Not a problem on the 35 MKII either, another good upgrade choice.

Is there really a need for 2 sinks on a 33 foot boat...close the valve and
be done with the worry

Just because the guy filling your tank at Costco was a manager, it clearly

Mike,

I have an aluminum tank from my boat that doesn't have an OPD valve on it.
No way to get it filled unless I replace the valve with the newer "safe"
variety. Never heard of problems with the tank material though.

The overflowing sink is a perennial problem on my boat. In any weather over

Was at Toronto Boat Show, just realized I did pick up a catalogue for Garhauer,

The plan in my little head right now is to 1) change out the halyards for all
synthetic, 2) try to pull new wire from the top of the mast and rig new
instruments, the old don't work anyways so I'm not losing anything even if I'm
unsuccessful, 3) check bushings/trade out sheaves after the mast comes down in
the fall.
Theres a lot of talk about self tailing winches, aftermarket or original
equipment? Eight Barient winches on ours, none are self tailing and all need
servicing, I see West Marine sells springs and pawls, I should get a couple of
sets for the inevitable loss, if needed I should be able to pick up bearings at
a local bearing shop?

Re: Stus-List 10 lb propane tank OPD

2015-02-21 Thread Chuck S via CnC-List
Hi Jake,
I have the same problem. An older aluminum propane tank w no OPD. Replacements
used to cost over $200.
In twelve years of ownership, I replaced the tank twice w $40 steel tanks from
camper supply houses. The bottom lip always rusted out, cause the tank sits in
a little water in my boat's enclosure. Last spring I found a good Worthington
10 lb aluminum tank on the web for around $120 and bought it.

I'd still like to get the old tank converted so I have a backup, but after so
many years it would need pressure testing and recertification. (Any pressure
vessels like diving tanks and propane tanks, need to be perodically
recertified.) The valve and recert may cost more than the cost of a brand new
tank, which are now $130.

Brad,

We had a lot of winches on Perception when we bought her needing servicing. I
took them all off one fall, brought them home and thoroughly cleaned all the
old grease out of them - many hours of soaking in Mineral spirits, and using a
stiff brush. All were fine after, and worked great! Subsequently I have reduced
the number of winches, and changed 2 to Andersons, as we have migrated to

The plan in my little head right now is to 1) change out the halyards for all

The OPD is "Overflow Protection Device". It prevents any kind of tank,
regardless of material or age, from being overfilled which could cause a
tank failure.

Mike,

I have an aluminum tank from my boat that doesn't have an OPD valve on it.
No way to get it filled unless I replace the valve with the newer "safe"
variety. Never heard of problems with the tank material though.

Hello all. I brought my 10lb aluminum tank to Costco Halifax today for a

to fill them any more because aluminum tanks are considered "commercial" and
are to be taxed accordingly which Costco is not set up to do at the pumps.
This sounds like a lot of BS to me. Has anyone else run into this?

Re: Stus-List Barient winches.

2015-02-21 Thread Chuck S via CnC-List
A small terry hand towel laid on deck is great to hold dirty parts and keep
them from sliding around. Another trick is to cut a hole in a shallow cardboard
box ( w 4" high sides) so it can be placed over the winch, to catch parts. I
find cardboard boxes for projects like this really save the deck too. On windy
days, you have to take other precautions though.

Mineral spirits or diesel fuel or Kerosene are good solvents for cleaning the
grease from winches. Stu's website has the entire Barient Catologue as well as
cleanng procedures, and the detailed drawings that help a great deal. All
downloadable.

I find after a good cleaning, and drying, oil the pawls and springs w 3 in 1
Oil and grease the gears using a small acid brush, sparingly according to
instructions. Next year, you can probably skip the heavy cleaning, just oil the
pawls, and add a little grease using the acid brush.

I keep a tube of grease, a bottle of 3 in 1 oil, small acid brushes and maybe a
plastic scraper in a ziplock sandwich bag, marked w sharpie, WINCHES, w my
spare parts.

