I’ve seen some good prices on Amazon. The rechargeable battery from my handheld
Standard Horizon died and I am using AA now.

The price for the battery is about $95 and it is a n 8 years old unit. SO I
want one too!!!

Dammit, Joel. Now you started something. I was perfectly happy with my
handheld VHF until you got me looking at the new ones.

Mentioned it to the Admiral. She kinda likes the idea. We started asking
ourselves why we would need a handheld VHF with GPS and DSC. We have DSC, AIS,
all that stuff in the fixed unit. The only time we use the handheld is in the
dinghy.

We came up with a few justifications for the upgrade. Like:

* a health emergency while we were in the dinghy
* attaching it to a throwable and tossing it to a MOB
* keeping it clipped on the bowman in case he (me) goes overboard
* we can sell the old one on eBay
*   we just want one

C'mon listers, why else would we pop for a new handheld VHF?

FYI, I'd probably buy the Standard Horizon HX870 for $210.

As for the exhaust fitting. I f you can't find any I can make one or more if

With the reverse angle on the transom, I understand there can be issues
installing the straight through transom fitting that came with the kit. I
found the following angled fitting available in the UK. Anyone know of a

If you have to replace the prop, this might be the time to upgrade to a folder.
I recently replaced mine with a 2 blade Flexofold. Better speed under sail in
light air, improved reverse thrust.

Not cheap, but if you have to replace anyway, you're partway there anyway.

My shaft is 7/8 with an SAE standard taper for the prop.

I'll make it sailing related. being nearsighted as well, I have 'split
vision' contacts. One for reading (almost) and the other for distance. But,
this screws up sighting the distance to marks, because the perspective is a bit
off.

But, as you 'young 'uns' get a little older, the distance problem gets a bit
better and the reading problem gets worse, so both of my lenses are getting a
bit weaker which is helping the perspective problem, however, my reading
problem is getting a bit worse. I dread the day when I won't be able to read
the chart or chartplotter without reading glasses. Then, I may have to rethink
this whole deal.

In the meantime, I can get by with 'readers' from the store and 'regular'
sunglasses. So, the losing problem is less costly (as I dump the sunglasses
every so often into the drink or break them, and lose so many readers that I
buy them in bulk). One on the workbench in the shop, one at my desk, one at the
model boatbuilding bench in the basement and one by the TV, so I can read the
listings and the fine print in the newspaper.

Subject: Stus-List Yanmar 2GMF13 parts help

A friend bought a 1983 model CC with a Yanmar 2GMF13, serial number 05337. The
engine has run great during the delivery to North Carolina, so I have no issues
at the moment. But I am trying to help my friend get set up with parts and get
any maintenance oversights by the PO taken care of.

Is there any way to figure out the age of the engine based on the serial
number?

I have an Operating/Maintenance manual for the engine, along with an
aftermarket service manual of somewhat dubious quality. Yanmar doesn’t appear
to put the parts manual on line for easy access. Does anyone know where I can
find a PDF version of a parts manual? Or a real Yanmar service manual?

The maintenance manual shows a cooling system zinc in the back of the engine,
and calls for replacement every 250 hours. I found a part number of
27210-200300 on the Mack Boring site, and that looks like a Yanmar part number.
Does anyone know if it is correct? And I seem to recall conversation about
there being two zincs on the Yanmar marine engines. Is there another zinc that
should be replaced?

An oil and filter change is high on the maintenance list. The Yanmar manual
calls for straight 30 or 40 weight oil. I’ve only ever used Rotella 15-40 in
diesel engines. Is there something about the engine that makes a single
viscosity oil essential or preferable to a multi-grade oil? Maybe the small
(only 2 liter) oil capacity?

Just because charts are digital doesn't mean they are accurate.

