Re: Stus-List baby on board

2018-09-28 Thread Jeffrey Nelson via CnC-List
I would second Graham's comments.  We sailed with our kids, one whom was
severely disabled.  I learned that a sailboat has
lots of places to hang an IV, and that we could still have a lot of
really good family times sailing and cruising.  Racing was out for a bit.
My daughter started sailing 6 months before she was born, and now at 20
has taken on a whole race team of her own.
We have lots of stories of cruising together and enjoy our time on the
water.

There is actually a pretty good book written by Lyndsay Green titled:
Babies Aboard for lots of ideas on sailing with kids.

It just requires some planning and modifications to behavior. I can
singlehand the boat, so my wife was (unfortunately living up to a
sexist generalization) on kid duty.  We put lifeline netting up all
around 'til he was 5, and bolted a car seat down in the v-berth.
Going for an afternoon sail we would sail with him in the cockpit for
a while, but then put him in the car seat with a bottle and blanket,
he'd sleep a couple of hours.

Lee clothes also make a great pseudo playpen and a snug place for
playing or napping.

I did once get a complaint that we were heeled over too far, his toys
kept falling over, and I did have recurring nightmares of having a
bilge pump clogged with Lego, but all in all an excellent experience
and he is now an excellent sailor.

Re: Stus-List Flying Thru Zincs and What the Heck Is This Wire?

2018-09-28 Thread Gary Russell via CnC-List
 Chris,
I've never seen a prop shaft grounded like that! I'm guessing it was
someones amateur attempt to solve a problem that was unsuccessful. Is the
boat connected to shore power? Often the problem is a difference in
potential between the ground wire coming from the dock and the water you're
sitting in. Milivolts are all you need to cause a problem. I would
install a ground isolator between the green wire coming from the dock and
your boats ground system if you use shore power. I'm on shore power and my
zincs last all season.

Stus-List Flying Thru Zincs and What the Heck Is This Wire?

2018-09-28 Thread Chris Hobson via CnC-List
I seem to replace zincs more than usual, perhaps a symptom of my Marina and the
proximity to tug boats who drop barges of gravel off on the other side of the
creek. Anyway I was snooping around the engine and discovered that the other
end of (what appears to be a ground) wire running from a steel tang resting on

Re: Stus-List C&c 34 Mast

2018-09-28 Thread Hoyt, Mike via CnC-List
Hi Rob

Should not be a lot different than the masts on Frers 33 and Sabre 34. We have
a mast cart that the middle of the mast sits on and then as few as 3 or 4 wheel
it to its destination. When we lift onto the rack 5 or 6 is nice.

Without a mast cart you would likely want at least 6 and probably more. The 34
mast is likely heavier than the Frers 33 but similar to the Sabre 34 in weight

Re: Stus-List C&C ownership

2018-09-28 Thread Doug Ellmore via CnC-List
I've been the owner the 1976 C&C 24 Red Sky #102 since 7/1/2016.

Beginning in 1979, it was Don and Jean Wagner who introduced me to sailing
on their C&C 30 MKI Red Baron on the West River and Chesapeake Bay . Don
and Jean, and their family where great to sail with and learn from.

When I took ownership of Red Sky she was setup for cruising and her sails
were well seasoned. But that did not stop us from quickly trying our hand
at racing.

Immediately in the fall of '16 did well. Since then, we continue to finish
well and even have won a few. Red Sky in morning, other sailors take
warning, Red Sky at night, is skipper's delight.

We are often the smallest and slowest yacht out there, so our motto is
attack from the back. We are getting better at sailing to the boats
strengths.

She needed some TLC, which we have done. We've also setup Red Sky for
single and doublehanded racing. New 3Di sails this year, too.

I plan to upgrade in the next year or so, leaving Red Sky for some who
wants to learn to race and overnight. It is now a very tunable yacht.

It has brought lots of fun to our family and raises the spirit of my soul.

Cheers,

Doug Ellmore, Sr.

Re: Stus-List Winter cover C&C 40

2018-09-28 Thread Marek Dziedzic via CnC-List
Patricia,

I had a cover made by the Quinte Canvas on my C&C 24. After a while, the fabric
got old and disintegrated in a few places. I kept the metal frame and used a
big, heavy duty, marine tarp. I don’t remember the dimensions, but it was
probably 30’ x 24’. You need a few feet extra on the bow and stern. For the
width, you need the beam plus 2 times the height of the highest support. This
should give you enough canvas to drop well below the deck to hull joint. Then
you have to find the tarp that is the right size (probably a bit larger). If it
is too wide, it would be dragging on the sides. For your boat, I would go for
something like 45’ long (at least) and about 30’ wide.

The tarp like that should not cost more than around $500-$600, I think. Though,
the larger tarps might cost more. Just checked and our local Chandlery sells a
30 x 48 tarp for USD $525 ($700 CAD).

Of course a custom made cover is so much nicer.

her for 13 years with my family. She was a terrific racer/cruiser!!
As the family grew up and kids wanted to bring friends, we decided to step up
and purchased a 1986 C&C 41 CB, naming her Der Baron. We have now raced/cruised
her for 32 years on the Chesapeake Bay.

I have a room full of trophies and photos, a garage full of old sails, and many
fond memories and tales to share with family and crew.
They both have been wonderful family boats and I’ve never regretted our choice.

Stephen, a baby on board can be readily done.  We bought our first boat when my
wife was pregnant, using the logic that we'd be too exhausted and full of
excuses after the baby arrived.

It just requires some planning and modifications to behavior.  I can singlehand
the boat, so my wife was (unfortunately living up to a sexist generalization)
on kid duty.  We put lifeline netting up all around 'til he was 5, and bolted a
car seat down in the v-berth.  Going for an afternoon sail we would sail with
him in the cockpit for a while, but then put him in the car seat with a bottle
and blanket, he'd sleep a couple of hours.

Lee clothes also make a great pseudo playpen and a snug place for playing or
napping.

I did once get a complaint that we were heeled over too far, his toys kept
falling over, and I did have recurring nightmares of having a bilge pump
clogged with Lego, but all in all an excellent experience and he is now an
excellent sailor.

I have owned DejaVu, a 1990 34/36 for the past 7 years.  She is my third C&C
before her a 24' then another 34'.  We sailed the hell out of her all around
the Gulf of Mexico but now she sits on a custom trailer in Pensacola Shipyard
Marina.  The birth of a child will do that to you ;)   Thought long and hard
about parting ways with her but I cant do it, so she remains sidelined and
dearly missed for all the great adventures she surely brought to us all who
sailed her.  Maybe I will bring her up to Lake Lanier and someday give her to
my son Max, who is 2 years old.

Stephen,

Take a look at YouTube channel sailing Britaly. They are live-aboards and have
a 6 month old baby.

I’m not sure if this is your first child, and if so, I can understand the
parental learning curve and protectiveness that comes with it. I can assure you
it never goes away.

We have 2 (girl boy) still quite young, and they are totally at home in the
boat. They’re mobile and bounce around like there’s no tomorrow. We all learned
together and ingrained some very basic safety rules.
