Yes, I have seen this on 1720, I agree with you that you cant make it boot the bootstrap ios by using register value as 0x101 or 0x2101, however I didnt pursue it further, since it wasnt crucial for me. I guess it must be somewhere on CCO. RE: Cannot boot from bootstrap eventhout configured wi [7:28808]
I think I found an answer, basically only a few of the routers are having the RXBOOT image on them. yes, 2500, 3000, 4000 (i know for sure that 5400 has it) and others... but nowhere in the list did i find 17xx or 36xx etc. So its safe to assume that they dont have the rxboot image. Remove the cards out of Slot 3 Slot 4 and give it a try. and what terminal emulation prog. are u using, the break key (usually ctrl+break) has to be pressed within the first 60 secs, when its booting. Re: DDR works but doesn't pass packets [7:28605]
I seem to think its a route issue. IF u see on the first router, you have a default pointing outside, fine. But on the second one you have a router to 192.168.100.x now, when u ping from remote router, it will use the ip address of the BRI as the source and there doesnt seem to be a return path on the Central Site router. CCIE study partner in Sydney [7:28797]
I have heard from most/all of the CCIE's / wannabes that a study partner is an absolute essential component in passing the LAB. Anyway, as the subject says, I am looking for a study partner in Sydney, who has finished his written and is scheduled to go for lab in the next 5-6 months. (or sooner). preferably working in a telco/ISP environment. Pl. email me [EMAIL PROTECTED] and we can exchange phone nos / ICQ details. passed CCIE written (longish) [7:28614]
I just passed my qualification test with an 83. It was not an easy test, considering the topics covered. However, I must admit that nothing on the test was beyond the blue print (from CCO). I must admit that being a CCNP is definitely an advantage when one goes for this test, the coverage is different, since more concentration is on theoritical topics, desktop protocols of course token ring SRB/DLSW/RSRB/etc. bridging, rather than the actual routing protocols. I would attempt to suggest a path that one may take (books etc.) while preparing for this test. This will apply mostly to CCNP/DP's one with experience (NP/DP level). Read : 1. Internetworking TEch. overview (CCO) this is an absolute must, however not many who have passed the test seem to refer to this. It certainly has no commands kinda info, but packet types, frame types, layers etc. are plentiful, and these are tested. 2. Caslow : I have mixed responses about caslow, no doubt it is a very good book, no doubt I couldnt have studied some of the topics without it, no doubt that it has a wealth of concentrated info, however one can bypass it. It is replaceable. 3. Read chapter on ATM LANE from LAN switching book by Kennedy Clark (Cisco Press). Its the best explanation one can get. 4. If a CCNP, read all the 4 books, read DLSW + RSRB + SRB papers from CCO. 5. Know the boot sequence the boot register in out. 6. Lou Rossi's Token Ring Paper 7. Dennis Laganiere's RIF examples (good examples) 8. CCO Blue print(probably the most imp. ), I used to go back and forth forming my own Q's about a particular topic. One can replace Caslow (for written, its an absolute must for LAB) by referring to all the above mentioned material. I would recommend taking Written almost immediately after CCNP, while the material is still fresh. And lastly, the most important is BOSON tests, especially 2 3, test 3 has now about 400Q's and that really tests most of the stuff. Experience with actual hardware is important, however I would think that Cisco doesnt rely on actual experience with hardware for this test atleast (NP/DP tests albeit do rely on experience) I would like to thank everyone on this group. now enroute to LAB, and also being part of the exclusive LAB study group (on groupstudy, where else :) Nick Shah Network Engr. RE: Dialer keyword in Snapshot Server cmd [7:28557]
This keyword is applied on both server client, but it works on Clients only. It is used in conjuntion with dialer map snapshot command, which directs the string to dial etc. From what I understand its just one of the Cisco things, whereby you also have to put in the dialer keyword (as in Snapshot server 5 dialer) on the server end, but without the matching dialer map snapshot command (and also due to server keyword) it never dials out and its also not meant to dial out. hth Nick Shah Message Posted at: http://www.groupstudy.com/form/read.php?f=7i=28574t=28557 -- FAQ, list archives, and subscription info: http://www.groupstudy.com/list/cisco.html Report misconduct and Nondisclosure violations to [EMAIL PROTECTED]

RE: CCIE Books [7:28383]
If your goal is to prepare for CCIE Qualification (written) my recommendation is : 1. Internetworking Tech. Overview (CCO) 2. Caslow (good for lab + written) 3. Jeff Doyle (Volume I) 4. Try either Halabi for BGP or CCO Get a few Boson's (try no. 3, it has about 400 Q's). and you should be fine. btw, I am assuming you are already a ccnp or atleast closer. hth Nick Message Posted at: http://www.groupstudy.com/form/read.php?f=7i=28498t=28383 -- FAQ, list archives, and subscription info: http://www.groupstudy.com/list/cisco.html Report misconduct and Nondisclosure violations to [EMAIL PROTECTED]
