There is a new exam, called SECUR. With this exam, no PIX stuff is
covered--only router stuff. I would definitely look at the objectives for
the exam, since there is a bunch of new stuff, like Authentication proxy,
IDS, and other stuff.

Cheers!

You should be knowledgeable about everything in the Exam Guide.
Many of the topics are not well covered in the MCNS book, but the
Security Configuratio Guide is pretty good.

http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/sw/iosswrel/ps1835/products_configuration_guide_book09186a0080087df1.html

mind the wrap.

FWIW, some people I know think the MCNS (640-100) is a very
poorly-written test.

Cisco 640-100 MCNS exam [7:71388]

2003-06-25 Thread John Holp
PIX People,

I am currently studying for Cisco's 640-100 MCNS exam and current study
material seems a bit thin. I have the Boson package, pretty good, a good
reference book that I have read about 3 time.

I am looking for good study scenarios where one has to step through setting
up a router, firewall etc.

I am a CCNA, CCNP, and CCIE (written) --- a 98% correct score on that exam,
so feel pretty good about things, BUT I can tell when study materail is not
so good. I have purchase some study notes that are really bad, lots of
mistakes.

I recently purchased a nice new PIX 501 firewall with 3DES and am having
fun. I need any and all good study sources that are also pertinent to what
one is apt to see on the actual exam

The mission is to understand, not figure out how to cheat on the exam, can
anyone help?

Thanks,

John

Re: Cisco 640-100 MCNS exam [7:71388]

2003-06-25 Thread annlee
FWIW--

The 640-100 is being retired 30 Sep 2003, so you may want to consider taking
the new SECUR exam (642-501), which just went active 17 Jun. Granted, there
aren't a lot of materials published for it, but the published material for
MCNS is poor. My opinion of the exam is shared by a more experienced old
hand locally, who took the same exam not too long before I did.

The exam was really quite poor -- lots of questions about configuration
options in AAA (which options in authenticate vs. authorize, for instance).
I recall very few -- if any -- questions about the PIX. Much of the
information was, frankly, old, which is why I recommend the newer exam.
Also, I had a handful of questions which were word-for-word the same as a
commercial practice exam. That practice test was of very little use -- it
did not reflect the exam content (and I am very unhappy with the
explanations behind the answers).

For more information, feel free to contact me offline, understanding I will
not violate the NDA.

outdated. Also, I'm currently reading Cisco Secure PIX Firewalls:

written for the new exams these will do. I'm more interested in some updated
practice exams for these two certs.

Network Security to be more than sufficient. In fact I think this was the
easiest of all the tests that I've taken.

List of Security Refernces in MCNS Book [7:60363]

2003-01-05 Thread Greg Macaulay
Hi all,

Call me lazy (but not OLD!) but has anyone extracted a typed list of the
Chapter References in the Cisco PRess MCNS book? If so, could you forward
the list to me. I'm compiling a list of security references -- for use in
my security studies -- and am hoping to use this as a jumping off point (I
do realize that some of these references are outdated -- but it's only a
starting point -- not an ending point!) I simply do not have enough time
left in this life to individually type all these references.

I am hoping to compile a fairly comprehensive list and then share it with
everyone (probably on a web site.) Nope -- this is NOT aimed at
certification -- rather it will be a byproduct to help us get some grounding
and more than passing familiarity in the security field.

Also, I'm certain that there are numerous web sites containg such lists
already published -- but as a senior citizen, I'm not aware of all of them.
So feel free to contribute listings and suggestions -- !!

2002-09-23 Thread Mohannad Khuffash

Dear All,
According to Cisco press MCNS book by Wenstrom, there are some chapters are
not included in the exam as Cisco site review like:
Cisco Encryption Technology Overview
Configuring Cisco Encryption Technology
Configuring PIX Firewall IPSec Support
So please any one did the exam recently, are these subjects included in the
exam or not ?

Thanks for your help

RE: MCNS Exam [7:53894]

2002-09-23 Thread Kaminski, Shawn G

The new MCNS exam is supposed to replace the current exam in October 2002
(probably in about a week or so) with new features.