Many digital charts are based on soundings that may literally be hundreds of

I was in Panama this summer and my Navionics gold charts would have had me
drive over a bunch of reefs if I had let them. (I used paper charts from the
cruising guide which were spot on)

I'm not sure what the chart accuracy is in that part of the world, but if
there was any question of dodgy charts, the race committee ought to have given
that area a wide berth. It would have been simple to set up a waypoint well
offshore in deep water. Putting people at risk that way is irresponsible,

I am in need of the lists' collective institutional knowledge; I bought two
teleflex gauges; one for oil pressure, and the other Water temp; I need to
order the sending units;
I have a 1985 Yanmar 3HMF (1985 CC 37); the engine has never had these
gauges; I called the tech dept for teleflex; they gave me a Sierra Part
number for the oil gauge sender; (18-5899), but
for the water temp gauge they tell me I need to know the thread size for
the engine to know which sending unit to purchase; there are four different
units; (18-5896; TS-1/4-18; TS 3/8-18; TS 1/2-18)
I am not a mechanic and have no idea how to find this information; I do have
all of the Yanmar service manuals and parts manuals; is this information in
the manuals or how can I find this out? Many thanks

Re: Stus-List Bilge pump parts for C C 30-1

2014-11-18 Thread Letsgo Sailing via CnC-List
Antoine,

This was a history reminder and brought back childhood and youth memories. I
grew up using the BSW system and I still have a great collection of taps and
dies. As a machinist, I have to mention that the Whitworth system it is not
used any longer in GB or anywhere in Europe because it has been replaced and
pushed out by the Metric standard system. The good news is that you could
install a ANSI nut with a 60* thread to a whitworth bolt but not the
opposite. Use a bit of antiseize compound and it will be fine. The only
thread that it is not possible to replace with the north American standards
is ½” thread. The northamerican is 13 threads per inch and the whitworth is
12 TPI.

If you any more assistance let me know the size of the nut which I don’t
think is larger than ¼” or 5/16” at the most and I’ll see what I can do.

I support all the recommendations to disassemble it first.

By the way, when I disassembled it, this simple pump taught an history
lesson.

It is a British made Whale Gusher, a very good pump. My only problem was the
nut, totally eaten out by corrosion. Simple, I'll find another nut. Well,
the nut I purchased didn't fit. Might be a metric one. Nope. Doing some
research, I found out that the nut coming from England was made using the
Whitworth standard, not available in North America. I contacted the importer
who wanted to sell me a kit for 70$. Are you nut? I won't purchase a 70$ kit
to replace a simple nut.

Ok, let's go on wiki, to find out that the Whitworth was the very first
standard for nuts and bolt.

The Whitworth thread was the world's first national screw thread
standard,[1]
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/British_Standard_Whitworth#cite_note-1
devised and specified by Joseph Whitworth
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joseph_Whitworth in 1841. Until then, the
only standardization was what little had been done by individual people and
companies, with some companies' in-house standards spreading a bit within
their industries. Whitworth's new standard specified a 55° thread angle and
a thread depth of 0.640327p and a radius of 0.137329p, where p is the pitch.
The thread pitch increases with diameter in steps specified on a chart. The
Whitworth thread system was later to be adopted as a British Standard to
become British Standard Whitworth. An example of the use of the Whitworth
thread is the Royal Navy http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Royal_Navy 's
Crimean War http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crimean_War gunboats. These are
the first instance of mass-production techniques being applied to marine
engineering as the following quotation from the obituary from The Times
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Times of 24 January 1887 to Sir Joseph
Whitworth (1803–1887) shows:

The Crimean War began, and Sir Charles Napier
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charles_Napier_%28Royal_Navy_officer%29
demanded of the Admiralty 120 gunboats, each with engines of 60 horsepower,
for the campaign of 1855 in the Baltic
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charles_Napier_%28Royal_Navy_officer%29#Baltic
_Campaign . There were just ninety days in which to meet this requisition,
and, short as the time was, the building of the gunboats presented no
difficulty. It was otherwise however with the engines, and the Admiralty
were in despair. Suddenly, by a flash of the mechanical genius which was
inherent in him, the late Mr John Penn
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Penn_%28engineer%29 solved the
difficulty, and solved it quite easily. He had a pair of engines on hand of
the exact size. He took them to pieces and he distributed the parts among
the best machine shops in the country, telling each to make ninety sets
exactly in all respects to the sample. The orders were executed with
unfailing regularity, and he actually completed ninety sets of engines of 60
horsepower in ninety days – a feat which made the great Continental Powers
stare with wonder, and which was possible only because the Whitworth
standards of measurement and of accuracy and finish were by that time
thoroughly recognised and established throughout the country.

