Why not start with using photos of the art as your screensaver. Select a
folder of art so that the pictures will fade in and fade to the next
photo as people walk by. That could spark some curiosity. Tell them how
easy it is to do that, then show them how.

Then clear off the desktop and leave a link, alias, folder--some way for
a passer-by to go directly into an easy to use catalog. Do you have a
catalog program that works OK as read-only?

Do you have a projector?

Betty

You have to make it usefully important. I would make art-related content
very accessible. This may not happen until you do get it displaying your
art inventory.

Mac OS 10.4.x is VERY stable and dependable.

I's either get one now, or do as Betty suggests.
Get one with OS 10.4 installed and the bonus

Have you done a good job of removing accumulated dust? Dust acts as an
insulator, and components covered with dust will heat up to a higher
temperature, thereby causing thermostatic fans to speed up.

[CGUYS] Computer fan

2007-08-19 Thread Robert
I have a Dell XPS desktop PC that is about 4 or 5 years old. I believe
in keeping the computer running all the time (because this household
computer has multiple user profiles, is used frequently, and takes about
10 minutes to boot up in Windows XP Home).

Lately, a fan is making some noise. Not a screeching or scraping noise,
just an ordinary fan noise that gets louder and softer at random over a
cycle of about 3 -- 5 minutes. (When the computer is used with nearly
100% CPU the fan noise understandably increases, but the noise will
increase for a minute or two when there is is little CPU activity and
then decrease.) I don't know if the noise originates from the CPU fan
or the power supply fan.

Should I be worried?

Using Lavalys Everest, the following is measured during low fan activity:

CPU fan: 1162 RPM
Chassis fan: 1756 RPM

Higher activity:
CPU fan: 1464 RPM
Chassis fan: 2129 RPM

Temperature (lower activity):
Motherboard: 39 C.
CPU: 48 C.

Temperature (higher activity):
Motherboard: 40 C.
CPU: 60 C.

[CGUYS] The Topic [Was: Bill Nye, the anti-God "Science Guy"

2007-08-19 Thread Tom Piwowar
>My question is a simple one. When did this list get hijacked by
>extremists who think it's a forum to insist on socialized medicine and to
>bash Christians?

This list frequently goes a little far afield in August. A few weeks ago
one List member noted this and posted a provocative Mac vs Windows link,
but got no takers. (Even though the material cited was quite good).

This year health care and Bill Nye have gotten a good run. While
literally not on topic I think these discussions reflect the context in
which we do our computing. The reason there were so many posts is that
people are becoming increasingly frustrated my the USA's mismanagement of
technology and over emphasis on favoring a small number of entrenched,
anti-innovative corporations.

Earlier today I was replaying a podcast of a Science Friday interview
with Thomas Friedman about his recent book "The World is Flat." An
important part of Friedman book is a warning about the USA's
mismanagement of technology. Much like the post here about Gov. Rick
Perry's line-item veto of $2.7 million of education funding. Friedman
spoke of Bush's slashing of funding for the National Science Foundation
and scientific research in general. Friedman decried a management style
that did not value asking questions because all questions were answered
by ideology (wasn't this in vogue during a period of history called the
Dark Ages?). Friedman also pointed out that if the USA stops getting it
right the rest of the world will get it right and the USA will be left
behind in the world of technology and the general world economy.

So in a bigger sense the recent discussion of health care and Bill Nye is
about broken computers. Just not computers that are already broken. Some
of us are trying to figure out how to keep our computers from being
broken in the future.

I have a BETTER question. When did this list get hijacked by whining

"hijacked" and "extremists" and "bash?"

If the list had been hijacked, then, by definition, nobody else would

characterization is just plain bizzonga. With flies all over it. I actually
wanted to say "bullshit," which would have been more in character for me,

of vulgarities to a minimum.

But, this time, I looked at that ol' unwritten rule, and I said,
"Fuck it!"

What does that have to do with computers?

Who cares? If you don't like the subject of a post, then delete it,
and leave the rest of us alone to read it, delete it, or respond to it, as
WE choose.

For the record...I don't know any Christian who thinks the moon actually
lights up. We don't think it's made of cheese either.

What does that have to do with computers?

But it really doesn't matter, because this is a computer list, or at least
it used to be.

It still is, your opinion to the contrary notwithstanding.

