I haven't had a chance to play around with CiscoSecure yet, but it apparently requires an Oracle or Sybase installation to maintain RADIUS, TACACS+, and other information. It's designed for large environments with many thousands of entries. If you just need a simple TACACS+ or RADIUS server for a hundred accounts or so, there are plenty of free platforms out there. One does not need a database product to run CiscoSecure. Although, one does have an option to use one with CiscoSecure. It makes for a nice way to use an AS5x00 with an established NT environment as one can use an NT domain for validating. -Original Message- From: David [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Tuesday, June 06, 2000 9:43 PM To: Brad Ellis Cc: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: Cisco Secure ! Re: Cisco Secure !!!!!
FYI, I found the answer I was looking for. For Unix, you HAVE to use some kind of database backend. If you don't own a database product that it support (Sybase or Oracle), you have to use Sybase SQL Anywhere, a small Sybase compatible product that ships with CiscoSecure and supports no more then 5000 entries. The Cisco VPN client doesn't work with win2k; however, the company that wrote the client software for Cisco also puts out a product call safe-net (www.ire.com) that will work with win2k. It is almost identical to the Cisco client. I believe that it costs 75$ per seat. If your talking about the client that goes with the VPN 3000 then the Cisco software will not work with win2k as Rick pointed out. I just implemented this for a client using win2k and the solution is to use PPTP that is built into win2k instead of IPSEC. I created a white paper on this and it works perfectly. It's how I telnet to the routers and switches for this client from home:)... E-mail me off-line if your interested. RE: Cisco Secure VPN Client
The VPN client does not run on 2000. There is a third party company that does make a client for Win 2000 and Cisco, but I have never tried it and forget who it is. If you want to run an IPSEC tunnel from a win2000 machine to a Cisco device you have to do it through an l2tp tunnel. Set that up first and then run IPSEC over it. I believe Win2000 has all the components you need to do this on disk. -Original Message- From: VanHaaren, Nicole [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Thursday, January 11, 2001 5:45 PM To: '[EMAIL PROTECTED]' Cc: VanHaaren, Nicole Subject: Cisco Secure VPN Client Has anyone tried using this product? RE: Cisco Secure VPN Client
Hi all, If you want to run IPSEC tunnel on WIN2000 platform, there is a company that is called IRE which makes the VPN client software and they have the version for the WIN200 for the WINME and a bug free version. I have tried it and it work excellent. I'd guess at just having to delete the "=". I believe that normally specifies 'spare', so you wouldn't need another copy of the software. Please let me know if this turns out to be incorrect. Re: Cisco Secure VPN BETA exam
I took this exam on the 1st, Sept and all I've got to say is know "Security" The test covered everything from PIX, Cisco Secure, IOS Firewall Feature Set, IPSEC, IKE, CA, VPN client, and cisco tools for implementation. The test was the normal 3 hours and loaded with 243 questions, I must admit at one time I felt like simply walking out on the test. The same questions was asked over and over with slightly different twist. Overall, the test wasn't bad... just a lot of questions. Some were type in the command but not much. Good luck on this exam. I'll just say this test was designed for the folks that work on the *equipment* all the time. RE: Cisco Secure ACS [7:57775]
There is no default username and password. What you need to do is be on the server you installed it on and point your web browser to 127.0.0.1:2002 this will put you right into the administrators screen from there you add the usernames and passwords. To add an administrator so you can administer this box from across the network go to administrator control button then add a admin. That should do it. -Original Message- From: Ciaron Gogarty [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Wednesday, November 20, 2002 11:05 AM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Cisco Secure ACS [7:57775] Does anybody know the default username and password for a vanilla install of Cisco Secure ACS for Windows version 3.0?? I had this same issue a while back but at least you got yours to work, the max sessions I think was just coincidence. Because with our 3030 concentrators this did not work and we were told by TAC that Radius with Expiry with 2.6 ACS would not work but this was fixed in version 3.0. We upgraded to 3.0 and haven't looked back nice product CISCO way to go. Just for others interested so you do not travel the same hard road but FUNK Radius Steel belted did not support the changing of passwords because they did not know how to pass the right attirbutes back to the client through the cisco device. Exactly what capacity are you using the Radius box in? I use my radius box with a Cisco 