Stus-List C ownership

2018-09-27 Thread ALAN BERGEN via CnC-List
Don't let having a child stop you from sailing, Stephan. When our son was
just six months old, we put him in a car seat, strapped it to a winch and
went sailing.

I have owned DejaVu, a 1990 34/36 for the past 7 years. She is my third
C before her a 24' then another 34'. We sailed the hell out of her all
around the Gulf of Mexico but now she sits on a custom trailer in Pensacola
Shipyard Marina. The birth of a child will do that to you ;) Thought
long and hard about parting ways with her but I cant do it, so she remains
sidelined and dearly missed for all the great adventures she surely brought
to us all who sailed her. Maybe I will bring her up to Lake Lanier and
someday give her to my son Max, who is 2 years old.

Re: Stus-List years a C owner

2018-09-27 Thread Fred Hazzard via CnC-List
I was 5 when I got my first boat, a row boat. I began sailing opt’s at 12.
Although I sailed through college, I did not own another boat until I
bought a flattie ( Gary 18) after college.
My first keel boat was a San Juan 24. From there I got a C 34. It was a
great family cruiser that we owned for 8 years.

>From there it was a couple of racer cruisers for the next 20 years.

Ten years ago we got Fury, a C 44. It is primarily our cruiser with a
few races thrown in. Our great adventure with Fury was taking it to the Sea
of Cortez for the winter 5 years ago.

During the last 20 years I have very actively raced a Cal 20 in a one
design fleet of 12 to 20 Cal’s.

That brings me to the ripe old age of 76 with 71 years of boating and 69
years of sailing and 18 years in C’s.

Wahoo!! Still sailing after all these years.

Stus-List Long time C owner

2018-09-27 Thread Greg Swetka via CnC-List
We have owned our 1974 C since 1994, over 24 years. We are the third
owners and we paid almost the exact same price as the original owner paid,
exactly 20 years earlier! We have the original invoice that shows it...
ironically, I worked for the dealership that sold her, new, so that means that
I would have commissioned her, new! She was sold out of Burr Sailboats in Mt.
Clemens, Mi and is still kept and sails on Lake St. Clair, with trips to Lake
Huron and Lake Erie.

Re: Stus-List Rob - C long time question

2018-09-27 Thread Rick Brass via CnC-List
I’ve owned my 25, la Belle Aurore, since June, 1994. Just over 24 years.

Imzadi, my 38, was bought in May, 2003. So that’s a bit over 15 years now.

In response to a comment in another thread, My Grandfather and I built my first
sailboat during the summer that I turned 14 – a bit over 54 years ago. She was
really a crappy sailboat – he was a carpenter and I was a kid, and neither of
us knew crap about boats at the time – but beamy and stable and a boat I
couldn’t get in much trouble with.

And most of my best friends own C Can’t say if they are good friends
because they like C, or if they bought C because they are great folks who
became good friends. And I suppose it doesn’t really matter which.

Re: Stus-List Rob - Edge: survival

2018-09-27 Thread Mark Baldridge via CnC-List

Richard,

I anchored her out on Tuesday, 9/11. I was the only boat there at the
time. I've anchored my 35mk2 in that location many times. I like it
because no one else anchors there and there is enough deep water that if
it blows out I don't pound the bottom.

Two other boats later anchored out with me, a Catalina 25 and a Nonsuch.
Both of them blew on shore. The Catalina was retrieved before the waters
dropped and was re-anchored. No such luck for the Nonsuch (see pic).

I put out a delta 35lb on 200 ft or rode with new chafe guard. I put out
a 35lb CQR with 200ft of chain and snubber. When I found her, she had
drug .42 miles. Good thing I didn't have the spot tracker running or I
would have gone crazy. The delta was not holding and was wrapped up in a
ghost crabpot. The CQR was holding and the snubber had come unattached
and the chain spun the release on the windlass so that all the chain
plus 150ft of rode ran out. Good thing the rode was well attached to the
bow. It took about 15 minutes to get the CQR up with the windlass and
assistance from a powerboat. Next time I will use my 45lb danforth as
the secondary anchor. Lesson learned.

