Does anyone know a link to somewhere in CCO where there is a listing of all
the device symbols and what they are? I am looking at some symbols that are
starting to get complex and wanted to reference something to make sure I
know what I am looking at.

Thanks!

Fwd: Re: Problem with RSA ACE SERVER (aka SecureID) [7:70035]

2003-06-03 Thread Pete Felber
There used to be a key value called 'shared secret' that you had to
configure on the ACE server as well as the 'requesting' device (and
unfortuanately it was plain text). I haven't played with an ACE server
for about 5yrs so that may have changed.

2501 and 2503 Lab [7:65942]

2003-03-21 Thread Pete Nugent
Just got a small Lab fo home 2 x 2501 and a 2503 here's what I really need
to know. As the MCNS is fo router security mainly will this be OK.

Will these run BGP, OSPF, ISIS IPSec/DES/3DES. Basically what are the
limitations. They all have V12 IOS. Seems like an easy question but I dont
wanna start trying something I cant do.

Also if I want to look at the CSSP at a later date are 2 PIX 501's enough.

Any advice on additions to my Lab will be appreciated.

RE: dialer remote name/ppp chap hostname [7:59224]

2002-12-16 Thread pete bateman
Keith,

Its to do with the order in which the call is handled. The dialer-remote
name is what allows the incomming call to be bound to the dialer. Otherwise
IOS has no way of knowing which dialer the call is for. The call must
authenticate first, then get the remote name from chap, then lookup the
dialer. No dialer remote name, no call binding. LCP will complete, but you
will get no IPCP nego because the call has not bound to an IP enabled Dialer.

PPP chap host is only used as an outgoing alternative hostname if the device
at the other end is not a cisco router, or there is some other reason why
you do not want to identify your router with its real hostname.

Get rid of the ppp chap hostname commands put the dialer remote names back
in, make sure the local prompt matches the remote user and remote dialer
remote statement each way and it will work.

Re: OSPF Hub and Spoke [7:9268]

2001-06-21 Thread pete bateman

As far as I can see, both scenarios would work, as long as you have an area
0 defined somewhere. If you put the links into individual area, then you
would at least have to have area 0 on the ethernet or a loopback on the hub
router.

A router does not implicitly assume the role of backbone router through
having multiple areas connected unless one of them is area zero.

If for example you had one router connected to area 1 and area 2, the router
would maintain a database for both areas, but there would be no type 3 LSA's
or inter area routes in either database. So other area 1 routers , for
instance, would have no knowledge of area 2 routes and vice-versa. By
definition, all inter-area routes must go via the backbone. No backbone, no
inter area routes.

I have been tripped up by this in the lab.

While the above would work, it would probably not be advisable as you have
one router maintaining 5 link state databases. I agree with the others that
the better solution (unless your hub router is madly powerfull in comparison
to the spokes) is to extend area 0 across the wan links.

As for extending area 0 out onto the spoke ethernets, you can extend area 0
as far as you like, only being limited by the number of participating
routers in an area, I forget the numbers.

The Fast Ethernet port did not find a carrier when preparing to send a
packet. This means that it is no longer receiving signals from the LAN.
This problem can be caused by disconnected Fast Ethernet cabling or a
transceiver failure.

Recommended Action: Check the Fast Ethernet wiring and the port adapter.
If the message recurs, copy the error message exactly as it appears on
the console or in the system log, call your Cisco technical support

Re: Which one is correct?

2000-11-11 Thread User PETE

I am assuming you have two PVCs at each branch office for either a
doubly-large CIR, or because you have two physical interfaces. either way,
unless some weird frame-switching is being done, and im not sure if this
is possible ( though it prolly is ) each branch office pvc is going to
require a corresponding pvc at the CO. you will need to use six
frame-relay map commands on the point-to-multipoint at the CO.

