[cobirds] Davis property list data
I've been keeping casual track for 24 years, although I have gotten new birds when leading field trips up to my deck! (thank you) I've seen 135 species (see habitat below), which includes a single ring-necked pheasant that I saw up here about 30 years ago, when my in-laws lived here. Favorite birds are mostly front range/decidous kinda birds, that are weird up here in Ponderosa Pine habitat. Snow Goose, the pheasant, Black Swift, Belted Kingfisher, Red- headed Woodpecker and Brown Thrasher the same day, Pinyon Jay (which many of you have seen here), Juniper Titmouse, and Rose-breasted Groseak Most memorable was probably the Canyon Wren that came in through the cat door, and woke us up harvesting dead flies in the inside window sills in our bedroom. I'm at 6,000 ft., in dry Ponderosa Pine habitat, with no water nearby so my list is very weak on water birds and warblers. [cobirds] Bird identification
Hi all! A friend of mine sent me this picture and I can't figure out what species I'm looking at. [cobirds] Bird Names
In the 1983 James Lane Birder's Guide to the Rio Grande Valley, he posits that the name changing is some really just some sort of game with points, such as 1 pt for just adding Northern, or changing American to Common etc. up to 5 points for a split (1 previous bird into 2 separate specie) 7 points for a confusing name that sounds like another (Yellow-throats anyone?) AND my favorite 10 points for a name longer than the bird itself, NORTHERN BEARDLESS TYRANNULET! Weirdly this year... we've had 2-3 Clark's Nutcrackers for 2-3 months now. Previous records in 20 years here have been 3 individuals, all for 1 day in various Septembers. For about 3.5 weeks, I've had 2-4 Clark's Nutcrackers hanging around (I feed peanuts). I have, in 20 years, seen singles for 1 day here in various Septembers, but never had an extended multi-visit. I have NOT noticed unusual other montaine birds; juncos and red-breasted nuthatches have shown up, but i expect them in Sept. Did have a bear a week ago. Also, Friday, 10/2, while playing golf in Fort Lupton, we had 7 or 8 flocks of sandhill cranes, mostly circling to gain altitude, between 11 and 12:15. Probably 450 total individuals. Unusual mix of corvids at my house this morning. NOT Magpie, Crow, Raven, or Blue Jay. I'm at 6,000 ft, in open ponderosa (definitely NOT pinyon-juniper), 18 miles N of Boulder, and got pinyon jay, scrub jay, Steller's (the usual) jay, and a Clark's Nutcracker this morning. Hint. they all like peanuts. We did hear a blue jay a week ago; we see one 4-6 times a year. Hummingbirds are really thinning out. [cobirds] Red-breasted nuthatches
Just a little interesting piece (hopefully). I have a 14 foot stump of a huge ponderosa next to my deck. While putting an eye-ring in the top for canopy stretching, i thought hey... let's drill a hole. So I drilled out a 1.4 inch hole about 5 inches from the top, then used a coupla drill bits to try to hollow out a nesting cavity. Ended up with a cavity about the size of my (large) fist, but 1/3 full of tendrils and wood tufts. Anyhow, 2 days later, I'm out on the deck and hear a red-breasted nuthatch YANKing nearby. They have been around all winter (more than usual). I and my dog move away from the tree stump, and immediately 2 red-breasted nuthatches come in and start trying to remove sawdust and chips from the hole. They've been at it most of the day. Don't know if they will nest (it is only 5 feet from the deck), but pretty cool!! I don't believe I've ever had them nest in one of my 58 birdboxes, or anywhere on the property. I know Steve Bouricius used to have luck with red-breasted nuthatches nesting about 15 feet up where he would top a tree, and then make a nesting cavity out of a 1 foot chuck of the trunk, which he would then remount on top of the tall stump. [cobirds] interesting Townsend's Solitaire behavior - Larimer County
