Re: [cobirds] New message to post
Hi Margaret, You might look for solar films instead of pre-made filters. I did this for the 2017 eclipse when I couldn't find an appropriately sized filter and ended up crafting my own filter cover. I'm not sure what brand I used at the time, but these can be found at photo stores such as B Photo. https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1348133-REG/alpine_astronomical_asolv_e_astrosolar_safety_film_5_0.html Kevin On Sat, Mar 16, 2024 at 8:23 AM Margaret Smith wrote: > Thanks, Diana. Re: [cobirds] Flock of yellow-headed blackbirds drop mysteriously from sky in Mexico – video
It might be a part of a murmuration that got too close to the ground (possibly avoiding predator as already noted). Except for the blue sky background, I would wonder about a possible microburst or some other sudden downdraft, but without meteorological data from the scene, the predator avoidance seems most likely. Agree that it appears that most birds were able to move after grounding. As fast as they came down, a few casualties might be expected… Sent from my iPad > On Feb 15, 2022, at 10:52 AM, 'Deborah Carstensen' via Colorado Birds > wrote: > > > Extraordinary video of yellow headed blackbird‘s crashing from the sky. Re: [cobirds] Bird Finder
Hey - that's cool! The best feature IMO is that you can click on a species and then see where the best spots are to find them by month. For example, if you're looking for Dusky Grouse in May within 50 miles of Colorado Springs: https://www.michaelfogleman.com/birds/where/4576?lat=38.833882=-104.821363_mi=50=5 Or if you want to find a Chukar on the western slope in June: https://www.michaelfogleman.com/birds/where/1153?lat=39.063871=-108.550649_mi=50=6 It does appear that it is limited to showing eBird hotspots. Clicking on one will take you to the eBird hotspot. The feature is similar to the eBird species maps, but it does give you a frequency/confidence that eBird does not. However, it does lack showing all non-hotspot locations that you'd find on eBird. Thanks for sharing. [cobirds] JeffCo Hotspots Today
While it seemed a majority of those actively birding today were previously reported birds, I enjoyed the opportunity to get out to some spots in hopes of coming across an eastern vagrant of my own. I started the day down at *Chatfield *with a quick walk along the swim beach in hopes of finding some late shorebirds. The beach was empty but I came across a calling *NORTHERN WATERTHRUSH *as the sun was peaking over the horizon. Stopped by the *Audubon Center *for a walk along the river after that, but it was very quiet. There were a couple calling Least Flycatchers, a few calling Chats and very few warblers. After that I made a quick stop at *Robert A. Easton* where there is still a decent sized flock of warblers working the trees around the tennis courts. The flock consisted of 95% yellow-rumped with a few Orange-crowned. I followed that up with a stop at *Harriman Lake *where I had a male *BLACK-AND-WHITE WARBLER. *The yellow-rumps at this location seem to be turning over into Orange-crowned and Yellows. I also had two male and one female Common Yellowthroat working the ditch. A little later in the day I did a short hike along *Bear Creek *and came across a male *BLACKPOLL WARBLER *feeding among a group of Yellow-rumps. As is typical this time of year, there are quite a few eastern warblers showing up scattered around the county. Although the warbler flocks are hanging out in the same locations, the birds are definitely changing over, so if you have a warbler flock in your local patch it's worth checking in on it over the next few weeks to see what might join the birds for a day or two! [cobirds] Wheat Ridge Greenbelt - JeffCo (Rose-breasted Grosbeak RFI Response)
I've been walking Wheat Ridge as often as possible over the last couple months. Sometimes I shoot out there at first light and bird up until I have to get over to my office and other days I'll go for a lunch hour walk. I typically start over at West Lake and work my way in a loop over to the Prospect Lake bridge then circle back. I'll also sometimes venture over to the west side of 70, but that area has seemed to be less birdy with all of the construction going on. I birded for the *Rose-breasted Grosbeaks* multiple times after they were first reported without any luck, then finally came across a female yesterday. I was walking the trail back into the wooded area east of the fence across the creek from Prospect Lake. After about 100 yards the fence turns back west away from the trail and about 100 feet after that I walked into a big group of warblers. The grosbeak wasn't moving much and wasn't calling, but I ended up catching it in my binoculars at one point when chasing down a warbler. It was up high in a tree on the west side of the trail picking food off of the leaves. It was back behind some leaves so I tried some quick pishing that it didn't care at all for. After growing a little impatient I tried some playback for both grosbeak species and didn't get a response to that either. After sitting there another 5 minutes and losing the bird behind leaves multiple times it finally popped out onto an open branch so I could confirm that it was indeed a rose-breasted. *Shorebirds* haven't been as easy