Stus-List Isotemp hot water heater

2014-02-26 Thread Tom Anderson
Dennis,
THANK YOU for the link to the Isotemp. Upon your reccomondation and a review
in Practical Sailor I plan to but one to replace my Raritan that rusted thru a
couple of years ago. By the way, right now it is cheaper to buy indirect thru
Isotemp than Defender - Go figure! Also, the Isotemp I think will fit more
easily in the sail locker than any other model. Still have to do some
measuring before ordering.

Guess I can't help but notice the incidence of rusted out water heaters
mentioned here. Some brands don't use stainless. Hence the shorter
service lives.

For me, stainless tank. Period. The new Isotemp SPA series water heaters
keep the stainless tank but switch to a polypropelene exterior. $450 for
the 4 gallon model. Well worth the $200 difference over the Kuuma and
better materials than some well known brands in my opinion. Every time I
"cheap" it, I end up wishing I hadn't. It's a lesson we sailors never seem
to learn.

2014-02-26 Thread Dave Godwin
Tom,

I installed (mostly…) an Isotemp Slim 20 water heater in my boat. Very nice
item and it allowed me to change to location of the water heater. I don’t know
what the locker space on a 32 is like but I was able to make a mockup of the
dimensions to check before buying.

Sooo, there I was, in Facebook, all ready to vote for Joel and then I notice
that there’s another local C&C in the race. A nice looking 37 no less!

Now I have a voting dilemma. Is this a “vote early, vote often” kinda thing?

Good luck to both of you on a very, very fun race and great destination!

Stus-List a source for Si-tex radar domes?

2014-02-26 Thread Eric Frank
I have been trying to locate a small radar dome that is compatible with my
Standard Horizon CP300i chartplotter. It is a nuisance to run below to look at
the radar screen, so it would be great to have the display on the chartplotter
at the helm. The CP300i is compatible with the Si-tex radars, but Si-Tex has
stopped making them and the dealers I have contacted have no more in stock.
Fred Street, of this list-serve, tried hard to locate one for me, but was
unsuccessful. Just thought someone else on this list might know where I could
locate one, even used. Ebay has them but at double the list price. 2.2
boat-bucks for a very low-end radar dome seems excessive!

You might try a couple of the search engines that look at local classifieds
and craigslists. yakaz.com, claz, org, etc. You might turn up a unit that

I have a homemade bow roller on a 29 which has worked out well for the past 6
years. I keep a 22lb delta on it. I can send you more details if you are
interested, but it is basically an Al plate with some standard rollers bolted
on. See photos of it at:

Thanks Dave,

I bookmarked your refit site! What a great inspiring resource!

Thanks, Lee

PS Are you Wally's little brother?

I installed (mostlyŠ)
an Isotemp Slim 20 water heater in my boat. Very
nice item and it allowed me to change to
location of the water heater. I don't know what
the locker space on a 32 is like but I was able
to make a mockup of the dimensions to check
before buying.

Re: Stus-List Isotemp hot water heater (35-1 install)

2014-02-26 Thread Dennis Cheuvront
That's what I like about the Isotemps. The flexible mounting options.

For Touche', a 35-1, I'm thinking about installing a 4 gal SPA model in the
starboard cockpit locker under the shelf. That's a space that's
underutilized now.

It should be an easy install. Just bolt the bracket under the shelf and
hook it up. Hose runs will be short.

Be interested in what other 35-1 owners think.

Re: Stus-List Isotemp hot water heater (35-1 install)

2014-02-26 Thread dwight
Dennis

I had difficulty getting the coolant to flow uphill from the engine when my
tank was mounted high just suspended from the bottom of the shelf in the
cockpit locker (port side on the MKII) I think because of airlocks. I
changed the location of the tank to lower down in engine space and towards
center line where the inlet and outlet on the tank for the engine coolant
was more or less in the same plane that those lines exited the engine.
Seems to work better now and the tank is not too much in the way of getting
down into that space and the 10 gal of water is low and closer to center
line. It is mounted on yolks that I fashioned from treated lumber and
attached to the surrounding structure with stainless wood screws.

