Re: Stus-List 37 Plus Below-Deck Autopilot
Hi Josh, The fibreglass tube my rudder shaft passes through is continuous from the hull to the floor of the cockpit and so provides no place to mount an arm below deck. I like this arrangement as it results in no opening into the interior of the hull from the rudder tube below deck (except for a couple of grease fittings). Is you rudder tube cut below deck to allow a space to mount the arm? And so do you have a packing gland on the rudder shaft below deck now? Just curious. Ken H. Re: Stus-List 37 Plus Below-Deck Autopilot
That’s a standard Edson autopilot tiller arm; it’s the preferred way of attaching the ram to the rudder post below-decks, assuming you’ve got enough room to do that. Some of our CCs, mine included, won’t allow that luxury, so the pilot’s ram needs to be attached (preferably to a reinforcement plate) directly to the quadrant. If you want to go the BG route, you’ll probably want to go with Simrad for the pilot. Simrad is the parent company for BG (as well as Lowrance). Raymarine is still, to my mind, a good option for both instruments, plotters and autopilots; but if there’s room for it I’d definitely consider going with an Octopus hydraulic linear drive over a comparable Raymarine mechanical drive, for its power and longevity. Re: Stus-List 37 Plus Below-Deck Autopilot
The means of access is through the aft berth. If you perform the install with the boat in the water you'll have to use something like a pipe cutter since the rudder shaft will be in the way. I have heard of being able to attach a strong rope to the rudder bail and lowering the rudder out of, or nearly out of, the boat which would facilitate making the required cuts also. I would consider doing all of the glass work and framing now and when the boat is hauled finish the project by removing the rudder, making the required cuts and then reinstalling the rudder. Re: Stus-List 37 Plus Below-Deck Autopilot
Ken, Before I get beat up too bad about the pros and cone of my arrangement I'll reenforce the fact that I had nothing to do with the design or implementation. Additionally I have had little or no trouble with the system and/or the function of the boat. Now that the disclaimer is out of the way, yes the rudder sleeve does appear to have been cut. I've eye balled the lowest part of this cut to be above the waterline. In fact the most prominent landmark is the stern most transom tip which the cut us also above. Yes, if transom gets submerged then water does have the ability to come in the boat between the sleeve and the rudder shaft. There is no stuffing box. Likewise water on the deck does have the ability to get down the sleeve and enter the boat. The passages between the post and sleeve are tight enough that I sleep soundly knowing that the boat will be floating tomorrow. What little water could get in would be easily removed by the bilge pump. I have also imagined that some rigidity was lost between the deck and the hull. However, I'm not sure how I would detect this. Whoever installed it this way must have also considered the structural nature because they cut a piece of 3/4 plywood to fit the triangle formed between the diagonal section of transom and the hull aft of the rudder tube. It was encapsulated and glassed in place. Yep, it might have weekend the boat. Yep, it might not be the best way to do it. Yep, I might not have done it that way either. Here's the great thing about this setup. It uses a volume of space which I imagine goes completely unused in most 37+s due to the lack of accessibility. In addition to being kept safe, the hydraulic drive is also kept dry and out of the way. And finally, mounting the bronze arm on the rudder shaft acts as a retainer so that in the event that the quadrant and the roller bolt broke or came loose the rudder wouldn't have a chance to fall out of the boat. The ONLY problem we've had is filling the drive unit. The hydraulic drive is a standard simrad HDP2000...(IIRC) and the reservoir is simply a void machined into part of the unit. The outer dimensions are roughly 4x5x1 inch so I imaging the inner dimensions are probably capable of holding about 4oz of fluid. Over time, a small leak at the shaft allows the fluid to leak out so periodic filling is required. Getting to the fill hole (which is simply a machine screw) is a challenge. Getting oil in the hole is a bigger challenge. I've had to fill it once in 3 years of ownership. The simrad unit is old but pretty reliable. It is also easily configured on the fly to steer the boat 3 different ways. To the wind, to the compass, and to the GPS. All of which I've used about equally. If I get a chance I'll send some more pics. Well unfortunately my problem is not a loose wire...I did the test on the motor, it works fine; problem is with the control head but only for autopilot, the main function of the unit, but I like that it still gives a correct digital heading and a measure of rudder angle so I won't rush the control head in for repair, probably do that this winter, I lived without autosteering before so that's what I have til next summer, no autosteering, unless I can find a deal on a control head...I found the service manual here and it explained how to take apart and test, maybe others here could use the reference too: http://www.ganssle.com/jack/st4000.pdf Dwight Veinot CC 35 MKII, *Alianna* Head of St. Margaret's Bay, NS d.ve...