Coming up the driveway to my house at 6,000 ft in the foothills NW of Lyons, about noon. I stopped because a solitaire was sitting in the middle of the dirt driveway.I pulled up within about 10 feet, and got out to see if it was injured. It flew off, and was apparently fine. Next to where the solitaire was sitting was an apparently dead large spider (Giant Wolf Spider maybe). When I pulled the car around the spider so my wife could see it, it ran off, apparently also fine. I found it quite odd that a solitaire would try to eat an arachnid that large (big enough that I thought Tarantula at first).Or maybe they were just talking! J It's also possible that the spider was playing Dead, as it did not move while I spooked off the solitaire. Other local news, along with Magpies, Steller's and Pinyon Jays, and occasional Scrub Jay, last week I had 2 Blue Jays and 3 Clark's Nutcrackers here. I'm guessing Blue Jay and Clark's Nutcracker aren't often seen Near each other. Raymond Davis - at 6,000 ft. [cobirds] 4 hummer day, south Larimer County
Had nice males of all four of the non-rare hummingbirds today at the feeders. 1 red crossbill hanging around. Plumbeous Vireo calling to the north. Pinyon jays somewhat unreliable, but usually daily. Plus the usual suspects. Have not seen a rattlesnake since the DFO trip up here. [cobirds] Gray-headed junco 6,000 ft. Larimer County 7/26
Seems a bit early for our local (red superman cape) breeding juncos to come down out Of the mountains.1 seen briefly at the water feature. I’ve had them winter until May 30th before, but I think this is my first July sighting. Had a western tanager and female black-headed grosbeak sitting side by side waiting A turn at the suet (house finch was camped out on it). Nice picture that I didn’t get! Seems a poor year for calliope hummers; maybe a plethora of wildflowers means they Aren’t at the (my) feeders? I’ve only seen 1 or two. Red crossbills have been daily here for 3 months; pinyon jays not seen much, so NOT Very reliable currently. Hairy woodpecker family is a real hoot; the youngsters will Do almost anything (land on a vertical ½ in metal pole and stay there for 3 minutes looking Around, etc. Don’t know what they will do for fun when I take the hummingbird feeders Down, as they pop off 3-5 yellow flowers daily. d Davis - at 6,000 ft. [cobirds] Adams County Dunlin and Amer. Pipet
Birders: On our S. Platte duck walk (hard on the knees to do that for miles), we had a Dunlin and a Amer. Pipet at the S. Platte Bridge on McKay Rd (about 9300 N) north of 88th St. The Dunlin last seen flying hard upstream (SW) but was actively flying around sand bars and low water spots for a while. We did NOT see any Barrow's Goldeneye or any Mergansers, but did see a female N. Harrier. Davis - at 6,000 ft. [cobirds] pinyon jays northern pygmy owl - above Lyons
Birders: Have heard a pygmy owl calling in the evenings twice in the last 5 days. We have About 3 inches of snow, which may quiet the bird down as the realization of the Lack of spring sets in. Have not seen it yet. Pinyon jays (12-18) have been around the feeders the last 5 days, but unreliable, of Course.Plus the usual suspects, pygmy and white-breasted nuthatches, both Chickadees, pine siskins and American Goldfinches, Steller's Jays, BB Magpies, Hairy woodpecker, house and Cassin's finches, and usually 4-5 kinds of juncos. Depressed to hear that tree swallows and bluebirds are being seen already, as I haven't cleaned out my 35 bird boxes yet!! If anyone wants to come by, especially for the pinyon jays which are probably 70 miles from good pinyon/juniper habitat and have been local for at least 24 Years, give me a call.Birders always welcome. [cobirds] Lewis's woodpecker in Arapahoe County
While golfing today at Broken Tee, in Englewood, we spotted a Lewis's Woodpecker flying Around and landing in dead cottonwoods. It was about 1/2 miles north of Oxford Rd, along The S. Platte River between Federal and Sante Fe. There is a creek path along there for the General public, which should get you very near where we saw it.To be specific, it was At the 8th hole teebox, on the west side of the river (northish part of the golf course). d Raymond Davis - at 6,000 ft. [cobirds] Common Nighthawk distraction display
