[CGUYS] USB Malfunction

2008-01-28 Thread Jay Montero
Can anyone tell me why on a Windows XP machine with a scanner, printer, and
multi-card reader all on USB the printer loses connectivity from time to time?
Also I noticed in Device Manager there are 4 USB controller though there are 6
USB ports. What is the relation?

[CGUYS] ebay experiences

2008-01-28 Thread gerald
1. my ebay password is very unstable. as long as firefox holds it in memory,
it works. if I try to enter it, it does not.

2. ebay sends me a notice about every 3 months stating that i must change my
password.

3. i recently made a purchase of final cut express 4 and got the following
message from ebay:

The following is a notice from eBay Trust Safety regarding:

Item Number - 320209653865

Item Title - FINAL CUT EXPRESS 4 HD VIDEO EDITING SOFTWARE NEW $199

Our records show that you were a bidder or buyer of one or more of this
seller's items. We recently removed this seller's active listings and suspended
the seller's trading privileges. Due to privacy concerns we cannot share
further details about this seller.

If the seller asks you to complete this transaction outside of eBay, we
strongly recommend that you do not proceed with the transaction. Transactions
for items listed on eBay but then completed off of the eBay platform are not
covered by buyer protection programs offered by eBay and can be highly
indicative of fraud. For more information on Offers to Buy or Sell Outside of
eBay, copy and past the following Help Page link into your browser:

If you have already paid for this item but have not received it, you should
take all possible steps to receive reimbursement.

4. this person had a positive rating of 98.5% on about 150 replies.

5. i went to paypal for dispute resolution, and my payment was refunded in one
day???

i have purchased probably a thousand items off of ebay. somewhere around 7-8
years ago, someone stiffed me out of $50. i have twice gotten merchandise that
was not quite up to snuff.

I have noticed two things, and I can't explain why those design decisions
were made.

1. Port USB0 is different from USB1 - therefore a printer installed on USB0
is not installed on USB1. If the printer gets switched from USB0 to USB1,
it is no longer installed/connected for use.

2. Occasionally Windows will think that the order of USB ports is different
from before. Not sure why. This leads to issues related to 1, above. 1
will also happen if something is unplugged from one physical port and
plugged into another physical USB port.

Re: [CGUYS] USB Malfunction

2008-01-28 Thread Fred Holmes
This seems to be generally true. I've seen this on every computer I have,
admittedly all Windows 2000. I suspect that each piece of USB hardware
(controller, hub, etc, as well as peripheral) has a unique hardware address,
similar to the MAC address that Ethernet adapters and other networking hardware
have.

If something auto-installs, then it will re-install automatically when plugged
into a different USB port, and the installation may be transparent (invisible
to the user). If the printer requires manual installation (selection of the
printer make/model from a list), then it must be manually reinstalled if you
change the USB port that it is connected to. If you disconnect something that
doesn't auto-install, be sure to plug it back into the same port.

Hmm I don't use ebay all that much but I have never had them ask me to
change my password in the 10 or so years I've used them. Did you

If you Google the terms:
ebay password change notification
it will come up with a scam that sounds similar. You might want to
verify directly with EBay that they are in fact the ones requesting your
password change. You could maybe find out the reason behind the frequent
change requests.

Re: [CGUYS] ebay experiences

2008-01-28 Thread db
In my opinion, ebay is a great thing but the system is complex and in my
opinion things get problematic too often.

I don't buy there unless I must because too often some aspect or
another becomes messily time consuming for me. I have been ripped off
once and a few years ago, someone hacked and started using my account.
In my last purchase, because of ebay's complex relationships with their
vendors and different purchasing paths, their shopping cart software
glitched in the process of my making an instant purchase from one vendor
and my credit card was charged via Pay Pal for a second vendor's item
that I only looked at ... who didn't even accept credit cards.

Ebay and paypal straightened up the problem and apologized ... said
their engineers were looking at the problem ... but it consumed a lot of
my time and attention to get thru that restitution process that involved
ebay, their quasi, independent PayPal and two vendors.

I prefer to not subject myself to such complexity but sometime ebay is
the only place I can get an item so then I take the risk but knowing
that the price will be good but the overhead can turn out to be costly.

Some of you might find it interesting to watch the movie trilogy: Man of

interesting to observe the attitude that this government has towards its

 Whatever you want to believe.

It has always amazed me that people want privacy but
leave it all hang out (so to speak) In this day of
technology you leave so many digital footprints out
there. Kind of reminds me of the Head of google
getting all bent out of shape when Cnet googled his
info and let everyone know it.
 snip

In Europe it is never expected to have the kind of
privacy folks think they have here in America. I do
not expect privacy. If I am doing wrong I expect to
be caught. I do not expect anyone to cover my
tracks. (Even if I am paying them, it is not their
job to cover for my criminal activity.)

It's my understanding that Europe and the US have
privacy policies that are almost exact opposites. In
the US, you have laws/policies against warrantless
searches, they aren't allowed to aggregate your data.
That is, the IRS can't compare your tax return with
Social Security Administration records. Business on
the other hand doesn't have those same kind of
restrictions (see the aforementioned case where cNet
got the scoop on the CEO?COO? of Google).

In Europe, the government can get any information they
want, usually businesses can't share personal data
across boundaries.

Western European born, US Raised, but raised with an understanding
that there are two realms you live in, spiritual/political-governmental.

Render unto Caesar, that which is Caesar and render unto God that
which is God. 4th Commandment stuff. (Remember I come from a highly
religious background)

I never thought that government is for me. Government is for
government. I owe them taxes and obeying laws. I serve the church
and it gets my first allegiance.

Do governments serve themselves? Yes all the time. Any institution
that has been around becomes intrenched in institutional
mentality. That does not mean I have to quite listening to them.

Any government that operates under the delusion that you can have
complete privacy will become a victim of its own delusions.

If everyone put up a fence to protect their privacy and anyone
crossed over that fence, we would fast become a victim of it. My
privacy only exists until it butts up against someone else's. We
have built a shibboleth out of privacy, something that has never
really existed.

Yes.

Never, EVER answer email from eBay, PayPal, a bank, or any other
institution that you do business through. The majority of these places
have messages within their sites. Always log on through a secure
connection in your web browser -- using your own links and NOT the ones
provided in the email -- and see if there is a copy of the email you
received in your message box. 99% of the time, there will be none.

No legitimate (or even semi-legitimate) business will contact you
through email concerning account and other private information. You may
receive a notice asking you to log on and confirm things, but if so, you
do so through your own link and not any link provided in the email and
you should find a copy of the message in any messages their system has.
If there is no copy or there is no messaging system in the site, call
them and talk to a human if the request is bothering you. I just ignore
them if I log on and see everything is in order.
