Could not agree more with Ken and Josh — give it a chance — you’ll LOVE the big 
wheel. You’ll find it’s very easy to drive the boat from both the rail and the 
helm seat and, as Josh mentioned, we are now used to stepping up and around to 
get behind it. And you can always get that Edson mount thingy to put it aside 
for long days at a dock, mooring or using the swim ladder. 

And, as Ken said, you should sail with it for a while, especially in anything

Hello all,
For those who dropped me a note with interest in my wheel, I'm not ignoring 
you!  I just haven't been back to the boat, and even when I do this weekend, 
will have little time to do anything other than finish up some maintenance 
before moving the boat. 

That being said, based on the comments here, I'll see how thing go through the 
delivery of the boat which will cover about 120 NM and 3 days.  In the end, I 
really expect that my wife will continue to want the smaller wheel, and we'll 
probably come back and offer it to folks here on the list first.  

Stay tuned, I should know more in about 2 -3 weeks time.

I lock the wheel shaft before I remove the wheel and then gravity keeps the key 
in place.  If the key does end up falling it only falls to the cockpit floor.  
I've considered rubber bands and pvc pipe sleeves.  I've even considered a shim 
in the keyway to make the key fit tighter so that friction prevents it from 
falling.  It's just not a problem which is bad enough to command enough of my 
attention to make it better.

My wheel is too big to store on the inside.  It is a little nerve racking
to hang the wheel on the outside... But I guess I've just gotten used to
it.  I used to tie the wheel with some rope just for extra security but I
don't even do that any more.  I do have a "spare" smaller wheel at home so
I guess if something happened it wouldn't be too bad to just run home for
the other wheel.   Our local marina diver would be able to recover the big
one pretty easily.

My elegant solution is electrical tape (as opposed to masking tape).  Also, my 
Edson rail mount does not get as tight on the stern pulpit tubing as I would 
like, so I store the wheel inside the pulpit (just in case).

Eric,

It isn’t elegant, but a bit of bearing grease on the key will typically hold it 
in place.  You can also give it a tap with mallet enough that it mushrooms very 
slightly at the edge.

Chuck brings up a good point to anyone wishing to acquire a cheap “big wheel”.  
Most European wheels with a straight shaft will have a 25mm bore rather than 
the 1” diameter on an Edson pedestal.  The Edson hub also has a 2 3/8” depth 
which allows the wheel nut to secure the wheel on the shaft. Shorter hubs will 
require that you make a spacer to take up the extra room.  Not only is the bore 
a factor, but most newer steering wheels are built with a bit of “dish” to 
allow them additional strength at the rim.  As such, you may find with a new 
Edson or Lewmar performance wheel that the rim will set further aft than your 
current wheel, meaning a slight loss of foot room behind the helm.

And it is always a good idea to make a “trial wheel” from cardboard, mount it 
on your pedestal and then make sure you can open all the lazarettes and lockers 
in the cockpit without first needing to take off the wheel.  Not as much of an 
issue with “T” cockpits, but older boats will be limited.

Stus-List Anyone need/want a really big wheel?

Let's make it unanimous...keep it.  The large wheel is great and 
there are few good spots to sit when under sail other than the 
rail.  And the large wheel makes that work.  Small one would 
[probably just not work.


As far as getting around it, you get used to that.  When I am at a 
dock for more than an over night, I pull the wheel and just set it in 
the trough adjacent to the non dockside lazarette and use a small 
bungie to secure it to the lifeline.  I also keep a little plastic 
clamp at the helm and use it to secure the key on the wheel shaft.  I 
picked up some square stock and made a few extra keys just in case 
one jumped overboard.  I also picked up an Edson quick release wheel 
nut

to make undoing it easier.


So just like when you were a kid, you gotta have a Big Wheel!

Could not agree more with Ken and Josh ? give it a chance ? you?ll 
LOVE the big wheel. You?ll find it?s very easy to drive the boat 
from both the rail and the helm seat and, as Josh mentioned, we are 
now used to stepping up and around to get behind it. And you can 
always get that Edson mount thingy to put it aside for long days at 
a dock, mooring or using the swim ladder.


And, as Ken said, you should sail with it for a while, especially in 
anything over 15 knots. Some pics:

A friend I raced with on an Express 37 had the hugh wheel.  After we figured 
how to get around it, we truly enjoyed the convenience of using it on the rail 
etc. as others have mentioned.My son has the large wheel on a Bene 10R and

I love the 60 inch wheel, but its too big for movement in the cockpit area; an 
alternate way is a folding wheel; I wanted a bigger wheel for my 29 some years 
ago and purchased a Lewmar 40 inch wheel...I love it and have kept it through 
three boats and still use it on my 37...

Bruce,
It may be wise to measure the diameter before posting.  The largest size wheel 
that fits a standard height Edson pedestal is 54" without having a wheel well 
cut into the deck.  Even then, clearances are tight at the pedestal base.  Also 
mention if the wheel has a straight or tapered bore for the wheel shaft.  
Finally take into account that wheels that large will cost well upwards of $100 
to ship anywhere in North America.  
Regardless, put it up on Boatlist.org.  I put two items on there this week and 
one has already sold.

We have a very large diameter wheel on our 37/40 and it is perfect for steering 
from the rail.  I'd try it for a while under sail before I got rid of it if I 
were you.

mount designed by edson specifically for storing the wheel on a pushpit rail.
