RE: GroupStudy we have a problem.... [7:28901]

2001-12-13 Thread Michael Williams

That's incorrect. Here is important tax-related information surrounding
this situation:

1) As long as anyone gives Paul a gift of less than $10,000, then they (the
giver) does not have to file a gift return.

2) Anyone that gives Paul a gift cannot take a tax deduction for the
contribution because Paul (no offense =) isn't a formal charity like the Red
Cross, etc.

3) Paul would NOT have to pay any tax on any monies he receives as a gift
from any of us in the list. As far as we know, there is no limit to the
amount of gifts he can receive and still not have to pay tax on it.

It pays to be married to a tax accountant =)

How about $ 15.00 annual membership fee for the Professional and CCIE? A
hundred paying members would mean $ 1,500; two hundred paying members will
result to $ 3,000. This will go a long way in upgrading equipment and
providing better services to the members. With paid membership, there will

Be careful about dispensing legal advice -- unless of course, you are a
member of the Bar, or a CPA or even an HR Block Graduate . Whether
there is any tax due depends on a number of factors -- and quite frankly
we don't have enough information to make any determination about this -- at
this time. But -- assuming Paul runs this as a business, taxes are only
due to George W. if there are profits. Hence, if all the donations are
actually used to support GroupStudy, there probably is no tax liability.
However, once again, I caution -- this is simply a hypothetical based on
an assumption. (Of course, Paul COULD take the donations and treat
himself to a relaxing trip to the Cisco Islands!! It is NOT
INTENDED to be legal advice of any type.

I want to thank everyone for offering to contribute. For now, we are ok
after selling banner ads. The real hero is Lon Cameron and the guys at
InFlow for hosting our humble little site for free. If we had to pay for
bandwidth, there would be a major donation drive required.

We should be installing more memory in the server today. So you will see
the site go down today. That will allow me to rebuild the Cisco archives
(if you have not noticed the search engine is down). In the long run, we
need to find a better solution instead of using glimpse as the back end of
the search engine. If someone wants to look at using a product such as
ht://dig and designing an interface so it looks very similar to what we are
currently using, please send me an e-mail.

Take care,

Paul

Greg,

You point is well taken. I don't know for sure if Paul runs groupstudy like
a business or if it's something he does personally. I assumed (evil, I
know) that Paul ran this as an individual. Having said that, I bounced this
off of my wife (the CPA, hehe) and although she mentioned that Paul COULD
take the donations and treat himself to a relaxing trip to the Cisco
Islands!! just as you pointed out, she gave me the info I posted on this
topic. So even if this were a business, if gifts were given to Paul as an
individual, the same tax benefits would apply, however, we would give up the
right to cry about it when Paul posts from the Cisco Islands. Hehe...

Paul,

Is there some mechanism by which we could donate money toward the
purchase of new equipment? I can see that may cause more headaches than
it's worth but I thought I'd ask. I think if a lot of the people who
use this *free* service would chip in a little bit we'd be able to get
some pretty nice stuff.

What do you think, is that even feasible? What about paid memberships
to the professional and CCIE list? I *know* that would create a lot of
hassles, as well, so it's probably not even worth considering. However,
a few thousand people paying $2.99/month or whatever would make the
required equipment upgrades quite a bit easier!

 sent
out. It has been fixed so if you do not see your posting, please
 resend. I
have shipped more memory to InFlow. Lon has agreed to install it for
 us.
This should help. So by the way, the server will be down for a
 little
 while tomorrow :-)

The truth is we desperately need some better equipment. Currently we
 are
using a server I built for $500 dollars two years ago. I purchased a
 used
Dell Server but need to upgrade the RAID array and a few other things
 before
 putting it online.

 Take care,

If monetary contribution would cause you more problem than otherwise,
perhaps some members from the group can sell you their companies' surplus
server for a dollar. It would be a totally legitimate business transaction.

Paul,

For the past few months, I have taken advantage of the extremely valuable
database at Groupstudy. In early November, I took the CCDA exam and passed.
Two questions on that exam were topics covered in the discussions here. I
have the CCDP and the CCIE Written exams coming up this month, and I would
be more than willing to kick out some money to continue to keep this
resource available. As with others who posted on this subject, give me an
address and I will give you a check.

Happy Holidays to all,

If we wanted to contribute a few dollars to the cause, what would be the
right mechanism to do that? With as many people as live on this list, it
seems like voluntary contributions could help defray the cost of an
upgrade

keep

How about $ 15.00 annual membership fee for the Professional and CCIE? A
hundred paying members would mean $ 1,500; two hundred paying members will
result to $ 3,000. This will go a long way in upgrading equipment and
providing better services to the members. With paid membership, there will
be a premium site to access technical articles, best practices, networking
troubleshooting guides, etc.

Just my 0.2c contributions.