Re: Stus-List CnC-List C&C 33 MKII

2015-02-21 Thread Burt Stratton via CnC-List
I just figured out what a self-tailing winch is! I always thought my jam cleats
made them self-tailing.

Yeah I am that much of a novice to sailing boats bigger than knockabouts. It
seems to me that they would be most useful when racing or single or short
handing. My assumption is that they remove the need for someone to keep
pressure on the sheet (or whatever you are winching) behind the winch thus
allowing a one hand operation (or one person operation on larger winches). Does
that remove the need for jam cleats behind the winches?

This is just for my knowledge. Based on the cost I have seen for new
self-tailing winches I have suddenly become satisfied with my non tailing
winches….for now.

My plan is to take them off the boat and bring them to my shop to clean and
lubricate them. I’m a pretty decent mechanic. May I assume that disassembling
them is a relatively simple process?

Re: Stus-List Barient winches.

2015-02-21 Thread Dennis C. via CnC-List
I have available the following:

1) two alloy Barient 26's (non-ST) for parts if any lister needs some.
Drums, pawls and springs NOT included. Basically gear base and bearings.

2) one pair of alloy Barlow 26's (non-ST). Some anodizing is chipped off
the base on each.

3) a pair of alloy Barient 22's (non-ST). These are in very good
condition. 5 bolt pattern on base. (Some 22's have 6)

4) One alloy Barient 28 (non-ST)

On the subject of winches, I replaced all of Touche's alloy winches with
stainless or chrome bronze for about $1100 off ebay and Craigslist. That
was two each Barlow 28's and 26's and a pair of Barient 22's.

I personally like Barient winches. While the newer Lewmars, etc. are nice,
the Barients seem to be well made. Clean them; lube them; use them.

Re: Stus-List Barient winches.

2015-02-21 Thread Ed Dooley via CnC-List
I use spray lithium grease on my Barient 10ST winches. It penetrates better
than a brush and lasts a long time (and is less messy).
There are many brands, including WD-40. I missed the original post, and I
imagine from one reply that the original poster is in Australia.
Lewmar, with many retailers around the world, including Oz, owns Barient. I
buy my Barient repair kits from Lewmar dealers.

A small terry hand towel laid on deck is great to hold dirty parts and keep
them from sliding around. Another trick is to cut a hole in a shallow
cardboard box ( w 4" high sides) so it can be placed over the winch, to
catch parts. I find cardboard boxes for projects like this really save the
deck too. On windy days, you have to take other precautions though.

Mineral spirits or diesel fuel or Kerosene are good solvents for cleaning
the grease from winches. Stu's website has the entire Barient Catologue as
well as cleanng procedures, and the detailed drawings that help a great
deal. All downloadable.

I find after a good cleaning, and drying, oil the pawls and springs w 3 in 1
Oil and grease the gears using a small acid brush, sparingly according to
instructions. Next year, you can probably skip the heavy cleaning, just oil
the pawls, and add a little grease using the acid brush.

I keep a tube of grease, a bottle of 3 in 1 oil, small acid brushes and
maybe a plastic scraper in a ziplock sandwich bag, marked w sharpie,
WINCHES, w my spare parts.

The only tricky bit is in not losing the pawls or springs.
A cloth fastened between the toe rail and lifeline may help.

Re: Stus-List Refilling 10 lb propane tank

Around here, it costs $25 or so to recertify a tank and replace the valve.
I think the aluminum one on the boat is close to original, it has been
recertified so many times that the stamps are getting blended.

I needed a line stripper for a Barient 24ST...looked all over the world for a
year. I broke down and called Allen Hutton in AUS. They have just about any
spare Barient part you could imagine...except a line stripper for a 24 ST!
So...he made one...perfect replacement, very pleasant to work with.
As for self tailers, look at Winchmate. When it makes it to the top of my
priority list, I'm buying a pair for my 32 primaries.

2015-02-21 Thread Joel Aronson via CnC-List
Burt,

This is the most helpful, non-judgmental group I have ever been a part of.
Ask away! With self tailers you do not need jam/cam cleats. It helps to
have one person tail and one grind to reduce slippage.