An original example of the gunboat type engine was raised from the wreck of
the SS http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SS_Xantho Xantho by the Western
Australian Museum http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Western_Australian_Museum .
On disassembly, all its threads were shown to be of the Whitworth type.[2]

All is good and fine to do for winterizing following the list.

One thing very important is not to use alcohol RV antifreeze, the type you buy
at home depot or Canadian tire or Walmart.

It ruins the hoses. You need to use glycol based marine antifreeze. I use the
one made by or for mercury. It is plumbing antifreeze

Not cooling system antifreeze but safe for plastics rubbers and the rest.

Also it will be good for your engine to use fogging oil or storage seal spray.
If it is gas engine use the blue Sta-Bil in the fuel and it is ok. If diesel

Engine remove the air filter and while the engine is running restrict the
intake air with the palm of your hand and spray through and then kill the
engine. A bit smoky but will protect cylinders , valves and rings from rust.
And yes diesel when is left on raw steel or iron it creates surface rust and
pitting.

West Marine’s is great, but it is so long that by the time you finish, you may
have to start de-winterizing (;-). I use a much shorter one:

- change oil

- change oil filter

- change (check?) fuel filters

- change transmission oil

- clean and drain the strainer on the fresh water cooling intake

- drain the fresh water side of the cooling system and replace with RV
antifreeze (EG or PG?) paying extra attention to the Aqua-Lift muffler

- drain fresh water tank

- drain water heater

- prep all hoses in the fresh water system for winter (either blow them with
air pressure or put antifreeze in (or both)).

- pump out the holding tank

- pump antifreeze through the head

- stabilise fuel in the fuel tank (add stabiliser and potentially some
antibacterial agent)

- pump antifreeze through the bilge pump (pumps)

Potentially:

- replacing the impeller in the cooling system

- replacing the alternator/water pump belt

- removing the joker valve in the head

Related but specific to sailboats:

What is best practice (or acceptable practice) for preparing and storing sails
for the winter?

In the absence of a sail loft I can’t imagine a graceful way to clean dry and
fold the sails. Maybe step a mast in the back yard?

My sails are all fairly old but in decent shape and I would like to get some
more seasons out of them. In all honesty I don’t even have an accurate
inventory. There are sails in bags that I have never put my eyes on.

I think I can recognize a mylar vs. Kevlar sail but I have one that looks like
it is made of silk. Super light weight and fits into a bag less than half the
size of the others. Very colorful. Before I pull it out and try to fold it or
whatever I should do does anyone have any idea what it might be?

Last rookie question (on this post). What is a blooper? I really truly did
attempt to find the term on the interwebs without much success.

Just read through a few winterizing checklists and I'm about 90% done. Need to

setup the cabin cushions and rig my small tarp to cover the cabintop. I may
also wipe down the interior teak w Pinesol to prevent mold and mildew over the

Re: Stus-List advice on oil filter brands

2014-11-09 Thread Letsgo Sailing via CnC-List
Eric and Listers.

I found that synthetic fiber oil filters do the best job, therefore I used
WIX on my boat engines and I use large canister WIX in my cars and
motorcycles. At the same time I use AMSoil 100% synthetic which is THE
best oil to use on gas and diesel engines, keeps the engine clean and I mean
clean. Recently I rebuild two of my engines. One that had since new with
270 thousand Kms treated always as far as I can remember with synthetic oil,
and I one that I bought as spare. The one with synthetic AMSoil was as clean
as new.

Now that being said in an really old engine with a lot of contamination
synthetic oil will clean the buildup and might develop seal leaks.

oil filter and why Fram is widely considered junk. After reading this
article I started cutting open my used oil filters to make sure they were
built right. As a result I have a lot of confidence in the build quality
of Yanmar (OEM) filters.

manufacturer specs. From that you can also find larger filters (diameter x
length ~ media surface area) that will fit your application. I have found
filters for both my cars that are 25-50% larger allowing for more captured
contaminants before the bypass valve starts to open.

