Re: Internet phone, is it possible? [7:65123]

2003-03-13 Thread Vance Krier
Actually, there's quite a few vendors already doing this. One that I found
to be quite impressive was vonage.com. They've got it figured out. I'm
actually testing out their service for long distance service at my office.
They give you an ATA186 with the service, which I've connected to an FXO
port off my CCM system and setup least cost routing for long distance
service.

Actually, they had a deal on amazon where you purchase the ATA186 for $100
and they give you two months of their $40 unlimited long distance service
for free. Heck, it would cost me $100 to buy an ATA186 and I get two months
of free long distance included...what a deal.

Quality is remarkably good. It hardly ever hiccups at all, which is
surprising since our Internet connection gets hammered pretty often.
Anyway, I've been doing IP phones in production for several years and this
is by far the coolest VoIP service I personally have seen.

Vance

ps. Oh yea, 1) Vonage runs SIP. 2) When I'm on the road and run my
softphone (CCM), I do notice degredation when the latency gets up to a
couple hundred msec. Doesn't get unacceptable to me until about 600 - 1000
and then I start noticing dropouts.

Re: CCIE voice written and lab [7:66948]

2003-04-06 Thread Vance Krier
I took the beta exam and was quite surprised how easy it was. I didn't
study because I wanted to just take it to get a feel for if it was a
realistic test or not. I probably didn't pass it, but I wouldn't be
completely surprised if I did pass it. If not, I will pass it next time as
it is an extremely passable test.

I'd say it is mostly a hybrid test comprised of the material covered in
dqos, cipt, cvoice, unity, and evodd, with some basic ccnp/ccdp level stuff.

Nothing earth shattering, at least not in the beta.

Cheers,
Vance

TACACS - Cheap or Free [7:70764]

2003-06-16 Thread Vance Krier
Hey Group,

I'm just looking for a cheap or free TACACS+ server. This doesn't need to
be real powerful, just something I can use for playing around and possibly
to put on customer sites for real quick and easy outbound http auth
authentication purposes off a PIX.

Thanks,
Vance

Re: VoIP Clarification. [7:55682]

2002-10-16 Thread Vance Krier

Hey Stu,

In simple terms, yes you are correct. However, as I'm sure you know, you
need to take this type of setup with a grain of salt. If you have a decent
bandwidth, low latency, consistent connection between the phone and CM, it
works fine. There's absolutely no guarantees for QoS on the Internet.
Now, FWIW, I use softphone on my laptop when I travel and I've gotten
satisfactory results (IMO) better than 75% of the time.

I always pitch this as being a *kewl* feature, but never as a selling point.
I'm
very, very cautious with customers over this. As long as the user
using it is understanding and realizes there will be times when it doesn't
work or the quality is really crappy, then typically they stay happy. Not
something I'd give to Internet/computer/technology illiterate executive.

I love it, by the way.

Good luck,
Vance

Re: VoIP Clarification. [7:55682]

2002-10-16 Thread Vance Krier

Hey BJ,

Its all about IP. Basically the softphone has a config button where you can
specify your 'source' ip in a drop down of bound addresses. I usually just
make sure the IP associated with the RAS connection is selected (purely for
the audio stream), then the IP phone will register with CM (because it is
programmed with the IP of CM), and CM will recognize and record the source
ip of the phone.

When CM sets up a call between two endpoints, it notifies each of the phones
of the other's IP, handles the codec negotiation, etc, then steps out of the
conversation and the two endpoint's RTP streams go direct.

Now, if you're referring to Locations as they relate to CM, and not physical
Locations, that's a different ball game. Locations in CM are used for CAC
(call admission control) to limit how much bandwidth is used on the wan
between sites or internal on the lan for a site (unfortunately there's no
distinction between them). Personally, I haven't used this in production
yet. What little I've played with it in the lab, I really didn't like the
implementation in CM. I think they've got a little ways to go before this
will be solid. Just my opinion, of course.

Hope this helps,
Vance

Actually, there's a range command that allows you to modify multiple ports
at a time. At least on the Native IOS on the 6500 and 4000s. But I agree

I think the non-wildcard digits on POTS dial peers get stripped before they
are outpulsed. So you might need a 'prefix 79' under the 'dial-peer voice 1
pots' .

Re: Cheap IP Serial Console Switch? [7:50432]

2002-08-01 Thread Vance Krier

Cisco made a cheaper one, model 500CS. Specifically 508CS and 516CS with 8
and 16 rj45 serial ports and a 10Mb AUI interface. I've bought two of them
on ebay for around $300, and $400. They work great. I don't see any on
Ebay right now, but they show up from time to time.

Good Luck,

Hey John,

LOL!

You should also be able to get basic functionality out of the phones by
implementing IP Keyswitch on a router. Check out the following link:

Re: Voice Certification [7:52734]

2002-09-07 Thread Vance Krier

Hey Travis,

I did them DQoS, CIPT, CVOICE...but that might be a little backward. There
was some QoS material on the CVoice that I might not have known if I hadn't
studied the DQoS material first.

DQoS is the hardest of the three, IMO (mainly because of the lack of study
material). Followed by CVoice then CIPT. Although, I have quite a bit of
experience on CM.

I think the Boson tests are really worthwhile, although they didn't have a
DQoS practice test at the time I sat the test so I haven't seen that one.

Good Luck,
Vance

Re: can't map before ping first? [7:53599]

2002-09-19 Thread Vance Krier

> "What configuration problem on a host computer can disallow a router from
> maintaining its entry in an arp cache - even though the host is active?"
***Strange problem. Two things come to mind. Duplicate IP of the router on
the 100.100.100.x network. The server is arping for the router and gets a
response from the duplicate, therefore has the wrong arp entry and won't be
able to initiate traffic for remote networks. When the ping goes across,
the router arps the server, causing the server to update its arp cache with
the correct entry, and now it can work properly. I doubt that's the case
becuase the 'net use' statements shouldn't have done anything different then
the ping from that perspective.

Secondly, I saw a really strange problem with a wireless bridge (breezecom)
one time. Layout was print server ---6509(L3)bridgejetdirect. For
some reason, the bridge would lose the arp entry (or something) and stop
forwarding requests to the jetdirect if it was inactive for more than about
10-15 minutes. Since the MSFC was caching the arp entries for 4 hours, it
didn't arp the jetdirect 30 minutes later when a print job came through.
You could not ping the jetdirect from the msfc. But, if you dropped a
machine on the other side of the bridge (from the jetdirect) but inside the
msfc, you could ping it (because it initiated an arp) and then everything
else would start working since the bridge was 'woke' back up. I sniffed the
connections and when we pinged it from the msfc, I could see the icmp echo
go into the bridge, it just never came out the other side...until a fresh
arp. I never did resolve the underlying problem, just lowered the msfc arp
cache aging time to 10 minutes.

Weird stuff.

Good luck,
Vance

Re: Need to make an access port very slow on a 2950 [7:54764]

2002-10-02 Thread Vance Krier

Hey John,

One thing that comes to mind is rate-limiting. Do you have L3? Maybe you
could create a new vlan (to make all traffic go through the L3 device) with
a new subnet and drop that port/pc into that vlan. Then setup an
access-list and rate limit commands to throttle that traffic to 9600.
Something like this:

access-list rate-limit 110

interface
rate-limit input access-group rate-limit 110 9600 0 0 conform-action
transmit exceed-action drop
rate-limit output access-group rate-limit 110 9600 0 0 conform-action
transmit exceed-action drop

Good luck,
Vance