My personal beliefs should never be discussed and neither should yours.

That's just YOUR personal belief. According to you, you shouldn't
have discussed it. But, then, that's just MY personal belief.

Who cares what your political views are?

Who wants to know, and why do you ask?

It's too bad.

 B-b-b-b-b-b-b-bad.

I wish there was a moderator who would take control because I don't want
to hear liberals spouting their lunacy any more than I want to read the
extreme right venting theirs.

That's just YOUR personal belief. Which you said you shouldn't discuss.

The fact of the matter is that you want to censor and control the
content of an unmoderated list, which is the Internet equivalent of trying
to divide by zero. The list is unmoderated, which means people can say
whatever the hell they want, about whatever subject they want, and NOBODY
has to read any given post, and NOBODY has to respond to any given post. If
Steve wants to talk about theocrats in Waco, and nobody wants to engage him
in that subject, then his thread will die a quick death. If people want to
respond by discussing the interface (if any) of science and religion, then
the thread will last until it finishes, or morphs into something else. You
are free to delete every single post by Steve, if you want, and every
single post by those who discuss the Bill Nye/Waco post, if you want. No
part of that discussion will be at your expense. You don't have to read a
word of it. BUT: You have no right to deprive those who enjoy that
discussion the pleasure of it, simply because you have this infantile
expectation that an unmoderated list is automatically supposed to conform
to your subjectively pure and orthodox notion of it.

I want to learn more about computers, and I want to help others if I can.

Then why are you sulking and pouting that you are going to pick up
your marbles and go home, just because you are powerless to prevent a
discussion AMONG OTHERS, which discussion you are free to ignore with impunity?

It sounds like you are more interested in everybody talking about
only YOUR PERSONAL narrow range of subjects, and nothing else, rather than
being of "help" to anyone. You would rather control us than help us, it
looks like, and, now that you have discovered you can't control us, you're
going to take a powder.

As Pee Wee Herman would say: "Ral mature!"

A good moderator would insist that we stick to the topic.

That's just YOUR personal belief. Actually, a good moderator would
have a witty, clever, pithy, and funny remark to make about Bill Nye, Waco
theocrats, and/or Steve Rigby. He or she might even be vulgar.

I would be thrilled if that would happen.

 You must be easily entertained.

Obviously there isn't a moderator.

No, there isn't one. Instead, there are about 100 of us. We moderate
the list en masse. And we do a pretty damned good job, too.

This is no place for me.

 That's just YOUR personal belief.

I know you don't care.

 No fair. You peeked.

I don't care that you don't care.

Which is why you took pains to point it out.

I wanted to voice my opinion about it before I left.

What does that have to do with computers?

It's too bad...

As I see it, YOU are the piteous character here, and not us.

I'd buy the current Mac with 10.4--AFTER the release date for
10.5/Leopard is announced. That way you have the current OS and a FREE
upgrade to the new one when it comes out. You'll have the chance to get
used to Tiger, and can wait until Leopard is tweaked to 10.5.1. My
problem is that I want a free Nano. That deal expires Sept. 16th. The
new OS release date probably won't be announced until the following
week. But a free Nano is worth more than a free OS--$199 vs $129.

Apple usually gives a free upgrade to a new OS to buyers who purchase
after the announcement and before new Macs are shipped with the new OS.
That's how we went from Jaguar to Panther free. Watch the Apple site and
Apple rumor sites for details.

BOGO!!

[CGUYS] Bill Nye, the whole sordid mess

2007-08-19 Thread Daniel Else
You asked for it, now here is the whole story, the text of the Waco
Tribune-Herald post-Apocalype account of the McClennan Community College
incident (it hardly seems worthy of being called a "confrontation"). In defense
of the good folks of Waco, Bill's presentation (actually both of them, for
there were two shows at 1:30 and 7:00 on April 5, 2006) seems to have been
received rather well.

I'm also including a much more recent story about the demise of the
state-funded lecture program that brought Bill to the MCC.

Bur first, the original story:

‘The Science Guy’ is entertaining and provocative at MCC lecture

Thursday, April 06, 2006

By Tim Woods

Waco Tribune-Herald staff writer

Audience members who expected to see Bill Nye “The Science Guy” conduct
experiments and wow their children received quite a surprise Wednesday when Nye
spoke at McLennan Community College.

