Re: Stus-List Water Tank Woes

2016-07-07 Thread Frederick G Street via CnC-List
Dennis — have you forgotten about the boat I worked on several years back that
was struck by lightning? It was a really hot day, and the second day of a
charter; the boat got struck, and had to be towed into the marina. I went
aboard the next morning; it was about 100F below, and reeked to high heaven.
It turns out the boat had a flexible holding tank up under the v-berth; the
lightning came down the mast and side-flashed through the half-full holding
tank, causing it to explode. The resulting “liquid” cooked below in the hot
sun for a day and a half. It took them quite a while to get rid of that smell.

Okay, so maybe an extreme example… :^)

Let me be the first to post about a failed flex\bladder tank. Pegasus had
2, 1 for black water (leaked), the other was a square tank under the v berth.
Could only put 10 gallons in a 40 gallon tank. Rest was air. Replaced both with
plastic much happier.

Dave,

Any fridge systems that have the danfoss compressor (Nova Cool, Alder Barbour,
etc.) are probably compatible with the Stainless Lobster fridge controller.
This would be the upgrade that I would strongly consider prior to replacing a
perfectly good system. Some of the manufacturers (Nova Cool) will
refurbish/recharge your used system for a reasonable price (~$100). The
threaded connections are well design to be lossless when connected/disconnected.

Dave,

We added an all in one refrigeration unit to our 33-2, one of the best upgrades
yet! Used this unit
http://www.westmarine.com/buy/waeco-adler-barbour--coolmatic-cooling-conversion-kit--7895881

installed it on the cockpit side of the icebox, had to cut the cockpit bulkhead
also. The insulation was in good shape, and about 3" thick. Last weekend we
found ice in some of the water bottles after we left it turned a bit too far
down.

We also reworked the lid, as I got tired of it hitting me. I removed the hinges
on the back side, and hinged it in the middle so it folds onto its other half.

Hi All,
Seems the boat is never "done".I read a recent thread here on older
iceboxes and the benefit of improved insulation, and wonder about my '85.
As other work gets done, the ice box has moved up the project list a bit.

I replaced the gasket and the manual drain pump, and will need to tighten the
lid screws to address wear/lid wobble, (might need screw holes filled) and
replace the rusting and now detached wire basket/shelf inside. For sure the
small gap between the two lid sections could be sealed somehow, and I will cut
a closed-cell foam "blanket" to cover the top. This should help deal with the
gap as well as insulate a bit better. After that, the work gets more invasive
as the insulated (we hope) cavities are quite difficult to access.

Has anyone tackled a 33-2 ice box? I am wondering mostly about the amount of
insulation and whether it was installed effectively. Any thoughts or advice
would be much appreciated!

FYI - according to Bristol marine here in Toronto, The 41, 33-2, and 35-3 are

One of my water tanks continues to leak and it appears to be where the barbed
elbow fitting exits the tank .  I've wrapped the threads with Teflon tape [both
pink and white], but it fails to make a good seal.  This is my 3rd attempt to
fix it.
The tank is a Kracor brand, and the tank's walls and bottom appear to be quite
thick.  I have observed "weeping" only right around the hole where the elbow
fitting is screwed into it.

Does anyone have a suggestion?  Is there some adhesive that I can apply the
threads of the barbed fitting??

Thanks,

Harry, Kracor is a brand and they are molded LLDPE plastic. Welded tanks are
made differently and they are either LDPE or HDPE. Molded tanks are generally
higher quality than welded tanks.

Yes we do have a big lake to sail her in :)

There is a pretty good racing community here. With that I'm wondering what
would the PHRF be for my boat in these lake conditions.

Wherever we look for PHRF scores my boat shows a PHRF of 141-159.

At 141 I'm getting constantly out scored by really significant margins.

Any ideas or suggestions that would help with a more accurate PHRF #

Is it that you have a bulb and some kevlar in your layup per the later

I'd be interested in figuring out what "went out" with your unit.
Last year the little computer fan on mine stopped spinning. That was a quick
and easy fix.
This year, mine had a bad solder joint which after years of service developed a
high resistance and burnt up the fuse holder. Worst part is that the circuit
board that held the fuse was an add-on by Alder Barbour to the stock Danfoss
compressor. New fuse holders and some solder, ~$12, and I was back in
business. It's been working like a champ even through these 98°F days. If
that hadn't worked then the Stainless Lobster was my next step since it
bypasses the troubling alder barbour circuit board.
There is a huge support network and a long history for the danfoss compressors.
The nice thing about the Stainless Lobster controller is that it has a boost
mode so normally it will run low and slow and almost continuously. You can
also program it to maintain a slight higher temperature in normal mode. All of
this causes a lower overall A-Hr draw from the battery. When a charging source
becomes available the controller will go into "boost" mode where it runs at
full speed and a lower temperature band. This pre-cools to a lower temperature
and saves a few A-Hrs when back on battery.

