Re: Stus-List Vented loop for engine above exhaust elbow?

I have read ( I haven’t seen it personally) that if you are sailing for long
periods in following seas (e.g. ocean crossings), you may want to have a shut
off valve installed on the exhaust hose. Some people reported that despite the
high point in the hose, the sea water eventually filled up the muffler and then
made its way into the cylinders causing a water (hydro) lock. Not a fun task to
do when you are approaching your destination.

And,, BTW, I don’t see the raw water line into the exhaust elbow as the most
likely source of siphoning water into the exhaust manifold. More likely water
from the hose and muffler. Again, Westerbeke/Universal recommends that the
hose between muffler and outlet have a high point at least 18” above the
waterline (and that the high point be near the transom to prevent following
waves from filling up the exhaust system). My high point is about 24” up (in
the starboard lazarette) just above the muffler and then slopes down and aft to
an exit under the break of the transom and 6” above the waterline.

For those that have one, do you know what kind you have? Vetus makes a few -

require running a vent line overboard or to a cockpit drain, or they leak water

Also where do you have it mounted / how high? My mechanic suggested mounting
it as high as possible, which means running it up into the stbd lazarette. I'm

You don’t actually need a check valve either. I know people who use a manual
valve and run an extra hose all the way out of a thru-hull fitting. They adjust
it for enough water flow to be visible like an outboard engine.

The bang is as good as a valve (as long as it stays there).

Personal experience says that the hydro lock (with fresh water) in a diesel is
not fatal. Might be somewhat different with sea water. Or if you let it stay
there for a while.

Also clearing the water from a gas engine is simple (spar plugs); in a diesel
you pray for the glow plugs (much easier to remove than injectors).

suggest ratchet blocks for the asym sheets though. Ratchet blocks will hold
part of the load making it a bit safer when taking the line off the winch in a

Stus-List oarlocks for old style Zodiac

2018-01-30 Thread Steve Thomas via CnC-List
I have a very old orange and black Zodiac that is still in good shape, but
when I bought it there were no oarlocks. There are a couple of mounting "ears"
made of the same fabric as the boat, but I have not been able to find oarlocks
that match that style of mounting anywhere online. The fabric pieces are 10 by
4.5 inches with well rounded corners. not really an oval, more like a rectangle
with rounded ends. A longitudinal section 1.5 inches wide down the centre is
glued to the tube, inline with the tubes, leaving an "ear" about 9 inches long
and an inch and a quarter or so wide down each side. There are a couple of very
small holes, but that is it for clues. I have not even been able to find an
image of something with that sort of mount.

Anyone know what sort of oarlock would have been mounted on these?

Re: Stus-List Vented loop for engine above exhaust elbow?

2018-01-30 Thread Patrick Davin via CnC-List
Thanks all. Rick, that's the sort of nightmare story I'm hoping to avoid!
When you say corners were cut "on the exhaust elbow, hose routing, and the
siphon break" do you mean the prior engine had those things installed in a
poor manner, or that a siphon break wasn't installed?

I haven't heard from any Landfall 38 owners about layout (where the loop is
mounted), so if any of those folks have one I'd still be interested in
that.

I did wonder about temperature. I think the exchanger raw water output is
not as hot as the exhaust? Forespar says Marelon is okay to 170F.
Interestingly the Scot loop says 140 F max temp, which is pretty low. Maybe
because their vent parts are made out of plastic Delrin, or they're just
being conservative. In the diagram Paul sent me they show the loop in use
between the exchanger and exhaust elbow, so obviously they intend for it to
be used in that role.

I guess most people do the loop between the exchanger outlet and the
exhaust elbow because it's easier to install there than in between the
water pump and the exchanger inlet. And presuming the water is below 170F
then Marelon is okay in either location.

I agree the exhaust transom exit is probably the greater risk in most
cases. I already have an ample exhaust hose rise there though, and the
waterlock muffler should prevent siphoning afaik. It'd take a lot for
following waves to push past a 3 foot rise in a 1.5" hose and then through
an exhaust riser. I'd consider an exhaust lock (inline, in an accessible
location) if I'm worried about that. Hanging from the transom in ocean
swells to insert a plug doesn't seem viable.

Re: Stus-List 2018 Mid-Atlantic C&C rendezvous

2018-01-30 Thread Josh Muckley via CnC-List
*UPDATE*

So I went to Annapolis to scout marinas, moorings, and slips for rent. It
looks like the Annapolis City Docks are panning out as the best location.
Great central location, shops and restaurants available. Walking distance
to nearly everything including to the US Naval Academy. Plenty of power,
water, bathhouse, showers, uber, lift, and parking . The biggest downside
is that because it is downtown there is a lot of foot traffic. I checked
about security and there is not much. Then again there isn't much crime
so The showers are not much to write home about and there is no pool.
The majority of the space is side tie though there are some slips. The
price is $3.25 per foot and we will probably need reservations by March
31st. All reservations will be handled by each individual with the
harbormaster. Once we finalize the dates and location I'll forward the
contact info to you here.