Spooked up a nesting common nighthawk (2 chicks) on my north slope, he/she flew downslope 30 yards, And fluttered around with mouth wide open.I backed off immediately, but then snuck back above and peered Down and spotted the two chicks. Some broken egg shells nearby (bad housekeeping?), and the 'nest' was just A random spot in the tree litter, about 3 feet from the base of an open ponderosa pine. 3 species of hummers around currently (Black-chinned is tough here), and red crossbills, as well as the usual Foothills birds (including hairy woodpeckers who think they are hummingbirds). [cobirds] Pinyon Jays on the front range
The small flock of Pinyon Jays that have visited my feeders for 13 years is somewhat reliable these days, Along with Pygmy and White-breasted Nuthatch, Mountain Chickadee, Steller's Jay, Black-billed Magpie, House Finch, American Goldfinch, Hairy Woodpecker, and 4 races of Junco (have not seen White-winged lately). Clark's Nutcracker is casual (I hear one most days), as well as Common Raven. Have not heard pygmy owl (often do in Feb and/or March), and it's 80 days early for Mountain Bluebird! Call first if you want pinyon jay on your Boulder County, Larimer County, 2013, or 2014 list.. [cobirds] Corvidallooza and late hummer
Interesting mix of corvids today - Oct. 4th 11-12 Pinyon Jays 2-3 Clark's Nutcrackers As well as 5-6 Steller's Jay 1 BB Magpie 28-30 American Crow Also 3 Audubon's Warblers 10 House Finch 2 Spotted Towhee 1 hummingbird (probably Broad-Tailed, although I only had a poor look). 1 Lesser Goldfinch 1 Downy Woodpecker Update on Lyons area birding spots impacted by the flooding: -Old South St. Vrain Road, off Hwy 7, looks okay, although the vegetation will be scoured away in the lowest areas. Road is passable, but only for Lyons residents. -Two ponds south of the new McConnell Bridge to the high school (common merganers nest there) are both gone.the St. Vrain river is now running through there, and NOT under the bridge, which looks fine. -Pella Crossing looks torn up. the outhouse by the main parking lot is now tipped into a 15 foot deep washout. -Hwy 36 to Estes and Hwy 7 to Allenspark are completely impassable, we can get to Spring Gulch via Apple Valley Rd, which is pretty good. -Downtown Lyons looks okay (just now getting power back, no water or sewer), but all areas down by the river have been changed quite a bit; I heard 76 houses are gone/destroyed. Both St. Vrain rivers have changed their paths.the City of Lyons is attempting to get permission to reroute them back.not sure how that process works. Raymond Davis - at 6,000 ft. [cobirds] Clark's Nutcrackers at 6,000 ft.
The other morning, I thought I heard a Nutcracker noise, and sure enough, today I had 3 hanging around, Working at Ponderosa Pine cones (until they spotted peanuts being eaten by Steller's Jays, at which time They started guarding the platform feeder.) I've seen 3-4 single individuals here over the last 14 years, two of Which were August 2001 and Sept 2000. Was curious if anyone else is seeing them this low in elevation and wondering if beetle kill in the Lodgepole pines up in RMNP might be partly the answer? Or maybe they just wander in the late summer? Still have plenty of 3 species of hummingbirds, although no full plumaged Calliope or Rufous males. Had a Black-chinned 2 weeks ago (John Vanderpoel spotted it on a hummingbird workshop trip for Boulder Audubon), But have not spotted one since. Davis - at 6,000 ft. [cobirds] Hummers in southern Larimer County
After a relative paucity of hummingbirds this year (only 4-6 Broad-tails apparently breeding Near here and using the feeders), today I counted 5 male Rufous and 3 male Calliope at the feeders, Along with 10-12 Broad-tailed. Have NOT had the local pinyon jays for the last week, after they were fairly reliable through the end Of June.Unpredictable, really. Common poorwills are common up here, but the other night I could hear 5 individuals from the House. Basically S, SW, NW, N, and E (rocks in all directions, of course), Davis - at 6,000 ft. [cobirds] Broad-tailed hummer and Chipping Sparrow - south Larimer County