~5 years ago Ox's ol' Onan waterlift muffler rusted out. I replaced it with
a (Vetus?) fiberglass unit and had to replace the exhaust riser in the process.
Being thrifty, I went with Home Depot 1.25" galvanized pipe and a wrap of
asbestos tape.

Well, five years later (last week), Ox's exhaust riser collapsed. FWIW, most
of the disintegration was toward the exhaust manifold. I'm thinking of staying
with cheap galvanized pipe but this time painting it with a high-temperature
paint inside and out. Opinions or predictions?

P.S. The waterlift muffler is fine.

pleased but it has all been armchair sailing. Eventually I’ll load Active
Captain but I’m not sure how useful it will be in Canada

The problem with an expensive helm mounted chart plotter is that it'll be old
news in a few years. I'm not keen on spending ~$1500 or more on a chart plotter
that will be "old tech" a few years from now. The iPad does so much more than
navigation and is half the price. Sure, you can't read it easily in sunlight
and it's not waterproof .. I can buy two iPads for the price of a raymarine
plotter though. And I can take the iPad home and do all sorts of other things
with it (primarily reading sailing magazines with Zinio) but I digress...

I'de like to have a plotter, or some kind of multi-display unit at the helm but
the prices on them aren't justified in my opinion. I am making the same thing
using OpenCPN, a laptop and likely the Standard Horizon GX2200 for GPS and AIS
info for the laptop. I already have the laptop, OpenCPN is free (and good!) so
I'll only be spending the $350 on the AIS/GPS capable VHF radio vs $1500
for the same functionality at the helm? I can't justify that.

If the technology was more modular, ie; the multidisplay had proper buttons and
was really *JUST* a display and interface I'de be more interested. $1500 is a
lot to spend on what is essentially a touch screen monitor .. except it's not
is it? It's a raymarine/garmin/sh whizbang that isn't upgradable and will
essentially suck compared to the new stuff in 5 years. Oh yeah, and charts are
really expensive too. I happily paid $50 for navionics with charts for all of
North America!!! Charts that get updated! Give me a waterproof, sun viewable
iPad type device that uses open protocols that i can mount at the helm and I'de
gladly spend $1500 on it. All I need is a display and an interface (buttons and
touch, but don't take my buttons away). A computer is a computer is a
computer

There are nice plotters that I would like to have, it's just a question of
value for the money. My boat bucks are needed elsewhere.

Use black iron pipe. Zinc gives off nasty fumes the first few hours that are
poisonous. There is actually something like "welder's flue" you get from
breathing it. I usually plan on getting 4 years or so out of the pipe before I

~5 years ago Ox's ol' Onan waterlift muffler rusted out. I replaced it with a
(Vetus?) fiberglass unit and had to replace the exhaust riser in the process.
Being thrifty, I went with Home Depot 1.25" galvanized pipe and a wrap of
asbestos tape.

Well, five years later (last week), Ox's exhaust riser collapsed. FWIW, most of
the disintegration was toward the exhaust manifold. I'm thinking of staying
with cheap galvanized pipe but this time painting it with a high-temperature
paint inside and out. Opinions or predictions?

P.S. The waterlift muffler is fine.

I generally am not out that long, but my buddy with a 36 foot motorsailer has
this routine: he uses Joy detergent and has a salt water pump (inside and out,
depending on weather and location) and wets down, lathers up, rinses with salt
and follows with a fresh water rinse. He has cruised for many years and spent a
year aboard a while back.

  Hi All,

I only just realized that there was a layout available for the Landfall 38
that had a U-shaped galley, more interior woodwork and most impressively, a
separate shower. I've been discussing our needs with the admiral and we're in
agreement on the requirement for a separate shower so the Landfall has now
captured our attention. Looking at boats on yachtworld it appears that only LFs
made after 82 had the separate shower, is that true or was it a layout that was
always available?

Our 32 doesn't have a shower and the head is tiny. I couldn't really imagine
taking a shower in there at all. Showers are probably a point of interest when
you're swimming in salt water every day??? Seems that the LF also carries over
100 gallons of fresh water .. having never showered on a boat I don't know if
this is enough for a rinse off every day? How often are people showering with
fresh water when away in remote anchorages in the Caribbean? Or other warm
climates? I have no experience here.

