RE: BCMSN EXAM [7:1912]
The Boson Switching sucked! It was no where close to the actual exam, if I was a cram and exam type I would have failed the Switching exam just using the Boson test exam. I do not use the Boson exams for any Cisco tests anymore. -Original Message- From: Circusnuts [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Wednesday, April 25, 2001 3:23 PM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: BCMSN EXAM [7:1912] Boson't are much harder than the real thing. Reverse DNS
Group, Question, if you are maintaining the DNS zones for your domains, do you need reverse zones with entries for each of your domains the Internet needs to get to? Let's say your ISP is providing secondary DNS for you, will they host reverse DNS for you? or do you still need to provide for reverse DNS regardless? RE: Spanning Tree Question - Root Port Selection
I think one of the factors is the port priority. Three factors that influence Root bridge port selection are: port cost, path to the root, and port priority. I think the only one you can change is port priority. This can be set for different values depending on the type of switch you are running. -Original Message- From: Miller, Nathan - BSC [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Tuesday, February 06, 2001 9:09 AM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Spanning Tree Question - Root Port Selection I have been looking for a while for further documentation of the process by which a switch selects its root port. Most of the books that I have searched for this information say something similar to the following quote from a CCO page: "A bridge's root port is the port through which the root bridge can be reached with the least aggregate path cost, a value that is called the root path cost." My problem is that they all seem to stop there. My question is this. If the root path cost is the same on multiple switch ports, how does STA determine which is the root port? Does it follow the same course as it would when selecting a designated port (root bridge, root path cost, sender ID, sender port). Many thanks for your thoughts. RE: about routing in NT server
Yes, You need to put on ONE gateway on the NT Server, and that is your external network. You need to put "route add" statements on the NT Server to get back to your internal. Make sure you do not have but one default gateway, this is important as NT will not know which interface to send packets out if it has multiple. I have the same setup in my office. RE: CCDA Exam
I passed the CCDA on Friday of last week. It was a very hard exam due to the case studies and the scale of topics tested. I did not write everything down as I was told to do, so I made it even more diffcult for myself. I passed, but was not happy with my score. I used the DCN from Cisco Press and the Exam Cram book. This exam is NOT like the CCNA, I had VAX, SNA, AppleTalk, IPX, IP and a host of other questions. I recommend you KNOW the topics Cisco lists on their website for the CCDA, in one way or another they are tested. I purchased Test #1 for the CCDA from Boson and found it provided very little help on the range of test questions and subjects covered by the actual exam. Having passed the MCSE 4.0 exams and the CCNA, I can tell you that this exam requires actual experience, not just a good memory. It was the hardest test I have take so far, and until this point I had given that honor to the Exchange 5.5 exam. RE: cisco 3524 XL EN problem
You may need to enable portfast access. This will allow the computer to transmit data immediately and the switch will learn the MAC address at a later time. It will however broadcast data coming to your port on all ports it does not know the MAC address for until it learns your computer's MAC address. -Original Message- From: atif [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Monday, December 11, 2000 9:14 AM To: cisco group study Subject: cisco 3524 XL EN problem Importance: High i have installed a cisco 3524 xl en switch, i am facing a weird kind of = problem i hope u guys will help me solve this problem. the problem is that when a pc is connecte to switch for the 1st time it = takes about 4 to 5 minutes for the switch to communicate with the = machine. The led on both sides shows green light even when its not = communicationg and the ping request is timed out. then after that it takes about 1 minute for computer to see the switch = if we take the connecter out of the switch and inserts again. now todays it happened that after the weekend when computers were = started some were communicating and many were not and all leds were = showing green lights and after one hour or so every thing was = normalized. i havent seen this sort of problem before, this switch at the moment is = running at default configuration and connected to a router to a vsat = link. i havent assigned ip add info so far , can this be a problem( i dont = think so).=20 can any body figure it out what is the problem, is something wrong with cabling, switch or NIC. atif _ FAQ, list archives, and subscription info: http://www.groupstudy.com/list/cisco.html Report misconduct and Nondisclosure violations to [EMAIL PROTECTED] _ FAQ, list archives, and subscription info: http://www.groupstudy.com/list/cisco.html Report misconduct and Nondisclosure violations to [EMAIL PROTECTED]
VLANs
Group, I have a Cisco 3548 XL with two VLANs on it (VLAN 1 and VLAN2). Some of the ports on the switch are set to multaccess ports for access to both VLANs. This setup works fine for about a day and then the computers on these multaccess VLAN ports can not talk with the main VLAN1, but can talk to VLAN2. After about a week, everytime a computer reboots, it can not login to the domain because the domain controllers are on VLAN1. If I reset the VLAN ports, everything is fine. Any ideas? RE: auto-negotiate not reliable
That is correct. The cards and the switch will continue to "negotiate" for every tranmission. You need to change one of them to a certain speed. They are both trying to figure out which speed to run at. If you make one run at a certain speed, this problem will go away. I always set the NIC to a certain speed 10 or 100. -Original Message- From: Healis, Jim [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Monday, September 11, 2000 12:54 PM To: 'Doug Laing'; [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: RE: auto-negotiate not reliable I have seen problems like this with certain NIC cards, in particular my experience has been poor with 3Com PC Cards. Also, auto-negotiation seems to be problematic between Sun machines and Cisco equipment. The best I can tell is when both sides are set to "auto" they never are able to decide on one setting or the other and eventually fail due to the numerous errors on the interface that accrue while trying to negotiate. I have always played with the settings on the switch port until I see no errors. IP Routes
Group, I have a company(A) that is currently connected to the Internet through a 256K frame, it is sharing IPs with another company(C) x.x.x.x/25 on a different router. I have connected this site to a sister company(B) via fiber and want to disconnect the 256K frame. I want to have all traffic use the sister company(B)'s connection, which has a T-1 connection back to our corporate router. The Internet connection from our corporate router is a T-3. The IP Addresses for both company(A) and company(C) are public addresses. Company(A) does not currently connect to our corporate router. Company(C) connects to our corporate Internet router and goes out to the Internet that way. Company(A) will now connect to our corporate router via Company(B), which currently connects to our corporate router for Internet access. The problem comes in with the corporate router which is announcing IP addresses of company(C). How do you announce routes for the same IP Address block (I need the corporate router to announce both Company(A) and Company(C), the IP address is split x.x.x.x/25), but to different router interfaces? We run all static routes (don't ask me, I have begged to change) to the Internet and internally. ___ UPDATED Posting Guidelines: http://www.groupstudy.com/list/guide.html FAQ, list archives, and subscription info: http://www.groupstudy.com Report misconduct and Nondisclosure violations to [EMAIL PROTECTED]
