Has anyone taken the 5 day training class put out by Juniper? I want to
make sure it is worth the money since I will be spending my own money to
attend it.

Is it worth the money? Does it cover enough to pass the JNCIS? I am
currently a CCNP+Security that has passed the CCIE written and in the
process of studying for my Lab exam.

Any opinions, suggestions, Etc

Thank You,

Eric Gunn

RE: support 2.0 (and new ccnp)

2000-06-25 Thread Tom Thomas

As a matter of fact Phil I took this morning as part of my Quality check
process for the CIT Course Companion book (Yes its a plug) and here is the
URL (watch the wrap).

http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0072124830/o/qid%3D958521186/sr%3D2-1

I used the test engine and questions to identify weak areas in my knowledge
and read selectively from the book as required. When I was passing the
practice tests (concepts used in them were excellent) with scores in the
800's I went to take the test and PASSED So now I can add CCNP to my
business card!

Here is my suggestion regarding the test. It is 61 questions and as you know
the cisco tests now have an ever changing passing score so the required
score will be different for you. But mine was on the low side in my opinion.
As usual the Cisco objectives are an excellent guidleline on what you can

I found that the breadth of topics covered was rather broad and when a
question was asked it was very specific. They had the typical type of
questions; matching, drag-n-drop, figures, and fill in the blank. Something
that caught my eye was that the fill in the blanks specified 'no
abberviations' allowed in the question.

Overall a fair test that did not seem to be plagued with errors like many
have experienced in the past.

Tom,

I know about the powercycle thing: that is why I suggest hot glue "seals"
on the powercords and the power switch: you can peel it off, but it will be
very obvious that a "power failure" did not happen. (Y'all can stop
laffing!) I got the idea from the olden days when those old guys would melt
wax on an envelop, and stamp it with their seal. If the messenger opened it
during delivery, it was obvious.

The hot glue would not damage any components, and can be easily removed. I
thought it was better than attaching one of those exploding dye canisters
that the banks use...

Just a thought...

I don't think you folks understand the concept of using the config-register
to bypass the routers config at startup (commonly used for password
recovery) when you have physical access to the rotuers power switch. The
presence of a UPS is irrelevant since by a simple power cycle and break key
you can get to enable mode then copy the startup config into the running
config and modify anything you like. So all these ideas of ACLs, TACACS,
RADIUS, Passwords on the console are completely and utterly useless. If I so
wanted I could delete any of them once I am in via the console port or have
my own config that I paste in that activates routing so I can poke around
the network.

Please send me a URL for the $100 uninteruptable power supply, thanks.

Nabil,

I did not bother to backtrack your message, and I am giving you the
benefit of the doubt; however, your message has a distinct smell of
salmon about it. Either that, or my paranoid sense is tingling
(apologies to Spider Man).

First: Get an UPS!

Preferably one that you can lock. Take come hot glue, and glue the
power cord into the router, and into the UPS (do so in such a way you
can tell if the power cord was removed). Put a security tape (like the
"do not cross this line" tape used by the cops) over the power switch on
the router and on the UPS.

(I find it hard to believe that you would have a multi-kilo dollar
router that is not on at least 100 buck UPS).

That will help detect him/her at the physical layer.

I assume she/he gets in through the console port. Secure it, and
require a password only you know.

Put a modem on the AUX for yourself for OOB management.

Implement a TACACS/RADIUS, and assign this person a username/password.
Track the hell out of it: there are more ways to do this than to choke
a cat.

ACL! ACL! ACL! Use them! If this person is telneting, lock down your
telnet sessions.

And, of course, you have SNMP!I assume that you have some type of
monitoring software? If so, monitor the router: whenever it goes down,
you should be paged immediately, and have a phone in that room with teh
router so that you can call this person and tell them to get out of
there NOW. You should have a second number to their boss, and tell him
about this person. Then you should have a third number to the boss of
the boss.

Good luck catching your "hacker".

Cisco also makes everyone trying to become a CCSI take and pass the CCNA

had to do this.