When the MCNS beta exam was available, Cisco made this announcement:

The MCNS 641-100 BETA exam is the final step in preparation for the October
2002 launch of the revised MCNS exam. It focuses on the new material
included in the new MCNS 3.0 course releasing August 2002. The MCNS 3.0
course fully replaces the existing MCNS 2.0 course. Content covering the PIX
Firewall has been removed and several new IOS Firewall and IPSec features
have been added. In addition to these new chapters and labs, all content
focuses on the IOS software version 12.2.8T, CS ACS 3.0 for Windows 2000
Server, as well as the new Cisco Unified 3.0 IPSec Client.

RE: MCNS beta exam [7:51772]

2002-08-20 Thread Roberts, Larry

In response to my alter ego:)

I have now taken all 3 betas. There where no Comment button on any of them,
which I suspect is by design.
If so, my comments may have been directed at their ability to write English.
All the tests were poorly written IMHO.
The MCNS has questions on hardware that was not supposed to be on the test,
and they would have questions asking you to do things, but not specifying
which platform that they would like you to do them on.

I find myself not having a clue whether I passed or failed the exams. If you
would have asked me prior, I would have thought that I could sleep through
them and pass, so I dunno.

All the feedback that I have received on the test seems to indicate that I
wasn't the only one that had that opinion.

What is your opinions...?

Thanks

It hasn't been decided yet. It will be decided after the beta closes and all
of the results have been compiled. You should receive your score about 12
weeks after the beta closes. I have another comment about the recent
security exams. Did anyone have a comments button? I talked to one guy that
said he did. Everyone else including myself didn't. The only difference that
we came too was that his testing center had a 17 monitor and mine had 15.
I think that this would be a very big hindsight if most of us were unable to
make comments due to screen size limitations. Then again maybe he was
mistaken. :-) Anyone have any feedback on this?

I gave the MCNS exam today. I agree with the quality of questions. There
were few questions that didn't had the correct answers to them, i.e. all the
options were wrong.
I'm sure that these questions be corrected in the real exams later.

Scott,

Think of it in terms of burglarizing a house. If the burglar is
smart enough to get in to a house without anyone noticing, it's not your
duty to report it to the police - you don't even know it happened!
However, if you hear a sound of breaking glass, and notice the valuables
being dragged into the panel van outside, aren't your responsibilities a
bit different?

Just so we are clear, you *are* emailing Cisco every time an email is
posted to the list. (Check my .sig if you need to be sure). Several
Cisco employees are subscribed to the various groupstudy lists, mainly
for the same reason that you are: to learn about the Cisco product line
and routing/switching/security/certification in general. However, if
something really stupid happens on the list, why shouldn't it be
referred to interested parties?

The FrankenPIX situation was, in fact, referred to Cisco legal,
especially when they started popping up on eBay with alarming
regularity

so. I
am not saying cracking software is right or that all of you do this, but
get
real. I appreciate the support from people who see it somewhat like I

Oh, and because this is a public forum you scrutinize people for

THIS LIST, do it in private (since it appears to be OK there)! And if
someone makes the same mistake as Faisal, break it to him differently,

RE: MCNS Exam Papers [7:50269]

2002-07-31 Thread Roberts, Larry

Just to add my 2 cents. I don't have a problem with him e-mailing Boson, but
I do have a problem with him e-mailing boson and coping the entire list.
Copy boson and the initiator, but the list doesn't need to see this
squabbling.

This e-mail thread just needs to die. We are all adults and know the
difference between right and wrong.

Thanks

Scott,

Think of it in terms of burglarizing a house. If the burglar is smart
enough to get in to a house without anyone noticing, it's not your duty to
report it to the police - you don't even know it happened! However, if you
hear a sound of breaking glass, and notice the valuables being dragged into
the panel van outside, aren't your responsibilities a bit different?

Just so we are clear, you *are* emailing Cisco every time an email is
posted to the list. (Check my .sig if you need to be sure). Several Cisco
employees are subscribed to the various groupstudy lists, mainly for the
same reason that you are: to learn about the Cisco product line and
routing/switching/security/certification in general. However, if something
really stupid happens on the list, why shouldn't it be referred to
interested parties?