3030 concentrator all users logging in via vpn are authenticated against the concentrator. There is nothing special you have to do on the radius box to allow for changing of passwords upon expiration, but on the concentrator you MUST make sure you are set to use Radius with Expiry. -Original Message- From: Tunde Kalejaiye [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Tuesday, December 03, 2002 11:38 AM To: Elijah Savage III; [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: Cisco Secure ACS [7:58101] hi, i upgraded my acs 2.6 to a 3.0 when i read ur mail in reference to changing user passwords. i cant seem to get this working...i cant find attributes 17 and 21 in the acs configuration. any info is highly appreciated. thanks - Original Message - From: "Elijah Savage III" To: Sent: Tuesday, November 26, 2002 8:52 PM Subject: RE: Cisco Secure ACS [7:58101] > I had this same issue a while back but at least you got yours to work, > the max sessions I think was just coincidence. Re: Cisco Secure VPN 642-511 [7:73919]
I'm for the check CCO part of your post. Visit http://www.cisco.com/en/US/learning/le3/le30/le13/learning_learning_path.html and you'll see all the Specialist certifications. They are not going anywhere - yet. The CCSP is still going strong: http://www.cisco.com/en/US/learning/le3/le2/le37/le54/learning_certification_type_home.html on the same page is an INFOSEC Professional link. Cisco has been granted rights to award this cert. It is NOT a Cisco cert. Which is cool because once it is awarded there is no need to recertify, it is permanent. Which is opposite to everything Cisco does - especially CCSP - to recert CCSP you have to take all 5 exams again. Hopefully by the time people get 3 years in CCSP Cisco will have a single recert exam like they do for CCIE/CCDP/CCNP I might do the security exams once to get the INFOSEC cert and then forget the recert on the Cisco stuff. If you get the CCSP you'll also have the credits to be a Firewall Spec, IDS Spec and a VPN Spec. It would make for a crowded business card. The specs are good for 2 years, the CCSP is good for 3 years. Which is also weird as you used the specs to get CCSP but they expire first. I'm sure there are "good" reasons for these certification oddities. The passing score is 751. The exam contains 60 questions and you have 75minutes to complete it. The exam does NOT let you go back to previous questions. Personally, I think this is one of the most rediculous exams that I have taken in sometime. I'veno hand-on experiences with PIX. I just read the documentation from Cisco website in preparing for the exam. The exam also asks about configuring ACS for windows NT (whocares about that)? It is very poorly written. Almost half of the exam concentrate on applications that are running on windows NT (against who cares) and not PIX related questions. If you ask me, I would tell you that a person like myself with no experience in PIX should NOT pass this exam. I would NOT recommend anyone to jump into Cisco CCNP security track unless Cisco completely revamps the whole security certification process. If Cisco keeps doing this, it will certainly dillute the value of the security certification track. Granted that I have been in the networking field for sometime; however, as I've said earlier, I should NOT pass the exam without the PIX hand-on experiences and just two days of preparation. It is NOT right. If anyone else has already taken this exam and have a different opinion, I would love to hearfrom you. RE: Cisco Secure PIX Firewall Advanced exam [7:10842]
Did you take the exam expecting to fail? It seems funny that Cisco did not include some of the more elusive PIX configuration problems. I agree that there is a problem with examinations that allow you to suceed without direct experience. But it is important to realise that these exams only certify a minimum standard of knowledge, which is highly desirable. This knowledge combined with experience leads to a more able network engineer who is able to solve problems in complex environments. The aquisition of knowledge is not a simple linear process and if you can use synthesis of your experiences to pass the exam then you have proved your ability to the exam level, but this does not equate to the ability to do a specific job. There are always a number of nuances to the use of the PIX and any other device that requires complex configuration that can only be gained by experience. Employers need to realise this fact. Isn't Cisco in the process of tightening up the exams?? It's a great product, well-designed for wireless authentication (ver 2.7). But if you don't need that and want to save $6k, you can set up IAS service on a Win2k server to do RADIUS authentication (maybe TACACS too, didn't check it, though). So far the password changing issue is really the only limitation of ACS that we found, but if you use it to intersect with the same database that your desktops login to (ADS for example) then your password changes will be taken care of. >From: "Chris Clark" >Reply-To: "Chris Clark" >To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] >Subject: Re: Cisco Secure ACS for NT/2000 [7:16318] >Date: Sat, 18 Aug 2001 22:53:29 -0400 > >Depends on what you are using it for. RE: Cisco Secure ACS for NT/2000 [7:16318]
