Re: Stus-List : new boat, 1985 C&C 37

2013-12-12 Thread Richard N. Bush

Hello friends; I am happy to let you know that I have just received delivery of
my fourth (yes 4th!), C&C; a 1985 37; centerboard model. We had many issues
getting it trucked in from Newburyport, MA; mostly weather related, but some
delays due to the trucking company.

It is in pretty good shape, however, because we're in this deep freeze I wont
be able to make a really good assessment of what needs to be done until it
warms up a bit. I will have a million questions then!

A C&C is a novelty here on the Ohio River; the only ones anyone around here
have seen have been those which we have brought in; first we brought a 1982 25
from Austin Texas; then a 1985 29-2 from Cleveland; then a 1987 33-2 from
Jacksonville, Fl, and now the 37; the 29 went to Tennessee, but the 25 is
still here; and of course the 33-2 is up for sale-I am what the realtors call a
"motivated seller"!;

The local guys asked me why I stayed with the C&C; I thought about it;
originally I bought the 25 without knowing anything about C&C's other than a
general reputation for being quality boats; after I had the boat a while, I
was impressed by the workmanship on the 25 so when I wanted to move up, I
looked at the 29s; then when we wanted something bigger, I went for the sailing
ability of the 33-2; now, I figure I have enough research knowledge (mostly
through the collective wisdom of this group) and hands-on experience that I
couldn't go wrong in staying in the C&C line. The truth is, I looked at other
brands and simple kept coming back to the C&C; as someone said in the recent
thread about taxes; the C&Cs are the best bang for your buck and they sail
better than anything else out there.

Many thanks,

Richard

Congrats on finally getting the boat, Richard! Like you, I knew C&Cs from
way back--my dad had a 27 he bought new in 1971--and that experience put a
C&C at the top of my list when it came time to buy a boat I could cruise.

Re: Stus-List : new boat, 1985 C&C 37

2013-12-13 Thread David Jacobs
Richard,

I too just bought a new to me C&C, a 1984 35 MK III.

Interestingly, I was always a Pearson guy. My last boat was a Pearson 10M
and like you and C&C I was really comfortable with Pearson, thought it gave
me the biggest bang for the dollar and found it hard to change.

The idea of a cored hull was always a big hurdle for me. But when I found
this particular C&C 35 MK III it was in such unbelievably good condition
that it lure me away from Pearson. I hoping that I become as comfortable
with the C&C brand as I was with Pearson.

Regards to you and all the other C&C owners out there of which I am now one
of,

Dave

Hello friends; I am happy to let you know that I have just received delivery
of my fourth (yes 4th!), C&C; a 1985 37; centerboard model. We had many
issues getting it trucked in from Newburyport, MA; mostly weather related,
but some delays due to the trucking company.

It is in pretty good shape, however, because we're in this deep freeze I
wont be able to make a really good assessment of what needs to be done until
it warms up a bit. I will have a million questions then!

A C&C is a novelty here on the Ohio River; the only ones anyone around here
have seen have been those which we have brought in; first we brought a 1982
25 from Austin Texas; then a 1985 29-2 from Cleveland; then a 1987 33-2 from
Jacksonville, Fl, and now the 37; the 29 went to Tennessee, but the 25 is
still here; and of course the 33-2 is up for sale-I am what the realtors
call a "motivated seller"!;

The local guys asked me why I stayed with the C&C; I thought about it;
originally I bought the 25 without knowing anything about C&C's other than a
general reputation for being quality boats; after I had the boat a while, I
was impressed by the workmanship on the 25 so when I wanted to move up, I
looked at the 29s; then when we wanted something bigger, I went for the
sailing ability of the 33-2; now, I figure I have enough research knowledge
(mostly through the collective wisdom of this group) and hands-on experience
that I couldn't go wrong in staying in the C&C line. The truth is, I looked
at other brands and simple kept coming back to the C&C; as someone said in
the recent thread about taxes; the C&Cs are the best bang for your buck and
they sail better than anything else out there.