I also wanted to ask the owners of the LF 38s which layout you have and what
you like about it, and what you don't like about it? Have you done much long
term cruising or living aboard? Wally, I've read most of your articles and I
know you installed the U-shaped galley, I guess I assumed all Landfalls were
that way.

The landfalls are a good value. I laid out a bunch of options in the "when to
go cruising" thread and one of them is certainly taking our boat up to Georgian
Bay and keeping it there. A Landfall would serve well on Georgian Bay as well
as being enough boat to do some long term cruising on. We haven't yet figured
out how we're going to take off forever so it looks like that plan will have to
wait a while. In the short term however, moving our boat to Georgian Bay is
looking like a win/win in the short term.

Steve,

You'd need a tranny, new fuel tank, lines and filter, new prop, exhaust,
possibly a new shaft ... It would probably fit, but a 2GM is not
overpowering for a 32. It also probably came out of a boat with no hour
meter, but even 4,000 is OK if it were maintained. I'd take that 6-10 k
and put it towards the Landfall, but that's just my opinion.

I have a small hurth tranny you can put on there.

That engine looks very clean.Perhaps ask for receipts in terms of what

Considering you get a spare alternator, I would call it a good deal. Don't

  Steve,

I'm not sure about the layout of a C&C 32 but the Pearson 32 has an easy
shower layout such that the entire head spans the beam of the boat just forward
of the mast. This provides sufficient room to move. It even has a track for a
curtain attached to the ceiling. With a curtain you prevent wetting down the
toilet and toilet paper. The floor pan drains to the bildge.

Bay is looking like a win/win in the short term.

I went from 1.5" to 2" exhaust dues to increase in HP. But going down in HP
you can keep the exhaust.

Slightly oversized engine mounts will take care of vibrations. Basically

Blair,

most likely, no. You can use the 78s and other similar (e.g. Etrex Legend) as a
GPS sensor, but only (usually) with Garmin s/w and only if you can connect it
with via USB (with appropriate drivers present).

You might be able to connect the 78s to the Galaxy (using USB2Go cable), but I
suspect that the drivers won’t be there.

You probably want to have a GPS sensor that you can connect via Bluetooth.

Re: Stus-List Isotemp hot water heater (35-1 install)

2014-02-26 Thread Wally Bryant

FWIW I learned a couple of things when installing my new hot water heater.

The most important was the hose size. I originally thought that I
should use a nice big hose to avoid creating a pressure problem. I was
thinking that a big hose would have less resistance and would allow
maximum coolant flow. So I ran 3/4" hose. I thought I was being smart,
because after moving the water heater amidships it was a long hose run
that went under the cabin sole. Well, the engine overheated every time
I tested it. So I talked with a trusted mechanic who said "Didn't I
tell you to use 3/8" hose when we talked about this last year? I even
told you where to get it locally! The water (coolant) pump doesn't
generate a lot of pressure."

Apparently the way my engine is designed, the water heater ports are set
up so that coolant can flow through the engine first, and if there's any
extra pressure it'll work its way to the water heater and back. Looking
at the service manual and exploded parts diagrams, it's true. I'd
actually looked really good at it before hooking things up, and it
didn't make a lot of sense to me at the time because it was clear that
there was a straight path through the engine and I couldn't see how
coolant would also get to the water heater if there was an easier path
back to the engine block.

Anyway, I ran 3/8" hose to the water heater. The cool thing is that my
dumb mistake worked out to the boat's benefit, because the OD of the
3/8" hose was less than 3/4" and I was able to work the smaller hose
inside the bigger hose, using the existing hose run that I'd already
drilled holes for and pulled. The big hose was wire reinforced Trident
exhaust hose, and I probably have the ultimate chafe protection on the
coolant hose to the water heater. That's fine, since it runs under the
cabin sole and through a few fiberglass elements.

Bottom line is that the mechanic was right. The top priority is to keep
the engine cool (duh) and enough coolant works through the little hose
to the water heater. For me it takes less than 1/2 hour to get it to
engine temps.

