Stus-List Owners' Database

2019-11-04 Thread Stu via CnC-List
This is just a note to say that our owners’ database on the Photo Album has
been receiving new registrants on a regular basis. This is not just a
roll-call but a complete registry of owners and their boats.

At present we have owners registered from Australia, Canada, Estonia, Germany,
The Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Puerto Rico, South Africa, Sweden, United
Kingdom and the United States.

Owners are searchable by country and are displayed according to boat size. Now
you can locate and communicate with owners who may have similar boats and/or
equipment as yours.

Take a minute out of your busy schedule and register your boat.

Thanks

Thanks Stu, I registered the info for my boat. And I like the field for draft
(standard or shoal).

One comment: on the registration form the field label says "hull number" but on
the confirmation page it says "HIN". Initially I had put in "7" but I backed up
and put in 30007972 after seeing the confirmation page. I think it's valuable
to collect complete HINs for the boats in the database, so to eliminate
confusion it might be good to change the field label to "HIN" on the
registration form.

Thanks Again,
Randy

Re: Stus-List Owners' Database

2016-08-20 Thread RANDY via CnC-List
Hi All,

Yesterday I tried to send the below message to the list, but it was too big
because of the spreadsheet of known 30-1s I attached to the message. So I put
the spreadsheet at
https://drive.google.com/open?id=0B-NqAxQ6JxFTdFdscXlyQVNtWms . There is data
on 117 out of the ~800 built.

Once Stu gets the database back online, we current 30-1 owners on the mail list
can make sure the database includes our boats (I know it's missing info on some
of them, e.g. mine).

Stu replied to my message below but I'm not sure his reply went to the list. I
may have overshot the mark on complexity :)

So, Stu, back to the list of fields you mentioned below, would you consider
adding:
10. HIN
11. Draft (standard or shoal)
12. Rig (standard or tall) - if relevant; I don't know if any C boats ever
offered that choice
13. Spinnaker (yes or no)
14. Steering (tiller or wheel)
15. Engine

Thanks again Stu for everything.

And Rick Bushie - are you aware of this alleged 1970 30-1 in the database? Your
hull #1 is stamped 1971. I'm wondering what to make of that.

Cheers,
Randy

Hi Stu,

First, thank you so much for everything you do for this community. It's just so
awesome. Second, if you'd ever like help with the database or the website etc.
I could raise my hand (I'm a software guy).

Regarding the database design - since boats pass from owner to owner, it would
be ideal in my opinion to model the boat and the ownership separately.
Ownership is a relationship between a boat and a person, with a start and end
date. So I'd suggest a boat table with info about the boat, and an owners table
with info about owners, and an ownership table relating a boat to an owner,
with a start date and end date and boat name (since owners rename boats).

When I first got my boat I wanted to learn about its ownership history, but
could only find bits and pieces in documents that came with the boat, and from
talking to the immediately previous owner.

For the boat table I think it's most important to have good identifying
information about the boat: its model, and ideally its entire HIN or at least
its hull number and year. Sail number is a helpful additional identifier. Next
most important in my opinion would be the most fixed elements of the boat's
configuration: its keel or draft e.g. standard or shoal, its rig e.g. standard
or tall (if applicable) and whether it's rigged for spinnaker, how it's
steered, and its engine.

For the owners table I think the owner's name and contact information would be
most important. Next would be their location, and perhaps yacht club if
relevant. Those could be interpreted as the owner's current (or last known)
location and club, since people move and take their boats with them. It's
probably not worth making the model more complex to capture such moves.

The ownership table would be the valuable part. It would refer to a boat and an
owner, and associate the start and end date of ownership, and the name of the
boat under that owner. If the database had that, it could potentially capture
ownership history as a boat changed hands.

For what it's worth I attached a spreadsheet of known 30-1s and their last
known ownership information, cribbed from your owners list pages and from bits
of info gleaned off the mail list. There's probably some info in the
spreadsheet that's not in your database, and vice versa (for example I only put
the male owner's name in the spreadsheet). One thing that confused me is an
alleged 1970 30-1 in your database, whereas Rick Bushie on the mail list owns
hull #1 apparently, and it was built in 1971. How to reconcile?

Anyway thanks again for everything.

Re: Stus-List Owners database

Stu;

How are you coming with the owner’s database? Not trying to rush you, just
looking for a progress report and maybe a rough ETA.

If it’s not too late, I did think of a suggestion. I suppose I’m not the only
one who has never posted photos to Dropbox or one of the other photo sites, so
I don’t really have an “External photo link” to share. I see that the “Photo
Gallery” on the website has changed a lot since the last time I looked a owner
boat photos, and that the pictures of Belle and Imzadi are no longer there.
Which sparked my idea for an owners DB suggestion:

Is it possible to link the Owners DB and the Photo Gallery? Set up links so
photos uploaded on DB during registration would get posted as an album or a
file in the Photo Gallery. I suppose it might also be possible that registering
in the DB would also result in registration/access to the Photo Gallery (using
the same owner’s ID and same Password) so the owner could post additional
photos or files to the Photo Gallery. You could also leave the current External
Photo Link item in the DB for those who do have an existing photo location to
which they want to give access.

I know it might create a lot of additional programming, but thought it might be
nice to have photos of all the boats in the Photo Gallery, as it used to exist.

Another quick though, this time about the online registration form.

Adjusting the size of the data entry box to relate to the size of the data
field might clean up the form a bit and make it easier to enter data in the
desired manner. I don’t know what DB software you are using, so the entry boxes
may be already set that way, or might just be a default size.

