FORMS

Title: FORMS

Hi All,

I am very interested in something that would let me fill some forms, and bind these form data to xml.

I am evaluating products like Altova's Authentic Web Edition (very expensive, 30k USD per 50 concurrent users), but the functionality, except the client behavior that allows to edit the whole xml before sending it to the server, is near from what I'm looking for.

I have seen Cocoon Forms, and it seems that is what I need.

Could you give me some suggestions, hints, ..., whatever.

Also, Cocoon forms page says that Cocoon 2.1 must be downloaded in order to test the example at url http://localhost:8080/cocoon/samples/xmlform/, but I am unable to get this version neither in the download page nor in the cvs.

Where could I find this package?. Is it present in other releases, or only in 2.1?

Thank you very much in advance.

Carlos.

I have moved my application to a new develop enviroment using cocoon 2.0.3 and the

The problem has been solved.

ESQL QUERY

2002-07-11 Thread Carlos Maté

Hi.

In my cocoon2 based application, queries in a xsp page using "esql" taglib are
executed ¡¡ two times !! although, of course, they are only written once.
It doesn't happen always, but happen.
I think it's related with the form-validator but I'm not sure. And I need the
form-validator.
Can you help me, please?
Thanks.

Re: mm.mysql-2.0.14 + JRE1.4.0 + Cocoon2.0.2 problem resolution?

2002-06-04 Thread Carlos

Michael:

It is listed in de docs for JDK 1.4 that the version of JDBC is 3.0. Most
JDDBC drivers are written for JDBC 2.0 (the one that ships with JSDK 1.3.X)
Until this changes, there are bound to be conflicts between the drivers and
the JRE's implementation of the standard.

If I remember correctly one of the workarounds was to recompile Cocoon with
1.4 but a better bet in your case would be to contact the maintainer of the
driver and ask if there are plans for upgrading to support 1.4

Hi,

you can also set the environment variable display.

If your hostname is "foo" you should set:

setenv DISPLAY foo:0

Maybe that'll help.

is what you drop into your servlet engine for Cocoon to Run.

It is defined by the Cocoon Project of the XML group of the Apache Software foundation. As to who endorses it, I don’t know if there are any major groups...

80/20 Rule: Simplicity vs. complexity. 80 percent of the functionality/feature set of an "ideal" solution set, with only 20 percent of the complexity of the ideal solution or 20 percent of the effort required to build the ideal solution; or put another way, the last 20 percent of the "ideal" feature set is what creates the most complexity

Cocoon doesn't support XSL or XSLT directly. By default it uses Xalan to as
the XSLT engine, Xerxer-J as the parser and FOP as the FO transformer. As
far as XSLT goes, Xalan-J is pretty complete in terms of supporting the XSLT
recommendations. For their feature lists consutl each individual project
page:

http://xml.apache.org/xalan-j/
http://xml.apache.org/xerces2-j/
http://xml.apache.org/fop/

Where we need help (IMO) is in people supporting FOP so that it'll be
feature complete as soon as possible.

I would point out that, if you're a Java programmer, you can always
contribute to the codebase of the project where you see the need. If you're
not (as in my case) you just have to be patient

I don't use it on servlets, prefering to run Saxon by hand

Saxon and Xalan implement different extensions differently. You can run both
Saxon and Xalan from the command line, but be aware from the start that they
will not work exactly the same with a given piece of XSLT stylesheets.

Stephen:

If you want to make sure that it's Xerces and not a difference between
Xerces and the Xalan parser that comes with cocoon (The two parsers use
different extensions and some of those may conflict with cocoon), ran Saxon
with Xerces as the parser using a command like this:

java com.icl.saxon.StyleSheet -x org.apache.xerces.parsers.SAXParser

That will report any error with the XML

Try unpacking the jar files and putting the classes on the JDK's extensions

Re: Problems with installing cocoon2 on tomcat 4.01

That sounds like a problem with Cocoon, X and Batik on Linux. If you're
running on Linux there's instructions for configuring a headless server on
the Cocoon installation page.

Re: Code of a method is longer than 65535 bytes

Java has a limit to the length of a single method. You'll have to break the
method into smaller methods or constants.