When multiple PVCs are configured in a subinterface of

local DLCI numbers are needed. There are three branch
offices, and each branch office has two PVCs going to
central site router. Then there will be totally 6 PVCs
in this whole structure. From the view of central
site, its router has three subinterfaces, and each
 subinterface has two PVCs.
Now, how many DLCI numbers do I need totally at
 central site router?
Would it be 6 because there are six PVCs?

Would it be 3 because there are three subinterfaces?

I hope this question is clearer.

By

You

redundancy

2000-10-11 Thread Pete

This is what I have to work with. I have 2 T1, each going into s0 and s1.

What can I do to enable redundancy? If the T1 in s0 fails , s1 will
automatically kick in and takeover.

Also , what monitoring software do any of you use to monitor your networks.
specifically for network outages?

Pete

Re: PIX Firewall show connection counters

2000-06-01 Thread Pete Ruttman (adminpr)

Yes, "clear xlate" is what you want. Clear xlate will knock people off but
more than likely they will "refresh" their browser if it's web base. FTP
connection may timeout and telnet session will drop. You said "you might
as
well reboot if you're gonna clear xlate" - but the PIX takes about a minute
to reboot as opposed to clear xlate being an instant function. In an
environment where I work we have 5000+ users on the inside interface
using
the outside (internet) and dmz interfaces. A reboot would get me fired!

I can't believe you can clear xlate for all 5000+ users and get away with it. Maybe
you don't have much telnet but when I tried clear xlate years ago for the first time
my users certainly let me know I can't do it again. I now do my reloads or clears
late at night over my DSL connection.

Re: PIX Firewall show connection counters

2000-05-30 Thread Pete Ruttman (adminpr)

Is there any commands to clear the counters on a PIX ?
I amtrying to reset to 0 the numbers displayed by
"show connections".

It seems, the only way is a F/W reboot, to clear the
`show connections` counters in order to monitor max
number of TCP/IP connection through the PIX

My gut reaction is that isn't possible since the show connections is totaling the
current xlate connections the PIX is doing. You can use clear xlate to clear out the
xlate connections but then of course you are knocking people off so you might as well
reboot.

Re: DSU/CSU Back-to-back with T1 crossover

2000-05-18 Thread Pete Ruttman (adminpr)

On Tue, 16 May 2000, Pete Ruttman (adminpr) wrote:

I am trying to make a couple of ADTRAN TSU 100 to work with a T1

Do it all the time. Gotta love those alarm pairs.

 1) did you configure clockrate on the DCE-side of the back-to-back
connection?

The routers connected to the TSUs will both be DTE. He'll want to set
clock on one TSU to "Internal" and the other to "Line" (or maybe they call
it "Network").

Darn. You are right. This step is only for back-to-back cabling. Not when using a
pair of csu/dsus.

 2) Did you check your adtran manual for info on putting them back-to-
back?
My adc/kentrox csu/dsus require a dip switch change to work back-to-
back.

Really? I've never needed to do that, just set one end to provide clock.
Maybe the Kentrox ones use a dipswitch, but the TSU series, IIRC, have
a little LCD display and arrow buttons to navigate it.

Here is what Kentrox tech support said that got my 2 D-SERVs working together
back-to-back:

build a cable like this:

pair 1: 1 to 4
   2 to 5
pair 2: 4 to 1
   5 to 2

Set one unit to internal timing and the other to loop timing. Match all other
settings.

Re: SPAN port on Cat5500-Performance?

2000-05-11 Thread Pete Ruttman (adminpr)

I generally just use set span "source vlan" mod/port# and then plug your
sniffer in.
I have several switches with 200 users (10/100rj45) and 300 users (rj21)
and receive no significant hit.

You can use ps -c to check switch performance.

Don't use the set span enable. Everytime I tried this, the switch needs to
be rebooted. I haven't figured out why yet.

also remember that the the port that you are spanning to (the one with the snffer)
cannot be used as a regular network port anymore. Spanning disables that ability and
it can only be used to watch the spanned packets.
So you can't test for things on the sniffer PC.
