Re: Stus-List java updates

2014-05-18 Thread Joe Della Barba via CnC-List
My son's laptop dual boots to Windows 7 and Linux Mint. The various Linux
installers will see Windows already there and ask if you want to do a
dual-boot install. Adobe has Linux versions of their software and Mint comes
with LibreOffice. LibreOffice can be set to save in Microsoft Office formats
if desired> my son's school uses the latest Microsoft Office that uses .DOCX
format and our old Office didn't deal with it very well, so I loaded up the
LibreOffice version for Windows for free that works just fine for the
Windows machine :)

See
http://www.forbes.com/sites/robertbowman/2014/05/12/windows-xp-is-extinct-so
-why-are-so-many-companies-still-on-it/ for XP security issues.

As for Ubuntu vs. Mint, under the hood they are pretty much the same. I like
Mint because if I give to someone used to Windows the menus are close enough
that they don't need much, if any, help with it. Only tricky thing I have
found in the various Linux platforms is setting up printers isn't always
obvious.

If I install any Linux based OS is that equivalent to reformatting the hard
drive. I mean will I lose my MS Office applications and adobe etc if I do
that. If I make a separate partition for the Linux OS will I be able to
access applications in the Windows XP partition with it? I have lots of
hard drive space available. What is the difference between Linux mint
versions and Ubuntu?

I do important things like banking on my ipad or iphone using iOS7 but I do
most email and surfing on my XP machine. I like a full size QWERTY keypad
for typing and I like my large monitor and wired mouse control.

Is anyone aware of any reports of people getting hacked because they are
still using Windows XP? I know quite a few internet users who are still
running on Windows XP and personally I have not heard of any issues yet. I
update my anti virus software regularly and that software tells me that I am
protected and I do full systems scans every day, does that help at all?

Marek, do you know if I will affect anything by uninstalling all java
programs using add/remove from control panel?

As an IT pro I would strongly suggest not having an XP machine exposed to
the internet.

If you don't want to spend $ for Microsoft I have good luck with this OS. It
is free and much easier to use than Windows 8 :)

I am still running windows xp sp3 and I recall reading somewhere to avoid
Java updates because that might be a source of attack on machines using xp
now that Microsoft has stopped supporting that operating system. I like
windows xp and I am familiar with using it after so many years: I don't want
to change yet but when my computer bites the dust. Right now it is more than
adequate for my needs, fast and stable. I continue to receive notices about
Java updates but so far I have cancelled all without downloading. Can
anyone here advise on that.I am not sure why I need Java but I have

Great machine and 1800s are still in use.
Not all of them were quite so reliable in 65 when I started on tab machines and
computers.
Now to bring things back to at least marine related.
IBM had one of the less reliable in a unit record machine 557 that if you
filled with concrete and threw it overboard it would only sink intermittently.

Re: Stus-List java updates

2014-05-16 Thread Josh Muckley via CnC-List
Everything Joe said about Mint is basically the same for Ubuntu. Both can
be downloaded for free and run from a CD so I suggest trying both. Ubuntu
tries to "advertise" that they have better long term support and regular
periodic updates, but who knows. As easy as they both are it probably
doesn't matter. With a linux application called "wine" you can run some
windows applications but planning on a dual boot is your best bet. I
regulary switch between XP and Ubuntu defaulting to Ubuntu for speed and
security. There are fewer and fewer reasons for me to use XP but
occasionally I just need that one legacy application.

Switching to Linux is *EASIER* than switching to Windows 8.
I put Mint on a laptop for my wife, who is NOT an IT person, and it took her
about 5 seconds to learn. Mint uses a GUI that is as close to Windows 7 as can
be and far easier to use than 8.
I had to get rid of Windows 8 on a new laptop for my son because of driver
issues. It now dual boots to 7 and Mint. Mint was very easy to load, but 7 took
a couple days to hunt down all the drivers :(
For an added bonus, Mint can run from the boot media, so you can try it before

Home built computers using RCA chips. Memory cost around $50 for 1 K as I
mistily recall and got stuffed into breadboards from the electronics
wholesaler. It was a big day when characters appeared in the screen and made a
little sense.

most of the modern browsers disable java by default.
I would update it and disable it (or uninstall). If you keep the old version,
you are more vulnerable.

make sure that you don’t allow installing any of the additional crapware (e.g.
additional toolbars).

Re: Stus-List java updates

2014-05-15 Thread Aaron Rouhi via CnC-List

Java entirely. If you don't have any applications that runs on Java, go ahead
and do that...