to come by this year, but if I'm seeing anything unusual it's typically in the morning. By the lunch hour I'm guessing the mix of dogs and people have scared off anything that may have wanted to stick around, unless it's raining of course! The mud flat on the south side of West Lake looks so good for Plovers, but it's really rare for me to see anything other than *Killdeer* and *Spotted Sandpiper*s. The colder temperatures that we've had most of the month so far were keeping a lot of the *Warblers* along the creek, mostly from the Youngfield parking lot east to the first bridge, then again along the length of the Prospect Lake parking lot. The warmer weather over the last couple days has seemed to allow the birds to move around a little more. A pair of *Common Yellowthroats* have been hanging out around the Bass Lake boardwalk. *Yellow Warbler*s are calling throughout the area. *Orange-crowned*s are piling up in the wooded area east of the fence across the creek from Prospect Lake. I had my lowest number of *Yellow-rumped*s of the year this morning, so it seems they're moving on, which makes things a lot less birdy, but should provide more opportunity to "bird every bird" in hopes of finding those less common migrants. I recently had a pair of *Swainson's Thrushes* along the small creek south of Clear Creek about halfway between Bass Lake and Prospect Lake. I had a *Gray Flycatcher* catching bugs one morning on the west side of Prospect Lake. A pair of *Cinnamon Teal* are still hanging out - most recently in the river. I had a male *Wood Duck* in West Lake this morning. I've come across at least 4 *Bullock's Oriole's *nests, 3 *Flicker *nests, 2 *Tree Swallow *nests, 2 *Starling *nests, and a *Cooper's Hawk* nest. It also appears that there are at least 2 pairs of *Black-crowned Night-heron*'s, 2 pairs of *Great Blue Herons* and multiple pairs of *Canada Geese* nesting on the island of Tabor Lake *Flycatchers* have been really slow this year, or I'm just not walking at the right times of the day. I've only had 2 empids and the Gray Flycatcher mentioned above. The area doesn't prove to be one of the best for *Sparrows *but I've found *Lincoln's* in a few spots this year. *Chipping* have been all over in large flocks. I had some *Lark *and *Vesper* earlier in the season west of 70 on both sides of the pond. For the most part the morning birding is by far superior to the early afternoon birding, although I'm noticing that flycatchers and warblers are much less active in the morning. I typically have to leave by around 7 to get to work, so by 8 things are probably picking up a little better. Weather has been playing a huge part in the birds as well, as I'm sure it is everywhere else. The only fall-out type conditions I've seen were with Pipits with the snow a couple weeks ago, but cold snaps and rain almost always produce something new and different. The species of birds are definitely changing as the month goes on, but these nice warm days aren't nearly as productive! Good luck! Feel free to check in anytime. [cobirds] 2 Palm Warblers - Denver West, Golden
I took a lunch break walk through Denver West (east of 70, north of Colfax). I had two PALM WARBLERS moving around just north of Lena Gulch between Building 5 and the Building 6&7 parking lot. Also in the flock were a brown creeper, a few bushtits, and a handful of black-capped chickadees. Interestingly, neither bird appeared to be the bird recently photographed from the office park. At least one bird was still very near breeding plumage, still maintaining a rufous cap, and the other may have been as well although I after ID'ing the first I spent most of my time on the second as it took longer to get a clear view through the branches. Both birds were tail bobbing and feeding, as well as following each other around and interacting at times. The office park is also known for late fall Pine Warblers and Yellow-bellied Sapsuckers, but although they have been my target all fall, I have yet to find one. [cobirds] Re: Jaegers Chatfield SP
I observed all 3 birds this afternoon from 1:45-2:15 from the north boat launch. Originally, the birds appeared to be up against the dam adjacent from the Marina Sand Spit but as boaters moved around the lake they moved further toward the north where identifiable marks could be seen with binoculars from the point at the boat launch. Although identifiable marks could be seen that allowed me to compare the larger, dark-morphed bird to the photos obtained by Mark, I'd love if someone could help point out what features of the bird that can be seen from a distance, or even in the photos, point toward Parasitic and not Pomarine. I've had some experience with both, but the behavior I observed today reminded me more of what I've seen from Pomarine. I'm sure someone with more experience has a reason for the ID of Parasitic - can you please share with the group? Is it the dark cinnamon undertail noted by Gregg? Thanks, Kevin DeBoer Lakewood, CO On Tuesday, September 11, 2018 at 2:13:58 PM UTC-6, Gregg Goodrich wrote: > > Mark > > Thanks for all the excellent photos. Good job!! [cobirds] Re: Info for White-tailed Ptarmigan