Hi David,

Glad you stayed aboard the list.

I don't think owning a CC qualifies us as experts to solve world problems, but
it impresses me more than sleeping at a Holiday Inn.

The real problem is today's TV news. It is polarized, pushing an agenda for
or against today's government and too focused on sensationalizing everything,
and they can only spend 2 minutes on each topic. Ebola threatens the whole
world, not just the US and Canada. I find news radio takes more time to
interview people in the know and is much more informative, since they allow
time to ask followup questions of their guests.

One thing missing from today's culture is listening to other people's
opinions, especially those who don't agree with our own views. That's why I
like this list. It is sometimes a bulletin board that attracts contrasting
opinions. And you don't have to read all the comments, use your delete key.

Nuff said, headed to my boat.

everything and remove everything. I used it for butyl too and uncured epoxy
that I use for the base insulators, it is a little expensive but works

But the question was what would remove butyl where it was not wanted.
Agreed varsol and paint thinner leave an 'oily film'.why wouldn't they,
they are petroleum based.

But varsol and paint thinner will remove butyl and will not harm your deck
paint any more than the splashing of diesel fuel we apply to our deck paint,
annually!

So clean any space that needs proper sealing, clean it after the butyl is
removed with TSP and/or acetone if the substrate can tolerate acetone.

What product would you recommend Mike use to clean his unwanted butyl ?

Ed, I don't think I have heard of Farley Mowat and I am sorry to hear he
passed.

I have watched that movie and it brought some old sad memories. I don't know
what you were expecting to see.

I was in almost the same situation in a life-raft for three days after a
freighter run me over overnight between Malta and Sicilia. It was 1976 That
movie was not an adventure to watch over a bowl of popcorn, it was about

Farley Mowat also had the distinction of being banned from the U.S.
He was getting on a plane in Toronto for a book tour in the U.S. when he was

Re: Stus-List Mast Self-Climbers?

2014-10-16 Thread Letsgo Sailing via CnC-List
I bought ATN top climber few years back at the Annapolis boat show. I used
it once to try it. It worked well in the marina on a calm day. A change for
a plain bosun's. A bit tiring after half mast climb. Would not be helpful
for solo out in my travels. I installed mast steps and save me a lot of
aggravation when I really needed to climb up the mast fast.

The ATN top climmer has worked pretty well for me but I would not buy one.
The TC is simply two Gibbs ascenders attached custom bosun's chair and 60'
or 70' of 1/2 rope.

They arrangement of the ascenders is such that the chair is attached to the
top on and a foot strap is attached to the bottom one. Standing up on the
foot straps allows you to raise the upper ascender which brings the chair
tight to your butt. Sit down in the chair and now you can bend your knees
to raise the lower ascender. You inchworm your way up the rope. The rope
that was tied to the mast collar on deck and winched taught to the top of
the mast. One could safely use a halyard pull the rope tight. Tight is
key. No stretch rope is also key.

I would look to MAKE a similar system but using rock climbing ascenders
(gibbs or otherwise). I would also use a rock climbing harness as a primary
and maybe take a comfortable bosun's chair of choice to the top IF I was
going to be there for more than 10 min. The ascenders cost $30-50. Rope
$50-70. Harness $50-100. Gear can be found at EMS.com or instore.

Re: Stus-List Butyl Tape vs 4200: Front hatch Rebed

Kevin,
I used both at different applications. For hatches and other deck to metal
(stainless or aluminum) like stanchions and fittings I prefer butyl tape,
stays live and it is done properly on a clean surface lasts a long time. I
found that butyl must not be exposed to sun or UV rays. It dries and pills
off dragging out the softer sandwiched material as opposed to the 4200/5200
that will stick an will never get it out again.

You might be well advised to look at Sailboat Owners forum, where this has been
discussed multiple times (e.g. here:
http://forums.catalina.sailboatowners.com/showthread.php?p=1149325
http://forums.catalina.sailboatowners.com/showthread.php?p=1149325highlight=solar%20panel
highlight=solar%20panel). Also, a good read here:
http://www.pbase.com/mainecruising/solar_panel.

