Allow me to continue your llist just a little bit . My comments are based
on 7.0, not the new 7.0-2, and refer to a Customized Development
installation.

Install steps on the left are upside down - Configure X should be at
the top, Select Installation Class at the bottom.Progress is
conventionally displayed as left to right or upwards (Climbing a tree, the
path to heaven, etc.). so as better to conform to a traffic signal etaphor,
and conform to 1st quadrant geometry that every one is used to and
understands.

The installation class is input before the install/upgrade decision. This
is frustrating nonsense because during an update the installation class cannot
be changed from what was selected at the initial installl.IMO, it's a
basic requirement that it should be able to be changed, including deleting
RPMs.

Install or Update should include a third option - update from another
Mandrake on another partition (used read-only).Essential!

The input of networking information is too late, since networking
characteristics influence the selection of RPMs to install.

Ipchains is not set up according to the security level chosen - you just
can't talk about medium or high security without this.

/etc/hosts is not set up - the networking information collected should
include what is necessary to do this.

The directory setup under /mnt is useless for networked machines. Each
machine needs a /mnt/local/ and a /mnt/remote/ or
/mnt//. Otherwise total confusion reigns.

The booting process adds /mnt/floppy, /mnt/cdrom, etc if they do not exist.
Surely this process should work from the contents of /etc/fstab?

Further, this directory creation is done AFTER the local filesystems are
mounted.

Crazy mount points and desktop icons are set up, eg 'DOS_hda5'. Why are
these not /mnt/local/C, /mnt/local/D, etc? There is no need for the
desktop icons if the much better kdf is used (see below).

If a mount directory specified in /etc/fstab does not exist, the whole bootup
process falls over.

Supermount is fixed to only accept a vfat floppy. Set fs=auto and modprobe
complains 'no such module'. Ext2 floppies must be mountable.

Kdf is not installed. Pixel reports that it 'will not compile'.Yet the
kdf rpm from from 6.1 installs and works perfectly as long as it was an
initial install. It won't install on an upgrade installation. Kdf is
a critically vital part of KDE.

The nfs-utils RPM is not installed.Without this there can be no
networking.

The nfs daemon is not started in SysVInit. Therefore no networking.
This was true of 6.1 as well.

/etc/exports is not set up. Without this done on all machines on a network,
no machine can mount directories on other machines on the same network.

Enough for now?

Mmmthis makes less sence every time I read a msg in this
thread...2.2.15-0.7mdk?? there's no such thing in ftp.tux.org nor in
my CD (burned ISO)there's a bunch of different 2.2.14-15mdk's,
plus the linus-2.2.14-1mdk one I'm running...so...now I'm completely
mixed up...where did that 2.2.15 come from?

[Cooker] kernel rpm updates for idiots

2000-02-02 Thread WH Bouterse

A question brought on by recently installing
L-M on a new users system, a recent convert
from the "Empire". How to make a basic, no
recompile "clickable" kernel from the "update" icon
on desktop; whereas no compiling, pointing to /boot,
sustem-map,new,old, lilo-hand editing etc.
would be necessary?

Are there provisions being made for this or
is it entirely impossible? It took me a year or
two to get this somewhat straightened out myself
but to a totally new user, to tell them,,,
"yes, you can click on the update rpms icon but
don't say install to the kernel rpms beacause its
too complicated for you right now", begins to
confuse the "upgradability" issue somewhat.!

Am I out in "Left field" here.!? I am not advocating
"dumbing down" Linux-Mandrake but merely making
the basic configuration issues a little "simpler"
for new users.

Thanks,

William Bouterse

Mmmh... looks OK here:

$ cat /usr/src/linux/include/linux/version-up.h
#define UTS_RELEASE "2.2.15-0.7mdk"
#define LINUX_VERSION_CODE 131599
#define KERNEL_VERSION(a,b,c) (((a) << 16) + ((b) << 8) + (c))

$ uname -r
2.2.15-0.7mdk

I am using the standard kernel, not the "linus" one.