Many thanks,

Richard

Bill, we usually get going right after Memorial; river conditions dictate the
timing more that anything...; I didn't know there were any fellow
C&C-ers so close by; we get to Cincinnati fairly often, I would like to meet
up with at some point if possible; and compare notes! Who knows, maybe we can
invite the folks from St. Louis and have a Midwest rendezvous!

Richard,
I am in Cincinnati, my boat, a 36, in Michigan. When does your spring series

A C&C is a novelty here on the Ohio River; the only ones anyone around here
have seen have been those which we have brought in; first we brought a 1982 25
from Austin Texas; then a 1985 29-2 from Cleveland; then a 1987 33-2 from
Jacksonville, Fl, and now the 37; the 29 went to Tennessee, but the 25 is
still here; and of course the 33-2 is up for sale-I am what the realtors call a
"motivated seller"!;

The local guys asked me why I stayed with the C&C; I thought about it;
originally I bought the 25 without knowing anything about C&C's other than a
general reputation for being quality boats; after I had the boat a while, I
was impressed by the workmanship on the 25 so when I wanted to move up, I
looked at the 29s; then when we wanted something bigger, I went for the sailing
ability of the 33-2; now, I figure I have enough research knowledge (mostly
through the collective wisdom of this group) and hands-on experience that I
couldn't go wrong in staying in the C&C line. The truth is, I looked at other
brands and simple kept coming back to the C&C; as someone said in the recent
thread about taxes; the C&Cs are the best bang for your buck and they sail
better than anything else out there.

Many thanks,

Richard

Congratulations Richard! We've had ours for 17 years now and have loved it.
Pretty sure you will to. If you get around to the Chesapeake Bay stop by and
tie up.

Also, if you ever need old used parts I've got a bunch lying around. ;-)

2013-12-14 Thread Richard N. Bush

Dave, thanks, send me you list, I'm ready!

One thing I've noticed already is that the gear shift lever is on the aft side
of the helm station, rather than on the port side, which is what I am used to;
I recall that recently someone changed the shift lever from the aft to the side
and it apparently wasn't a major ordeal; what do you have and do have and what
would you recommend?

Re: Stus-List : new boat, 1985 C&C 37

2013-12-14 Thread Tom Lynch
Richard,

Congrats on your new boat. I'm in the market for my first C&C. Growing up
my family owned a C&C 25, C&C 34, and I raced on a C&C 35 MK II.

I'm looking for a boat for Bayfield WI on Lake Superior for my young
family, I have two boys age 7 and 4. My search has narrowed to the 33
MKII, perhaps you can express opinion on the merits of the 33 for a family
boat.

I'm interested in fixed keel model, I assume the 33 you are selling has the
shoal draft. I see a listing for a 33 MKII in Kentucky with a shoal draft.

As understand it, the 33 MKII has issues with the mast step / keel sump.
Did you encounter this with your boat? If yes, what is involved in this
repair as for as cost and complexity?

I appreciate any insight that you might have.

Tom Lynch.

Congrats!

I could see this coming after the comments you were making when you came
home from the Rendezvous a year ago.

I think you should have just jumped right to the Landfall 48 and save

Hello friends; I am happy to let you know that I have just received delivery
of my fourth (yes 4th!), C&C; a 1985 37; centerboard model. We had many
issues getting it trucked in from Newburyport, MA; mostly weather related,
but some delays due to the trucking company.

It is in pretty good shape, however, because we're in this deep freeze I
wont be able to make a really good assessment of what needs to be done until
it warms up a bit. I will have a million questions then!

A C&C is a novelty here on the Ohio River; the only ones anyone around here
have seen have been those which we have brought in; first we brought a 1982
25 from Austin Texas; then a 1985 29-2 from Cleveland; then a 1987 33-2 from
Jacksonville, Fl, and now the 37; the 29 went to Tennessee, but the 25 is
still here; and of course the 33-2 is up for sale-I am what the realtors
call a "motivated seller"!;

The local guys asked me why I stayed with the C&C; I thought about it;
originally I bought the 25 without knowing anything about C&C's other than a
general reputation for being quality boats; after I had the boat a while, I
was impressed by the workmanship on the 25 so when I wanted to move up, I
looked at the 29s; then when we wanted something bigger, I went for the
sailing ability of the 33-2; now, I figure I have enough research knowledge
(mostly through the collective wisdom of this group) and hands-on experience
that I couldn't go wrong in staying in the C&C line. The truth is, I looked
at other brands and simple kept coming back to the C&C; as someone said in
the recent thread about taxes; the C&Cs are the best bang for your buck and
they sail better than anything else out there.