There are various reports on using the cheap panels vs. the high quality
expensive. Apparently, the expensive ones are most often produced in the same
factory, on the same production line; however, they are thoroughly tested, so
that all cells are working properly and produce equal amounts of energy. The
cheap ones are the ones that did not make it through that QA.

Don’t skimp on controller(s). There are well documented reports showing that
some can deliver substantially more energy (15% or even 20% more), which is
especially important if you are using the solar panels to top up your batteries.

From what I read, GenaSun controllers have the best opinion (price per
performance). Morning Star controllers (supposedly) are also quite good (this
is what I have).

Some controllers offer dual battery connection (with 50-50 or 90-10 split). If
I were doing it again, I would install a simple controller (going to the house
side) and an Echo Charger to charge the starting (spare) battery, as needed.

I don’t think you need a “dump load”, if you connect it directly to the
batteries.

If you use multiple controllers, you will have some fun in controlling them, as
they would see the wrong voltage on the battery (they would see the combined
voltage of all controllers; rather than the battery itself). However, I don’t
think you need any diodes, as they all have this protection built in (so the
battery cannot feed the panel).

have fun

Hey folks,

I'm looking to add solar panels to my boat. I have a new hard top dodger that
will be a great place to mount some flexible panels. I realize that attention
will have to be given to the boom so that it's shadow it minimized. I've given
consideration to the fact that some shadow is likely inevitable. My
understanding is that one large solar panel can have a substantial drop in it's
output or be completely disabled if only a relatively small shadow is cast. As
such I am planning for 4 smaller 50w panels instead of 2 100w panels. The idea
being that a small shadow will only disable 1 or 2 of the panels at a time.
This design also adds reliability such that a mechanical or electrical failure
of a single panel doesn't disable the entire system. Additionally, a smaller
panel is easier to replace and cost less.

To ensure reliability I was also planning to NOT creat an array of series and
parallel panels going to one controller but rather each panel to its own
controller. I believe the current recommendation is to use MPPT over PWM?

There is a wide range of prices for panels and controllers but I'm having a
hard time determining which ones are a good value. I know you get what you pay
for but over paying is silly. At the boat show, 50w, semi-flexible, 20%
efficient, monocrystalline panels were going for as much as $500! I've seen
charge controllers as high as $250. I know there are a few ebay haters here
but the comparable panels I found were $125 and 20A MPPT controllers for $11
with free shipping. Is there something I'm missing?

Besides disparaging comments about ebay or about me being cheap, does anyone
have any insights about the design or component selection.

I was originally pursuing a multi-channel controller but it seems no one makes
them.

When using multiple (4) controllers do they need to be diode separated from the
battery?

What about the dump load? I plan to use a single 200w resistive heater. Would
it need to be diode separated from each

I agree with either Lifeseal or Butyl. I used to use Lifeseal all the time, but

black and white butyl. I used to shy away from butyl for deck things because I
didn’t want the black runoff that sometimes occurs with black on deck/hull

I think you could use either in this case. If you choose butyl, order the

The butyl from RV stores tends to be stringy and doesn't work as well.

My opinion is if the deck hardware will move or flex, use butyl, otherwise
use a curing sealant such as LifeSeal.

How about rebedding the through hulls? Someone mentioned Sikaflex. Any
recommendations? I know I have to do one of them this off-season (probably
spring, though). The through- hull is marelon (if it matters).

Regarding the backflow valve and or check valve, it is not recommended to
install one. There is a great possibility that one day it will get dry algae
and will get stuck. Most likely this will happen when it is the last think you
want in your schedule.

Do you have a backflow valve in the discharge line? Until I put one in,

the water in the hose would flow back in and start the pump again. My line
from the pump to the back of the boat was about 15 feet long.

re Liability.

I seem to remember that the Westsail 32 that was abandoned during 'The
Perfect Storm' was actually doing fine by the captain, and it was the pickup
crew who went hysterical and called the USCG for rescue. The captain set
the boat up and tucked himself into the quarterberth and was ready to ride
it out. (One account says he took a bottle with him into the quarterberth,
and I would probably do the same thing under the
circumstances.)