@bellaliant.net On Mon, Jul 6, 2015 at 8:27 PM, Jim Watts via CnC-List cnc-list@cnc-list.com wrote: The connectors can get loose on the back of the control head, as well. Not sure what boat you are talking about, but I got disgusted with mine probably 15 years ago, and scrapped the whole boom; It had a SS slide in the aluminum which galled and was just really poorly designed compared to today's products. Very close to getting my ham rig running on Paws. This was a zero budget project with parts accumulated over the past few years. Ended up with an Icom 706 that that I bought used from a co-worker, a narrow pass filter from a swap meet and a KISS counterpoise which I have high hopes for. Finally added an AH-4 tuner which they are giving away right now. Will rig a temporary longwire antenna which I will make permanent over the winter if successful. Stus-List BG Zeus2
Hi Gary, I have the 7 inch Zeus 2, and the Triton wind and depth package + one extra Triton gauge. I have had it for a full year now and It's a fantastic system. The gauges are very bright and easy to read, I have all the metrics I can ask for: VMG on waypoint / VMG on wind, Sailsteer automatically optimized laylines, sailing time to waypoint, sailing time to destination, wind trends / shifts graphs , a really nice wind rose with both apparent and true wind, etc, etc. It's all standard NMEA 2000 (And has Ethernet and NMEA 0183 connections as well) has a meaning easy plug-in with any NMEA 2000 compliant gauge / sensor. It can integrate: Autopilot, video cameras, engine monitoring stuff, radar, AIS, side / forward scan sonar, even integrates with the NMEA 2000 compliant Fusion stereo head units and XM (radio and weather) for full control of the audio at the helm, can be controlled from an Ipad / Android tablet via wifi, etc, etc. The touch screen is responsive while wearing gloves and now you can connect it to a wifi adapter for off the air updates /possible new apps. PM me if you want more details on the install and stuff. -Francois Rivard 1990 34+ Take Five Lake Lanier, GA - Subject: Stus-List BG Zeus2 - Message-ID: - cabgkxplflqu3dtxwcbmlg16bo0cgsd1omrpz7hxi5s0--b6...@mail.gmail.com - Content-Type: text/plain; charset=utf-8 - I just bought a 1990 37 Plus which is in need of new instrumentation. Re: Stus-List FW: Boom out haul slide question
Barbara We use no slug for main clew. Noticed there was none this spring on our older main and switched to the Velcro strap suggestion. Turns out this is exactly the arrangement we also had on the newer main. Works very well. The only downside was that I spent $25 on a new spectra Velcro boom strap and then discovered I already had one that was in the bag with the other main. I was concerned that the clew would move off to the side if not centered by a slug but that is not the case. Re: Stus-List FW: Boom out haul slide question
Barbara I did the basically the same boom modification that Bill mentions to Honey back in 1998/99. The mast person can adjust the mainsail out haul by hand without using the reefing winch. Stop by the boat (berthed at SYC) next time you are in Savannah and take a look. the original out haul arrangement stunk to say the least. Besides RigRite, does anyone know where I could source a new boom outbaul slide? Try The Yacht Shop if you need a human. They have an online business and a real store as well. They are the North Sails Atlantic loft as well and used to be primarily a rigging shop. Ask for Jamie. 902 445-3278 Probably also a 1-800 number listed on their web site www.yachtshop.cahttp://www.yachtshop.ca Mike From: CnC-List [mailto:cnc-list-boun...@cnc-list.com] On Behalf Of Barbara Hickson Fellers via CnC-List Sent: Tuesday, July 07, 2015 10:33 AM To: cnc-list@cnc-list.com Cc: Barbara Hickson Fellers Subject: Re: Stus-List CnC-List Digest, Vol 114, Issue 10 Besides RigRite, does anyone know where I could source a new boom outbaul slide? Hi Josh, Is the rudder shaft exposed under the deck (I haven't crawled down there yet), where you can clamp the bronze arm? There is a shelf which appears to be 3/4 plywood encapsulated and glassed to the hull under the stbd propane locker. The hydraulic piston is mounted to the shelf and drives a bronze arm attached to the rudder shaft. The feedback positionner is mounted to an additional shelf on the port side of the rudder sleeve and the linkage attaches to the same bronze arm. Right now all I have are pictures of the bronze arm. Been there and done that. Will never go back to a stainless slide in an aluminum boom.
