Are your routers handling the voice traffic or are you simply splitting this
off at the CSU/DSU so that the router only sees data traffic?

Re: Help with Cisco 3745 configuration [7:69765]

2003-05-30 Thread Tom Martin
J B,

If you're familiar with Cisco routers, WAN troubleshooting (probably T1
or Frame) and QoS intricasies, then $5,500 is way too much. You could
set up the routers well within a single day, probably closer to 1/2 day.

If you're not familiar with Cisco routers, especially QoS since quality
problems may only arise under certain load conditions, then having an
outside company do it correctly may very well be worth it. I suppose it
all depends on how important uptime is to your company. If your company
stands to lose money if voice calls can't go through or if reliability
is an issue, pony up and pay the $5,500.

If you're up to the challenge, poke around Cisco's site. There's not
much detail on your environment, but you'll probably be interested in
PPP interleaving, FRF.11 or 12, LLQ and the various classification
techniques. Getting voice over your data circuit reliably requires that
you look at the path end-to-end, so you might also be interested in
looking at what layer 2 classification/prioritization is available on
your switches.

As far as IP connectivity, not much has changed in the last 2 years.
Assign valid addresses, pick a routing protocol and whalla!

That should be enough to get you started anyway. :)

I just talk to my manager and he's telling me that no CSU/DSU's were ordered
because this routers are suppose to be able to do everything.

So, No external CSU's splitting of the line; all is suppose to be configure
within the Cisco IOS.

2003-05-30 Thread Henry D.
hmm, let's not forget we're not routing just for the routing sake. There is
much
more then just setting up these few routers to make them talk to each other.
What will be routed data wise, what type of connectivity, applications,
topology, protocols, business requirements, etc, etc.
If you understand all that, and have some prior Cisco experience you might
be able to pull
it off without sepending too much time on the project. But if not, and your
skills
are lacking (whether router or design) then $5500 might be the way to go.
Unless
of course that fee doesn't cover the planning/investigaiton/design steps
then you might
be better off spending time on it yourself and re-learning/refreshing your
skills.

How much is your day's work actually worth ? :-) Add it all up and see
what's better for you
or your employer :-)

Thanks Henry,

That's exactly what I want to do. If I stopped doing Cisco is because my
job didn't required hands on.  I want to re-learn the skills and technology;
that is the only way to get back in track. Believe I would tell my manager
to let the phone company do the job, but if I do that tha'll be the end of
my cisco career within this company. I prefer to die trying than to quit
without a fight.
Thanks

Just by looking at your BOM (Bill of Materials) you will not be able to
connect to the Telco circuit without an External CSU/DSU. The serial
interfaces require this. If you would have purchased the VWIC-MFT-T1 then
you would be able to handle the both the voice and data internal to the box.

Layer 1 - nothing else works without out it

I just talk to my manager and he's telling me that no CSU/DSU's were ordered
because this routers are suppose to be able to do everything.

So, No external CSU's splitting of the line; all is suppose to be configure
within the Cisco IOS.
Thanks
JB