My point being that he was taken off the boat because he was a licensed
captain, and disregarding a direct order from the USCG would cost him his
license. He didn't want to go.

It turns out he was right, and the boat ended up on the New Jersey shore in
very good condition.

Yeah, I would estimate many lives saved by the coast guard and life saving
services may be less than worthy of their valiant efforts. Darwin stated that
the strong survive, and the herd gets stronger that way. The prudent mariner
takes precautions, prepares his vessel, learns skills necessary to navigate and
operate his ship, but in today's world, every life has equal value and these
weirdos get saved by amazing CG members risking their own lives. I don't like
to judge but saving these idiots weakens the herd. My 2 cents.

Forget the supply of food and water and navigational challenges, forget even

You are absolutely right and you are not the exception. The licence is not a
requirement for someone who just wants to sail. There are few approved
courses around from basic to advanced for training and knowledge. There is
one thing I have learned and it is printed with permanent ink in my
forehead, Fear is the beginning of every great adventure and real training
starts when you turn your head aft and you realize that you lost sight of
land. But one needs to have a basic knowledge of sailing, weather and
survival. One needs to know how to read the horizon, the stars and the sun.

I own a full-keel version of this model and support the sailing characteristics

both the deck (outboard and astern of the chain plates) and hull (subsequently
repaired at considerable effort and expense); moisture could be the determining
factor in any purchase, so it may be worth a mini-survey before determining

Hi All, asking for advice on this model.

This boat “Freya is for sale. She is a centerboard model.

Can anyone advise on:

Suitability of 4’6” draft for Intracoastal/ Bahamas?

Does the boat go to windward well with a board? Does anyone race the CB
version?

Weaknesses? Is the hull cored or solid? I hear decks of this era are cored
and
have delam issues.

Suitability of this model for coastal use maybe Bahamas/ Nova Scotia/ Central
America? Not ocean.

Any variations of this model? For example were there tall VS short rig options
etc.

Many thanks,

David Dawes.

Re: Stus-List Online Captains License or class room?

2014-10-05 Thread Letsgo Sailing via CnC-List
Hello Sailors,

I am new to the list and like to greet all of you. I have been a member of
other lists like CYOA and Liveaboard for many years.

Some information will let you know that I have a sailor wannabe sing I was
born on my father’s custom build wooden sailboat while circumnavigating.
Since then somehow saltwater sipped into my veins and can’t get rid of it.
Long story short, due to unfortunate situations and steps forward I had to
sell my Columbia 8.7 a year and a half ago Christmas.

I set my eyes on an CC Invader 36 that needs a lot of work and it is
basically gutted with an old 3 cylinder Volvo with a hugemangus flywheel in
the front.

Any way nice to meet you all Captains and Admirals.

I just want to add to this conversation, if anyone of you is familiar with
manufacturing floor. Liability in Licencing is like yellow lines on a plant
floor. If they are laid out you have to abide by them, So, if you have a
licence you are lyable because you have training and

someone else said you should know better.

Which would you rather have, go fast goodies or shiny shoes?

Your feet may look good but if your engine blows you ain't going nowhere

I think Bob was trying to understand what the liability implications of
having more qualifications were.

Bob,

Think of it as a Power Squadron course on steroids. Most insurance providers
offer discount for such course.

I get a discount for being a qualified Officer of the Deck while in the US
Navy.

Fred, could you elaborate on this? I might be misunderstanding - not unusual
- but it sounds like having a CG/6-pack/whatever license increases one's
liability on the water. He should have known better, he was licensed.

Agreed on the 2nd point. And yes, there are still time-on-the-water
requirements:

I’ve been torn on the whole question of getting licensed; yes, you can
captain vessels for pay (deliveries, excursions, etc.). But even if you’re
not “on the clock” and are involved in an accident (like on your own
vessel), whether or not you’re at fault, there are some legal ramifications
that aren’t there if you’re not CG-licensed.

So I’ve held off on getting my ticket.

I always understood the on-the-water hours qualification was the more
limiting restriction. Is that not in place anymore?

I know a lot of licensed captains out there aren’t worth a damn. IE: It
takes more than just passing a test.