Chris This is dredging into the distant past, but I encountered a similar password sync error with a Windows NT domain - the domain had "User must logon to change password" selected. Once this was changed, all was well - it also fixed a few Outlook/Exchange e-mail issues as well. Other than that, was using CiscoSecure/ACS with a 3640 to provide dial-in access and it was pretty sweet... Less problems than the previous NT RAS solution, faster connect speeds, and ACL's and auditing meant we could tidy up a few loose ends. Re: Cisco Secure PIX Firewall Advanced (9E1-571) [7:1481]
I would say that there is a fair amount of subject matter overlap, but that the CSPFA questions are significantly harder. The MCNS didn't have any type in questions and those are abundant on CSPFA. The MCNS questions I remember on the Pix and IOS Firewall were really pretty easy and more conceptual than anything. CSPFA tests the details more. Actually, Cisco has released a Win2K client. We downloaded it last week (sorry, I don't have the URL). We specifically wanted to use it to connect to our PIX. Then we found out that it requires PIX IOS v6 which is not "scheduled" for release until late this week. The Secure VPN Client will not work on a win2k box. I Have heard rumors that there is a beta version that will load on a 2k box. Does any body know of it or is there a work around for building a VPN to the router using IOS feature set. Re: Cisco Secure VPN Client for windows 2k [7:3427]
On the Cisco VPN Client download page itself, it states that v3 requires PIXv6: http://www.cisco.com/cgi-bin/tablebuild.pl/vpnclient-3des (linked from http://www.cisco.com/kobayashi/sw-center/ which requires CCO login): "Compatibility Information VPN 3000 Concentrator v3.0 - VPN Client v3.0 PIX Firewall v5.2+ - VPN 3000 Client v2.5 v6.0 - VPN Client v3.0" However, if you can get the Beta Win2k v2.5 client, it does support the PIX until PIXv6 is released (or get PIXv6 beta, but I wouldn't run in a production invironment, plus I've tried to get in on the Beta testing and can't). I haven't heard any dates/version, but IOS is planned to support the VPN Client as well. BTW: I hear PIXv6 is due out anytime now. Depending on how many boxes you need to support (if it was just a few netadmin boxes), you could purchase per-client licenses from IRE.com (OEM for the original "Cisco Secure VPN Client" v1.0 & v1.1). They've had a Win2K version out for some time (although I've not used it). If you need to support a large number, you're going to have to wait for the support to be added to IOS for the new "Unified Client" (previously known as Concentrator 3000 client), aka "Cisco VPN Client" (not "Cisco Secure VPN Client" which is just a Cisco-branded OEM from IRE). -- Jason Roysdon, CCNP+Security/CCDP, MCSE, CNA, Network+, A+ List email: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Homepage: http://jason.artoo.net/ ""Jay Dunn"" wrote in message [EMAIL PROTECTED]">news:[EMAIL PROTECTED]... > Actually, Cisco has released a Win2K client. RE: Cisco Secure ACS, AP350, and Orinoco AP1000 [7:33571]
Terry, I found some info on the following website: http://www.tuanistechnology.com/Orinoco/orinoco_ap1000.htm "Industry-Wide Interoperability and Compliance The ORiNOCO AP-1000 is interoperable with other manufacturers' high-speed IEEE 802.11b compliant systems. It's also compatible with Lucent's previous 2 Mbit/s and Turbo products." That sounds like it should at least be compatible with the Cisco A350s. If you follow the link http://www.tuanistechnology.com/pdf_files.htm, you can also download an install guide in .PDF-format. Hope this might help. RE: Cisco Secure service stops for no reason.. [7:75189]
ACS will show messages like that when it backs up the database. It pauses, or interupts services to perform the backup. Normally the services should pick right back up very quickly, but if it doesn't for some reason, you will have to manually restart services. The same thing happened once with the ACS system I administer. So you might want to check into if there is a correlation between when this happens and when backups occur. -Aaron Message Posted at: http://www.groupstudy.com/form/read.php?f=7&i=75206&t=75189 -- **Please support GroupStudy by purchasing from the GroupStudy Store: http://shop.groupstudy.com FAQ, list archives, and subscription info: http://www.groupstudy.com/list/cisco.html
Re: cisco secure ids - worth the cost? (formerly net ranger) [7:8038]
Hi! pro: - in a full cisco environment it's the best choice, shunning works very well! con: - price - signature updates only bimonthly - managing with CSPM is simple, but it's nothing compared to solutions like ISS Realsecure Workgroup Manager -- cU, Laszlo Csosza ""Jerry Deer"" wrote in message [EMAIL PROTECTED]">news:[EMAIL PROTECTED]... > Does anyone have any experience with the cisco secure ids intrusion > detection?
