Most all of our races in the mid-Chesapeake area are PHRF TOD.

All -

For your local races, how many use PHRF vs ORC or other? TOT vs TOD?

I'm in a J30 one design fleet in Annapolis, but there are also PHRF classes
in Annapolis and West River. Not sure of the details.

The Cruiser class has been switching to ORC for weekend races. While I
suspect most C&Cs are in the database, a Hylas 44 was not.

Re: Stus-List Wednesday Night racing - now scoring systems

2016-07-15 Thread Eric Baumes via CnC-List
On the Hudson River, we use ToT at the club level and ToD for interclub
regattas.

The rationale for ToT at the club level is roughly:

1. The RC doesn't need to know the exact length of the course. While we
race around fixed marks, the RC boat will move to give us the best
approximate W/L course. This eliminates need to know the exact length of
the course.
2. While we have 20+ boats split over 2 fleets (spin/non spin) the PHRF
range is 57 - 261. ToT is said to give the slower boats a better chance.

Not sure why we still use ToD at the interclub level.

We use the default A/B values.

Advantages for PHRF vs other systems is that it is cheap and easy to
administer. While overall numbers for PHRF racing may be down, there is yet
to really be another handicapping system that has taken hold and can work
easily with local admin. A couple years ago there was a big push for IRC by
making it cheaper and easier to apply for an un-endorsed cert, but IRC
seems all but dead. I got an email from US Sailing the other day pushing
ORC pushing ORC club. But it is fighting the installed base of local YRAs
in the US that issue thousands of PHRF certificates each year.

A PHRF application is really pretty easy to fill out for even a novice
sailor vs the measurement requirements for other systems. Also the money
and administration for an ORC certificate is going to US Sailing vs. your
local YRA who more directly support racing in your area. Full disclosure I
am a member of our local YRA board.

have some Dillon people crewing in our Wednesday night races at Chatfield (

Hi Edd,

Yes, we're lake sailors here in Colorado :) Have a look at my photo album at
https://drive.google.com/open?id=0B-NqAxQ6JxFTY0VBM2hlT0hveDQ and you can see
the lake I sail on. But we get to the Caribbean, Gulf, and Pacific whenever we
can :)

There's actually quite a healthy sailing scene here, with racing yacht clubs at
Chatfield, Cherry Creek, and Dillon Reservoirs, and at Carter Lake. The racing
at Dillon in particular is very competitive (and the mountain winds pretty
violent). The scene may be vibrant here precisely because there are so few
suitable bodies of water for keelboats, serving a pretty large urban corridor
and population base.

All that said, I just finished an analysis of participation in my club's
keelboat series by year since 2012. We had 37 boats in 2012, and have
alternated between 31 and 25 ever since. So yeah, a 33% decline in five years.
Causes include people getting old, people moving, people too busy with other
things, and probably people not wanting to spend the money any more. We've had
good luck finding people to crew by starting a meetup group. Of course we get a
variety of experience levels, but it's been a good way to find new people
interested in sailing around here.

Cheers,

In my area, you can see the decline on sites like yachtscoring.com . But
there’s been a lot I can see with my own eyes, along with the chatter around
the clubs/boards. I think they can yelled Block Island Race Week this year
because of too few entries.

It’s a shame, but I get it. Times are tough and racing (moreso than just

with their spouses and kids — getting crew to consistently participate is a
challenge too.

Yes. We switched to PHRF TOT from our former ASPN (also TOT) system in 2009.
Atlantic Speed Potential Number was in fact our Time Correction factor in
percent. It was simpler for the racers than PHRF but made a lot more work
rating existing boats that came from other areas and already had an established
PHRF number.

As some have said PHRF is not always fair. But short of measuring every single
boat (ex ORR) and having different numbers for each wind and sea state there is
not really anything that is any better. One Design is fairer except I doubt
everyone want the same thing from a boat so we all but something different.

Yeah, Dillon is a hot scene. Last year 36 one-design boats and 22 PHRF boats:

But it's a violent place to sail. Two years ago at the Buccaneer 18 national

Re: Stus-List Wednesday Night racing

2016-07-14 Thread RANDY via CnC-List
Thanks Michael.

There's probably some truth to the complaint that PHRF handicaps are not fair
(in my RSA I only get +6 for a two-blade fixed prop, and I think a folding prop
would make me more that six seconds per nautical mile faster). But I don't
think anyone has quit my club over an unfair PHRF rating :)

Cheers,
Randy

Re: Stus-List Wednesday Night racing

2016-07-14 Thread RANDY via CnC-List

Cheers,
Randy

Randy,

By “everywhere”, I meant everywhere on Western LI Sound. I don’t know what
things are like in Colorado. Heck, I didn’t even know you could sail in
Colorado. Ski, yes. Sail? Wow. Looks pretty land-locked on my map.