After briefly hearing a male broad-tailed hummingbird on April 12 or 13, I put up a feeder.. It promptly froze and had 5-6 inches of snow on it, with the 16 we got up here. I thawed it out and refilled it on 4-19, and saw a female hummingbird visit it on 4-21.As usual, the local hairy woodpeckers come in and pry the yellow 'flower' Pieces out of the hummingbird feeder so it can lap up the sugar water. I guess their Bills are larger than the hummingbirds' J. 2 or more Chipping sparrows showed up yesterday, I think. Still have at least 15-20 migrant juncos (Not the red superman cape type that breed in Colorado, although I have 7-10 of those also). Lost one yesterday to a male Cooper's, I think. Have not seen a white-winged Junco for 2 weeks. No sign of the common redpoll since Saturday. The 'usuals' are around..Pine Siskins, Cassin's finch, Black-capped and Mountain chickadees, Wild Turkeys, Eurasion Collared Dove, Magpie, Steller's Jay, White-breasted and Pygmy Nuthatches, House Finch, American Goldfinch, Western and Mountain Bluebirds, Common Flicker, Hairy and Downy Woodpeckers, American Robin .. Rock and Abert's squirrel, Elk and Mule Deer No sign of any swallows, or Lesser Goldfinch yet. I usually get 2 pair Tree, and 4-5 pair of Violet-green swallows in my boxes, so expect them shortly. Finally…. After years of counting Wild Turkey provisionally on my property list (I had a 20-year old picture of turkeys on the east deck when my in-laws lived here), we had 6 turkeys visit today… Apparently 2 males, each with 2 hens loosely attached. ‘Official’ Davis property list at 938 Colard….. 132 species. Not bad for dry open ponderosa at 6,000 feet, With no deciduous trees to speak of, and ¾ mile from the nearest open water. So the property list is weak on ducks, warblers, gulls, shorebirds, grebes, and anything pelagic, like albatross. (I do have Belted Kingfisher, but don’t expect to see American Dipper here!!!) [cobirds] south Larimer County - bluebirds are in
Heard and saw 3-4 mountain bluebirds (only saw males) today. While cleaning out my 35 birdhouses, I observed That bluebirds will nest in ANY kind of box. from a large (designed for hairy woodpecker) box with a 2.5 inch hole on a dead tree, To a long (hollow branch like) 4x4x16 box with a 2.5 inch hole on the end (trying to get pygmy owls). With the snow cover gone, and the weather warmer, I no longer have 30 redpolls and 40 siskins.. Just 2-3 redpolls, And 5-8 siskins today. Hairy woodpeckers courting with a flicker-like wicca-wicca-wicca. Pygmy nuthatches noisier than usual, don't Know what that means. [cobirds] Sandhill Cranes Boulder County (with a question)
Sunday, about 10 AM, on a field trip near Lyons, 17 of us saw 2 sandhill cranes circling high overhead 1 mile east of Hwy 36 between Boulder and Lyons, on Hygiene Rd. While both birds were obviously cranes, and almost certainly Sandhill Cranes, one bird was at least 35% LARGER than the other. I understand there are maybe 6 different subspecies of Lesser Sandhill Crane, and then, of course, Greater Sandhill Crane, but I found nothing in the literature that would account for the HUGE size difference. I would estimate that the smaller bird was at least 15 inches shorter than the larger, and probably had a wingspan of at least 12 inches less. The birds were circling around, as if interested in coming down, so be alert out there! Any explanations from the birding masters out there? Thanks Davis - at 6,000 ft. [cobirds] Bobolinks - northern Boulder County
At least 2 male bobolinks have returned to the usual field south of Hwy 66 between Longmont And Lyons. Birds are distant to the south end of large grass field, about ½ mile west of McCall Lake (with the ‘Big Bob Farmer’ statue). Scan the fence lines and watch for flight. Davis - at 6,000 ft. [cobirds] southern Larimer county