An example of what I mean would be the line for Year, Length, and Model. It
currently wraps to two lines.

Year would be 4 digit numeric. Length would be typically 2 digit numeric, like
“38”. Model could be 6 characters to allow for “38C’ or “custom” for Ron
Casciato, or “Ketch” or “Cutter” (if any exist), or “37/40”. Six characters
should be enough if we all use typical nomenclature like Mk1, LF, +, R, XL, or
TM. Condensing the entry fields should put the data on one line for entry, and
might even allow for an additional data field for Keel Type (suggest a drop
down list using STD, CB, Deep, Modified as the options).

Not trying to complicate your life, but it might make data entry easier and
more standardized.

Stus-List Owners database

2014-03-18 Thread Stu
The Florida sunshine slowed down my progress on the database. Once we get back
to the frozen north, I hope to get back to it.

The form that is posted is still in the design stages – the size of the boxes
will be enlarged/decreased to accommodate the information being placed in it.

I am going to change the Photo Gallery so that it opens up in a new window and
from there you will be able to copy and paste a link to your album into the
external photo link on the database. It will be extremely difficult to link
the Photo Gallery to the database – two different software packages and
probably different usernames and passwords, etc.

I appreciate all the suggestions and comments and will certainly try to
incorporate them.

I think someone else mentioned the Lat Long is handy for a Google map type

then leave blank, put in municipal dock coordinate or a nearby dumpster, etc.
so as to comply with intent of info request

If you have info that does fit the form, as in three spinnys, then input

Hi Rich,

I think the reason for the Lat Long in the Where to Find Boat section is
because Stu wants to have a world map showing the location of all CC's.
He had that before. Using Lat Long makes it much easier. You could
choose to just use the Lat long of the Yacht Club Street Entrance Gate or
some other nearby spot if you are concerned with security.

The map is kind of cool if you are planning a trip and want to see who is
where. It makes it easier to recognise if you will be near someone on the
list while you are travelling to arrange to meet for a beer or whatever.

Stu, looks good however I “technically” would have a problem filling out the
owner part. My wife actually owns the boat and I’m the “mate.” And we have
different last names. She’s pretty smart though. I do all the maintenance and
upgrades and she just gets to step onboard and has someone run the boat. Just

Anyway, I’m just fooling’ around here. Don’t change it.

Looks good. Is City intended to be the city of residence of the owner?
Will there be a Homeport (City State) field in the boat section? These
two locations are quite often different.

Primary use(s) fields; racing, cruising, daysail (multiselect).

Years owned or purchase date?

  Looks OK. Couple of comments:

1: Put Yacht Club affiliation under Owner
  2. Put Boat Location under Owner. That could be merely the name of the marina
or yacht club. I can’t see much use for the hyper detailed location information
as that often changes depending on the club or marina rules. Possible security
issues too??
  3. Could be a section called “boat identification” which would include oat
Name, state or province and license number, or Port of Registry,
  4. Scrap the detailed “Where to find the Boat” section.
  5. “Personnal” has one “n”

Re: Stus-List Owners database

2014-03-09 Thread Russ Melody

Hi Gary,

I think someone else mentioned the Lat Long is
handy for a Google map type application. I
suggest if you don't wish a pin on your boat's
exact location then leave blank, put in municipal
dock coordinate or a nearby dumpster, etc. so as
to comply with intent of info request.

If you have info that does fit the form, as in
three spinnys, then input primary info and
supplement additional info in Upgrades box.
Like using Upgrades as a Comments section.

Just trying to help...

Here are some of the fields I am thinking of including:

Boat length – ie: 27 foot, 39 foot, etc.

Model or MK – ie: R, +, XL, MK1, MK2, etc.

Year

Boat Name

Re: Stus-List Owners Database

2014-03-07 Thread Stu
Thanx for all the suggestions – I guess I’ve got my work cut out for me over
the next few days.

I’m not in favour of using phone numbers (even if disguised) – there are too
many hackers out there trying to steal you identity and cell phones are very
vulnerable. Email addresses are not as bad.

Andrew – will be back home end of March – still trying to soak up Florida
sunshine before the trek back to the frozen north.

Stu,

I have Access on my laptop. If I can help by setting up an Access
Database, please let me know. I owe so much to the list.

Here are some of the fields I am thinking of including:
Boat length - ie: 27 foot, 39 foot, etc.
 Model or MK - ie: R, +, XL, MK1, MK2, etc.
 Year
Engine - ie: Atomic 4, etc.
 Boat Name
 Previous Name(s)
 Owner(s)
 Home Port (city, town, etc)
 Province/State/Country
 Yacht Club
Contact Email (will not be displayed, distributed or sold)
Long/Lat (if we get the maps working)

 Any other suggestions?

Stus-List owners database

2014-03-07 Thread Jimmy Kelly
one consideration could be marketing length ex. cnc30 ..along with
overall length...many cnc models like 27s varied from 26.8ft to27 .9ft i
believe in case of cnc 38s were less than 38ft..redline 41was 41ft .7 on
deck only fit in 43 ft slip because of reverse transom that does not
include bowpulpit overhang...newport 41s are 40ft.just a thought...

Hi Stu,

I hope for your success in this.

Additional fields suggestions:
Hull colour (not, color :)
Trim colour (as above :)
Upgrades (incl year?)
Primary use (Race, cruise,combo)
Place of build (probably not owner provided, inserted from other table?)

Cheers, Russ