I just installed Air on some Compaq Armada Notebooks and I have freezes when
trying to detect PCMCIA devices (either in the beginning of the install and
at late network config).

I triggered that on an Armada 1750 (PII 300, 128MB RAM, 4GB Disks) and on an
Armada 1574D (P233MMX).

The PCMCIA chip is a TI 1225 on the 1750, I think it the same on the 1574D.

Please have a look at dmesg.log attached.

here is what you should do man
from windows 98 install partition magic and when the setup is done you are
asked to remove the cd or diskette and press enter once you did it. Then
the windows starts and you automatically can choose the size of your
partition and make sure your partition for windows 98 is fat32

Seems like the problem is the kernel headersthe
/usr/src/linux/include/linux/version-up.h file says

#define UTS_RELEASE "2.2.14-1mdk"

while uname -r reports:

[vox@vox vox]$ uname -r
2.2.14-1mdklinus

and vmware module building doesn't like that at allis this only
my case or what? btw, this is happening in two different boxes with
Mdk7 in em.

lolcurioisity...and also to try and attempt to freeze my o/s?? lol

oh...duhdon't have to mount the stupid thing to play audio...

well, i (as you stated) really dont' have a need to mount the thing unless you
want to copy it. which i don't

guess there should really be some type of prompt stating "cannot mount audio
cd-rom" or something. think when i do put an "audio/music cdrom" into my
actual scsi cdrom (and not ide-scs cd-rw), it appears to actually play it.
the scsi cd-rom continues to with the green light while the rest of teh kde
desktop freezes. (can't break out of it or anything).

enjoying my audio/music cdrom now (via cd-rw) :)

Why should you mount the audio cdrom??

If you realy want to do that go to www.freshmeat.net and search for cdfs.

Btw I had to use gcc 2.7.2.3 to compile cdfs..

[Cooker] Mandrake updates

2000-02-02 Thread Nora Etukudo

Hello.

Since some time ago I'm mirroring some Mandrake stuff with 'rsync' from
'sunsite.uio.no'. Last night all updated images for 7.0

   sunsite.uio.no/pub/unix/linux/Mandrake/updates/7.0/images

got deleted (yes, I do a "real" mirror).

Well, today I was looking manually on sunsite via ftp and found a new
directory structure

an empty tree (except 'ls-LR')vvv
   sunsite.uio.no/pub/unix/linux/Mandrake/updates/7.0/RPMS/
  SRPMS/
  images/
  ls-lR
and an additional new tree

   sunsite.uio.no/pub/unix/linux/Mandrake/updates/7.00/RPMS/
   SRPMS/
   images/
   ls-lR

The latter contains the lost images.
Is there something magic?

Liebe Grüße, Nora.

Re: [Cooker] kudzu core dumps

2000-02-02 Thread Quel Qun

Hi,
So the reason of the crash is that I have some data arriving on my comm port
and kudzu doesn't like it.
If I stop the incoming data, kudzu works fine.
A segfault is no good though... you may want to put a -s option in the kudzu
init.d script.

[Cooker] cd-rw using scsi emu needs a desktop icon -dummy me forgot!

2000-02-02 Thread Roger

my first scsi cd-rom drive is listed as cd-rom_2 (on the desktop icon)
my second is a cd-rw (ide-scsi) and the link on the desktop is broken but
probabely be referred to as "Cd-Rom". the ordering is also reversed but i
guess i could attribute that to the weird scsi cdrom and ide cd-rw h/w lay that
i have.

it does work tho on install per my previous post on this layout.

just that teh cd-rw devise does need a dekstop cdrom link to the appropriate
mnt point. playing around with this now

Perhaps you misunderstood: Without high-speed access or a CD burner,
downloading new iso images is not practical, and there are only a
dozen or so packages which have changed. What I'd hoped is to have a
directory of just the updated RPMs so I'd only need to launch
MandrakeUpdate (with a hacked last line to set the version number)

I realize we can't use the normal 7.0 (or 7.00?) updates directory
because these will hold updates to the formal release, but without the
updates added between the first iso and the final edition, I'm also
afraid my system will never notice buggy packages (unless there are
further updates after the formal release)