I've been in SE Texas, so this may be a lame, 'old-news' kinda post but Broad-tailed hummingbird on 4-14, then not seen again until today House Wren calling loudly today Western and Mountain bluebirds been here a while, actively checking out houses. American Kestrel pair making a lot of noise, but probably will refuse the box again! Say's Phoebe calling repeated.I have 2 eave shelves up.maybe I can induce them again. Somebody Is putting grasses in one, but probably House Finch. Columbia silkmoth (pair?) apparently joined at the 'hip' all morning outside my den window. Pretty guys - 5.5-6 inch wingspan Plus the usual suspects, Hairy and Downy, Amer. Goldfinch, both chickadees, Pygmy and WB Nuthatches, Stellers and occasional Pinyon Jays (especially when I put out peanuts). Calling robin sounded speedy, but Did not turn out to be a Black-headed Grosbeak. Chipping Sparrows arrived yesterday, I think. Mourning, Eurasian-Collared, and Rock Doves. No sign of my usual nesting tree and violet green swallows, or Black-Headed Grosbeak, Lesser Goldfinch, Or Lazuli Bunting. YET Lyons area field trip on Mother's Day - May 13th. Davis - at 6,000 ft. [cobirds] Common Merganser young - Lyons
For those that like cute little tykes: There are 3 Common Merganser females and 12 chicks floating around in the pond that goes under the road to the High School in Lyons. Surprisingly, even with new kayaking courses nearby, and a canoe on the lake most of the time, they have managed to breed there Again this year. From the Diamond Shamrock gas station on the east end of Lyons, just 1/3 mile west of the intersection of 36 and 66, it is the First major road south across the creek, and the pond is immediately there. There is an American Dipper nest under the creek bridge, but Haven't seen them with the water up so high.1 miles straight west, in Meadow Park, a golden eagle is nesting up on the face of The south cliff; at least 1 chick, although I haven't looked for it in a while. BTW, we've had a blondish Black Bear up in our neighborhood for the last week or so. And like everyone else, we had a brief (4 min.) visit From a red-headed woodpecker up here in the open Ponderosa a couple of weeks ago. Davis - at 6,000 ft., 4 mi. [cobirds] Broad-tailed Hummingbird, Larimer County
Heard a male whiz by about 10 minutes ago. 1 - filled a feeder hung it. 2 - typed this in. Say's Phoebe showed up this weekend. Pinon jays their usual unpredictable selves, although it helps if I put out peanuts. d Davis at 6,009 ft., 4 miles NW of Lyons, in open Ponderosa Faith is believing what you know ain't so Mark Twain -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups Colorado Birds group. [cobirds] Crows over Larimer County
This evening near dusk, about 1,000 American Crows flew west low over my house in about 15 minutes. I've seen 100-150 flying into the mountains from Hwy36 between Lyons and Boulder at dusk before, but this was astounding. Any corvidiphiles out there? .. that have some sense as to: 1 - some kind of evening roost at 7,000 ft. somewhere, or 2 - just a quick spin up to Estes Park before dark, or 3 - what the heck are they doing anyway? [cobirds] FOY tree swallow, canyon wren, bear - Larimer County (just barely)
Yesterday 4/15, had a tree swallow checking out the birdhouses, heard a canyon wren, Had golden eagle way overhead, and had a bear come through mid day. In cleaning out the 34 birdhouses I have up, I found unusual nesting material in a new, Slightly larger house than Bluebird, with a 2 in hole (I was hoping for a Hairy) about 9 Feet up on the side of a smallish dead ponderosa. Inside the box was about 1.5 inches of mostly pine needles with some VERY fine grass pieces. I've had tree and violet-green swallows, western and mountain bluebirds, pygmy and white-breasted nuthatches, house wren, kestrel, starling, house sparrow (once), chipmunk, and maybe a black-capped or mountain chickadee, but never seen any use of pine needles before. Any ideas, all you collected wisdom out there?
