,

Is there a way to verify that a remote site has there isdn plugged in to
the wall. A sh controllers s 0 would verify that a cable is plugged in,
but I can't tell from a sh controllers bri 0, or I don't know what to look
for. I'd like to get away from having to contact the site to verify that
it is plugged in. If anyone can tell me what to look for in a sh
controllers or has another way I would greatly appreciate it.

Thanks in advance,

Jeff

RE: BCRAN Command List

2000-05-17 Thread Odell, Jeff

In the live BCRAN test, there is an exhibit button on all the fill in the
blank questions. You must re-type the command (no cut and paste that I
could find) into the answer field.

Hi All.

In the beta exam for remote access we were given a long list of commands to
choose from. Does anyone know if this is the case for the live exam?
Thanks!