In lieu of an updates directory, is there a place were you have
summarized all of the packages that have been updated in v2? I don't
mind fetching them the old-fashioned way ;)

[Cooker] tickled pink

2000-02-02 Thread Tom

I just installed Mdk 7.0, the 'cheapbytes' version of air. It
has most all files dated Jan. 10, 11, and 12th. Actually I did several
installs, just playing around with it. All went smoothly, no problems.
I was very impressed with the GUI install (not upgrade), particularly
the re-partitioning. The main reason I gave up a perfectly fine 6.0
install was to re-partition. Figured I might as well upgrade too.

I was also pleasantly surprised to find that several of my favorite
apps that I thought I'd need to re-install, were already installed! The
only hardware that wasn't completely setup and functioning was my AWE64
sound card, but that was no problem. A quick 'sndconfig' took care of it
in seconds. As I said, I did several installs, trying 'recommended' to full
'development', about 4 altogether.

In 2 installs (tries) tho, Windows would not recognize a 2 gig fat32
partition I was trying to leave on the end of the 8 gig HDD. NBD, I
was sort'a on the fence about having that partition, or just giving the
whole drive to Linux, which is what I ended up doing. In the first 3
installs (about 40 mins. ea.) I also kept ending up with a 7mb blank
space on the end of the drive. I read awhile back that setting the
HDD from 'lba' to 'normal' in bios would eliminate this. So on the final
install, that's what I did. No more blank space, DiskDrake allocated the
entire drive (WD Caviar). On booting tho, I got the infamous 'LI'.
When I set the drive back to 'lba', that problem was fixed and 7.0
booted without error.

So thanks Mandrake, not everybody's havin problems with 7.0 ;-)

[Hardware is a p3-450 oc'd to 608, on a soyo 6ba+III. 13.6 7200rpm IBM
hda (W98) master, and the WD 8.4 5400rpm hdb (Mdk 7) as slave on ide0.
SB AWE64 sound, Phoebe (TI chipset) 33,6 modem, pci Voodoo3]

To comment on the recent 'oc'ing' discussion. Most oc'rs run some
of the 'stablest' hardware. My 450 will run W98 at 621, and some
oc'rs would call it stable. I run it at 608 because at that speed it
will run the '16 hour' prime95 (Linux) self test with no errors.
'Cpuburn' wont' get the internal diode to go over 43C, no matter how
long it runs. I suspect a lot of the problems some blame on their
OS, compiler, Mandrake, etc., are really hardware problems, and
often from brand new ready made systems like Dell, Gateway, .

[Cooker] Bug report : PCMCIA detection on Compaq Armada notebooks

2000-02-02 Thread "Fenal, Jérôme"

I just installed Air on some Compaq Armada Notebooks and I have freezes when
trying to detect PCMCIA devices (either in the beginning of the install and
at late network config).

I triggered that on an Armada 1750 (PII 300, 128MB RAM, 4GB Disks) and on an
Armada 1574D (P233MMX).

The PCMCIA chip is a TI 1225 on the 1750, I think it the same on the 1574D.

Please have a look at dmesg.log attached.

Jérôme

here it is:

- fixed: bug in fat resizing
- fixed: bad error catching in auto fat resizing
- fixed: auto fat resizing only for `Recommended'
- fixed: Mylex DAC 960 non detectiong
- fixed: buggy entries in pcitable that made DrakX try to install server `'
(empty string). Mostly for Matrox G100
- added: auto detection of one more GeForce
- fixed: `DECchip 21041 [Tulip Pass 3]' driver is now de4x5
- fixed: `DECchip 21050' is not a NIC!
- fixed: for east european languages, the 75dpi fonts were not installed
- workaround: for east european languages (and maybe others), the TIS fontset
from the mdk fonts was taken by Qt (it should have taken the iso8859-[29]).
chkfontpath remove and re-add the mdk font directory fix this. The problem is
fixed correctly with last qt from cooker
- fixed: conv=auto changed to conv=binary (was causing kfm freeze and could
garbage binaries)

