You said to ultimately put into your Mac- then why use an old one.
Buy a new Hard drive; get an enclosure (15 bucks is max) and you are home free.
You can clone the drive and then replace the one in your computer.

I need a new drive for my MacBook. I'm considering two external USB
drives that I might open, remove from the case and put into my Mac,
after testing for a few weeks.

I picked up a WD My Passport Essential 500GB drive on Friday, but
reviews don't look good. How does it compare to the Seagate FreeAgent
portable drive? I have a larger FreeAgent drive that was defective and
replaced; it's been working fine since then. The WD Passport has a
microUSB port like a digital camera, and the cable tends to get
disconnected.

My other option is to buy a bare drive and an enclosure for the old
drive. 5400 RPM is OK. Max [supported] drive size for my MacBook is
500GB. Which bare drives are more reliable?

[CGUYS] A tale of two Gulags

2009-11-30 Thread Reid Katan

Quoting b_s-wilk b1sun...@yahoo.es:

The representation you describe can be done through good old union
organizing. It's daunting because there are too many coders who can't
imagine being in a union, and potential employers who fight
unionization with vicious ferocity. It's worth fighting for
representation.

I find it kind of odd that the coders (and all the other unwashed
masses) feel like they have to put in extra time without compensation
in fear of losing their jobs, but at the other end, companies pay COEs
obscene bonuses in order to retain top talent.

Perhaps instead of paying millions to a few at the top, they should
spend that money to retain the talent that's actually doing the work
of the company.

2009-11-30 Thread mike
If you buy an external drive, they may not have the full warranty of a bare
drive. I worry more about warranty length and ease of exchange, WD,
seagate...between the two I can't say which I've had better or worse luck.

I've a friend who replaced his 5400 drive with a 7200 drive in his macbook
pro, he said the difference was significant. You don't need the speed of a
7200 externally, but I would get one for your system drive if at all you
can.

See, we are not dealing here with actual talent, productivity,

systems in which those who have found their way to the top, one way or

It's ironic that most companies can exist and prosper without top
management, but will fail catastrophically without labor.

Too many workers have no idea about the kind of power they could have by

We don't agree on much, Steve, but this we do.

The trouble happens when some people have bought into believing their guy or
girl isn't part of the caste system, and are blind to the real behind the
scenes. The players at the top depend on the little guys arguing at the
bottom so they don't see what is actually happening, and argue we do.

The WD My Passport drive is new--got it last week on Black Friday. It
was cheaper than buying a bare drive.

I'd like to know if it's any good before voiding my warranty by opening
the enclosure. Actually, I could register the drive's S/N instead of the
enclosure's S/N and still maintain the warranty for the drive only.

Is a WD notebook drive any good, or should I consider another mfg?

I think it is a crap shoot. Drive quality for various brands goes up
and down. The major brands are all usually quite good. You can read
about problems with recently made drives, but by the time you read
about it the problem drive has probably been fixed or changed and some
other drive is having now problems. So I never stress over brand. It
is probably safest to buy a drive that has been in production long
enough for reviews to accumulate, but then you may be missing out on
the latest technology.

I've been watching for laptops for a friend, and I've seen nothing

Re: [CGUYS] A tale of two Gulags

The capitalist caste system can be broken. It's not like the real caste
system where those who reject it are designated to be in the outcaste
caste, and others are told that their fate depends on accepting their
lot and hoping to be reborn in a higher caste. The capitalist castes are
a state of mind where people have allowed themselves to be disadvantaged
through lack of organization and cooperation.

With your attitude that the 'big guys' control the 'little guys', then
the 'little guys' will remain stuck at the bottom. My attitude with
every job, and in working for myself, is that I ALWAYS work for myself
first and foremost. When I make customers or employers look good, it
makes me look good, increasing the value of what I produce.

If you let others take that away from you, you're complicit in hurting
yourself, even though changing the situation is yet harder than most
work. Why be so downtrodden?

There's no real cons. I use Dropbox on my Macbook, Windows 7 running
in VirtualBox, a Ubuntu machine and my wife's iBook. Documents saved
in the Dropbox folder exist in the cloud and on every machine you run
Dropbox on. lt is great for really important current documents. It
doesn't take the place of a good backup strategy. It is a very useful
tool. Items too large to email can be placed in the public folder
inside your Dropbox. Right clicking on the item allows you to copy a
url you can email and that will trigger a download. Up to 2gb it's
free with no ads. I love it. I find it hard to believe that everyone
on this list doesn't use it.