My boat worker colleague thinks they are worth the extra $$. Like I said, I
bought an Isotherm. I didn't seriously consider the Technautics units because
of price. I looked hard at the FrigoBoat and Isotherm units. Both seem to be
highly regarded.

I just wanted to make the list aware of the Technautics units because they are
apparently very good, have excellent technical support and have very low amp
draw. Whether or not they're worth the price differential, who knows?

I think the bigger decision when considering refrigeration is whether to
install a traditional evaporator type unit or a cold plate type unit. There
are advantages to each particularly if you turn the system off when you leave
the boat for a few days.

Touche's Isotherm cold plate unit takes quite a while to cool down but once it
does, I think it works very well. We sometimes give it some help by throwing a
bag of ice in the bottom of the box. It's been holding temps of 37-38F easily.

If you want a quick cool down day sail type system perhaps an evaporator unit
is better. My perception is that they cool the box quicker.

That's the way the Isotherm ASU systems work. They sense increased voltage
from shore power or engine running and boost the compressor to really
freeze the cold plate.

Hi Aaron,

I don't know anything about that boat Defiant, but I'm curious about sailing
around Galveston. Is that where your friend's 35-1 is? I just spent a long
weekend there as my daughter is starting the Physician Assistant program at
University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston. Saw a couple of marinas with
sailboats, and saw some sailboats out on Galveston Bay in a nice breeze. Found
a couple of companies with sailboats for charter in Texas City / Kemah on
Galveston Bay.

Gorgeous boat and definitely priced to move. Too bad I don't need a bigger
boat that's a very sweet deal on a really nice boat that should not need
any major projects for a while.

We also reworked the lid, as I got tired of it hitting me. I removed the hinges

This also means we can remove completely to fill, empty or clean the icebox.

Dave,

Any fridge systems that have the danfoss compressor (Nova Cool, Alder
Barbour, etc.) are probably compatible with the Stainless Lobster fridge
controller. This would be the upgrade that I would strongly consider prior
to replacing a perfectly good system. Some of the manufacturers (Nova
Cool) will refurbish/recharge your used system for a reasonable price
(~$100). The threaded connections are well design to be lossless when
connected/disconnected.

2016-07-07 Thread Andrew Burton via CnC-List
Just watched the 35-2 Hat Trick leave Block Island. I don't have a dinghy with
me so I couldn't go over and say hi. Thanks to this list I find myself assuming
that any other C I come across has friends aboard. Nice bunch of people
here!

Dave,

I'll try to get a couple of pictures when we are at the boat this weekend.

Thanks Paul, Edd.

My original refrigerAtion unit (nova cool?) is still working so I had not
planned to tackle that quite yet. Will research Engels and Adler Barbour. Is
the upgrade worthwhile or is this really something to consider once replacement
is necessary?

The all in one approach looks very elegant - Paul, do you have a photo of the
install? Curious.

And... Lol ... I guess I have not been whacked in the head quite enough to
have thought of the single piece hinged lid approach. What a great idea.
Thanks!

Dave

This also means we can remove completely to fill, empty or clean the icebox.

Hi All,
Seems the boat is never "done".I read a recent thread here on older
iceboxes and the benefit of improved insulation, and wonder about my '85.

Dave,

I?ve heard a lot of good things about Engel ? it?s what I?m planning on using
when I redo the refrigeration on the Enterprise.

Interesting discussion. Here is a link to a thorough but concise overview of
refrig. Capacity and to Dennis' point, a comparison of evaporator vs holding
plate types.

My boat worker colleague thinks they are worth the extra $$. Like I said,
I bought an Isotherm. I didn't seriously consider the Technautics units
because of price. I looked hard at the FrigoBoat and Isotherm units. Both
seem to be highly regarded.

I just wanted to make the list aware of the Technautics units because they
are apparently very good, have excellent technical support and have very
low amp draw. Whether or not they're worth the price differential, who
knows?

I think the bigger decision when considering refrigeration is whether to
install a traditional evaporator type unit or a cold plate type unit.
There are advantages to each particularly if you turn the system off when
you leave the boat for a few days.

Touche's Isotherm cold plate unit takes quite a while to cool down but once
it does, I think it works very well. We sometimes give it some help by
throwing a bag of ice in the bottom of the box. It's been holding temps of
37-38F easily.

If you want a quick cool down day sail type system perhaps an evaporator
unit is better. My perception is that they cool the box quicker.
