There used to be a key value called 'shared secret' that you had to configure on the ACE server as well as the 'requesting' device (and unfortuanately it was plain text). I haven't played with an ACE server for about 5yrs so that may have changed. 2501 and 2503 Lab [7:65942]
Just got a small Lab fo home 2 x 2501 and a 2503 here's what I really need to know. As the MCNS is fo router security mainly will this be OK. Will these run BGP, OSPF, ISIS IPSec/DES/3DES. Basically what are the limitations. They all have V12 IOS. Seems like an easy question but I dont wanna start trying something I cant do. Also if I want to look at the CSSP at a later date are 2 PIX 501's enough. Any advice on additions to my Lab will be appreciated. RE: dialer remote name/ppp chap hostname [7:59224]
Keith, Its to do with the order in which the call is handled. The dialer-remote name is what allows the incomming call to be bound to the dialer. Otherwise IOS has no way of knowing which dialer the call is for. The call must authenticate first, then get the remote name from chap, then lookup the dialer. No dialer remote name, no call binding. LCP will complete, but you will get no IPCP nego because the call has not bound to an IP enabled Dialer. PPP chap host is only used as an outgoing alternative hostname if the device at the other end is not a cisco router, or there is some other reason why you do not want to identify your router with its real hostname. Get rid of the ppp chap hostname commands put the dialer remote names back in, make sure the local prompt matches the remote user and remote dialer remote statement each way and it will work. Re: OSPF Hub and Spoke [7:9268]
As far as I can see, both scenarios would work, as long as you have an area 0 defined somewhere. If you put the links into individual area, then you would at least have to have area 0 on the ethernet or a loopback on the hub router. A router does not implicitly assume the role of backbone router through having multiple areas connected unless one of them is area zero. If for example you had one router connected to area 1 and area 2, the router would maintain a database for both areas, but there would be no type 3 LSA's or inter area routes in either database. So other area 1 routers , for instance, would have no knowledge of area 2 routes and vice-versa. By definition, all inter-area routes must go via the backbone. No backbone, no inter area routes. I have been tripped up by this in the lab. While the above would work, it would probably not be advisable as you have one router maintaining 5 link state databases. I agree with the others that the better solution (unless your hub router is madly powerfull in comparison to the spokes) is to extend area 0 across the wan links. As for extending area 0 out onto the spoke ethernets, you can extend area 0 as far as you like, only being limited by the number of participating routers in an area, I forget the numbers. Cat3500xl multi vlan config question
Hey, First off, I'm not too familiar with Cisco 3500 xl switches. I configured a switch with 3 VLANs, I assigned an IP address to each VLAN, I also added the necessary ports in each VLAN. After everything is said and done the 3rd VLAN (servers) didn't have connectivity to the other VLANs. I couldn't find a command to allow me to assign a default route to each VLAN. Re: Which one is correct?
I am assuming you have two PVCs at each branch office for either a doubly-large CIR, or because you have two physical interfaces. either way, unless some weird frame-switching is being done, and im not sure if this is possible ( though it prolly is ) each branch office pvc is going to require a corresponding pvc at the CO. you will need to use six frame-relay map commands on the point-to-multipoint at the CO. This is what I have to work with. I have 2 T1, each going into s0 and s1. What can I do to enable redundancy? If the T1 in s0 fails , s1 will automatically kick in and takeover. Also , what monitoring software do any of you use to monitor your networks. specifically for network outages? Maybe you don't have much telnet but when I tried clear xlate years ago for the first time my users certainly let me know I can't do it again. I now do my reloads or clears late at night over my DSL connection. pete ___ UPDATED Posting Guidelines: http://www.groupstudy.com/list/guide.html FAQ, list archives, and subscription info: http://www.groupstudy.com Report misconduct and Nondisclosure violations to [EMAIL PROTECTED]

You can use clear xlate to clear out the xlate connections but then of course you are knocking people off so you might as well reboot. pete ___ UPDATED Posting Guidelines: http://www.groupstudy.com/list/guide.html FAQ, list archives, and subscription info: http://www.groupstudy.com Report misconduct and Nondisclosure violations to [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Everytime I tried this, the switch needs to >be rebooted. I haven't figured out why yet. also remember that the the port that you are spanning to (the one with the snffer) cannot be used as a regular network port anymore. Spanning disables that ability and it can only be used to watch the spanned packets. So you can't test for things on the sniffer PC. pete > ___ UPDATED Posting Guidelines: http://www.groupstudy.com/list/guide.html FAQ, list archives, and subscription info: http://www.groupstudy.com Report misconduct and Nondisclosure violations to [EMAIL PROTECTED]