The FrankenPIX situation was, in fact, referred to Cisco legal,
especially when they started popping up on eBay with alarming regularity

Just when I thought I was out, they pull me back in

That was cheap! NOT COOL! Its one thing to disagree with cracking the Boson
tests, but to act like you are holier than thou and e-mail Boson about

just proves that you are a RAT hypocrite ! Why didnt you e-mail cisco when
people on this list were discussing the Franken PIX. Yeah, I thought so. I
am not saying cracking software is right or that all of you do this, but get
real. I appreciate the support from people who see it somewhat like I do.
Oh, and because this is a public forum you scrutinize people for something
that YOU may do in private. It breaks down like this, NOTHING ILLEGAL ON

THIS LIST, do it in private (since it appears to be OK there)! And if
someone makes the same mistake as Faisal, break it to him differently,
Jeremy! We are all professionals here and we should all have the same
respect for each other on a professional level. I didnt mean to offend
anyone, (except Matt), I was just bothered by the actions of some. Lets get
back to discussing technology!

RE: MCNS Exam Papers [7:50278]

2002-07-31 Thread Brian Zeitz

I say to be honest, if you use a boson test, or any other software and
you directly benefit off that software, then you should buy the product.
People are honest for the most part, if you are directly benefiting off
some piece of software, then send the money in.

We are an MSDN site, and if you want to set up a lab to test Exchange
2000 SP3 at home, in a lab, I do not see a problem with it. Esp. if you
are going to reformat the server when you are done. This is not illegal;
because that is what a development, set is used for. Cisco does not have
a development program, as far as I am aware. I have a licensed copy of
IOS firewall for my 2501, but I am not sure what Cisco policy is for
using Firewall IOS for training use (non-production environment). Maybe
Cisco could make some IOS that are for training only? Like an IOS
development kit.

I also thought about this. If someone stole my car, it is gone. However,
what if someone made a copy of it, and drove it around? I guess they
should pay licensing fees to Pontiac, for all those workers and their
families who helped build first car. On the other hand, for the car they
did not build, because someone was using a copy of mine.

Licenses are very tricky, they have to write everything in the book to
cover themselves. (kind of like my health benefits) I am honest, but
sometimes is not possible not to break a licensing agreement by
accident. I think if you benefit from the product, you should pay. If
you steal the boson tests, and pass your CCNP, then that is not right.

That being said, no one should throw stones. Everyone is human. However,
to directly benefit off someone else's material with no intention to
pay, I do not think you should walk with your head up if you did that.
If you do not pay in cash, you pay in other ways walking around with a
guilty conscience.

You are welcome to use this common sense approach on metering your
software usage.

RE: MCNS Exam Papers *sigh* [7:50202]

2002-07-30 Thread Scott Morris

First, I resent the fact that you make a bold assumption that EVERYONE
does things as you may do. Second, there are borderline rules about
things like Napster and such. (Read the court cases in case you're
curious)

And whether you quietly do it in your own home is a different story and
different problem. When you take something to use for your PROFIT
(getting a certification yields profit) that's different. When you
BLATANTLY ask for the crack in a public forum, that's different.

Do you see anyone going around and asking for a copy of the .NET servers
so they run an ISP??? No. If you want to test them out, you get 120
day evals for free. If you want to test the Boson out, you download it
for free and get a few questions. If you want to use the WHOLE thing
for profit, you BUY the damned thing.

This isn't an argument about being an angel or not. I'm fully aware of
the arguments on both sides of the issue. However, there's no grey
maybe area for a certification test. So quit being uppity and
retarded about the whole concept and spend your $35. If you don't
manage to make that money back in a year from your certification, send
me an e-mail, and IFrom: Scott Morris

And there's great logic coming from the new security professionals who
want to keep things secure on your network... Sure, you can trust 'em,

I mean... They're not doing anything REALLY illegal, because other
things cost too much.

You're trying to tell me that $35 is too expensive for you? First,
it's a far cry from several hundred for other products. However, the
bottom line is that if you REALLY use something, and you obviously find

value in it (otherwise you wouldn't be asking for it), then just buy
the damned thing.

Not only is it the right thing to do, but it keeps costs down for the
rest of us who put some value on the concept of security and legality
to begin with!

I guess this would be the wrong time bring up all of the properly
licensed copies of Enterprise FW/IDS IOS out there in the world...?

...yeah, I thought so, too.

But seriously, I wouldn't be too hard on Faisal - nothing you say to
someone who has proclaimed the desire to commit an illegal act in a
public forum is going to hurt him more than he's already hurt himself.