When I retrieved the boat the engine would just bump and not turn over.
I hand turned it back and it would stop at the same spot going forward.
Figured water may have entered it. I keep a head sail on board, so we
sailed her back in the slip. That was Monday 9/17. Still blowing, but
had help putting her in the slip. Motor is fine after getting the water
out and changing oil/filter. So, not a scratch on her!

Everyone that stayed at the Washington Country Club docks in Broad Creek
did fine. Figure that! I just can't leave a boat in the slip during high
water. Boats also came off their stands in the yards due to high water.
A lot of boats anchored in Broad Creek also went in the trees. I'll take
my chances out at anchor in the big water.

Finesse is a great boat. Doug owned a C 39 for years before that (also
Finesse). We were all amazed when he returned his original 39 to
Niagara-on-the-Lake and had a replacement deck installed.

Rich Loesel was a great sailor and another very tough competitor against our
Cal 33 back in the day. He owned his 33-1 from sometime in the 70s (new at the
time) until he died last year. Airborne remains in our club and still looks
great.

Bill, who is lurking on this list, recently “upgraded” to a non-C Shameful.
His 70s-vintage 39, which I believe was the Devshire (also in Erie since new),
is sitting on the hard. Pity.

Stus-List C Owner

With great help from Bill Coleman and the late Rich Loesel in Erie, PA I
purchased Finesse in 2011 from the estate of Doug James, the original owner.
I feel so very lucky to be the present owner and steward of this fine yacht and

2018-09-27 Thread Matthew L. Wolford via CnC-List
Also, there is a 35-1 that I raced against as a kid (on my Dad’s 1972 Cal 33)
over 45 years ago that is still at our local club. Fun rivalry. The original
owner died not too long ago, but the boat remains in the family (his daughter
and son-in-law). My brother has owned the Cal 33 since my Dad died (about 30
years ago). Both boats still look great and remain competitive, although
neither is raced regularly these days.

has been docked in Pensacola for several months.

Touche' was 1st to finish the Gulfport Pensacola Race in June 1972. Went

extensively by a local dentist until 1981. The 4th owner cruised Touche' for a

2018-09-27 Thread Rob Ball via CnC-List
Randy,
I worked one summer while going to Michigan, and started at Cuthbertson and
Cassian in 1969 when I graduated . . .
In 1973, Big George wanted to retire early, and he handed me the Chief Designer
job (much to my surprise).
The C 30 was very much a development of the C 27, and I did the lines
drawing, my first, but very much from Big George’s direction . . . I also did
the sail plan . . .
From 73 to 1990, I was the Chief Designer . . .
There were even a couple of Wind Surfers . . .
There are 7,480 boats out there that I counted once, not counting the Boston
Whalers . . . . ( I have Harpoon 5.2 Number 505) . . .

This drawing came in the records with my boat, 30 MK I hull #7
(HIN 30007972).  A4, tiller steering, boom-end sheeting to
traveler on transom - love the cockpit room.  Her first owner was
Bob Andrews of Traverse City, MI, who raced her in the Mac (the
Chicago Yacht Club Race to Mackinac).  She spent her first 40
years in Traverse City under four different owners, then moved to
Colorado in 2012.  I am her sixth owner and have raced her weekly
for three years at my local club.  At age 46 she’s still
competitive and sharp-looking and a lot of fun.

Thank you for the 30 MK I.  I love that boat.  I’ve had her up to
7.6 knots on GPS, and I’ve had her out in gale-force winds
multiple times.  She’s stiff and stable as hell, and I love
that.  If you’re interested, there are photos of my boat

Mark, that's an awesome story about Edge surviving Florence; do you have any
film footage of the boat before or after (possibly during) the storm?  what
type of bottom did the anchor eventually catch on? Were there other boats
around? Thanks

Purchased Corsair (1981 40-2) in 2004. Will never sell her and will pass
along to my son. I may buy another boat for the south however.

