You mean that all of the sudden in Maryland there is now a 6% tax on computer consulting earnings? How, btw, is this even considered a sales tax? This was an interesting read. I would take a small exception to the first study group being students. I can attest that it is more difficult to have one's mind changed as one gets older ;-) . I'm sure there must be an equation out there for this condition. Regardless, it's worth reading, thanks. Richard P. I think that we all need to keep an open mind (small as it may be) and many different opinions should be welcomed. When science sorts out the various opinions, then we will be closer to fact. An interesting and distressing series apropos this discussion is "The Hidden Workings of Our Minds" at http://www.spring.org.uk/2007/12/hidden-workings-of-our-minds.php Based on experimental findings... 1. When coming up with their explanations, people don't seem to access the correct thought process(es). If they do then it only happens when the explanation is plausible. 2. Sometimes people do report the correct reason for what they've done, but it's probably only a coincidence. Makes one humble. * ==> QUICK LIST-COMMAND REFERENCE - Put the following commands in <== * ==> the body of an email & send 'em to: [EMAIL PROTECTED] <== * Join the list: SUBSCRIBE COMPUTERGUYS-L Your Name * Too much mail? I live and work in MD and the client is in MD (the state of MD, actually). What's the deal with this new tax? Re: [CGUYS] SMTP server app?
Yes, my host has smtp. But like pretty much ALL hosts these days, they no longer allow 'relaying' or whatever it's called. I can create 1000 email accounts and they'll all work fine. But when a forum member clicks a button "send email to this (other) user", PHP mail() sends it with *their* registered return email address, it does NOT come from an account I've set up. So it gets rejected. Right now I just have email features turned off. All forum 'business' email works fine since it all comes from _my_ account. But that really wouldn't work for people emailing each other. Sorry, I cannot login with Putty right now. It wants a username and password and I'm just too damn used to using Roboform and I really don't want to hassle with trying to find the darn login. The forum's admin control panel tells me it's "Linux, Apache 2.0.6.1 (cgi)" if that helps. I vaguely remember reading on their forum they use Posix(?). Again, if this is a lot of trouble, fighting spam or otherwise, I'll just leave emails turned off. Members can still PM each other and they can subscribe to instant email notifications of PMs (which come from my [EMAIL PROTECTED] account). Re: [CGUYS] SMTP server app?
Since you have jailed access you will have some potential difficulty installing anything not already installed. I am a confused though - it sounds as though the forum host already is running an SMTP server. Is that the case or are you saying that the HOSTING organization runs a SMTP server, but the specific SERVER that runs your forum does not? In any event - log into your jailed ssh access and run: uname -a That should spit back what flavor of *nix you are running. Most likely it comes with an SMTP service already present. I think we need more details before can provide substantive help. Re: [CGUYS] What to charge for contract to develop web content?
Billable hours are the key factor - how much of your time will be spent on billable hours, and how much on finding clients / closing the deal? I think figuring out what you want to make is the wrong approach though - I want to make a million bucks, but that won't be happening anytime soon. Far better to do some research and figure out what the going rate is. To do that you have to first figure out what the service you are offering is. Are you a writer? They usually get paid per word as a freelancer - you could probably find out what most trade publications and such are paying for freelance content. Are you a researcher? That is a different animal - if most of your work is research rather than writing, then hourly is appropriate. I personally know researchers who charge $75.00 an hour and get it, because they are doing research for people who themselves value their own labor at more than that, so every hour they can off load is profit for them. Re: [CGUYS] What to charge for contract to develop web content?
Because they don't have to hire/pay them every week if they don't need the services. Plus there apparently is a multitude of savings in not paying benefits (vacation, sick days, retirement, health insurance, training), overtime, labor issues, FICA, and not having the liability insurance costs. All of that gets thrown on the back of the freelancer. In my area, companies can expand or contract with the news cycle without being burdened by the the costs during a down time. Plus with the pay delay, they make money off of the interest. Just my 2 cents. Richard P. Hope not too off-topic, but on the topic of salaries-- Why is it organizations are willing to pay a free-lance photographer $90-125/hour, but balk at paying a staff photographer $60K/year, which is only $30/hr? I know there's the whole benefits/pension issue, but the savings for the photography are huge. And I'm talking about places that use these photographers on a weekly basis. Don't make the mistake I made when I was a beginning professional photographer. Don't think you're only worth what a burger flipper makes. Charge high, very high! Either get it or turn it down and keep your prices high. When they pay it, it will make up for the jobs you loose and the headaches from the nit pickers who want the world for a dime. If they want you, they obviously have a reason. Make sure they pay for what they want. Re: [CGUYS] What to charge for contract to develop web content?
>I don't see how an independent contractor could charge much less than $30/hr >and still make a living, given all the added costs and down time. Sorry, I divided wrong. For independent contractors the divisor is typically 1000, for full-time staff 2000. So I should have written $60/hour. I was surprised that the survey showed that 60% made less than $60,000. This must be due to outsourcing to India and the fact that top management needs to cheat everyone else to scrape up the dough for their $mega million salaries. This recalls yesterday's news of the MRI monitoring of subjects drinking wine that they were told cost $10 vs. $90. Make your clients happy by charging them more.