Well in order to bring an bit of clarity to this an often misunderstood
list, the fellow in question did indeed pass his written CCIE hoever not his
lab. We prodded him after he expressed a light hearted concern over not
having any certs to show for all his knowledge and work. Since I knew he is
very sharp, I told him to spend the $100.00 bucks and take the exam. I knew
he would pass and that it would make him feel better. After all, one is
ONLY a CCIE when they have passed both the written and labs. Take care,
hope that this clarified things!

Hello All :

I plan to take the CIT 4.0 exam next week.
However, I am not sure if I should go for the new Support 2.0 exam.
Lot of individuals in this group have complained about the CIT 4.0 exam
very poorly written.
Any thoughts ?

Also, are the BOSON tests useful for either CIT 4.0 or Support 2.0 ?

Thats is not quite all that you have to do. In order to get onto the CCDP
exam track you have to be a CCNA and CCDA. From that point you must then
pass either the FRS or ACRC, CLSC, CMTD once you have done that then you
should take the CCDP. You cna verify this on Cisco's website:

Cisco Internetwork Design (CCDP) exam [which I am booked to take on Monday

"Before we get into the heart of frame relay, lets

SCARED.

Anyway, my question is : Should the eight-byte flags
field be eight bits ? and the 16-byte address field be
16 bits? I can't see a 16 byte address field being
that efficient over serial links.

Cheers,

Phil.

RE: BCRAN/CMTD book question

There is a new BCRAN book out that you might want to consider, so far it has
gotten 5 star reviews, here is the URL:

Subject: BCRAN/CMTD book question

Hi group,

In an effort to continue my CCNP track, I am looking for a good BCRAN book.
The only one I can seem to find is the Cisco Press book entitled: Building
CISCO Remote Access Networks by Catherine Paquet.

Has anyone read this book? Would it be adequate study material? Would it
be as good a reference as, say, the Cisco Press ACRC book by Laura Chappel
for the real world?

Thank you in advance to all who take the time to answer my email.

Oh, if there is a better book out there for this test I would like to hear
about it too.

Thanks!

Scott

Go get a subscription at the Zone! http://www.certificationzone.com/ and
you'll have everything you ever needed. Howard recently did the second part
to his BGP whitepaper.  Shy of that or even to compliment that;

BGP4 - Interdomain Routing in the Internet
http://www.bookpool.com/.x/qcgwoe4aim/ss/1?qs=BGP&Go.x=13&Go.y=12

and

Internet routing Architectures
http://www.bookpool.com/.x/qcgwoeaih1/sm/1562056522

Would be some other good references to have...

RE: HSRP Question

2000-06-06 Thread Tom Thomas

Okay you all are correct and I was not clear enough. On 11.0 it does not
work on everything later it does work as Edgar described (invoking default
group 0) as shown below.

 interface Ethernet0
 ip address 1.0.0.1 255.0.0.0
 no ip redirects
 no ip route-cache
 no ip mroute-cache
 standby priority 110
 standby preempt
 standby authentication microdot
 standby ip 1.0.0.2

ROUTER1#sh standby ethernet 0
Ethernet0 - Group 0
Local state is Init, priority 110, may preempt
  Hellotime 0 holdtime 0
Hot standby IP address is 10.1.1.1 configured
  Active router is unknown expired
  Standby router is unknown expired
Standby virtual mac address is .0c07.ac00

Now can I finish my lunch?

My interpretation of the examples that are presented are that the first
configuration will work, but will the second. Now, I am by no means an
expert, but I found in my handy dandy "Internetwork Troubleshooting
Handbook" where their example does not include the standby group number. I
also read that by not using a group number (ie 1, in this case) the standby
group would default to "0", and it would work. Could somebody please verify
this for me, because I would hate to propogate incorrect information.
Thanks.

When configuring HSRP, Cisco gives the example of:

interface ethernet 0
ip address 1.0.0.1 255.0.0.0
standby 1 ip 1.0.0.4
standby 1 preempt
standby 1 priority 110
standby authentication microdot

The question is:

If the group number ie; standby "1", is not included such as the following,
what happens?

 Example:

interface ethernet 0
ip address 1.0.0.1 255.0.0.0
standby ip 1.0.0.4
standby preempt
standby priority 110
standby authentication microdot

Thanks,
Mark