That is a java problem, not a cocoon one AFAIK

Look at the document.dtd that ships with cocoon. It's very similar to HTML
and it uses many of the same tags. It's in the cocoon distribution under
xdocs I believe.

See if that works and let us know what you decide

Re: Cocoon and CMS

2002-01-04 Thread Carlos Araya

Michael:

Before deciding on the technologies to be used, you should have a draft
document outlining what you want your CMS to do. I will assume that by CMS
you mean a Content Management System as opposed to a Course Management
System.

If you know what you want and can send it back to the list it would be a
good starting point for discussion

In the Tomcat directory, there is startup.bat and a shutdown.bat that you
can use to supply the parameters to tomcat.exe.

As for Cocoon, it's a traight installation

When you get it done, can you please document it and send it back to the

Subject: newbie needs help

My experience with Tomcat is minimal and I'm using Cocoon for the first
time, so please bear with me. I've installed both Tomcat and Cocoon and was
able to get http://localhost:8080/cocoon/welcome to display all the links.

However, I'm at a lost in trying to figure out where some these files are
stored. To begin with, I can't find the directory "welcome" from
http://localhost:8080/cocoon/welcome anywhere in
"{TOMCAT_HOME}\webapps\cocoon". I was able to figure out that
http://localhost:8080/cocoon/xsp/simple is
"{TOMCAT_HOME}\webapps\cocoon\docs\samples\xsp\simple.xsp" but how does
Tomcat map to that?

Thanks,
Uy Hoang

[Best Practices] 2nd Request

2001-12-20 Thread Carlos Araya

[I apologize for the crossposting but I think this is important to both
lists]

A while back I made a request for best practices and briefly explained what
best practices were and why I thought they were important. I can understand
that right before Xmas is not the best time to ask for stuff like that and I
may not have been clear enough with the request, so I'm sending it again
with a better (I hope) explanation and hoping that the Xmas break gives me a
better response :-)

Why best practices?

We all tweak our cocoon installations for best performance and there's
always someone asking how do you do the thing you just completed. An example
would be, "I'm having problems with the sitemap on a Linux system because of
the X server." The answer to that question is now part of the installation
instructions and like it there are a lot of things that people have already
done and that can help other members of the community.

I have volunteered to write all this tips and tricks into a document that
can be included into the Cocoon documentation if there is enough interest.

Why are best practices important?

Andreas:

I was having the same problem that you're having and following the
instructions from the headless section under Tomcat 4.0

Why don't you try it and see if it works?

Another option is for you to see if you can find the stack trace on your log
directory and let us know what the error is

Whether you can believe it or not, Batik has been a frequent bottleneck for
people installing Cocon2 on Linux

If you're planning to use Batik on Linux, then yes. You need either an X
server, an emulator or a Java implementation of AWT that doesn't require X
(I believe that 1.4 will do that but it's still Beta)

RE: Stuck with Cocoon 2.0 installation

2001-12-19 Thread Aguirre, Carlos (C.)

did you read the documentation

Linux/Headless/Batik

If you are using unix with the sun jdk, it's awt implementation requires you
to use X even if you aren't actually displaying anything. One simple
solution is to use a different implementation of the awt.

>From www.eteks.com you can get an awt replacement that doesn't need X:
http://www.eteks.com/pja/en.
Unpack the jars into a place where your jdk will be able to use them--
$JAVAHOME/jre/classes works for j2sdk1.3
Then add to your tomcat startup script:

 export CATALINA_OPTS='-Dawt.toolkit=com.eteks.awt.PJAToolkit \
  -Djava.awt.graphicsenv=com.eteks.java2d.PJAGraphicsEnvironment \
  -Djava.awt.fonts=/usr/local/jdk/jre/lib/fonts/'

(CATALINA_OPTS if it's 4, TOMCAT_OPTS if it's 3)

(Re)start Tomcat and enjoy!

Re: Stuck with Cocoon 2.0 installation

2001-12-19 Thread Carlos

Please check the installation instructions under tomcat 4.0 and the scroll
down to where it says "headless/linux/batik" You'll need to follow those
steps in order to get Cocoon running.

FYI, the error most likely means that Batik can't access the X server.

