I've taken some classes at ICTP. From what I gather, their CCIE

program works like this: you sign up for their CCIE program (which

Well, I agree. But the only thing I can do is try to remain optimistic. I
relocated to the Bay area just prior to 9/11, the market wasn't great to
begin with but just got worse...*hopefully* with no more major
catastrophes, consumer confidence and spending will grow...

As far as certs go, I am holding off getting some certs until I get the
required experience to back it up. I am gauging it as I go. It takes more
discipline this way but will be more rewarding in the long run and I will be
stronger for it I believe.

I think that's coming back to being more true again. A cert in a certain
product is not what the better IT managers look for, systems in general are
what they want. The proverbial they are looking for people that can do
everything from network, Unix, NT, sniffers, and mainframes, etc. to give
the higher paying jobs. Moral of the story Diversify.

I personally can't stand programs that promote nothing
more than meaningless paper certifications with no
real-world value. But you'll be surprised how many
people actually take out $10K + loans and buy into
this rat race. So on one hand, the IT community has given
its blessing towards certifications. On the other hand,
we have investors that are just waiting for the next
Certified Training Education Center to fund because
the revenue is much better than their shares at Wall Street.
Since its a free country, my own conclusion echoes
Darwin's theory...Survival of the Fittest.

ONe would hope that would be factored in. The high cost of living here,
still doesn't automatically raise salaries I am afraid. The bootcamps
eventually lower everyone's salary since they are churning out armies of
'qualified' people, that look somewhat the same on paper to many
recruiters.

At the moment there seem to be NO jobs for networking in the SF Bay area.
I
have 5+ years experience, consulting exp, network design, security, etc.
I
am currently teaching a Cisco class as well. Although I have made a lot
more when the economy was better, I would LOVE to interview for a 50k job
at
the moment!

RE: CISCO INTERNSHIP.....CCIE..... [7:36091]

2002-02-21 Thread Sean Knox

I've taken some classes at ICTP. From what I gather, their CCIE intern
program works like this: you sign up for their CCIE program (which is not
cheap I should add) and when you pass your CCIE written/lab (I vaguely
remember that the CCIE written pass is all you need), you can work as a
subcontractor for ICTP. You make substantially less money than a CCIE is
worth, (I believe around $50,000, don't quote me on that) but for those
with little or no experience (i.e., people enrolling in this program), it
works out really well. Hopefully Mr. Lee could explain the program more in
detail.

A CCNA makes more than 50k. And you wouldn't have to pay your company to
work for them and get training. Most companies pay you and pay for your

Well in the good old days of the economy, I made more than that even before
becoming a CCNA. I would never settle for 50k, even in this econ.,
especially as a CCIE. Plus, a CCIE IMO should already have exp., and lots
of it. Otherwise it defeats the purpose of becoming a CCIE - cisco
certified internet EXPERT!

Here is what I don't understand: Jason states that his company is
looking(note) for people while Sean mentions that you do have to actually
sign up(note) for their program which he adds is not cheap??

So basically, looks like people will first have to shell out this huge
dough out of their pocket to get an intership thru this company.

Re: CISCO INTERNSHIP.....CCIE..... [7:36091]

2002-02-21 Thread Marc Maxwell

I would be curious to know what type of contractual obligation is involved
here. I would be willing to look at *something*, as long as it wasn't too
binding (yeah right). And I *haven't* seen companies pay for training, at
least not this (the good kind, that advances your career). Many if not most
companies make it clear that they want you to stay whereever you are at.

That's right. A CCNA could potentially make more than $50K (with skills
though)

Here is what I don't understand: Jason states that his company is
looking(note) for people while Sean mentions that you do have to actually
sign up(note) for their program which he adds is not cheap??

So basically, looks like people will first have to shell out this huge
dough out of their pocket to get an intership thru this company.

2002-02-21 Thread Marc Maxwell

ONe would hope that would be factored in. The high cost of living here,
still doesn't automatically raise salaries I am afraid. The bootcamps
eventually lower everyone's salary since they are churning out armies of
'qualified' people, that look somewhat the same on paper to many recruiters.

