Stus-List Maintenance that makes the boat work easier

2021-01-26 Thread CHARLES SCHEAFFER via CnC-List
I'd like to share something most of you know but some may not and it's
something I learned the hard way. Before hoisting sails for the first time
this season, check that all your blocks and deck organizer sheaves turn
properly and the sail tracks are clean. Use a finger to check that the sheave
turns freely in each block. Things work easier if everything actually works,
and if you do this the sails will thank you.

Earlier I reported that I raise the mainsail on my 36 ft saiboat by hand. Well
I couldn't do that when I first got my boat and needed to use a winch on
halyards. My sailing friends told me that was normal and winches were always
necessary to hoist such large sails. My mainsail weighs only 55 to 60 pounds,
so I thought they might be wrong. Later, I spent some time checking all of the
mast base halyard blocks and freeing a few frozen sheaves in the deck
organizer, I found I could raise the mainsail by hand very easily. These
sheaves are deceptive when frozen and allow a halyard to pass unimpeded
initially when there is no load, but once the strain comes on, if they are
frozen, the halyard becomes bar taught and the job requires a winch. I also
learned from reading the winch catalog that the largest loads; the genoa and
main halyards work best if reeved along the most direct path to the right side
of a winch drum. So now I pick the clutch directly in line with the right side
of
the Starboard winch drum for my main halyard. All my winch drums turn
clockwise. My genoa halyard is reeved through the clutch directly in line with
the right side of the Port winch drum. I run the spinnaker halyards through
the outermost clutches and all the other lines have lower loads so can be run
as you like. And I label the clutches.

I also hoist the Genoa by hand onto the furler and because I clean the foil
grooves and spray the sail tabbing with MackLube, it goes up pretty easily.
The lube also allows easy adjustment of the halyard tension when shaping the
sail while sailing. I usually pick a lightwind day and extend the genoa
halyard so I can wrap the tail round the winch drum and lead it to the bow
where I feed the sail into the groove as I pull the halyard. I can clear any
snags as they develop and the sail goes up happy and quick.

So clean and lube your winches and the clutches too.
Mark your halyards so you can repeat proper settings.
These things make operating the boat so much easier.

Sorry for the long rant.

2021-01-26 Thread CHARLES SCHEAFFER via CnC-List
FWIW, My main's sail slides are nylon and I spray the mast groove with
MackLube and I sail solo 90% of the time. I hoist the main from either the
cockpit or at the mast by hand. I use a winch to put the final tension on the
luff, but not to hoist it up. Hoisting by hand is so much faster. The sail
weighs 60# but I'm not pulling the entire weight until the head is very near
the top of the mast. (My main is 330 Sq Ft compared to a 44's 410 sq ft.)

Dwight,

This is why I don't like an electric winches in the first place. If all works
well, the electrically propelled winch is a great tool. But if there is a
problem, especially, if hoisting a person, all bets are off.

I like the Davis instruments; they are well made and long lasting, which is
a rarity these days. I had an old spare unit installed at home for a while
but decided to sell it, as there are enough local stations near me that I
don't need it. When I was working, we hosted one of the local stations for
the Island Weather research project out of UVic. Some really interesting
weather data can be collected when you have dozens of these units spread
across an area:

Unless your boat never leaves the slip, I would not personally do vinyl plank
flooring. I work in multifamily development (apartment buildings) and we have
miles of vinyl plank installed in our projects. While it is a great product, I
think it would not provide great footing at any kind or heel and it would be
difficult to finish the edges precisely and aesthetically. It also 'moves'
quite a bit, i.e. expands and contracts so that when it is installed one has to
leave 1/4"-1/2" gap at any fixed element, like a wall or cabinets, which is
covered by the wall base trim. This allows for the vinyl to expand and not push
up when constrained.  It is also heavy, even for our not lightweight boats.

Hi,
This is not C related, but certainly sailing-related…
I have a general question to anyone who is involved in running a
weather station for the sailing club (or similar). Our Club had
various weather stations over the years, but the last one failed about
a year ago and we did not have anything this season. I was asked to
investigate what we could use.