Regarding air locks, I have pushed the edge on that. I bought an
'auxiliary coolant tank', that can be mounted high, when doing this
project, just in case I needed it, but I didn't because through a divine
miracle the water tank ended up being about two inches below the top of
the coolant cap on the engine. (Of course that depends upon who's
sitting where, and if all the crud on the boat is managed to keep the
boat on her lines.) Nonetheless, I've had a few air locks, too, and
they will cause overheating. When installing the water tank, I made a
ball valve assembly near the engine that lets me turn off coolant to the
water heater and send it right back to the engine. I think I built
that when I was trying to figure out why the 3/4" hose wasn't working,
but really don't remember. Early Alzheimers. I have used the valve
assembly to troubleshoot overheating questions since then. It's nice
to be able to take the water heater out of the problem. To date,
overheating has been 1) broken belt (That's what I get for replacing a
perfectly fine belt) 2) fish sucked up into the water intake hose 3)
stupid mistake 4) stupid mistake 5) I don't remember, but it was
probably a stupid mistake.

This is good to know.
When I put the Nanni (Kubota) in mine, I thought they were joking with the
tiny little elbows I assumed were for water tank heating, but I could see no

don't remember now. But it heats my water up lickety split, it seems now

Yeah, but have you ever spent an afternoon in February walking naked
down a beach that's filled with pyrite?

I'm pretty sure the guys in Canada haven't done that. However, as for us
"southern" guys, I plead the fifth (The Glenlivet, that is).

Up here, you only do that once. There is an annual polar dip on New Year's Day
that'll freeze your nuggies. Not my idea of a stirling time.

I have the 2GM20F on our 30mkII. Works well for us, but I agree with
others, you would likely be under-powered with your extra wetted surface
and displacement on the 32.

As far as all else is concerned, I cringe plenty enough at the spelling on
this list, let's drop all this talk about prancing around necked ;)

Depends which samsung you have:

1) some have gps built in (my Galaxy Note 10.1 does).
2) some have (limited I believe) usb capability.

I have a hand held garmin 78 sc or 78 s I think it is called.

Could I use this as my GPS receiver in conjunction with a Samsung Galaxy and
navionics rather than a Garmin Glo or Bad Elf

For anyone with an Apple tablet but no GPS, take a look at bad-elf.com. A
reasonable solution.

And after working off and on for a couple of weeks to set up and learn the
iPad, I’m not a great fan either. I’ve been a windows person since version 3,
and am pretty comfortable navigating it. My Sony Android tablet is a lot easier
to deal with than my iPad – probably because I’m learning a new set of menus
and so on for the iPad from scratch. That’s why I would have gotten a
waterproof Samsung Galaxy had I not been given the iPad.

But the comment I actually wanted to make, Mike, is that the folks who run
Active Captain indicate the second highest number of users in the world log in
from Canada (they track the locations of folks who log in). The third highest
number are from France, and they indicate they have really complete information
on the French canal system. A recent entry mentioned the Active Captain data is
in the process of being incorporated into the software from 3 European
companies.

Log into Active Captain on your PC and take a look at the data available for
your home waters. That might tell you how valuable the information might be.
Then again, it is free, so the cost is right if you chose not to put it on the
tablet.

I am not an Apple fan although the Admiral has 2. An Ipad original and a new
Mini. Wifi only so no GPS.

For myself I bought a Sony Xperia tablet because it is waterproof to about
10’. Really only needs to be splash proof. I bought Navionics HD and so far I
am pleased but it has all been armchair sailing.

I'de like to have a plotter, or some kind of multi-display unit at the helm
but the prices on them aren't justified in my opinion. I am making the same
thing using OpenCPN, a laptop and likely the Standard Horizon GX2200 for GPS
and AIS info for the laptop. I already have the laptop, OpenCPN is free (and
good!) so I'll only be spending the $350 on the AIS/GPS capable VHF radio
vs $1500 for the same functionality at the helm? I can't justify that.

If the technology was more modular, ie; the multidisplay had proper buttons
and was really *JUST* a display and interface I'de be more interested. $1500 is
a lot to spend on what is essentially a touch screen monitor .. except it's not
All I
