Re: Nooo! I failed! what now?

2000-08-02 Thread Vern Stitt

Hey Al,

It looks to me like you were studying from an older 407 exam prep book.
Cisco added quite a few WAN and Switch questions to the 407 test pool late
last year. Check the publisher's web site for errata and updates. I got a
large Chapter 11 update from the Sybex site for my 407 Study book that had a
great deal of WAN stuff in it that the original book did not cover. The
errata sheet also had fixes for the review questions that didn't seem quite
right.

Since it's now after July 31, 2000, you'll have to take the 507 CCNA 2.0
test. You did good to buy the two study books. I would also invest in a
Boson practice test.

even close..
I scored 617.

Does anyone have any tips for me to pass the test..I am rescheduled in one

You're probably both right, but it's also possible to get a drivers license
without any driving practise. However, I wouldn't be in the same car with
anyone that did.

You're right. The test you really need hands-on is CIT and FR/S. And much
more hands-on ( I mean tons of time playing with routers/switches ) is
CCIE

I have to disagree with you here Ole. I took my CCNA without hardly ever
touching a router. After passing my CCNA I realized that you really didn't
need any hands on router experience. The test can be passed easily without
any hands on experience. I will say though that the more hands on you have
the easier it will be. The CCNA test is designed more to validate that you
know all the concepts well. I passed my test by just reading Cisco Press
books. I didn't do great, but a pass is a pass. The biggest thing to know
on the CCNA exam is the OSI, you need to understand that fully. Looking at
the scores below shows me that more studying, reading and understanding
needs to be concentrated. WAN, Security and routing don't really have much
to do with hands on. I don't know, I just disagree that you need a lot of
hands on to pass a CCNA. It wasn't designed for that purpose.

You did not know enough about the material to pass the test.

I do not know what you have used to study, but here is what I would do:

1) Read the material until you can answer the study questions 100% correct.
2) Get another study guide (two or more are always better than only one).
3) Practise the examples/exercises on a Cisco Router.
4) Search for information about topics you do not fully understand.
5) Ask this group about topics you do not fully understand.
6) Buy a BOSON test exam before you take the real one.

If you are rescheduled, I believe it's for the new CCNA 2.0 (640-507) since
the old one had it's last day yesterday. If that's the case, you should make
sure to get a study guide for that one.

I can recommend Todd Lammle's new CCNA 2.0 Study Guide together with the
official ICND book from CiscoPress.

A LOT OF HANDS ON are very important.

2000-07-31 Thread Oz

hey no big deal look at it as $100 invested into the future ..
No one said the tests will be easy ( sure few have but many know better)
What's the big rush if you pass this week next week or in 10 weeks what
is the most important fact about passing.. ?
Some silly letters after your name or a strong basic foundation to build
more knowledge on.
Me thinks the latter is more important.
Go get yourself a router to play and you will pass the ios portion and
learn some troubleshooting . The more I play with this stuff the more FOR ME
I realize that there is NO book in the world going to teach me all of this
only just supplement knowledge at best.
AN important factor maybe for you to understand why you did not pass .
Maybe look at alternate learning methods , maybe you may have the same
problem as me read but can't remember so I do it then I remember.
Hmm let me re-phrase that I do remember by reading but I remember more by
doing ..
I have an app lying around somewhere that helps you define which part of
your brain you use during the learning process.
I will dig it out and throw it on my web site for you.
Don;t let this be a problem it's just a fumble in the game the key is to
learn from the mistake and go forward .
Thats why we have our eyes in the front of our head.
A mistake only retains it's status by repetition.

.. and I just realized - you really haven't re-scheduled 407 in a week
and a half because today is the last day for the test.

You may be booked (probably) for the 507 - CCNA 2.0 - which by all accounts
is much different.

You may want to think twice and find out what's different before taking your
second try at it.
Is there a reason to rush it now that you have to take the version 2.0
exam??

I missed it also, and that puts us both in the same boat.
The 407 was CCNA 1 and now we have to study for the 507 or CCNA 2.
Not exactly sure what the differences are but from what I understand
it's more into VLANs.
For router practice go to http://www.r1r2.com
Currently, the router labs are free. The username "freelab" and
password "frlb"

I also have some great study links on the Ciscobot
http://www.ciscobot.com Subnet training etc.

I think it may be best to put it out a little longer.
You should be able to keep moving it back.

Re: Nooo! I failed! what now?

2000-07-31 Thread Kevin Wigle

Not getting "personal" here but you do have some pretty low scores in
there.

Only you know how much self study you put in, at this point I would only
ask - how did you verify that what you studied matched the requirements?

There could be discussions galore on "practice" exams but I think they're a
great tool to show you where you're weak.

However, you've seen the exam once and your score indicates where you're
weak. A week and a half to go might not be enough - but then you're trying
to beat the 31 July deadline aren't you :-)

I would get at least one exam from Boson. For $39, it's cheap.

Re: Nooo! I failed! what now?

2000-07-31 Thread vlan 2

Al,

You are now in a very powerful position, you HAVE ALREADY SEEN THE TEST!
This is practically legalized cheating! I and many others have taken tests
we knew we couldn't pass because we wanted a "sneak peak".

Here's a tip: don't memorize, know it like you invented it. In your books,
read each paragraph and write the important concepts in the margin. When
you are alone, stand up and pretend you are teaching a class, speak out loud
the various concepts from start to finish. You should be able to address a
group of people and lecture at length without any notes.

You are smart enough, you just are not studying properly, from now on you
must dominate! This test is nothing, it is a speed bump, you can get past
it. Dedicate your life to it. You must obsess about internetworking.
Don't just study what you think is required for the test...Take it to the
limits. Be a big, ripping pitbull.

Babe Ruth is known as one of the best home run hitters in history. Few
people know that he also struck out a lot. Failure comes with the
terrirory, deal with it. It's time to suck it up and get medieval with
those books.

Strive not just to pass the test, strive to master the material well enough
that you could teach the class.

Other people do it, you will too.

You're the man!

Unfortunately, you don't seem to be strong in any one area. I'd suggest
rescheduling it approx 4 weeks away and hit it all over again.

Study:

OSI, WAN, IOS, NET Protocols, Routing, Security and LAN Switch a bit closer
and harder. Perhaps you should invest some money in an ICND course. That
course and the reading materials most certainly helped me.

Just Try Harder
