Stus-List Courtesy lights replacement bulbs

2017-08-15 Thread Kevin Driscoll via CnC-List
Expanding on the LED discussion, does anyone know what type of bulb is in
the courtesy lights in the Rob Ball era boats? They have to be small.

Thanks,

Hi Dave...The new Pontos winches are new for thus season..They are 4 speed
and shift gears sort of automatically.  You don't have to switch or flip
buttons.
They are fast and the video in the ads is very accurate.  They say you could
use only 1 trimmer since he could release and get to the incoming sheet faster
than the usual system.I'm lucky enough to have 2 guys that handle our 155
nicely.So far, I /they really like them.  I don't have any service
experience yet..I bought them from Defender on sale.About $4300 for
both.they fit right where my BarientSTs wereI'm currently operating
with only 4 winches. 2 Pontos 46 Grinders and 2 BarientSTs on the coach roof
for halyards.I cleaned off the deck and retired all the other
winchesHope this helpsRon

It means that if you grab it, you're going to get cut. Or, in the case of a
stock, you buy it as it's going down, and then it goes bankrupt. I know all
about it. I suppose in the case of a boat, it's one that is so far gone that
you will invest more money and time than you will ever get out of it.

floated off, He saw it. Re-cranked the engine and it ran fine.

Re: Stus-List Dinghy on fordeck

2017-08-15 Thread Dennis C. via CnC-List
I keep our 9'4" Achilles on the foredeck and sail with it when we have the
boat in Pensacola. No real issues. Just rig a line from toe rail to toe
rail over the dinghy to keep the jibsheets from fouling.

The Admiral and I are quite adept at using a halyard to launch and retrieve
it. Just use a piece of Dri-Deck or something to rest it on. Don't use a
towel. It can retain water and cause blisters on the deck.

I've bought the same inflatable RIB as Fred for our Landfall 35 but opted for a
set of Forespar Davits to make dinghy storage a breeze. Bought at the annual
Defender sale, they fit the boat well and retain access to the stern ladder

And the width of the Davit mounts match perfectly with the lift points on the

Paul,You are correct.  Eric Bruckmann's plant was one of the original 4
entities merged to create C Yachts.  Eric was a brilliant, old school master
boatwright who was willing to try new technology, although sometimes
grudgingly. He would grouse and grumble, but get it done.  He did almost all
the prototype work and built all the custom boats.  He also built some of the
wood plugs from which production tooling was made.  There simply wasn't
anything in the boat building business at the time, that our custom plant could
not do. With boats like "Red Jacket", the Canada's Cupper "Evergreen" and the
MEGA with its bullet proof windows, what came out of that plant was cutting
edge, state of the art technology. They were making reality out of the creative
ideas coming from the industry's brightest design office of the time.
I found excuses to stop by there quite often. I'd always visit with David Gee
who was plant manager and Eric to see what was going on then wander around the
plant asking questions and observing. There was always something new and
different happening,  things to be seen and learned. For someone who loved
boats, it was like a kid visiting a candy store.

Obviously, the stern of the LF-38 is different as is the rig and keel.  The
basic hull shape is the same as the 38-2.

If memory serves, all the 38's were built at NOTL and all the Landfalls at RI.

Thanks. I agree, my thinking is that it will be towed while under sail. Its an
Acorn Tender and they tow very well.

We have had that problem with our 35 since we got it. My fix this summer
was to velcro an extended boathook to the shrouds on port, with the rubber
handle and rubber tips against the shrouds. Looks silly, but it worked.

I have stowed my inflatable on the fordeck of my LF38 during the winter also.
It is an Achilles 280 RIB. I have sailed with it there, but the hub sheets can
get tangled and it is a royal PITA to go forward. I sailed to Hawaii with a
hard she'll dinghy lashed to the fore deck of a 35 Ericson. Once again ROYAL
PITA. No other choice there. FWIW

John — over the last winter I purchased new Mercury 280 Hypalon RIB for my boat
(to replace the 20-year-old Seaworthy 9.2 wooden-floor dinghy, which was
starting to slow-leak…), and I put it up on the foredeck to store out of the
water between sailing weekends.  There’s no way I could sail with it up there;
it would foul both the genny and the sheets.  I could always deflate it, but
that would just add time when we got out into the islands.  So we tow it behind
when leaving the marina, and hoist it back on deck when we’re ready to leave
the boat after a trip out.
Given the shape of the foredeck (narrow and pointy), the cabin top and the
length of your rowing dinghy, I’m not sure I can imagine how you’d make it work.

Re: Stus-List Deck creaking mystery + spider cracking at stanchions

2017-08-15 Thread Patrick Davin via CnC-List
It's very common to have spider web cracking in the gelcoat (and maybe into
the fiberglass) on old boats around the stanchions. It doesn't necessarily
mean water is getting into the core, but it's good to investigate, which it
sounds like you're doing.

Many surveyors will say they found voids (air pockets in the layup) or even
wet core, without really explaining the meaning of that (to a new boat
owner) or the severity. Have you asked the surveyor how he determined the
deck was wet and approximately what size area it was? A good surveyor would
be able to tell you that (and would've already included it in the written
report ideally).

If you can send some pictures that would help. Hard to speculate too much
without seeing it.

You're right that the deck within a few inches of the hull-deck joint is
solid fiberglass, so you don't need to worry about deck penetrations there.
I did a writeup on cored/non-cored sections of the deck for the LF38
(caveat: every boat is different, not guaranteed to be the same for all)
here: https://svviolethour.com/2016/01/26/rebedding-on-a-cc-landfall-38/

Those things may be obvious to many here, but as a new boat owner,
identifying every cored vs non-cored area on the boat and which ones to
worry about was not obvious at all and took me about a year.