I agree with Sheridan. Best bet for access with young kids would be to hope they're along the road, or viewable, up on Loveland Pass. The wind up there can be pretty strong, so they'll most likely be hunkered down. I haven't been up there this season, but scan any vegetation that hasn't been completely covered by the recent snowfalls. A scope can be beneficial in doing so if you have one. It's a hit or miss bird, but hopefully the young kids can keep an eye out on the way up the pass and may come up with a roadside bird! Re: [cobirds] Info for White-tailed Ptarmigan
Kirk - I attempted to find the WTPT about 2 weeks ago on Guanella Pass. The road to the closure/parking lot was dry and easy driving. The road is closed about 1.75 miles from the pass, but the hike up was not bad. If it has snowed a bunch since then, it could be difficult. I wore microspikes with hiking boots. Snowshoes would have been useful, but they weren't necessary. You can check out 14ers.com for an update on the trailhead status, as it may have been updated more recently. I found no signs of the birds around the pass nor on the first mile of the trail up Bierstadt. I later read that they stay under the snow during the winter. But, there are sightings on eBird not that long ago. I'd be curious if someone could confirm that looking for them at this point is futile. Anyone? [cobirds] Rosy Finches on Pikes Peak (Teller County)
I had a neat surprise while hiking with my dogs this morning. We hiked from Green Mountain Falls up to South Catamount Reservoir. Shortly after I turned around and headed back, I noticed about 10 birds flying in/out of the rocks below the dam on the north side of South Catamount Res. I assumed Rosy Finches, so I walked back up the trail and onto the dam to get a better look. The birds were very hard to see below the damn among the rocks. I was only able to positively id 2 Brown-capped and one Black before the flock got spooked and started taking off. I would never have guessed how many birds were among the rocks - they kept coming and coming and coming. Almost magical. I recorded 400, but that's a conservative count. Next time I go, I'll bring my scope and stay below the damn. The birds will be easier to see and less likely to get spooked. I was hoping this was going to be El Paso County, but it's just inside Teller. [cobirds] Teller country Rosy Finches follow-up
Today, I headed back to the same spot I found the Rosy Finches on Wednesday - this time with my camera. I was hoping for an easy find, given that I found them on what appeared to be a feeding station in someone's yard that they seemed to like. No such luck. I drove all of CR 861 and 5 miles, out and back of CR 86 and could not relocate them. I also drove some of the mining roads and some of Gold Camp Road but only came home with a few Raven sightings. I was up there a couple hours earlier today, FWIW. NB: I sent my email on Wednesday afternoon shortly after spotting the finches, but it apparently did not get approved until yesterday. [cobirds] Rosy Finches, Teller County, Victor
I came across a nice flock of about 100-120 Rosy Finches south of Victor this afternoon. There were at least 30 Black's that were easily distinguished from the others. I could id about 10 Brown-capped and 10 Gray-crowned, and the others were moving about too much to see them clearly enough to get an id. I found them on CR 861, south of Victor. Someone appeared to have seed set out on top of a 55-gallon drum in their yard, and the birds kept flocking to that along with a few chickadees when the finches would disperse. Before checking out Victor, I took my dogs for a hike up to Pancake Rocks and came across what I thought to be an unusual density of American Three-toed Woodpeckers. I recorded 6, but that was a conservative count. They were all in the section of trail right after the Pancake Rocks trail diverges from Horsethief Falls trail - maybe the first 2/3 mile of that section. This is a cold, north facing slope that doesn't get sun during the winter. [cobirds] Re: Belmar 3 warblers YES
I arrived at Bel Mar around 7 this morning hoping to pick up these birds as early as possible. Things started slow with a chickadee and some house finches. I walked some laps around the buildings and continued to go back and forth between the lake and the 3 suet feeders that are hanging around Buildings 620 and 640. Finally around 8:05 one Yellow-rumped Warbler flew in to the NW corner of the lake from the SE. Another showed up about 10 minutes later. Then finally at about 8:20, both the Prairie Warbler and the Yellow-throated Warbler showed up within a minute of each other. All Warblers flew into this area from the SE, over the island. I had concentrated my efforts the last two evenings on the areas around the west side of the apartment complexes, but if anyone is hoping to get these birds in the evening, I would suggest exploring some areas to the SE. The Say's Phoebe was also observed this morning perching and moving around on the building directly north of the lake. [cobirds] Re: basemar trap
