Hi Don,

You can search it using Google by specifying the site.

Try keying...

site:cnc-list.com windlass

...into a google search.

Subject: Stus-List C&C 34 Windlass
Hello All

Has anyone installed a windlass on a C&C 34? Or something reasonably close.

I no longer have the desire to pull up the anchor by hand and I would
appreciate help from anyone who has done this. Pictures would be really
great.

Also, is there any way to search the archives without going month by month?

Thanks

Re: Stus-List C&C 34 Windlass

2017-05-16 Thread Jeremy Ralph via CnC-List
I've been thinking of doing the same.

I recently redid the standing rigging, stanchions and lifelines and asked
the rigging co about installing a windlass. They said they would cut the
chain locker hatch top into fore and aft parts. They would reinforce the
half where the windlass would go with steel to the deck and have it drop
into the remaining half that would be hinged.

Originally I was thinking about a fiberglass shelf but don't know if there
would be enough drop height.

Cheers,

Re: Stus-List Backstay length and tension

2017-05-16 Thread David Knecht via CnC-List
Mike and Pete get the points for this one if we are keeping score. I had to
replace one turnbuckle (fell in the river while trying to attach with the
threads at max) and I missed the fact that there was supposed to be a toggle on
the end. That extra 3” might be the difference. I am not sure it will give me
enough to make attachment easy, but it will certainly help. I will report back
when I have installed the toggles. Dave

I used to be a marine repair "pro". Couple years ago I did a port
replacement on a boat that had ports mounted similarly to C&C's. The first
thing I did was to remove ALL the old sealant and properly prep the
adhering surface. IMHO, and from years of marine repair, proper
preparation is 80-90% of a quality job.

I considered the same thing - if the plexus is well adhered then
why not just leave it there?
But some of the plexus was not well adhered - some came off
fairly easily with just hand pressure on a chisel.  I decided I
didn't want to finish the job to discover that the foundation
attachment was weak in spots and in need of replacement.
That said I couldn't "pull" my plexus off -- it was rock hard and
  had to be chipped away

Due to time
constraints, I am having a highly recommended pro do the
work, and he removed one of the ports today.  He asked a
reasonable question, since the plexiglass peeled off without
pulling any of the Plexus off the gelcoat.  When he tried to
pull a bit of the Plexus off, as many of you have commented,
it also pulled some of the gelcoat.  The Plexus also quite
hard.

So, if the Plexus is

I understand the
thickness of the VHB might make the window stand out a
little proud from the fiberglass by comparison, but I'm not
sure that's a bad tradeoff compared to trying to remove
something that might serve as a good substrate anyway.

Stus-List Plexus Removal During Fixed Port Replacement

2017-05-16 Thread robert via CnC-List

Bruce:

I replaced my ports approx. 7 years ago.the old ones were help in
place by Plexus.I used a Dremmel with a fine bit to remove the
Plexus.it had to be removed otherwise the new ports would not 'seat
properly' and flush with the side cabin top(s). I did not want the new
ports protruding out beyond the side of the cabin.

If a pro is doing it, I'd have the pro do it so it will looklike a pro
did the job.

Due to time constraints, I am having a highly recommended pro do the
work, and he removed one of the ports today. He asked a reasonable
question, since the plexiglass peeled off without pulling any of the
Plexus off the gelcoat. When he tried to pull a bit of the Plexus
off, as many of you have commented, it also pulled some of the
gelcoat. The Plexus also quite hard.

So, if the Plexus is so well adhered, and it will be very stubborn to
come off the gelcoat (and do damage in the process), Should I just
leave the Plexus in place and allow the VHB to attach to it?

I understand the thickness of the VHB might make the window stand out
a little proud from the fiberglass by comparison, but I'm not sure
that's a bad tradeoff compared to trying to remove something that
might serve as a good substrate anyway.

Re: Stus-List Replacement hinges 35mkIII

2017-05-16 Thread Indigo via CnC-List
The ones I got from Rex are chrome plated zinc alloy (0808DP0CHR)

Can't recall how the hood side of the hinges are attached, but seem to remember
that they were attached with nut and bolt, but seem to remember that nut just
spun when I tried to replace a broken hinge in the past requiring removal of
the hood. I plan to epoxy the nuts in place so broken hinges can be replaced
more easily in the future!

Re: Stus-List Looking for recommendation for a good rigger

2017-05-16 Thread Neil E. Andersen via CnC-List
I would recommend Annapolis Rigging. They are experience with Navtec and were
able to test all my rigging after a boat yard incident with another boat (long
story). Their evaluation was acceptable to the insurance company based on
their standing with Navtec.

You can reach them via the owner at j...@annapolisrigging.com.

They do that too I'm pretty sure. I had them do a survey of my rigging and they
came out to me.

There are a bunch of riggers based out of Annapolis, which is about 1.5 hours

Anybody on this list have a recommendation?

Thanks for your tips but no luck so far. MassMarine has a couple of
Mk3 rudders on hand so they may be a good starting point. Still hunting
though...