RE: Boson Practice Tests -- Cheating?? [7:28318]
Boson Practice exams are the result of very hard work on part of their authors. Come on, say for example you read a chapter out of Caslow, and prepare a set of 20 Q's, I bet you will see atleast a couple of them on the actual test maybe differently worded. True, that the work that has gone into preparing the Boson test is so much, that they have started to come closer (not same) to the real test, but once again, as has been oft mentioned just using the Boson is NOT going to help anyone. You can use them to evaluate yourself, test yourself even test your recollection skills, but I really doubt if you can memorise those Q's go to the test and pass. I am in a position to say all this because I have got my certs after studying hard, and then testing myself with the Bosons (or earlier it was Transcender during MCSE 4.0). Take for example the excellent test No. 3 by Dennis Langaniere, it contains about 400 Q's, covering every subject. Its hard to prepare 400 Q's and then expect none of them to appear on the Cisco Test, I mean, these guys (the Boson test Authors) have read every imaginable book and prepared these Q's, where does Cisco get the Q's from, from the same Cisco press books (or CCO). Cisco has to follow the Blue print and same as these guys are doing, so if they are turning up such excellent material, maybe its time for Cisco to change things on their end a bit. Say for eg. how many Q's can you frame out of a blueprint subject called Router Password Recovery, 5 or maybe 6, how many options are possible, so if these authors cover all the options, and one of them is bound to appear on the actual test, same thing goes for every subject of the blueprint. Actually, I am using these tests in much positive manner, if I dont understand one word of a particular Q's I would go back to my books/CCO. Any option, even if not applicable to the context of a Q's, if I cant figure it out, I go back to books/CCO. In that process I tend to learn a lot. And the best part is that along with the answers, the authors give the actual url or book extract from which the Q is taken, which in itself is a great help. ps. I am NOT related to any of the Boson authors, nor do I have any vested interests. Nick S. RE: Frame Relay/ISDN Question [7:27386]
Use Dialer watch, which basically monitors a dynamically learned route (eigrp/igrp) and if for the route disappears it activates the backup link. Since it is not reliant on an interface status (which could be reported as up), it would work in your case. The other option is to use dialer profile, which will free up the BRI to be used by floating static. As with all the questions, the answer would depend on ur network scenario, but in most cases the first option is applicable. hth Nick Message Posted at: http://www.groupstudy.com/form/read.php?f=7i=27514t=27386 -- FAQ, list archives, and subscription info: http://www.groupstudy.com/list/cisco.html Report misconduct and Nondisclosure violations to [EMAIL PROTECTED]
RE: Suggestions welcome [7:27378]
Yep, the basic principle is : a VLAN is one subnet. and thats the reason there is a limitation of 254 odd hosts in one VLAN (note : this is not a theoritical limitation, but a practical one). RE: problem in router config ? [7:27288]
Well, the trouble that you are seeing is prolly caused when say for example you bring a SErial interface down on one end, but the switch(carrier network) reports the link as being up to the serial interface on the other end, so it doesnt switch to ISDN. I have seen this issue with particulary ATM circuits, wherein both the ends are isolated by switch(Carrier network) and the status is independent of either ends. The key is to use dialer watch and a dynamic routing protocol (pref. eigrp), which basically tracks the status of a route in the routing table, absence of which triggers a back up interface. So it doesnt rely on interface status. The bad news is that yes, there are a couple of Q's on 700's in BCRAN, but the good news is that they are fairly basic ones, and on the lines of : Routers that can be used for a SOHO etc, or which of the following router has a non-IOS like etc. MAybe one Q on profile, but definitely not in the detail as its covered in the book. RE: Cannot add dialer map statement [7:27078]
By the looks of it, this router (this dialer profile) is dialled into some destination, in which case you will have to drop the channel/disconnect and only then will it allow you to add the dialer map, and thats what it may mean by dynamic dialer exists. Jenny's option will basically achieve the same thing, if you reload the router without the dialer map statement, it wouldnt dial automatically upon reboot, and you can safely add the new dialer map.