My Barients are pretty much idiot proof. No 2 gears are the same, so it
would be hard to put them back together incorrectly. If you are doing 2,
remove both drums but take them apart one at a time so you can look at the
dirty one when you reassemble the clean one.

Hi Joel,

Do they require it to be registered too?
Seriously, I got a Standard Horizon built-in with
DSC but never got around to obtaining the number for it.

In answer to the question, go with cheap is okay
in this case, since I'm guessing you already have an Icom for reliability.

I start to question some of these new SI
requirements for inshore racing, with keelboats.
Whatever happened to skipper accountability?
Pretty soon they will start qualifying crew as well. :)

2015-02-21 Thread Russ & Melody via CnC-List

Hi Burt,

My Barients are original non-sailing. I removed
the jam cleats years ago during a cockpit reno
and never got around to putting them back on. I
find after mostly trimming if I put on a couple
extra wraps (to maybe 5) and take in a bit more
for final trim the sheet stays put quite nicely.
The winch is designed for the wraps to ride up and lock into the top flange.
If I'm on the tack for some time I might throw on
a tugboat (bollard) hitch for piece o' mind.

http://www.animatedknots.com/lightermans/

Another option:
http://www.winchmate.com/

There is yet another inexpensive option that I
cannot find. A rubber-like ring with self tailing
locking ribs that fit over the top flange the
winch. It was made in Sweden or UK, popular in
the '80s... might be called grip mate or something like that.

Yeah I am that much of a novice to sailing boats
bigger than knockabouts. It seems to me that
they would be most useful when racing or single
or short handing. My assumption is that they
remove the need for someone to keep pressure on
the sheet (or whatever you are winching) behind
the winch thus allowing a one hand operation (or
one person operation on larger winches). Does
that remove the need for jam cleats behind the winches?

This is just for my knowledge. Based on the cost
I have seen for new self-tailing winches I have
suddenly become satisfied with my non tailing winches….for now.

My plan is to take them off the boat and bring
them to my shop to clean and lubricate them.
I’m a pretty decent mechanic. May I assume
that disassembling them is a relatively simple process?

Not the same thing.

I think you are talking about the blue rubber collars that go on the top
flange of smaller winches and purport to make then self-tailing - but
usually don't work too well. The brand name for those is WINCHERS.

WINCHMATE is a company in California that makes conversion kits that turn
larger Barient non-self-tailers into self-tailing winches.

I've had experience with Winchmate conversions on a friend's boat and they
work pretty well - though I will spend the extra few bucks to get the kit
with spring loaded jaws that adjust for varying line sizes. The kit to
convert my Barient 32s is about $600 per winch, but a similar sized Lewmar
or Harken winch is between $2k and $3k and a used Barient 32ST is a grand or
more, when you can find one.

I cut a hole in the bottom of a suitably large cardboard box and set it down
over the winch before starting disassembly. No parts jump overboard and if I
spill grease it stays in the box, not on the deck.

Re: Stus-List Refilling 10 lb propane tank

2015-02-21 Thread Rick Brass via CnC-List
Actually they are confusing a DOT tank ( vehicles like forklifts and marine)
with a recreational tank (BBQ grills and travel trailers). You would be
surprised at how many small warehouse and machine shop operations had
trouble getting tanks for forklifts filled when the rules for recreational
tanks went into effect.

Just try to find anyone who fills tanks for BBQ grills that actually
understands the rules. There is no point in trying to fill a boat tank
without an OPV.

Re: Stus-List Handheld VHF with DSC

2015-02-21 Thread Josh Muckley via CnC-List
I have one. I like it quite a bit. You might consider the Uniden Mystic
instead though. It is an older unit but it has most of the same features
AND it maps your GPS location. Not very good charts but better than flying
blind. The other models of VHFs have bluetooth which I think might be a
better trade off than gps without mapping.