known install bugs not corrected (that i remember):
- install not booting (stage2 not found and alike errors)
:( -> can't be reproduced
- install X server not working (GTK saying can't connect to X server)
:( -> can't be reproduced
- promise not detected
(patch available at www.linux-mandrake.com/en/airlast.php3, but it seems it doesn't
work)
- PS/2 mistakenly detected
(patch available at www.linux-mandrake.com/en/airlast.php3, but it seems it doesn't
work?)
- no PCI box (patch available at www.linux-mandrake.com/en/airlast.php3)
- chineese Big5 is not displayed correctly
(workaround: boot install with ``linux mem=39M)
- bulgarian not displayed correctly
- bad symlink /dev/cdromX to hdX in case of ide burner
(fix: change the link to scd0 (or maybe scd1...))

Will there be a changelog or anything of the sort released describing

Actually that particular script did make it in and actually was in the
5mdk release. However, I think it should go in the %preun, and
definately should not remove /lib/modules/*/modules.dep, but rather
/lib/modules//modules.dep. The file needs
to be removed so that when rpm tries to remove the /lib/modules/ directory it does not get an error.

That aside however, what I was referring to not making it into the
kernel was modified "%post [smp|fb|secure...]" scripts which sets up the
links for the kernel being installed to be the current kernel while also
backing up the old kernel into "linux.old". As well the additional
package "freeswan" that I hacked into the kernel. I uploaded my spec
file and my freeswan-1.2 patch file to the crypto ftp site a couple of
days ago.

2000-02-02 Thread Esko Woudenberg

I have to agree with this statement. (Partially because I had windoze get
trashed on trying to resize a partition) The main problem I see is that I was
downloading daily updates to cooker and "all of a sudden" cooker was "gone" and
mandrake 7.0 was released... I have been a big Mandrake fan since 5.2 and
still prefer the distro but would rather wait for a quality release than
rushing something out the door.

You could find the Mandrake 7 V2 ISO on the mandrake FTP server today.
It may be saturated because of all the mirors that sould download today, but you
should check.
It may release the boot disks, the root login on ftp server and the high level of
security during installation.

Everyone hope it will be the good one...

Speaking of hard drives, I own my own computer store so I see allot of
things and I was having trouble with one set up I had over three
different motherboards and it all turned out to be my hard drive. It was
an ibm scsi less than a year old. Also to note none of the regular
problems were occurring. It would get xserver errors that would lock up
the system and on reboot all the drives would have to checked for
damage, which was always fixed without a word about bad blocks or
anything remotely hard drive related.

No, that won't work at all.

1. /dev/hdd is a block device, not a directory.
2. if you cat /dev/hda, you cat the whole drive, from sector 0 to last sector.

Now what if you were a little more clear on what you want to do

Re: [Cooker] 7.0 release delayed!

2000-02-02 Thread Roger

I feel like i'm repeating myself, but there are compatability problems between
using the mdk partitioning prg and partition magic 5.0.

dunno which does what, but it doesn't look good as this user even verified.
most people (or the probabely the majority) do dual boot by havign win98 and
linux on the same hdd. although it is getting somewhat tight, with a ~25 gb
7200rpm hdd - it fits well on these.

again, yes the the compatability issue is somewhat a "bug". doesn't wipe out
the hdd, you just need to do some reconfiguring of the data, etc.

do have pq magic 5.0 and haven't seen much difference in error fixing (as it's
said to have). eh, i even tried just tossing the $ into pq 5.0 hoping it would
fix the problems, but didn't

think you need to use the pq utility found within the /utility/dos directy and
verify all the numbers look in a "familar" format. powerquest tech support can
help on this. think a colomn on mine said all "127's" 'cept one which read
"126". changed that to a "127" and everything became visible again.

dunno.

What security level did you use? If you chose a medium security level then
you need to allow your users (people other root) access to those devices.

I can slowly see you are very very new to linux and may not know anything
about hows groups have privileges for hardware and software.