I have two options already: Davis Vantage Pro 2 and WeatherFlow Tempest.
Davis w/s is reasonably high-end, but it also has a rather high-end
price. WeatherFlow is very new, has very attractive pricing and no
moving parts.
This will be a Sailing Club w/s, so the most important parameters are
wind speed and direction; anything else is a bonus.

Hi,

This is not C related, but certainly sailing-related…

I have a general question to anyone who is involved in running a weather
station for the sailing club (or similar). Our Club had various weather
stations over the years, but the last one failed about a year ago and we did
not have
anything this season. I was asked to investigate what we could use.

I have two options already: Davis Vantage Pro 2 and WeatherFlow Tempest.

Davis w/s is reasonably high-end, but it also has a rather high-end price.
WeatherFlow is very new, has very attractive pricing and no moving parts.

This will be a Sailing Club w/s, so the most important parameters are wind
speed and direction; anything else is a bonus.

Thanks

Stus-List Re: Kiwi Grip

2021-01-26 Thread Stephen Kidd via CnC-List
Applying kiwi grip has been the easiest thing I've ever done on a boat. We
did our cockpit non-skid areas a couple of years ago and it looks great. We
applied more to the cabin top after refinishing and rebedding the handrails
this spring. Since I plan on refinishing the rest of the cabin top and deck
non-skid, I did minimal prep as an experiment - just a rough sanding,
cleaning, and taping. I normally fret a lot about prep. The whole thing was
super quick with just the single coat. It looks great and no evidence of
any trouble so far. The fact that you most likely do not need a primer or
multiple coats makes it pretty economical, especially considering the time
savings.

My only gripe is that rougher textures can be a little hard to keep clean,
but that doesn't seem unique to kiwi grip. There are tons of great videos
and info on getting various textures. I went with a foam roller on the
cabin top to get a smoother look.

The kiwi grip I got last spring came in plastic pouches instead of cans.
You just squeeze it out as you go, and it keeps very well. It's actually
pretty fun.

Stephen

been from sun/rain exposure over the two years. The black substrate makes up
the bulk of the thickness and is the EVA foam I believe. While it is still

grey was left  and now the aesthetic is a uniform black.   I have considered
re-applying with a solid color grey or similar and not the faux weathered teak.
I can not justify at this time the Raptor Deck expense, but would say that it
is a superior product.    I do think this budget material would work great down
below and would have many benefits. The only caveat being that dust and grit
obviously will seek the low point in the profile and so you will probably need
a dustbuster handy in lieu of the standard dust pan.    KD

Hi,

The cockpit antiskip is long overdue on our 1987 33-2 and even with really good
deck shoes it is now just unsafe. Our plan is to cover the cockpit sole,
benches and bridgedeck with 5 mm light grey. The templates are made and both
companies (Seadeck and Raptor) do custom work. You send theme the templates and
they send you a quote. But before i send them my precious templates,  I would
like to have a ballpark estimate, anybody on the list that have done the same
and could give me a rough estimate. It could be from a C 29 to a let's say 37.

I have sailed on boats where the cockpit sole was covered with Raptor deck as
antiskid. I loved the feel of it and the grip is really good and more comfy. I
would prefer this to paint.

I know i could also buy a sheet of the same stuff and cut it myself, but i want
it to look professional if the price is not outrageous.

Thank you!

2021-01-26 Thread Della Barba, Joe via CnC-List
My boat has 3 bilge pumps. I have electric pumps at the aft end of the bilge
and in the sump. The manual pump also runs to the sump. The get a 35 totally
dry you would need about 6 bilge pumps at least, the bilge does not flow evenly
to either end.
Offshore in rough conditions you pay for the speedy hull design, the low point
is frequently not the bilge at all and keeping water out of the lockers and so
on is a nuisance.

We are looking at doing the same. Our sole is pretty worn as well. That same

done this already.

Would love to see your before and after pictures as we have a 36 as well.