Also bear in mind that the VHF registered with an MMSI will also referance
your boat name and as such using the DSC on another boat could cause
confusion during an emergency.

I mounted the cradle for my HX851 in the boat at the nav staion. I took
the cradle apart and added hardwire supply lines instead of the plug and
cigarette lighter that it comes with. The charger cradle is wired through
the on/off for the installed VHF. That way the charger only comes on when
the switch for the ships radio is on. It won't over charge and it won't
drain the battery when I'm not there.

The HX851 also has an optional AA battery adapter pack. Very handy.

Around here, it costs $25 or so to recertify a tank and replace the valve. I
think the aluminum one on the boat is close to original, it has been

I have an aluminum tank from my boat that doesn’t have an OPD valve on it.  No

Hello all. I brought my 10lb aluminum tank to Costco Halifax today for a
refill. The attendant did fill it but informed me that they are not supposed to
fill them any more because aluminum tanks are considered "commercial" and are
to be taxed accordingly which Costco is not set up to do at the pumps. This
sounds like a lot of BS to me. Has anyone else run into this?

Around here, it costs $25 or so to recertify a tank and replace the valve. I
think the aluminum one on the boat is close to original, it has been
recertified so many times that the stamps are getting blended.

Mike,

I have an aluminum tank from my boat that doesn’t have an OPD valve on it. No
way to get it filled unless I replace the valve with the newer “safe” variety.
Never heard of problems with the tank material though.

Hello all. I brought my 10lb aluminum tank to Costco Halifax today for a
refill. The attendant did fill it but informed me that they are not supposed to
fill them any more because aluminum tanks are considered "commercial" and are
to be taxed accordingly which Costco is not set up to do at the pumps. This
sounds like a lot of BS to me. Has anyone else run into this?

No one stocks exact replacements. You either have to get them made, or make
them yourself. The "loops" on the stock items are shorter for one thing, and
there is no way to match them up with the holes in your boat.

For those more challenging projects the Castrol Super Clean works well.
I think the product has changed over the years, may be a different company
making it now. I have a couple jugs from a few years ago. Serious stuff, cleans
neglected winches to squeaky clean and rinses with warm water.

http://www.canadiantire.ca/en/pdp/superclean-degreaser-refill-946-ml-0392964p.html#.VOkGMy6VCpo

No idea if the current product is the same as what I have.
Normal cautionary note here - wear gloves and don't breath the fumes.
It eats aluminum and pot metal, paint ...

Also, note that ball - roller - needle bearings are designed to roll. Some
of the new super lubricates are so slippery that things slide instead, which
may increase resistance and wear.

Stus-List Handheld VHF with GPS and DSC

2015-02-21 Thread Dennis C. via CnC-List
Dammit, Joel. Now you started something. I was perfectly happy with my
handheld VHF until you got me looking at the new ones.

Mentioned it to the Admiral. She kinda likes the idea. We started asking
ourselves why we would need a handheld VHF with GPS and DSC. We have DSC,
AIS, all that stuff in the fixed unit. The only time we use the handheld
is in the dinghy.

We came up with a few "justifications" for the upgrade. Like:

   - a health emergency while we were in the dinghy
   - attaching it to a throwable and tossing it to a MOB
   - keeping it clipped on the bowman in case he (me) goes overboard
   - we can sell the old one on eBay
   - we just want one

C'mon listers, why else would we pop for a new handheld VHF?

FYI, I'd probably buy the Standard Horizon HX870 for $210.

I have the Standard Horizon handheld and I consider it my 2nd most
important safety device ( my PFD in #1). I race in San Francisco Bay and I
want to be plucked out of that cold water as quickly as possible. I also
race offshore on a Cal 40 and again I want to be rescued quickly. I have
the radio registered with my C&C 29 by default (through MMSI registration
with Boat US. Then when I race on the Cal 40 I just login to Boat US and
change the details to show I am on the Cal. It takes me 5 minutes, and as
soon as I am onshore I set it back to my C&C. It's that easy.

I think everyone should have a handheld with DSC.