When double clicking on a .wav file, kmpg automatically opens to play but
displays error when clicking play, "kmpg couldn't open the audiodevice! all
decoders stopped". usually i use the other media player after left
clicking on
a *.wav file.

think the jan 01,00 iso (7.0) , it used media player when double clicking
on a
.wav file (all previous editions had the above error).

now this error is back! yuck.

to resolve: reassign the default .wav player (would imagine).

Why is it easier for Windows? They don't follow all the rules which were
defined on networking. I mean I learned how to network with TCPIP not
Microsoft TCPIP. They are apples and oranges. Why else would Windows
market their server separate than their user software?

When you buy Microsoft you are deciding you don't want to know everything
about networking. When you use Linux you have many options to configure
the network to your needs. Typical windows users don't know what to do. I
am sorry to say there is no WINIPCFG.EXE in Linux. (LOL)

I would say when in doubt look on the internet for documentation on how
to's many college students in the early 90s wrote document for configuring
things for UNIX/LINUX or go buy an O'Reilly book on network. Linux is just
using the standards. Linux is not secreting on its networking.

backing up is something you just have to do, as if it were a reflex. you

actually, sometimes i pray that my win98 crashes so that i would have to do
a

Re: [Cooker] 7.0 release delayed!

I think your comment is not a fair assessment of Mandrake 7.0. Your
assessment is only a fractional portion of what the software offers. Have
you checked to make sure the Harddrive does not have any problems prior to
installing Mandrake 7.0. I have read this note and your previous note to
understand your problem. Was there maintenance done on this hard drive?
Could even repartition this hard drive with Partition magic. I would bet
PM would have problems too. To go one step further I have a spare hard
drive (6 gigs) which I installed Windows 98 Revision 2 on first then
installed Mandrake 7.0; I did not run into a problem. Maybe I am
prejudice in discounting what could be a problem in your eyes, but I was
able to run the whole install and launch Linux.

I also read the announcement you are referencing. It mentions the
repartitioning for the installation process. It is a marketing tool for
all types of computers-- not just a computer which has Microsoft Windows
already installed on it. You are trying to site this for your example with
is just one type of use. I belong to a User Group which has not reported
problems. I personally have used the resizing on a Linux Install for my
hard drive (to have Linux as the only operating system) it never errored.

What you call an acknowledgement has only for those people who tried
windows and linux on the same box. Microsoft does many things with their
products which could result in problems for the hard drive. How can
Mandrake be expected to fix all problems with a hard drive if Microsoft did
something bizarre.

I disagree on your assessment of Mandrake's quality.

You make it sound as though I was dealing with beta software. I was
commenting on the inadequacy of a released product (
http://www.linux-mandrake.com/en/announce-air.php3 ) to deal correctly with
my data (I got it 3 days after it was released), when there was no mention
anywhere of any problems re partitioning. In fact, Mandrake use this as a
big marketing tool with no mention of any problems anywhere on the site
There is still no reference to 7.0 in the updates area of the site.

Problems with partitioning on install have now been acknowledged as have
other install problems. There are just too many problems with 7.0 for it to
be considered release quality.

Subject: Re: [Cooker] 7.0 release delayed!

first off...as i said, resizing windows or "adding partitions" was a
no-no".
did that and when booting back to dos and using pqmagic stated, "partition
errorpartition wasn't visible or no partitions to show". to resolve,
had
to go back a delete the swap partition that i added.

tell ya one thing, your confidence is won pretty quick! me, i said, "ahh,
what
the heck, i'll let it make "just" my swap partition." glad i was safe with
my
data. just had to go back and delete the swap. also, you could have given
powerquest a call for techsupport, could have just been a "value" that
needed
to be edited with their utility apps w/i /utitilites/dos somewhere. (had
to do
this also)

last item, "data not backed-up" is "lost data"! This is a primary rule
when
dealing with any computer. what would you do if a lightning bolt struck
your
hdd? Me? I would simpley say "oh well" and pop in my cd-rom and
re-install
(windows98? probabely needed to be reinstalled anyways..usually is the case
with mine anyways).