Not sure what to think of the creaking while jumping fore/aft of the
chainplates. Depends on how hard you're jumping. :) It could mean any of a
number of things.

I need to take my canvas back to them for winter work later this year. Is there
anything interesting near there to do if I am going to drive all that way
anyway? Never been near their shop and had to fight some NAFTA inspired customs
billing nightmare last time we shipped anything, so driving it is.
(shipping canvas for an alteration and back to me had both USA and Canadian
customs thinking this was new stuff going both ways argh!)

Obviously, the stern of the LF-38 is different as is the rig and keel.  The
basic hull shape is the same as the 38-2.

If memory serves, all the 38's were built at NOTL and all the Landfalls at RI.

Stus-List Overheating mystery

2017-08-15 Thread Tom Buscaglia via CnC-List
Yesterday as we were pulling out of an overnight at Otter Bay and had an
overheating issue. Steam out the exhaust and that alarm thing. We drifted
around with Lynn on watch while I checked the impeller, intake and belts. But
no luck. So, we called vessel assist ( if you cruise and do not have Boat US
tow insurance you should).

We hauled up the sails and headed for Van Isle and the tow boat found us just
as the wind died.

I call ahead to Stew at U.K. and he recommended a Yanmar mechanic, Ben, who was
able to get down and check thing out once we landed. Absolutely nothing wrong
with the cooling system. It was all just fine. He did find a few items that
I'll need to address, like a seized loose mount, but the raw water system was
clear and flushing great.

This is the second time I have had an overheating issue that is appeared
without explanation. Anyone else have this sort of thing happen?

Maybe Alera just wanted to sail and was letting us know that she would not
motor until we did...oh well, on to Victoria.

2017-08-15 Thread Dennis C. via CnC-List
Just for grins, make a nice fillet for the tabbing. Grind back to virgin
glass or wood, mix some thickened epoxy, put an epoxy bead around the joint
then smooth it into a radius fillet with the backside of a plastic spoon.
Let it cure then tab it with some biaxial tape.

For the bead use a syringe or a plastic zip lock bag with a corner cut off
(think cake decorating).

Stus-List Deck creaking mystery + spider cracking at stanchions

2017-08-15 Thread Chris Hobson via CnC-List
The surveyor found what he said was wet deck near a stanchion aft of the
shrouds, at the base are spider-cracks. I’ve sounded that area of the deck
myself, measured with a moisture meter and found nothing notable - but I’m no
expert.

I even drilled a pilot hole down below to see if water was in the core from the
underside and it's dry as a bone. Which tells me the spider cracking around the
base of the stanchion is compromising the integrity of the top layer. And if
you put pressure on it it flexes. But so do other stanchions. Also there’s
about 4-5” of solid fibreglass from the hull/deck joint around the entire
perimeter of the boat which takes up about 60% of the area where the spider
cracks emanate out from. I might grind it out and re-epoxy.

Also when I jump up and down forward/aft of the chainplates there’s creaking.
The only thing I can connect it with is the teak woodwork down below where it
meets the deck is perhaps rubbing. Otherwise it’s pretty sound and there’s no
obvious flexing on the deck other than at the stanchion.

Anyone else have a squeaky deck? And I assume that any and all of this is
pretty much on par with a boat of this vintage. I just like the idea that it’s
something I can resolve.

The boat was in horrible shape about 6-8 years ago and probably has not
improved. I doubt you would do well even if you got her for free.
Speaking of boat values, pretty much any older boat now is a “falling knife”
investment. If anyone does still want old boats, no reason to get a half or
3/4s dead one.

Re: Stus-List Design question on the 38 vs the 38 landfall - Now C Custom

2017-08-15 Thread Paul Fountain via CnC-List
Hank,

Eric’s son Mark is now running the business, and doing custom boats still, both
power and sail – usually Mark Ellis designs ( a C alumni). He also does
custom work, I had him make the new teak hand rails for our C a couple of
years ago, he does beautiful work. My sister has had him do a bunch of work on
her C 30, Her table should be in a Better Homes and Gardens show house!

Good friends have a power boat built by him that is also beautiful.

The old building is still there, and may be vacant by now – the City now owns
the property, and runs the docks along Bronte Creek.

Paul,
You are correct. Eric Bruckmann's plant was one of the original 4 entities
merged to create C Yachts.

Re: Stus-List Design question on the 38 vs the 38 landfall

2017-08-15 Thread Matthew L. Wolford via CnC-List
I previously heard it was in Oakville. Sounds like the information was
accurate. I’ll have a look around the next time I’m in the area.

Thanks.

If memory serves me – The custom shop was at Bruckmann’s in Oakville (actually
Bronte on the west side of Oakville), still in business today, but at a
different location in Mississauga.

Question for Hank:

Where was the “custom shop”? I have a “42 Custom,” which is more or less a
sistership of the first Baltic 42, and I was told that only six were built in
the “custom shop.”

Obviously, the stern of the LF-38 is different as is the rig and keel. The
basic hull shape is the same as the 38-2.

If memory serves, all the 38's were built at NOTL and all the Landfalls at RI.

Trying to resolve a friendly dispute. Are the 38 and the Landfall 38 from the
same mold?

Thanks

I need to take my canvas back to them for winter work later this year. Is there
anything interesting near there to do if I am going to drive all that way
anyway? Never been near their shop and had to fight some NAFTA inspired customs
billing nightmare last time we shipped anything, so driving it is.
(shipping canvas for an alteration and back to me had both USA and Canadian
customs thinking this was new stuff going both ways argh!)