IIRC, it's even archived at www.groupstudy.com for any potential future
employers to read

And for one final note, the Boson exams are generally worth every bit of
the $39.95 Instead of trying to hack the thing, consider skipping
the third and fourth viewings of Attack of the Clones and go encourage
people to produce quality content by becoming a customer

This doesn't answer your question perfectly, but could be a good advise.

What I do is to take all the tests, and the one I score the worst in I buy.

I also look who wrote the test to see if I recognize a writer from a
previous good test.

I have not tried the MCNS tests yet, so I cannot give you any
recommendations.

Preparing for MCNS [7:28480]

2001-12-07 Thread Zeke Gibson

Hello All,

First off let me thank everyone who participates on this list, very helpful
folks ;)

Now down to business, I am getting close to taking the MCNS exam, and so far
I have only used the Cisco Press book Managing Cisco Network Security, I
read it through 3 times and feel I have a good grasp on the material. I also
have read over numerous white papers and documents from CCO which I thought
would be helpful to me. I have the Cisco exam blueprint and have tried my
best to map my efforts to the blueprint. I am also planning on purchasing
the Boson MCNS practice exam, and have checked the resources available at
www.cramsession.com, mostly the posts related to the exam and the Exam
Cram document. Any other helpful books, sites, software that may be useful?

Also, without breaking NDA of course, anyone know if there is any overlap
between MCNS and and PIX exam? Thanks in advance for any advice,

-Zeke

MCNS Exam taken [7:28317]

2001-12-06 Thread Chewy Gravy

I took the MCNS exam yesterday and found it to be one of the best written,
most straightforward tests I've taken so far. The questions were well
written and made sense for the most part. I only found myself scratching my
head at one or two.

The MCNS course materials (I took it through Global Knowledge) were a great
source:
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/1578701031/qid=1007671411/sr=8-1/ref=sr_8_7_1/103-8821679-8073459
(mind the wrap)

and I'd recommend Boson test #2 - some questions were virtually
word-for-word.

One down, three to go.

MCNS Question [7:27064]

2001-11-21 Thread Hunt Lee

It would be greatly appreciated if anyone could give me a hand on this. I
have read the MCNS Ciscopress several times (in particular between Chapter
15 to 18), yet I am still very confused about this:

For IKE Authentication, I understand that one can use either:

pre-shared keys =

crypto isakmp policy 100
authentication pre-share

or RSA. = (more scalable than Pre-shared key)

crypto isakmp policy 100
authentication rsa-sig

However, on RSA, what is the difference between RSA encrypted nonces and RSA
Signatures?

Thanks in advance.

I need a little more advice from you. You are saying that I should take
either CSPFA or CSVPN first, take MCNS third. Take IDSPM last.

What reference material do I need to prepare for the CSPFA and CSVPN? I have
the CSPFF and CSPFA version 1.0 course notes and Cisco Press MCNS
coursebook.
What about IDSPM?

Thanks for your time and advice.

Take the MCNS third. It wraps all of it together. All the exams are CCNA
level exams. They all seem to pull from the same database. The IDS is a
little
different but the other 3 are all similar.

If so, what books need to be prepared apart from Cisco press book written by

studying and understanding the concept is enough.

Re: MCNS 2.0 [7:12091]

2001-07-12 Thread Engelhard M. Labiro

Hi,
I prepared using Michael Wenstrom book and Donald C. Lee`s
book (Enhanced IP Services for Cisco Networks, Chapter 6-8
ISBN 1-57870-106-6). I think Donald`s book is easy to
understand than Michael`s which looks like a manual that
anyone can download from CCO.
Understanding the concept to pass this exam is not enough,
since there are a lot of Qs regarding the CLI (fo PIX or IOS)
to configure IPSec and CBAC.

If so, what books need to be prepared apart from Cisco press book written
by
Michael Wenstrom. Any comments on how the questions are, and what level of
difficulty it is. Do we need to have hands on experience on Pix or rather
studying and understanding the concept is enough.
 Thanks in advance

RE: MCNS 2.0 [7:12091]

2001-07-12 Thread Matthew Crane

That book is good enough, concentrate on Chapters 1 thru 3 and 13 thru 14
inclusive.