Re: Getting rid of 8080: in URL

2001-12-13 Thread Carlos Araya

Don't recompile anything, go to tomcat's configuration file and change the
8080 for 80. Note that by doing this you're preventing any other server from
unning on port 80

Another alternative is to use AJP1.3 and the warp connector delivered with
Tomcat, check the Tomcat documentation. That's a tomcat issue, not a cocoon
problem

Re: [C2] The sitemap handler's sitemap is not available

2001-12-12 Thread Carlos Araya

First thing to check is whether Batik is running. If it is and you get that
error, then it might be Batik. Look at the solution proposed on
http://xml.apache.org/cocoon/installing/index.html and scroll down until you
find headles/linux/batik

It's been known to work with Tomcat 4 but it may very well work with Tomcat
3.X

Re: starting Xvfb for Cocoon

2001-12-11 Thread Carlos

Perhaps I wasn't clear enough:

Xvfb will not solve the problem of you trying to run tomcat/cocooon
alongside Apache, that's what mod_webapp is for.

Xvfb will solve the problem of you not being able to use Batik with your
Cocoon SVG graphics.

Eventually you will need Xvfb but for now you need mod_webapp to integrate
coocoon with Apache

Re: starting Xvfb for Cocoon

2001-12-11 Thread Carlos

Stephan:

In addition to Xvbf you need to downlod mod_webapp from the jakarta website.
You then need to configure webapp to work with Tomcat.

Xvbf is the solution to a different problem

The first suggestion would be to try Cocoon 2.0 final. That may be the
cause.

Another thing to consider is, as you said, upgrade the JDK, but I will
defer to the more technical users as to whether that's absolutely
neccessary

It is only necessary if you will be doing a lot of graphical work with FOP, which uses Batik as the image library. In the installation page (http://xml.apache.org/cocoon/installing/index.html) there are instructions for installing Cocoon with an alternative AWT that does not use X.

Scroll down to the “Linux/Headless/Batik” section under Tomcat 4.0 for the details

I think that this is a FAQ look in the group for messages I sent related to running a "headless server".  In essence, if you don't need to use batik, no you don't need the X-server.

Some of the alternative solutions to this problem aren't really feasible... I wound up running the Xvbf daemon instead...

Hi,
I wonder if you can help me?
I am installing Cocoon2 on a HP-UX system. However, I don't want to run
an X-server on this system. I know batik/FOP requires this.
Is there anyway around this?
Is there a way to not install batik/FOP as part of cocoon2?

I would be very grateful for any suggestions.

2001-11-30 Thread Carlos Araya

To be more precise, and quoting from the installation instructions:

Instead, a hack which some people have found to work is (in the case of
Tomcat 3.2) renaming xml.jar as zxml.jar and parser.jar as zparser.jar. For
other versions try renaming crimson.jar.

Also, as Max suggested, you may want to consider upgrading to Cocoon 2.

Re: running Tomcat in background when I log off

Title: Re: running Tomcat in background when I log off

You should run the scrip located at:

/bin/startup.sh

That has always worked for me to keep Tomcat working when I log off

On Linux Tomcat is running fine when I'm logged in.
But when I log off all tasks are killed (including
Tomcat)
How can I leave Tomcat running when I log off?

"nohup" trick won't work by some reason

and how are you  start Tomcat ?
is it tomcat.sh start or tomcat.sh run or something else?

Getting read of the X server dependency

2001-08-15 Thread Carlos

A while back some people gave solutions as to how to remove the dependency
on a running X server. Some of them included removing all the references to
Batik from the site map, others included downloading a library that would
make X unnecessary, what's the name of the library and where can I download
it from?

TIA

Re: 2.1? Stable Software Needed

2001-07-21 Thread Carlos Araya

I would like to point out that the cocoon team has done a good job of
balancing feature requests with development release time. If what you need
is stable and mature software perhaps you'd like to consider using Cocoon
1.X series and see if it does what you need (which is what I did) while
features are completed and the code matures enough to meet your
requirements.

Or, more bluntly, use commercial software if it gives you the more stable
and usable system that you're looking for.

Once upon a time, "Steven Punte" was seen writting:

Generating PDF on the fly

2001-07-12 Thread Carlos

I'm trying to generate PDF documents on the fly using docbook (4.1.2) and
Norman Walsh's stylesheets. It will not generate the PDF document, only
display the text. What is the correct way of doing it? Is there a trick I'm
not using?
