RE: Comments on my Home Lab! [7:7108]

2001-06-04 Thread McCallum, Robert

I presume that the 8/16 is flash and memory. If it is then I would say that
you need a good few more routers. Although you do configure a token ring
switch in the lab I have heard that it is a very minimal config on this.
The other switch in use is the cat 5000, so there is no need to have any
more switches but plenty need to have at least another 4 routers. My lab
has 9 routers and on some of the Bootcamp labs that is just enough.

For lab scenarios buy the bootcamp labs there is quite simply no better!

Hello,

I just bought a home lab today. The equipment in my lab will be as
follows. Does anyone have any input as to the quality of this lab setup?
What would you expand on in the future. Has anyone taken the CCIE lab that
can tell me what they think of this lab and possible scenarios I should run
through with this lab. I will be receiving the items over the next few
days. The lab is as follows:

Cisco 2507 8/16 11.2

Cisco 2501 8/16 11.2

Cisco 4000 M+ 1 token ring,2 serial

Cisco 2924XL-EL

Cisco 5005 catalyst

1 12 port 100 BaseT,1 sup engine

back to back Cables

3 Console kits

Thank you,

JC

2001-06-04 Thread Maccubbin, Duncan

You will need to know ISDN very well and Voice. Frame Relay is big so you
will need a router with several serial ports, maybe a 2522 or something. You
do have a good start there. Keep in mind the lab changes all the time so no
one can really tell you for sure what will be on it. You may want to go for
a 3640 with Voice on it, although 1750s will work for less.

Think about another two serial interfaces on the 4000M.
A router that can be used as a terminal server is good. 2509/2511 are most
common.
I don't see any ISDN BRI interfaces. You'll want some. 2503
Depending on budget you might want to stay with the 2500 series or spring
for the newer 2600s. To do trunking on the Cat5K you'll need a router with a
100 Mbs port. 2620/2621 would do it.
To run the newer Enterprise code on the 2500s you will need 16 Flash or use
MZMaker. (Check archives for details.)

2001-06-04 Thread Daniel Cotts

The FastEthernet module only works on the 4500 & 4700s not on the 4000s.
Used prices are high.
He'll want multiple serial links on at least one box. The 4000 is a good
candidate. he can purchase another two port serial. I'm not sure if the 4000
supports the four port serial module.
He might want to purchase an Ethernet module for that box and trade it out
with the Token Ring as needed.
IMHO If you want a box in the 4000 series don't buy less than a 4500.

Kidding! Kidding! You need more routers, at least two with ISDN, and

2001-06-04 Thread Daniel Cotts

Most likely the archives are filled with similar threads. For a limited
budget the following four routers would make a good start:

2503 two serial, one Ethernet, one ISDN BRI S/T
2523 two fast serial, eight sync/async serial, one Token Ring, one ISDN BRI
S/T
2513, two serial, one Ethernet, one Token Ring
2509, two serial, one Ethernet, eight async serial.
It gives a good mix of interfaces.

Add an ISDN simulator later.
Switches when you are ready.
Then time to buy modular routers for FastEthernet, Voice, and etc.

Another cheap console server solution:

1) Buy a cheap x86 box on EBay (Pentium 60/75/whatever with say 32M RAM and
a 1G drive) for $30/50.
2) Purchase a Rocketport 8/16 port card on Ebay for $100/125.
3) Install Linux on it and get the drivers from the manufacturer.
4) Use Minicom to console into the routers.

Makes a great terminal server plus you can use it as a TFTP server and learn
something about Linux while you are at it...

Wrote a Bash script a year and half ago that provides menu driven access to
the routers (currently have a 2503, 1601, 4000 and door stop.. er um.. MGS+
along with a few Linux hosts running Zebra and Sparc 20...)

2001-06-04 Thread Donald Duck

With a 4000 ? LOL
You really are a Donald Duck !! You might as well ask him to find a GE
module ... haha... I'm trying to imagine how it would go if he had gone out
and buy a FE module and find out that he need to buy a 4500/4700 to be able
to use it...

2001-06-05 Thread Tim Medley

wow! Your power bill must be hugh! And your either single or have a
really upset wife

my wife has a spreadsheet detailing everything that I have purchased
for my home lab, price paid, average street price, and number of pairs
of shoes she could have bought with the same funds. I told her that
she'd be all the rage with a pair of "2500 cardboard box" clogs, or
console cables used as laces in her boots...