At the moment there seem to be NO jobs for networking in the SF Bay area. I
have 5+ years experience, consulting exp, network design, security, etc. I
am currently teaching a Cisco class as well. Although I have made a lot
more when the economy was better, I would LOVE to interview for a 50k job at
the moment!

Desperately yours,

RE: CISCO INTERNSHIP.....CCIE..... [7:36091]

2002-02-21 Thread Puckette, Larry (TIFPC)

The ole keep 'em uneducated and underpaid method I agree that is a
typical corporate personnel practice, but not MY corporation. We get decent
training( my latest 2 classes were for Checkpoint firewalls) and a lot of
responsibilities, but still no pay. The 'typical behavior' represented here
is 'the job market is weak, so get all you can for as little as possible,
ethics be damned'.. The point being that the grass isn't necessarily
greener just because training is decent. Bigger headaches and longer days
that come with raising the responsibility bar pretty well balances out the
advantage of getting good training classes. Good training will only be to a
networker's advantage if the job market strengthens again. And with all the
boot camps and ITTs of the world flooding that market, who knows if that
will happen anytime soon.

Just my 2 cents

Re: CISCO INTERNSHIP.....CCIE..... [7:36091]

2002-02-21 Thread Leslie McIntosh

Marc,

I would think that with the Market being soft $50k for
ONLY CCNA would be max. I have my CCNA and fit the
bill, but I also have CNE5, A+, Network+ and a couple
others w/ 6 years IT exp. I would think CCNP with
minimal exp could bring 50k pretty easilly. As far as
training, I have been hearing promises of training for
the past year at my present company I went so far
as to request time off and pay for it myself and got
shot down... so I have been buy Routers on eBay and
have my own 2500 serives lab. You can pickup the 2500
series routers very reasonable right now, so you might
consider investing in equipment and books, test
software and self-study for the CCNA. Then you will
be ahead for the next exam because you will already
have some of the equipment for the CCNP. I prefer the
www.selftestsoftware.com tests. The test for CCNA is
excellent, and Cisco recommended testing software.

Les

Re: CISCO INTERNSHIP.....CCIE..... [7:36091]

2002-02-21 Thread Mike Sweeney

I've sat through the dog and pony show..

short version:

you sign up for the complete package of training..
you pay it up front.. something around 30-40K .. and they offer a convient
loan package through FannieMay..
you sign a contract where X dollars (roughly half)are *forgiven* on
completion of course work AND you promise to teach there for 1-2 years.

No written promise of hours per week.. just that you *should* get 17-30
hours a week at a pitance of a salary.. they run 7 days a week so kiss off
your weekends

I dont have all the exact details in front of me and in truth it's been
about a year since I heard all this so it may have changed some. I will say
that I have heard from others that it's still pretty much the same but take
it at 2nd hand talk..

I decided that it was not a choice for myself.. my opinion only.

In MA we have a high cost of living, so maybe that explains it.

I would have to assume that your ccna candidates
are paid well then..Most places in the midwest
pay ccnp people about 60K or so...as far as training
I have not been seeing many people in the last few
  classes I have attended.

Well in the good old days of the economy, I made more than that even
before
becoming a CCNA. I would never settle for 50k, even in this econ.,
especially as a CCIE. Plus, a CCIE IMO should already have exp., and
lots
of it. Otherwise it defeats the purpose of becoming a CCIE - cisco
  certified internet EXPERT!

A CCNA with little or no experience? Hardly. He's lucky to even land a
job
right now. I think this intern program is aimed at people new to the
  field.

A CCNA makes more than 50k. And you wouldn't have to pay your company
to
work for them and get training. Most companies pay you and pay for
your
   training.

I've taken some classes at ICTP. From what I gather, their CCIE
intern
program works like this: you sign up for their CCIE program (which
is
  not
cheap I should add) and when you pass your CCIE written/lab (I
vaguely
remember that the CCIE written pass is all you need), you can work
as
a
subcontractor for ICTP. You make substantially less money than a
CCIE
  is
worth, (I believe around $50,000, don't quote me on that) but for
  those
with little or no experience (i.e., people enrolling in this
program),
  it
works out really well. Hopefully Mr. Lee could explain the program
more
  in
detail.
