Stu, it's US WaterCRAFT. They've been making my Shields and J/80 fast and beautiful for years and I know them well. In fact, Will used to sail with me on the Shields and sailed at least 25,000 miles with me on deliveries. He's a really good guy and one of the smartest people I know. My opinion is that they will do great things with the brand. I'm pretty excited they're involved. Good advice Marek, thank you.right now I have about 40 GB backed up on a 1 TB external hard drive that sits beside my HP desktop.never thought about it but that's not enough if real tragedy strikes. I can probably dump all of that to a memory stick and store outside of my home.mostly photos, music and documents I have written. Fred I am not exactly sure that is a good idea yet. Maybe Stu doesn't even know yet what will be covered by his insurance and he may get some things replaced with better than he lost. That takes time and usually it's a PITA dealing with insurance companies about claims. However, what I understand is that he won't be able to replace those precious personal belongings which got stolen and that there will be a lot of work involved with getting back to where he was with the website, but he seems determined to get on with that. Re: Stus-List Photo Album Update
My own experience at the office and at home suggests that, unless you need a daily data backup for monetary (you own a bank, lucky you) or legal (you live in a volatile world and get sued often) reasons, a simple weekly backup to an external, portable hard drive is entirely adequate for most small businesses and home computer setups. The frequency of the backup I generally make a function of how often the data is changed, the extent of the data and it's relative and monetary importance. I have become a big fan of NAS (Network-Attached Storage) boxes which quietly store the files and can back the data up to a USB hard drive whenever one decides that's a good thing to do. I'm just changing out our office's three-year-old 4 drive Western Digital RAID 5 box for a new 4 drive Synology unit. I'm also upgrading the LAN gear to gigabit speeds. All that change for less than 2 grand in a small architectural office with about ten work stations is very economical. We do weekly backups at a minimum and take the backup drives off site. No big deal. I looked into off-site net-based backup storage but we decided our way is more secure as we are in control of our own digital destiny. It's also significantly less expensive. The new boxes are also capable of doing a variety of useful functions such as site hosting and remote data access. Check out: http://www.synology.com/us/resources/getting_started.php?lang=us All this to say that Stu should be able to get up and running with only a moderate expenditure, and be protected against future major data loss with a bit of new gear and some due diligence. If only it were as easy to replace the lost memorabilia and undo the emotional distress. Spilt milk etc. I think there is a moderate financial middle road that will give Stu the support he needs to pursue his passion and also maintain the resource we have come to enjoy. I propose we give Stu and Gladys a bit of time to catch their breath and wait for him to tell us what will work best for all of us. This should not be a financial burden to anyone. Rich My concern is about loss due to fire or theft...I back up regularly to an external hard drive and to memory sticks, but stupid as I am sometimes I keep all of that back up in the same cabinet that my desktop resides in right here in my home. The frequency of the backup I generally make a function of how often the data is changed, the extent of the data and it's relative and monetary importance. Dear Stu and Gladys I was also saddened to learn of your recent ordeal. It seems that most of us on this list are aware first hand of the turmoil this has caused because we too have been down that same road at least once in our lives. Invasion of ones privacy and theft of ones belongings is all too common and often the culprits are not held to account and the belongings are lost forever. I don't know the best advice but I know that good strong people move forward and eventually get most of their belongings replaced and their lives on track again and I feel confident that you will do that too. I wish you all the best as you put things back in order and I want to thank you very much for all of your efforts over the years with this group of CC owners. It is a great group and we are very fortunate that you had the foresight and made the effort to get the ball rolling. That sounds like quite a series of unfortunate events indeed. If London police are as inept as mentioned, maybe you should put some ‘watch’ feelers up on your EBay Acct for your items – Crooks generally are not too bright, this technique brought down some upper level employees at a local school district hawking stolen AV and other type equipment. ☹ So sad – Also look on Craigslist. Crooks ARE kind of dumb. When I was running a marine consignment store we had a guy steal a GPS from Boater’s World and bring it to us. He left his work number – AT BOATER’S WORLD – as his contact ROFLMAO. If London police are as inept as mentioned, maybe you should put some ‘watch’ feelers up on your EBay Acct for your items – Crooks generally are not too bright, this technique brought down some upper level employees at a local school district hawking stolen AV and other type equipment. Bill Coleman CC 39 [cid:image001.gif@01CE2FBB.ED5FEE40] Subject: Stus-List Photo Album Update Updating the Photo Album is going to be pretty slow for a while due to an unfortunate incident. Gladys and I were away for a couple of nights and during that time, our house was broken into. We are still trying to determine what is missing but so far we have estimated close to $10,000 worth. My desktop computer, flat screen monitor, and accessories are gone – and almost all the software related to the Photo Album. All of the software and patterns for the decals, etc. is gone forever – at least they left the vinyl cutting machine. Fortunately the culprits did not value Gladys’ $8,000 worth of computerized embroidery machines and just left them alone. Mind you they broke one hoop for doing the hats and it is close to $100. They found every drop of alcohol in the house including the “bucket of booze” I won at Christmas time. I had a collection of 15 limited edition HO electric steam engines and every one is gone and will never be replaced or seen again. We had security in place and it was by-passed. They took the bulbs out the motion detection system, broke the door window and crawled in to remove a security bar preventing the door from opening. Sorry for the long blog – short part is we will be back up and running once the insurance companies decided on what value they are putting on the items. FWIW – don’t assume your house, car or boat is secure. Take every precaution you can and even then it will not be enough. Sorry to hear about the break-in Stu. Most stuff can be replaced, but it's a shame about the trains and personal stuff, and time lost dealing with theft. Thanks for keeping the website running. I checked and it's running fine. Stu and Gladys Our hearts and prayers go to you both at this most distressing time. The good news is you are both safe and unharmed. The bad news is much of your work efforts dedication and stuff are lost or compromised. The good news is you have lots and lots of friends on this site to help you rebuild J At the risk of repeating what you may already know, I offer a few thoughts: 1) Notify everyone you can about the break in. Police of course, but also all your financial institutions – especially credit cards. Identity theft is a real threat in this instance, so suggest you notify all credit bureaus so someone else can not open an account in your name. 2) Did you have any back up routine in play for your files? I learned a long time ago the value of daily backups for my old business and certainly recommend that for everyone on this list. If so that should be a big help in recovering data files. 3) Do you need help obtaining replacement computer hardware and software? Just holler We all could very easily be in your shoes – but you have all of us to help rebuild Chin up, smile on and carry forward John and Maryann Legacy III 1982 CC 34 Noank, CT From: CnC-List [mailto:cnc-list-boun...@cnc-list.com] On Behalf Of Stu Sent: Tuesday, April 02, 2013 11:59 AM To: CC Email List Subject: Stus-List Photo Album Update Updating the Photo Album is going to be pretty slow for a while due to an unfortunate incident.
