On the recommendation of the guy who does most of th ework I can't do myself,
we used Alexseal 2-part paint. Alexseal is an alternative to Awlgrip or Imron.
William reports very good results, and uses it for most of the paintwork he
does. Comes on a pretty wide range of colors, one of which was a bit darker
than the faded smoke white of Imzadi's hull and might be a close match to the
original C color. One big advantage of the Alexseal paint is that it is about
half the cost of Awlgrip. My cost for getting the boat prepped and painted
(white topsides, triple red boot stripe, red cove stripe, red transom) was
$125/foot - about $4800.

The paint has held up very well. Have had some black streaks from black
rubstrips on an floating dock that washed right off. Had one scratch from a
bolthead sticking out of a piling, which turned out to be an easy repair using
some surplus from the original paint. The red transom shows no signs of fading
yet.

Maintenance is to wash every 3 to 6 months with mild soap and water, and to
wash annually with a product they sell which I presume is similar to Awlcare.
BTW, the Alexseal website also lists other alternatives to their maintenance
product - one of which I recall is made by Meguiars and is available from my
local West Marine.

In all honesty, there was one small problem when the boat was painted. When
they sprayed the red for the boot stripes and cove stripes over the white hull,
the thin red paint leached under the edge of the green 3M masking tape amd left
a fuzzy edge. So William had to touch up the white, remask the stripes with
this fiendishly expensive 3M gold masking tape, and reshoot the red stripes. No
problem using the higher quality tape.

I had my topsides painted with awlgrip 3 years ago. It looks fantastic and
maintenance is pretty straight forward It takes a lot less effort than
gelcoat in the spring. I follow the recommended cleaning and protection 2x
per season.

However, as I found out while docking single handed in a very high
cross-wind, it can scratch easily. Also, if you shrink-wrap your boat in
the winter, you can't do that if you have awlgrip.

Callisto was rolled and tipped with Pettit EzPoxy (I think, that is the can
on the boat) in red about 4-5 years ago, and is not holding up well.
Polishing and waxing brought the colour back, but a few months into summer,
it was already showed signs of oxidation.

I agree on the comment about keeping gelcoat if you can, unless it's red.
In that case, trying to keep it bright will drive you crazy. Callisto came
with a letter from C to the original owner, dated 1979 (so 5 years old),
responding to his complaint about fading red gelcoat; they stated that it
was "normal".

She faces East in her slip, so the transom is baked in the afternoon sun,
and the starboard side is noticeably more faded than port; I suppose I
should rotate her to even things out...

easier to repair than AwlGrip.)

Wash it periodically with AwlWash and polish it with AwlCare. Sides still
look great. Seeing a bit of fading on the transom. In Touche' Pensacola

AwlCare polish to the transom much more often than the sides.

Coquina was painted dark blue in 1979 and again in 1985. The paint has
done well, no fading or anything, more like just gloss fading to not so
glossy. The boat *really* needs another paint job, but that is from
getting run into or other signs of use over the decades, not paint
failure. I am not sure I would do a dark color on a solid glass boat
again, you get solar heating in December and also July.

I applied Awlgrip to my topsides and deck in 2001. The ‘vivid red’ on the
topsides is fading but polishes up well in the Spring. I have had to repaint
the transom on my 29 Mk1 twice since then and I repainted the deck (offwhite)
in 2017.

I have received the "don't go with a dark color" advice many times, but if you
look at the vast majority of anything that isn't a form of white, they are
invariably Navy or Flag blue...and they look great!

 Thanks for all the responses thus far... (and keep 'em coming!);

Depends on who is doing the prep work? Is it being done in the yard or at a
proper Marine shop? Mine should have come in at under C$20K but I did a lot of
the deck removal, sanding and prep work. Actual cost was much higher (don’t
ask). I was quoted $25K for the deck by a Marine shop. The topsides would
have been about the same cost.

Really, labour is the major cost for the job in my experience. If you are down
south you could probably get the job done at a cheaper rate.

2020-03-06 Thread Andrew Burton via CnC-List
When I got Peregrine, my C 40, her topsides were painted Awl Grip Pearl
Gray. The paint was 10 years old when I sold her and still looked great. I
maintained the paint by washing it with a soft brush and Awl Wash every 3
or 4 weeks or so, and waxing with Awl Care at the beginning and end of the
season.
I really like Awl Grip for topsides or decks; it's fabulous paint. But I
would only resort to painting my topsides if I'd exhausted all efforts to
bring the gel coat back up to snuff. For a fiberglass boat, gelcoat is far
better. the gelcoat on my current boat is 25 years old and looks terrific.
No paint will last that long. But don't be fooled into thinking that
spraying on new gel coat over old will work. In that case Awl Grip is the
better choice, because you get a better bond with the substrate.

Re: Stus-List Painted/Awlgrip Hulls

2020-03-06 Thread Randy Stafford via CnC-List
Grenadine is going into her second season with a hull paint job done in October
2018. It was four coats of Interlux Brightside, rolled and tipped, with
successively finer sanding before each coat and successive thinning of the
paint each coat. I let the paint harden over the winter of 2018/2019, then put
on two coats of carnuba wax in the spring (after repainting the boot stripe and
putting her name decals back on). I hired the bottom and hull painting out to
a guy named Larry Hofarth whose business is named Sailboat Spa. Very happy
with his work, and how the boat looked last season (photos at
https://drive.google.com/open?id=1AgG7585KNUspS1W8TsyUGq8hFgeP997h
). He
power-sanded the bottom and put on two coats VC-17, and last summer he painted
the deck, cabintop, and cockpit for me while the boat was in her slip.

In the next few weeks I’m going to touch up a couple scratches and put on
another coat of wax. Too early to tell how well the paint job will hold up
over time.

This was at least her second paint job. I could tell from scratches before
getting her painted that a previous owner had put grey primer over the gelcoat,
then painted the boat her original red color. The original gelcoat had faded,
and the previous paint job was badly oxidized.

Cheers,
Randy Stafford

I had my hull painted dark green (previously black); it was not Awlgrip, but a
suitable Imron-like PPG paint as I recall; the cost for my 42 (about seven or
eight years ago) was around $7K; it was done outdoors, so there are a few minor
imperfections – but it looked great (lots of compliments); aside from a few
scrapes (mostly my human error), it has held up quite well; no maintenance
issues – I use a one-step cleaner/wax in the spring, like you might use for a
car, and I’m good to go. I can get the name of the paint if you would like.
As I recall, the painter chose the paint because it is relatively easy to do
repair work.

Good luck.