I'm here right now. About to give up. I've been here for an hour and a half and haven't seen either bird. I walked both up and down the creek. The habitat on the other side of Broadway seems very favorable with berry and juniper trees. Lots of Robins, Waxwings, Starlings and a couple Solitaires in a constant feast. I followed the steam through the neighborhood back to a cemetery. There's not much visibility or access until the cemetery but the habitat looks good along the whole length. Lots of places for the Thrush to hang out and eat if it wants, but no luck for me. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "Colorado Birds" group. [cobirds] Black-throated Blue Warbler /Varied Thrush Boulder
Spent a couple hours this morning trying to put together a good bird list for goodwill. The BLACK-THROATED BLUE WARBLER was around all morning. I first saw it before 7 east of the east bridge and it slowly moved west and was near the west bridge by 830. The VARIED THRUSH was not refound during my time there. I searched the neighborhood west of Broadway briefly but got overwhelmed by the amount of habitat on a work day. There were a number of Robins and Solitaires moving around in that area in the earlier part of the morning so I was hopeful but was never able to pull it out from the crowd. For anyone else heading that direction today, I'd recommend concentrating efforts on that neighborhood if not found in previously reported area. Good luck! [cobirds] Re: Black Duck, Weld
Thanks for this great find! Unfortunately the ducks' location wasn't as cooperative today. I stopped by both the north and south ends of Windsor Lake, in the morning as well as in the late afternoon. It would appear that there were probably still quite a few Mallards (over 1000?) present, but they were all carefully located *exactly* in the middle of the lake (a partial ice covering apparently makes this a good location?). So, there was little chance an American Black Duck would be viewable for identification purposes by scope from either end of the reservoir. Where's an eagle when you need one? I hope the ducks move one way or the other again and someone else has better luck. [cobirds] Re: Clark's nutcracker, 5700' in Larimer County (plus other migrants)
Hiking in Horsetooth Mountain Park (Larimer County) in the heat of the day today (90Fs), I was surprised to see a Clark's Nutcracker sitting in a dead snag at just under 6000' in elevation. In a few decades of hiking Horsetooth Rock this is the first time I've ever seen one here (might be the one that Arvind had heard last week?). Due to the heat, overall birding was fairly quiet, with some of the regulars plus one Townsend's Warbler. [cobirds] Re: Nashville warbler still there on the Poudre River bike trail
The Nashville Warbler in Fort Collins (along the bike trail south of Timberline) continued today (Wednesday 5/8) at the same location near the picnic table, and was seen by several birders through at least noon. A Solitary Sandpiper was also seen in the Poudre, and a Common Poorwill was found in the riparian area south of the picnic table. No sign of the Palm Warbler however, or of any Broad-winged Hawks. Thanks to Libby for mentioning this again, and to those on the trail that helped find the birds! [cobirds] Larimer County: Bullock's Oriole
This morning I had my FOS Bullock's Oriole (male) in a tree top at the North Shields Pond Natural Area in Fort Collins. Other migrants of interest were a male Common Yellowthroat, a few Brown-headed Cowbirds, Orange-crowned Warbler, Say's Phoebe, and plenty of Yellow-rumped Warblers (both Myrtle and Audubon's). [cobirds] Bohemian Waxings on west side of Fort Collins
At 10 a.m. this morning there were about 100 Bohemian Waxwings (with another 10 or so Cedar Waxwings mixed in) singing loudly in the trees of the strip mall parking lot immediately south and west of the intersection of Drake and Shields in Fort Collins. Nice surprise driving through town! Regards, Kevin Keirn Fort Collins, CO -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups Colorado Birds group. [cobirds] Red-necked Grebes continue at Firestone Gravel Pits
Just a quick note that the two Red-necked Grebes were still present this morning at the Firestone Gravel Pits, along with the previously reported male Greater Scaup and one male Red-breasted Merganser. [cobirds] Scarlet Tanager still present in Gregory Canyon
This afternoon Brent Thordarson and I refound the male Scarlet Tanager still present at its usual location in Gregory Canyon in Boulder County. Eariler in the morning we also visited Lower Latham (WCR48) in Weld County and were fortunate to find one American Bittern, a Virginia Rail, and a Sora. A visit to Crow Valley, however, was fairly quiet. [cobirds] Re: Worm-eating Warbler/Larimer
This afternoon my wife (Gail) and I revisited Lee Martinez around 2pm. We were unable to refind the Worm Eating Warbler. However, we did refind the male Rose-Breasted Grosbeak now in the location described above, along with a female Rose-Breasted Grosbeak as well. Other birds seen were Northern Waterthrush (1) and Broad-winged Hawk (1). [cobirds] Re: Trumpeter Swans, Lower Church Lake, Broomfield County
As of 10am on the 10th, there are still 5 Trumpeters on the lake. They were swimming around a bit on the NW side of the lake. On Feb 9, 1:02 pm, daveabird...@gmail.com daveabird...@gmail.com wrote: The 5 Trumpeter Swans remain at Lower Church Lake, (Hwy 36 and Church Ranch Blvd.) as of 11:50am. The wind had them close to the road, seaking shelter on the west side of the lake. They were in a position offering nice views - if you can remain standing!