In my area, you can see the decline on sites like yachtscoring.com . But
there’s been a lot I can see with my own eyes, along with the chatter around
the clubs/boards. I think they can yelled Block Island Race Week this year
because of too few entries.

It’s a shame, but I get it. Times are tough and racing (moreso than just
cruising) gets expensive. People are also working more and spending more time
with their spouses and kids — getting crew to consistently participate is a
challenge too.

All the best,

Edd

There is a surprising amount of sailboat racing in Colorado. The Dillon
Yacht Club is active during the summer with lots of events.
http://www.dillonyachtclub.com/
It's the highest elevation yacht club in the US. It's always closed for
the season when I'm out that way skiing but there are lots of boats on the
hard at the club.

Some years back, I was contracted to go get a Wavelength 24 and bring it
back to Louisiana. It had been raced extensively on Dillon Lake and Carter
Reservoir outside Boulder.

One of the four clubs on City Island just closed its doors for good. Sad to see
the decline.

All the best,

I have been racing Frolic II, 36' cb, on Wednesday nights for 10 years. We race
using PHRF and I am the big boat in the fleet with a rating of 127, everyone
gets time. It has been a lot of fun over the years and the crew and I look
forward to it. Frolic is for sale as I am looking to downsize and continue
racing, one of the boats that has caught my interest is a Harbor 25 - does
anyone have any inside info on this boat?

Re: Stus-List Wednesday Night racing

2016-07-11 Thread Sam Wheeler via CnC-List
I raced in a Wednesday fleet a few years ago but at this point Wednesday
has become my designated non-sailing day... My race schedule is Tuesday
and Thursday nights in Vanguard 15 dinghies (Tuesdays are team
racing), Friday nights on an Islander 36 in a PHRF spinnaker fleet, and
occasional weekends on a J/105, a Santa Cruz 50, and anyone else who will
take me. The V-15 is mine, the rest are OPBs.

I don't have any plans to seriously race my 35 since I live aboard and it's
not really set up to go fast, but I'm hoping at some point down the line to
enter it in something fun and casual with low expectations - probably once
I get it rigged to fly a spinnaker.

Started one night a week, either Tuesday in white sail or Wednesday

the boat in 2009. A couple of years ago the club offered a flying sail
start on Tuesdays which I race in. So spinnaker twice a week.

a
~1 knot favorable current. The wind was only 1-4 knots. Our speed
through
the water was as low as 1.5 knots. Had the current been the other way, we

Re: Stus-List Wednesday Night racing

2016-07-11 Thread David via CnC-List
We raced round-the-bouys and Wednesday night for years on Corsair with my
teenage son and an additional crew of 6...(We often saw Zoomer's stern)

Once my son started doing his own thing, I realized I was spending a lot of
money and time, abusing my boat and was generally not having a good time
anymore on hyperactive 1 mile W/L courses. So I closed the Adult Day Camp.

So now its short-handed long distance racing with my son(s) when he/they can
make it.

Re: Stus-List Wednesday Night racing

2016-07-11 Thread Edd Schillay via CnC-List
I’ve been Wednesday-Night racing for well over 20 years on City Island, in the
EBYRA series, which I was Commodore of for 13 years.

I started on the Enterprise-A (1978 C&C 34), then on the Enterprise-B (1990 C&C
37+). For the first year this year, I’m experiencing the joys and less hassles
of OPBs — I’m crewing on a Catalina 34TM. After week one, they made me
tactician and crew boss. I guess I know my stuff. Either that, or I have
everyone fooled.

I always enjoyed running my own boat wth my own crew, but I must say I’m very
surprised at how much I’m enjoying the crew position on someone else’s boat —
especially when I see lines fray, the whisker pole bend, and shackles that need
replacing. I can almost hear my American Express card sigh relief.

All the best,

Edd

I've been racing Wednesday nights at New Bedford YC since 2001. First on
Bill Dingwell's C&C40 DK named "Zoomer" doing foredeck. Raced my 25 Mk1 on
occasion, but had more fun and learned more on OPB (other peoples' boats).

The C&C 40 was retired and sold (as was my 25) so I moved to a Wednesday
night one design fleet, thus no longer racing on a C&C. However, I'm still
racing on a boat with a guy named Rob Ball (an Etchells), so plenty of C&C
topics are discussed while sailing..

There are no plans to remove the dodger, bimini, and dinghy davits from the
Landfall to go buoy racing at this time...

Like Bill, we've been racing for many years, we race on the Ohio River, so we
get short courses and strange layouts, the real fun is when a fully loaded 1000
ft barge and towboat come through the middle of the fleet in mid-start!