When i took the exam there were very few CLI type questions, at least 70% on
putting together a security policy and PKI, IKE, ISAKMP etc.

As to CLI understand things like how to clear the NAT table, what NAT
0(Zero) does, and the process of AAA, Radius TACACS+

Good Luck

CCNP Security MCNS CIDS exam coursework ? [7:4503]

2001-05-15 Thread David Heaton

Hi All

I'm studying for the MCNS
have found Managing Cisco Network Security by Michael Wenstrom is a good
book

But I can't find any specific publications for the CIDS exam
I've registered for the Beta exam for this

Is anyone else studying for the security specialisation out there?

FYI: put no ip route-cache on WAN interfaces for IPSEC
- cost me about 2 hours!

The Security/VPN exam at the bottom of the Elearning list:
http://www.cisco.com/wwtraining/colt/ (requires CCO login)
is useful if anyone is interested

Has anyone tried the boson exams for MCNS or IDS?

TIA

Re: CCNP Security MCNS CIDS exam coursework ? [7:4503]

2001-05-15 Thread Brad McConnell

The currrent MCNS book really isn't too bad. The beginning chapters are
generalish fluff, but the configuration chapters give you essentially
exactly what the test is going to throw at you. I used the first set of
Boson practice tests. They were riddled with errors and confusion in the
ways I'm used to from them, but they get the job done and do make you more
comfortable with the content. I don't regret the 29$ expense.

Haven't seen ANYTHING on IDS, and it's the only test I have left. Our
company doesn't really consider Cisco a big player in the IDS field, so I've
never even seen the gear to learn from. I'm thinking about reading up on
cisco.com and taking the test anyway, to see if it's doable.

RE: Specializations MCNS-Response from Cisco [7:1959]

2001-05-02 Thread Greg Macaulay

No -- the security specialization (with one exam) ended in January sometime.
Now it's four exams. There are other CCNP specializations like VOIP, and
ATM that require only one exam that are still obtainable until May 14.

Good luck.

I also got this template answer twice when I contacted Cisco through the
Certification Tracking System. They ignored my specific question and sent me
the same prewritten answer.

So I still do not know CCNP+MCNS before May 14th is CCNP+Security or what?

So what exactly are they saying?

To put the MCNS +Security Specialization question to [7:2098]

2001-04-26 Thread Cooper, David

Dear Dave,

Thank you for contacting Cisco Career Certifications and training.

Being CCNA or CCNP you need to take all four exams to be a Security
Qualified Specialist. MCNS is the first of all four exams. The may 14th
deadline is for specializations that are retiring only. Security is not one
of them. If you have any further questions, please feel free to contact us
for assistance.

Best of luck with your certification goals.

Kind regards,
The Cisco Career Certifications Team

The Advanced PIX material is now included in a separate course, called
CSPFA, consisting of 9 chapters. The MCNS course does cover PIX basics but
not in any detail.

Can anyone give me an idea if the MCNS course teaches PIX configuration or
if you have to take both the MCNS and Adv Pix?

MCNS 2.0

2000-12-22 Thread Tim O'Brien

Well, I took the MCNS 2.0 test today so I could qualify for the one test
instead of 4 after January. Got an 883 with only a 708 required. I have to
say that the Boson MCNS test #1 was outstanding! Study that and use the
links provided in the answers to gain more knowledge. I also read the Cisco
Press "Enhanced IP Services for Cisco Networks" book. It was a great book.
Excellent job on the Boson Bernard, I hope your CCIE written tests are as
good!

Thanks!

Yet another CCNP/ MCNS tips?

2000-12-19 Thread EDiT

Well, I wanted to thank everyone who posts info about their study habits and
materials. Thanks to you all I finished my CCNP today.

Now for the question: Anyone have feed back on the MCNS? I am scheduled next
week, and know a lot of the general concepts(I've been doing security for a
while), but I am a bit rusty on specifics(PIX commands, etc). Any comments
on the break-up of the test as far as content is concerned?

From my experience with this exam just a week ago, this is what you should know:

Know your PIX commands.
Know all the crypto commands.
Know the debug outputs on the PIX and IOS firewall features.
Know all types of all the PIX models and their features.
Know all requirements to run the IOS firewall features.

Best of luck to you.