FYI...began as a fore-deck monkey on a 1972 35. Then the owner bought a 38
(Golden Peace on Long Island Sound). He then went on to buy a 40 after I moved
on. Who says C & C owners don't trade up!

Seemed a bit prophetic now that I have a 40.

Hello Al,

I have a question for the list.

How many of you have owned your current C yacht for 5 years or longer.

FYI - we have owned Honey since October 1976 and are currently the second

Re: Stus-List Rob Ball Drawing of C 30 MK I?

2018-09-27 Thread Hoyt, Mike via CnC-List
Hi Randy

We had a lot of C 30-1 at BHYC (they still do there). A hull dimple seemed
pretty common near the shrouds from tightly tensioning the rig. The former
owner of the marina was also a boat builder and he would bring in boats (mostly
C 30s in the end), paint them and resell them. When painting this he always
took care of the dimple

Thanks for sharing your albums

Subject: Stus-List Rob Ball Drawing of C 30 MK I?

Hi Rob,

Since we’re discussing the 30 MK I on the mail list today, I thought I’d share
a blast from the past - a drawing of the sail plan for the 24’9” LWL Auxiliary
Sloop (i.e. the 30 MK I), dated Dec. 22, 1970. See
https://drive.google.com/open?id=1LNnF3ohhpfxYPndc528aTh6uvJHhPOel. Are those
your initials in the Drawn By block?

This drawing came in the records with my boat, 30 MK I hull #7 (HIN 30007972).
A4, tiller steering, boom-end sheeting to traveler on transom - love the
cockpit room. Her first owner was Bob Andrews of Traverse City, MI, who raced
her in the Mac (the Chicago Yacht Club Race to Mackinac). She spent her first
40 years in Traverse City under four different owners, then moved to Colorado
in 2012. I am her sixth owner and have raced her weekly for three years at my
local club. At age 46 she’s still competitive and sharp-looking and a lot of
fun.

Thank you for the 30 MK I. I love that boat. I’ve had her up to 7.6 knots on
GPS, and I’ve had her out in gale-force winds multiple times. She’s stiff and
stable as hell, and I love that. If you’re interested, there are photos of my
boat including various projects at
https://drive.google.com/open?id=0B-NqAxQ6JxFTaUlpUkZJWGt5RVk.

Thanks Again,

BTW – thread creep – Having a C 35 in the early or mid 70s was like having a
Ferrari when everyone else had a golf cart. We bought one because someone else
had one on the river and that boat passed the rest of us like we were aground ☺

Stus-List Grateful 34+ sailor

2018-09-27 Thread Francois Rivard via CnC-List
Hi Rob,

Very cool to "see" you on the list. I have the privilege to own a 1990 34+
and 5 years into owning it I'm still amazed at how far ahead of its time
this boat was.

My boat was originally a NY great lake boat, then moved to Florida, and
eventually Lake Lanier (Near Atlanta). I believe I'm the 4th owner and I'm
fortunate enough to know the prior owners personally. I love to hear the
tales of Mahi caught off the walk through transom and how they sailed my
boat across the Caribbean all the way down to Tortuga.

We race the boat regularly and even my good racer friends love to hate us
on the race course. Comments like: "It's not fair to have a boat with a
wine cabinet out-point my sport boat" and "how much diesel did you burn to
go this fast in this little wind?", and "there should be a class just for
C's" abound. :-)

All that in a boat with a comfortable cabin for my family of 4 to spend
weekends. Another comment from a fellow weekender regarding our boat's
accommodations was: "I'm staying at Motel 6, y'all are at the Marriott"

I love that dual personality of the helm responding like my old 470's
tiller and the Marriott accommodations.

Thanks for creating such a fantastic package.

Best Regards,
Francois Rivard

Re: Stus-List Cutlass bearings

2018-09-27 Thread Ken Heaton via CnC-List
Here is a video, showing the generic tool and procedure. The tool isn't
that difficult to make if you have access to a drill press and a way to cut
metal plate. What they didn't show in the video is first finding and
loosening the set screws that hold the cutless bearing into the strut.
They can be difficult to find due to years of paint hiding them.