Many thanks,

Richard

Tom -

Ditto. Like Fred, I'm in the Bayfield area too. Based on comments, I'm
guessing you're familiar with the area. There are only a few 35's around
here, which one where you on? FYI - there's still a lot of good racing
going on with a pretty fun bunch of boats. Get a boat, bring the fam and
jump in when you can.Holler if you want to crew for a while. See links

Good luck with the search.

Thank you Pete. The C&C 35 MKII that I crewed on was the Exuma skippered by
Breck Lilyblad, This was way back in 1984 - 1990 when there numerous boats
in the 30 - 35 ft range. The Exuma was moored at Red Cliff marina then at
the AIYC. I'm not sure where this boat ended up, it may have been sold to
someone down in the Milwaukee WI area. I'd love to get my hands on it
and/or know what happen to it and whether or not it is still Sailing.
Anyone out there know where the Exuma is?

2013-12-16 Thread Pete Shelquist
Tom - I have no idea on Exuma, but that's a little before my time up there.
I know Chanterelle is still around, which I'm pretty sure is a 35MKII. I
can put you in contact with the owner if you want to go that route. They're
a couple slips over from us in AIYC. Great boat, but she needs a lot of TLC
though. and he's not willing to do it.

Adjidaumo and Beau Geste are still around too - which are from that era if I
recall.

I’m probably not going to be of much help there. I have the style of Edson
pedestal that has the shift lever to port and the throttle control to

I am completely replacing the pedestal with a 402 series Edson pedestal.

looked at the 29s; then when we wanted something bigger, I went for the
sailing ability of the 33-2; now, I figure I have enough research knowledge
(mostly through the collective wisdom of this group) and hands-on experience
that I couldn't go wrong in staying in the C&C line. The truth is, I looked
at other brands and simple kept coming back to the C&C; as someone said in
the recent thread about taxes; the C&Cs are the best bang for your buck and
they sail better than anything else out there.

Many thanks,

I have the same shifting set up. It’s not worth changing. Just like your set
up, It’s still up for going forward and down for going back.

I’m probably not going to be of much help there. I have the style of Edson
pedestal that has the shift lever to port and the throttle control to
starboard. They both work in the vertical plane in a box aft of the pedestal
proper and the cabling runs in stainless steel tubing outside also. In my case,
I am completely replacing the pedestal with a 402 series Edson pedestal.

My original pedestal should come free sometime next summer…

Best,

Dave

I recall that recently someone changed the shift lever from the aft to the side

Congratulations Richard! We've had ours for 17 years now and have loved it.
Pretty sure you will to. If you get around to the Chesapeake Bay stop by and
tie up.

Also, if you ever need old used parts I've got a bunch lying around. ;-)

Cheers,

Dave

Re: Stus-List : new boat, 1985 C&C 37 (Now: pedestal info)

2013-12-15 Thread Rick Brass
I have the same arrangement on my mid-70s 38. And I, too, consider that
changing to a newer style pedestal isn't worth the time, trouble, and
expense.

If you replace the pedestal you need to repair and refinish the cockpit
sole. The current arrangement gives you much more room for running wiring
for instruments from the binnacle down through the pedestal tube.
Changing/servicing the throttle and shift cables is easier on my old
arrangement. I have a really neat teak on bronze removable shift lever (for
which I was able to buy a spare on EBay for about $10). And Edson is REALLY
proud of the new pedestal, judging from the price. Since there is no real
gain in space or functionality, I decided "Why bother?".

Now if I won the Mega Millions last night, I might change to one of the
square pedestals with a single lever than controls both shift and throttle.
But I'm not even sure I'd do that.