I'm looking for feedback and a verbal confirmation from all interested
boaters. The survey results have about 30 respondents interested in coming
and about half of those by boat. I've taken extensive efforts to carefully
select a date and location that maximizes the number of attendees. I'd
like to get agreement on dates and location within the next week. I'd feel
like a successful compromise has been reached if 10 people confirmed
attendance by land and 10 by boat.

Respond by answering the survey below:

Thanks!

I use a Velocitek Speed Puck when racing. Shows heading along with lifts and

far easier to read than an iPhone display.

All,

When I did my first Annapolis Bermuda race the crew of The Office wanted a
digital compass forward of the traveler. My cheapskate solution - my iPhone in
a RAM mount running iRegatta with a long charging cable worked great (except
for the text messages that popped up down the Bay). It was replaced with a
used plotter from a fellow C&Cer.

I have ST60 gauges for wind, speed and depth over the companionway, but none
display heading. They are networked to my plotter.

I don't want to spend for a TackTick or Prostart. I know I can go to the phone
and solar charger again, but is there a better solution? I've looked for a
waterproof digital compass, but I'm coming up empty.

The original recipe that was published here was

1 gal. warm water
2/3 cup ammonia

It works really well for removing old oil and dirt from the wood. You may
need more than one application, and you do need to flush it well with clean
water before refinishing.

Stus-List Adding asym sail/sprit to C&C 36

2018-01-30 Thread Charles Nelson via CnC-List
Difficulties in finding enough crew to fly my masthead kite (~7-8) have me
thinking of adding a sprit with asym kite to make it possible to be competitive
in the spin fleet with less crew (~ 4-6). I only had 6 for our last race and
the wind was 10-15 so we decided to forego the kite and took a 1st, 2nd and 3rd
(only 3 boats competed). This weekend I am down to only 4 so probably won't
compete, giving up a solid 2nd with a poss 1st if my crew were not in the BVI,
etc. My thoughts are solely to have the option to use the asym if I don't have
enough crew to do the symm Masthead kite so I would likely keep the asym size
such that my rating is not changed. Thoughts on this plan from the list would
be appreciated.
I do realize that this is a complicated issue and I may have to get some expert
advice on sprit length, asym sail size/shape not to mention figuring out how to
fly it but I am starting with the collective list wisdom.

Re: Stus-List Adding asym sail/sprit to C&C 36

2018-01-30 Thread Eric Baumes via CnC-List
Hi,

I did this a few years ago on my 34/36+ Brief write up here
http://svheesoo.com/content/bowsprint-retro-fit-project

Here is the pertinent information on sizing.

*PHRF Regulations*

The YRALIS allows for a retrofit bowsprit to be 24% of J without penalty
for Windward/Leward racing. For distance racing it asseses a -6 second
penalty.

To support an unsupported length of ~52 inches, the Selden Selden 99mm
Aluminum Bowsprit Kit - 10.4 Ft. was required. The 52 inches is comprised
of the 42 in beyond the forestay allowed by PHRF plus the forward ring was
mounted approximately 10" behind the forestay on the deck.

If you have the same Harken furler and bow roller there is just enough room.

This is something you can DIY.

The uncut sprit was just over the limit for UPS so I had them cut it to
avoid the freight charge.

Let me know if you have any questions.

Re: Stus-List Adding asym sail/sprit to C&C 36

2018-01-30 Thread Eric Baumes via CnC-List
To answer some of your other questions.

I have a .75 A2 runner. It is about 25% bigger in area than the symmetrical
kite--ALIR allows SMG to be calculated of of J + sprint length.

It is generally easier to rig, hoist and fly the Asym. One change is that
instead of using a turtle to launch of the deck and re-packing between
legs, we now launch and dowse from the forward hatch. The bigger kite is
really a pain to have to repack, so when we dowse we leave everything but
the halyard rigged.

In light/moderate wind 4 crew can handle the kite. I sailed a distance race
with 3 once. I have done 4 in 15-20 and it is a lot of work.

Jibing overall is a lot easier, but if you are doing an inside jibe, then
the helmsman has to be very attentive. If you throw the helm over too
quickly then the chute will wrap around the forestay.

There are some good videos on Jibing an Asym on Youtube.

PS When my crew complains about anything (cheap beer, American cheese on
sandwiches, etc.) I threaten them that I will go back to the Symmetrical.
They usually shape up after that.

Jeol — the Graphic is like the old Multi display, but doesn’t have fixed
characters, and can display more graphic formats like gauges or a GPS highway
display. I’ll forward you the manual off-list so you can see all the datatypes
it supports.