Nye instead addressed such topics as Mars exploration, global warming and
energy consumption, particularly oil and gas. He even ruffled a few religious
feathers along the way.

The scientist with a background in stand-up and sketch comedy kept spectators
interested, entertained and at ease with his funny, sometimes hilarious,
delivery.

Speaking as part of MCC’s Distinguished Lecturer Series, Nye spoke to two
audiences, one at 1:30 p.m. and the second at 7 p.m., of about 600 each. He
said the first audience, though littered with young children listening to some
rather adult scientific topics, “was very supportive.”

The second group also was rapt from the beginning, greeting the scientist with
a raucous standing ovation upon his introduction.

“You haven’t heard the presentation yet!” Nye told them.

Opening with a discussion of Mars and his hopes for further discovery on the
neighboring planet, Nye encouraged the audience to take interest in discovery
and “change the world,” a mantra he repeated throughout.

Nye indicated that the presence of water in Mars’ atmosphere - evidenced by the
planet’s ability to form frost - leads him to believe that there is a strong
possibility that the planet once supported life.

The Emmy-winning scientist angered a few audience members when he criticized
literal interpretation of the biblical verse Genesis 1:16, which reads: “God
made two great lights - the greater light to govern the day and the lesser
light to govern the night. He also made the stars.”

He pointed out that the sun, the “greater light,” is but one of countless stars
and that the “lesser light” is the moon, which really is not a light at all,
rather a reflector of light.

A number of audience members left the room at that point, visibly angered by
what some perceived as irreverence.

“We believe in a God!” exclaimed one woman as she left the room with three
young children.

Nye also was critical of what he said was governmental agencies’ lack of
action, even lack of understanding, in protecting the Earth from global warming
and wasted resources.

Nye’s educational science show won 28 Emmy awards during its television run
from 1992-98.

It seemed most in attendance were pleased to hear Nye speak, and some were even
awed by the presence of a childhood icon.

“How cool is that, to be face to face with the man, Bill Nye?” said Jared
McClure, who worked sound and video for the event. “And he’s funny, too.”

And Now, the Other Story

MCC board mulls tough options to handle state funding cut
798 words
20 July 2007

By Tim Woods

Waco Tribune-Herald staff writer

The McLennan Community College board of trustees met Thursday to discuss their
budget options following Gov. Rick Perry's June 15 line-item veto, which will
take $2.7 million in funding over the next two years from the school.

After looking at six budget proposals presented by MCC's administration, the
board agreed on two things: They have no good options and they have no interest
in raising taxes.

In considering the proposals, the board discussed making up for the lost funds
through raising tuition, which would hit students in the pocketbook; not giving
faculty and staff their standard raises, which could anger MCC employees; or
raising taxes, which would come on the heels of a $74.5 million bond McLennan
County voters approved for the school in November. Whatever route the board
decides to go, budget cuts will be part of the formula, officials said.

Currently, the school has the seventh-highest tuition out of the state's 50
community college districts, and the 34th-highest tax rate.

"There are no good choices here," MCC president Dennis Michaelis said. "Raising
taxes isn't a good choice, but neither is raising tuition."

Board members ultimately appeared to agree that they want to avoid raising
taxes if at all possible.

"I don't want to raise taxes for the citizens of McLennan County, after all
they've already done for us," board member Randy Cox said. "I don't want to
heap any more on them."

While acknowledging that he agree

Creating a less expensive, probably single-payer, health care system that
nearly everybody wants isn't socialism. It isn't welfare, since we will be
paying for it, only we will pay significantly less than with the current
for-profit system. It's smart fiscal policy when you can improve service and
reduce price; doesn't matter whether it's a private or public system, or
combination of both, as long as it works better, i.e. more effectively and
economically, than what we have.

Smart fiscal policy makes sense at home, in the community, nationally, and
internationally. That means getting what we pay for at the best quality we can
afford, at the best price. It also means that you don't go into debt to pay for
necessities and leave that debt for your children to repay.

This applies to health care as well as electronics choices and purchases, and
many other fiscal/economic decisions we all need to make.

I think the Netherlands, Sweden, West Germany, even France in some ways are
preferable models
but Canada does have something going for it. A national health insurance (with
essentially doctors)
might be more sellable. There is alot of objective evidence that one thing our
